What travelers are saying

"Our family of four, including two adult children, took the Bicycling: Day Trips to Paradise in Canada. This trip is entirely outsourced to the owners of the inn, there are no Road Scholar employees involved in the trip. Two of us have taken bicycle trips all over the world and the bicycling component of this trip was disorganized, haphazard and almost unsafe. We all filled out forms giving details regarding our bicycle fitting months before the trip. On the first day, the leader Stephen, went around the room and asked the same questions and said everyone would get fitted in the morning before we began the first ride. The morning brought a rack of bikes, all different types in various levels of readiness. There were road bikes, hybrid bikes, mountain bikes and e-bikes. The rides were all on paved surfaces and the mountain bikes were heavy and the additional suspension added weight. The bike I received had rust on the chain and rear sprocket. When I asked about it, was told they were waiting for another van to show up with tools and equipment. Once it arrived, they gave me the lubricant to spray on the rust. My wife’s bike would not shift into the high gear on the front sprocket. Instead of adjusting the derailleur, they suggested spraying it with lubricant. Our one son is over six feet and needed a larger frame bike, even though he detailed it in the bike form months ago, there was no bike to fit him. One of the guides, then went home and brought a larger bike that was a full suspension mountain bike for him. The bike was very heavy, hard to control on the road and he felt unsafe. After two days, one of the guides convinced Stephen that they could adjust a hybrid bike to fit him. Clearly there was no work done to prepare the bikes for the trip. Many of the bikes needed adjusting and all needed lubricant to function easily. For every day, there was a tray of snacks placed out for us to take along the ride. None of the bikes had any baskets or attached bags, so if you didn’t bring a small day pack, there was no way to carry the snacks. For lunch on the rides, they brought exactly one sandwich for each rider. Since most of us get hungry while doing a day of exercise, it would have been helpful to have a few extras. On one day, they ran out of sandwiches and one of the leaders that were riding with us did not get lunch. Do NOT take this trip if you are expecting it to be a bicycling trip. We have used VBT and Discovery Bicycle Tours many times over the past 25 years and they are excellent bike tour companies. Lastly, after sharing these details with Road Scholar after the trip, their response was weak at best. After doing the full reviews and having to call them, their response was to give us $200 credit after spending $8000 on this trip. Not only was that insulting, they assumed that I would take another trip with their organization."

What travelers are saying

"Most of the people on this 17-day river cruise was quite elderly and infirm. Therefore the complimentary excursions were painfully slow walking. Local guides mostly told stories of their own upbringing and the conflicts they lived through. There was not much history on any of the excursions; and none of the buildings we saw gave us an opportunity to go inside, even the paid excursions. The accommodations were excellent, except that we paid for the best veranda but could not sit on our veranda because for the first 5 days our ship was packed tight next to another Viking ship. Food was good, except for dinners which were quite mediocre and never captured the flavor of the local foods."

What travelers are saying

"Until Covid clears, I would steer clear of Backroads. We were partially through their June 2020 Costa Rica tour when a guest tested Covid positive. She and her husband were isolated. The rest of the group were offered wimpy masks. Nobody was offered Covid testing daily and masks were not required of the guests or staff. The guides kept repeating "not in the CDC guidelines." Our group of six decided that the Backroads response was inadequate so returned home mid-excursion. The hotel and food was excellent, but the provided bikes were inadequate. The front derailleurs were poorly adjusted, and most of the riders had the chains come off during the first ride. Hikes or bike rides were conducted in downpours. Disappointed for charging such a premium price."

What travelers are saying

"I am a 12 time traveler with Grand Circle and OAT. But maybe no more. They are impossible to reach by phone without waiting for hours. I even tired their emergency phone number and was on hold for hours. What if I had been stranded in a foreign country? They cancelled my Eastern Europe to Black Sea Cruise in Sept 2021 and cited "covid" or "civil unrest" issues. Baloney. They cancelled because they did not sell out the cruise and lied about it to me. I know because I went with Viking during the same month with no excuses like Grand Circle gave me. Add to that they promised me a $1,000 credit on my next trip- which was to Antarctica in December. The invoice they sent me showed the credit- and 1 month later a new invoice arrived with the credit removed. Why? Another lie? Something is really wrong here with the company now and I would suggest be very careful with bookings as they are not the same company I traveled with for the past 12 years."

What travelers are saying

"A really difficult company to communicate with, slow to respond and not able to accept accountability for poor service. Used Tee Travel in Spain which was even worse. Not able to organize support or assistance and harassed me about luggage that wasn't mine. There were other walkers who appeared to have more support and assistance from their travel providers. Definitely avoid this company as overpriced and no actual service."

Elbe River Tour Selection Trips

  • Be prepared for all contingencies along an Elbe River river cruise. Due to fluctuating water levels of the river, there is a chance for delays or changes in the course of your river journey

For biking tours, make sure to consult tour guides and companies in advance so you are prepared with adequate gear.

