What travelers are saying

"This trip is unbelievably fantastic. Two of the best rides of my life, were on this tour. The guides were very good and this was just the start, when we met them, at the hotel in Cortina. Cortina was the site of the 1956 Olympics, and is a small pretty village. Nothing was open the two nights we were there, so probably bad timing. Hotel was a typical ski village hotel, good Italian/German food, and very comfortable. Second day of biking was up an old railroad spur that is now a ski trail about 15-20 K up to a mountain pass called Cimabanche Pass, which is beautiful. We rode up in a snow storm, then rain, then finally clear skies. This was the number two best ride of my life. Starting out from the hotel in Cortina, up the old spur, through single track bike trails, past babbling brooks, up to this fabulous mountain pass. This is now where the fun starts. Mostly downhill on paved roads very little traffic, at good speeds, through the most spectacular valleys you would ever see on a bike ride. Breathtaking. It had to end back at the hotel for a big dinner. The best ride of my life was the last biking day out of Merano. We were bused up 1500 K, about 85-90 miles to Lake Resia, high up in the Dolomites, then rode around the lake, down, back to Merano. High mountain peaks, many valleys, small towns, many grape growing farms, scenery, the best, and cool brisk weather. This was truly a great bike tour, one I will never forget. The trip is rated easy, but maybe easy/moderate is closer. The Hotel in Merano is excellent, middle of old town, modern, has a thermal bath, rooms were very good. The town of Merano is a must see if in the area, small, beneath the high mountains of the Dolomites, good restaurants, lots of tourists."

What travelers are saying

"The variation in the scenery from La Brigue to Menton was spectacular, especially as we took it day by day and could see the gradual difference as we descended through the Maritime Alps. Our favorite towns were St. Agnes and Menton. We did our one-week tour in June, with super weather both in the Alps and down on the coast. This was the perfect way to get away for one week, but feel like we had been on a two-week holiday - fresh air, exercise, good food and nothing to arrange or worry about. Thank you"

What travelers are saying

"Although short in comparison to other trips to India which I’ve done with Explore, it was an extremely full and informative trip. It was unfortunate that we needed to change Tour Leaders after 2 days as we had begun to bond with Regneesh but Abhi, his replacement, was an excellent guide. He was knowledgeable, thoughtful and ensured our needs were met. I felt he went beyond what I would have expected of a guide in catering for my lack of ability to walk far in the extreme heat. Our driver was equally thoughtful and we felt we were in safe hands. The content of the trip was exactly as it said on the tin. I didn’t feel that the trip lacked content but I would have been more than happy to spend an extra night in Thekaddy and perhaps visit the Periyar Reserve, and an extra night on the houseboat (which was of an excellent standard) would have been great. The accommodation and food was of a good standard throughout, including the home stay. All in all, a first class trip."

What travelers are saying

"We joined the Intrepid “Real Italy Food Tour” and enjoyed it thoroughly. Our tour guide, Micol, was very knowledgeable and provided us with lots of good information. It seems Micol knew many of the staff of the venues we visited, including the pasta making class we attended. Our group of 11 travelers was extremely compatible, which greatly added to the fun and enjoyment."

Biking & Cycling Tour Selection Trips

  • Select the destination where you want to go on a biking tour (Europe, North America, Asia?), then narrow down your search by type of cycling trip. Do you want a more independent tour, where there is time to explore on your own and then regroup at day’s end? Are you looking for luxury accommodations and haute cuisine to complement your travel days on the bike? Classic, popular trips or new, off-the-beaten-path cycling destinations?
  • Be aware that many trips have several levels of difficulty; the easiest rating may mean limited miles in the saddle or riding in a vehicle to avoid difficult sections.
  • Consider the balance you’d prefer on your cycling tour - ask how many miles and hours are spent on the bike and how much sightseeing there is. This will help determine whether you’re more comfortable on a bike tour for avid cyclists or those who prefer a more leisurely balance of relaxing, biking and sightseeing.
  • Consider group size when selecting your cycling tour. The typical size of a biking vacation group is 12 people, though some groups have as many as 20.
  • Would you prefer your group biking vacation to be guided or self-guided? Prefer to go at your own pace and are more independent? Go self-guided. Prone to taking wrong turns and feel more comfortable as part of a group in a foreign country? Go with a guided cycling tour.
  • Going solo? Most small group cycling companies welcome individual travelers - in fact, a fair percentage of most cycling tours are solo travelers, so you’ll likely make some great new like-minded friends.
  • Take note of how long a company has been in business, but don't automatically eliminate newer companies. Check on their bicycle touring experience.
  • Ask about support during your tour from the cycling company. How many guides are on the road and how many are in a support vehicle? Do they provide water refills and maintenance like tire changes? What about support when you’re off the bike, such as massage, yoga sessions and recommendations for local restaurants and sightseeing?
  • Find out what’s included on your group cycling tour. Things to consider are accommodations, meals and snacks, number of guides, bike and biking gear, transfers, entrance fees for sightseeing, maps, etc.
  • Whether the operator rents or provides bicycles, you should be sure they can accommodate your height.
  • If you have a preference for a recumbent, tandem or electric-assist, be sure to ask. Same holds true for clipless pedals.
  • You will enjoy yourself more if you train before your bicycle tour or are in good physical shape. Some hours in a saddle prior to your trip will prevent saddle sores and/or sore bottoms.
  • Once You’re on Your Way…

