What travelers are saying

"The trip itinerary was well thought through with the right balance of challenging walks, rest time, cultural activities and time to socialise. Joao, our guide, was exceptional. He really took on board any feedback and made sure we had the best time. The scenery in Madeira surpassed my expectations. I would recommend this trip to anyone wanting an active weeks’ holiday."

What travelers are saying

"It was a leap of faith for us to use Zicasso, a service that connected us to Top Travel Italy, and to book a trip with a travel agent because we've always planned our own vacations in the past. It turned out great! Their model works. Zicasso recommended two agencies in Italy, our destination country, and we chose Top Travel Italy based on their responsiveness. What fun to create a customized itinerary based on their recommendations -- we told them how many days we could travel, what our budget was, and roughly what we wanted to do. They came back with a first draft and we tweaked it from there. Everything worked smoothly while we were in Italy -- we had good hotels and great tour guides, but I think the highlight for me was the private drivers! Driving in Cinque Terre, Rome, and the Amalfi Coast would have been stressful and it was wonderful to leave that to the professionals. And always, Top Travel was a phone call or an email away if we needed them."

What travelers are saying

"My husband and I live in Canada, we spent February in Malaga Spain and booked a full day tour to Tangier Morocco on Feb 27th through website HAPPYtoVISIT. Julia Travel happened to be the operator. I received email confirmation from both HAPPYtoVISIT and Julia Travel confirmed the date and pick up location. We were advised that we had to call Julia Travel within 48 hours of the tour date to reconfirm our tour date with pick up time and location which we did as instructed. From very beginning of the booking to the phone call confirmation we were told that we were going to be picked up at 5:30 am at a bus stop in central Malaga. We got to the spot at 5:15 am that morning and waited until 6:30am and no one showed up to pick us up! We called Julia Travel at 6 am and the person who picked up the phone doesn’t speak English. We finally with a woman name Marta after 9 am who could speak English and were told that the bus was there at 4:30 am. This is simply not believable given the previous confirmations of 5:30 am pick up time. Obviously she just lied to us to get off the phone. She replied my email said any complaints should send to HAPPYtoVISIT since I have booked the tour through them. HAPPYtoVISIT issued me the full refund within 24 hours after I filed complaint, however the experience left us with very bad taste.what a waste of time and energy! Since the tour was towards our last days in Malaga that we were not able to rebook the tour with another company. My husband and I travelled extensively, this was the worst experience we ever had! Avoid using Julia Travel would be the advice!!"

Senior Tours in Europe Tour Selection Trips

  • River cruises are an appealing way to tour Europe in a relaxed mode that offers sightseeing in both atmospheric villages and big cities.
  • Point-to-point walking or cycling tours are a great way to meet locals along trails, in pubs, or in small town settings.
  • While you can see something of Europe in a week, allowing at least ten days to two weeks for one to three countries is more satisfying.
  • When booking your tour, since many Europeans now speak English, don’t be too concerned with language barriers. Your guides should also be able to translate when necessary.
  • Visiting Europe in the fall or early spring is a great way to avoid crowds. Summer is the busiest season, followed closely by mid winter when many travel to see the famous Christmas markets.

Additional details

Senior tours in Europe usually involve less walking and focus on in depth cultural and historical points of interest. When younger travelers talk about “immersive” or “authentic” travel, this can often mean situations that older travelers would find uncomfortable.

For senior travelers, immersive and authentic is still highly valued though maybe with a few more amenities available. This will mean more premium level hotels, personal service, and local restaurants with a fine wine list - rather than the most cutting edge street food vendor.

Europe tours can be challenging for some senior travelers. Many city streets are paved with cobblestones which, while lovely and picturesque, are uneven and difficult to walk on for extensive distances. Be sure to bring sturdy footwear!

Top Tour Activities in Europe for Seniors

1. Guided History Walk - Europe is full of rich and storied histories. Tour companies with seniors in mind often incorporate lively and engaging history walks into their itineraries. These are often highly focused on a particular theme or era and led by scholars and experts in a particular field.

2. Cooking Class - Cuisines in Europe are extremely variable - often changing dramatically region by region within a single country. Cooking classes are a fabulous way to get to know the culture and meet locals who are eager to share their traditional dishes and cooking methods with visitors.

3. Coastal Walks - One of the most popular outdoor activities in Europe for seniors is a brisk coastal walk, taking in spectacular views. This activity is particularly common in the United Kingdom, where the coastal trails are rugged yet mostly flat - manageable for a wide variety of physical levels.

4. Northern Lights - A classic bucket list item that takes some specific planning to check off, the Northern Lights can be seen from a few key places in Europe. Most notably, Iceland, Finland, Norway, Sweden, and parts of Scotland. This activity by definition is not for the un-adventurous - it will be cold, and to get the best views many tours involve off-roading. But if this is unappealing, finding a luxury lodge in these northern reaches is a great way to glimpse the Aurora.