If you are interested in rock climbing in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains, it is advised to consult and tour with a trained guide.

Make sure to bring layers of clothing, since the weather tends to change along the course of the Elbe River, depending on what region you are touring.

Common Elbe River Cruise Routes

Cruises along the Elbe River most commonly start in Berlin, Germany and twist their way along the river’s course to Prague, Czech Republic. Although the Elbe River does not connect directly to either city, they are nearby, prominent landmarks and essential stops for travelers and tourists. Tours along the Elbe River consist mostly of river cruises, group tours, and cycling journeys.

Starting from Berlin and heading south to Prague, the most common Elbe River cruise route is as follows:

Berlin, Germany: Kick off your Elbe River journey in Germany’s capital city of Berlin. Rich with history, culture, and prominent monuments, this vibrant metropolis is a perfect start to your Elbe River vacation.

Potsdam, Germany: Home to many exquisite castles, palaces, and parks, Potsdam is a bordering city of Berlin. Frequented by tourists and locals, alike, you will get a great taste of German culture, history, and architecture when visiting this city.

Magdeburg, Germany: Embark on your Elbe River cruise starting in Magdeburg. Here you will marvel at the Gothic-style architecture, including that of the magnificent Magdeburg Cathedral.

Wittenberg, Germany: Another eastern Germany city along the Elbe River is Wittenberg. Here you will find an exciting mix of modern and historic culture. Although a university town in its modern years, Wittenberg is closely linked to Martin Luther and the Lutheran religion as the city of the Protestant Reformation.

Meissen, Germany: Continue your Elbe River cruise to the city of Meissen. Meissen is a quaint eastern German city famous for its porcelain production, coined as “Meissen porcelain.”

Dresden, Germany: Dresden is the capital city of the German State of Saxony. Rebuilt after World War II, this river city’s decorativebaroque architectural style was restored to the beautiful design we see today.

Saxon Switzerland National ParkMake sure to check out this breathtaking national park in the German Free State of Saxony. Located close to Dresden, you can explore the rocky canyon landscape on your Elbe River tour!

Elbe Sandstone Mountains: Straddling the German/Czech Republic border, this remarkable mountain range is a must-see on your Elbe River journey. With varying levels of hikes and walking routes, there will be a scenic activity for every traveler in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains!

What is the weather like in the Elbe River region?

The Elbe River flows from the North Sea down the northeastern region of Germany into the Czech Republic. The weather along the Elbe’s course is variant based on region and time of year. However, weather is considered to be moderate, overall. In the northern and coastal regions, you can find an oceanic climate, characterized by warm summers and mild, cloudy winters. On your Elbe River cruise, Hamburg, Germany is a major northern port city that experiences this oceanic climate.

Moving south, more inland, the weather is continental, with greater contrast between seasons; warmer summers, and colder winters. Cities along the Elbe located in this central region are Magdeburg, Wittenberg, Meissen, and Dresden. When approaching the southern end of the Elbe River, the weather becomes moderately continental, where winters have colder, freezing temperatures, and summers are enjoyably warm. The vivacious capital city of the Czech Republic, Prague, falls into this moderately continental weather region.

Where is the Elbe River?

The Elbe River is primarily located in the northeastern region of Germany. With the North Sea as its outlet, the Elbe River flows from the Krkonoše Mountains of the Czech Republic north through Germany. Hamburg is the most famous northern port city along the Elbe River and sits 110 km (68 miles) southeast of Cuxhaven, the point at which the Elbe River flows into the North Sea. It is one of the most prominent rivers in central Europe and runs 1,094 km (680 miles) in total.

Who will enjoy an Elbe River cruise?

Elbe River tours offer a wide range of opportunities for several different styles of travel. Whether you are interested in active hiking or cycling tours, or more apt to relaxing, leisurely cruises, there is an adventure awaiting you on the Elbe River! Physical Level Requirements

The physical level of a large majority of Elbe River tours is “easy.” The physical level recommended for each tour depends on the tour style. Active tours, such as “A Cycling Journey: The Elbe River From Germany to Czech Republic,” will be more physically intensive than a river cruise tour.

While traveling along the Elbe River, you can find different activities for every physical fitness level. The remarkable region of Saxon Switzerland National Park offers many outdoor activities, ranging from comfortable strolls throughout the sandstone formations, to more rigorous rockclimbing adventures. Regardless of your level or desire for physical activity on your travels, you will find an Elbe River cruise that best suits you on Stride!

When is the best time to take an Elbe River cruise?

The most popular times for an Elbe River cruise are between the months of May to September. These months are warmer and lead to enjoyable cruises and outdoor activities in route. For this reason, some Elbe River cruises only run from mid-March to mid-November. If you can brave the cold, however, you will find that the off-season winter months are much less crowded, and prices tend to also be cheaper.

One thing to be prepared for with a river cruise is that there are times when water levels are either too low or too high. This is beyond the operators’ control and can be hard to predict. These water fluctuations are more common in the months of June and July.