Enjoy your surroundings. Don't just stick your nose to the ground and pound out the miles. The pavement looks pretty much the same wherever you are.
  • Be flexible. Routes change, roads close and weather doesn't always cooperate.
  • Be prepared for any weather. Wear cycling clothes and fabrics that breathe. There is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothes. Layering works well.

Additional details

How Much Training Should I Do?

One of the best things about a guided cycling trip is that you don’t need to be an avid cyclist, nor an athlete, to enjoy one. Top bike tour operators take into account that you have chosen this mode of travel for the chance to slow down and immerse yourself in your destination.

It’s not a race! Often your tour company will have an online quiz to assess your current level of fitness or cycling ability, which helps narrow down which destinations and tours would be best for you. Plus, the best cycling tour companies offer several rider levels, ranging from leisurely to advanced or enthusiast.

Once you have decided where to go, ask your bike tour operator about training plans to prep for your vacation, if only to give you a little peace of mind and to prepare your body for time in the saddle.

If you’re an avid cyclist, a bike tour is a great opportunity to slow down and see more - don’t be surprised to find that you’re spending more hours on the bike to fit it all in, but that you’re averaging slower paces than those training rides back home. Enjoy the ride!

How Do Cycling Tours Work?

Guided bike vacations allow you to slow down and really immerse yourself in your destination, at ground level, all without having to worry about the logistics and planning. Bike tour companies will take care of the details, from accommodations and bike gear, to dining and sightseeing excursions.

Importantly, guided cycle tour also provide support along the ride, so if your bike breaks down or you’re just not feeling it that day, a guide in a support van can fix your bike or pick you up and give you a ride. One guide will be riding with the group along the way, ensuring that no one takes a wrong turn.

Your typical bike tour will usually have about 8 to 20 people per group, some of whom are traveling together and some of whom have chosen to vacation solo with like-minded active travelers. The cycling guide will lead your rides and provide information about local sightseeing highlights, cultural stops, scenic overlooks, dining recommendations and more.

Do I Need My Own Bike?

You do not need to bring your own bike on most guided cycling tours. (If you’re very in love with your own bike, some operators will allow you to bring it.)

In fact, one of the cool things about biking with a tour company is the chance to use state-of-the-art bike that are well maintained by the company’s bike mechanics. Used to a tandem bike? Experienced tandem riders should ask their tour operator if this type of bike is available and if there is an additional fee. As for helmets, bring your own on your cycle tour.

If you’re an older traveler or are recovering from an injury or surgery, consider using an electric bike (e-bike) for your group cycle tour. These wonders of cycle technology make cycling vacations more accessible for everyone, no matter their fitness level. Ask about availability before booking your bike tour.

What Should I Bring?

Try to pack lightly for your cycling tour, in one carry-on preferably. Consider fast-drying clothing and synthetic fabrics and blends. Pack small items inside your helmet, shoes and water bottles to maximize packing space.

Guided Biking Tour Essential Packing Items (ask your tour company for a full list before departure):

  • Helmet
  • Water bottle
  • Lightweight daypack
  • Riding shorts (padded shorts are recommended for a more comfortable bike ride)
  • Riding jerseys
  • Fast-drying socks
  • Comfortable biking and walking shoes
  • Biking gloves
  • Street clothes for sightseeing
  • Rain jacket
  • Extra layers, depending on your bike tour destination
  • Toiletries
  • Passport, health insurance card and ID
  • Camera and spare battery
  • Plastic bags for dirty, wet laundry
  • Electronics chargers (and appropriate adapters for Europe bike tours)
  • Small first-aid kit

Choosing Your Destination

Where do you want to cycle? Has following the Tour de France been a dream or yours? Or does Vermont immediately bring bicycling to mind? Perhaps you would like to enjoy a bike and barge tour or cycling combined with another sport. Maybe a long distance journey suits you best.

You may be surprised by the number of appealing destinations. Popular destinations include France and Italy, but almost every country in Europe offers cycling. The Netherlands offers relatively flat areas, while Ireland takes you through those thousand shades of green.

Riding along canals or waterways, such as the Danube River, is another pleasant possibility. Of course both the U.S. and Canada offer varied terrain for exploration, but don't forget more far-flung cycling destinations like New Zealand, South Africa, Scandinavia and parts of Asia.

Once you’ve weighed all your options and settled on the  right bicycle tour for yourself, you’ll have the advantage of knowing just what to expect – and chances are your adventure will be exactly what you had hoped for and dreamed about.
