The Top 6 Must Have Travel Apps

June 15, 2015

There’s no way around it. Mobile devices are a way of life, but they don’t have to be a nuisance! Especially when it comes to travel, apps are incredibly useful. In fact many apps now exist to help make your travel experience more about putting the phone AWAY in order to truly get the most out of your vacation.

The world of apps can be a bit overwhelming, but these are easy to use and simple to sign up for. Guanteed to help make your trip a seamless one! So without further ado, here are our top six must have travel apps:

1) Tripcast is a great way to keep others up with your vacation. It’s a sort of online journal when you can record memories and photos and share them with friends and family.

2) By far one of the best apps for travel is Google Translate. While many translation apps are out there, this is among the easiest and most effective. It provides a couple different options including “hover translate,” which is my favorite. Simply aim your phone’s camera at the word or phrase you want to translate and see your language of choice show up! I pretend I’m saying magic words while it happens.

3) If you have a free day during your travels, the new Lonely Planet Make My Day app is a fantastic planning tool. It let’s you craft a full day of sightseeing based on a variety of activities and interests. It can be a bit cumbersome and gets a little overly specific, but in an unfamiliar city it's helpful for discovering new places as well as landmarks.

4) Viber and WhatsApp are great for minimizing your data usage, and bypassing the headache of counting your minutes on an international plan from your provider.

5) Ever felt like there should be an app that lets you keep all your vacation information in one place, from flights to dinner reservations? Well have no fear. Tripit is here my friend! A lifesaver for the plan ahead type of traveler. Easy to use, and free, though even more capability is unlocked with a premium plan.

6) For the more fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants traveler, Hotel Tonight is a fantastic app for last minute accommodation. And not just in economy hotels. Really nice hotels at heavily discounted rates are pretty easy to find using this app. Yes please!

BONUS TIP

It’s always a good idea to download the app for whatever airline you’re using. Most airlines have very functional and helpful apps for booking but also for keeping track of your flight status.
