About the company

1. Our people are the foundation of our success

Founded by the Swan family in 1988, Adventure Canada is now run by the second generation—Cedar, Alana and Matthew James— and our office staff, who have worked together for years. Our shipboard staffers are like family, too.

2. We only do what we do best

We focus on delivering unsurpassed experiences in the Arctic, the East and West Coasts, Antarctica, and a handful of unique wilderness destinations.

3. Local ties make us stronger

Adventure Canada works closely with communities, and we depend on culturalists with local connections to interpret and enhance our experiences. Our Discovery Fee supports worthy causes and projects in the regions we visit.

4. Exploration, education & enjoyment go hand in hand

Our staff includes storytellers, musicians, historians, artists, scientists and archeologists. We learn as we go, and thoroughly enjoy ourselves in the process.

5. Our travellers build our business for us

Past travellers and personal recommendations have helped establish an enviable reputation. We are proud to say our repeat and referral rate is 35 per cent!

Years in the Making

Founded in 1987, Adventure Canada was created to bring travellers to Canada's "blank spaces", those areas whose remoteness alone made them special. Over the last twenty-five years, along with our guests, we have discovered that there is so much that is extraordinary about the places we travel, from the landscape, wildlife and culture to the history, art and archeology that is unique to every destination. It is our belief that there is so much to see “beyond the binoculars” that drives us to delve deeper into our favourite places with every expedition and continually seek out new destinations. Over the last several years our "Environmental Discovery Voyages" have become increasingly popular, taking us to polar opposites in the Canadian Arctic and the Antarctic, Greenland and Labrador, exploring the East Cost wonders of Newfoundland and Sable Island.

We travel by small expedition ship, the best suited mode of transportation for remote exploration. The number of passengers on our voyages run between 45 and 198, depending on the ship we choose. We believe that these small vessels are superior, as they not only allow us to gain access to places not accessible by larger vessels, but our fleet of Zodiac landing craft permit us to visit some of the most remote places imaginable - the key to expeditionary travel. It is our desire to bring to you a top-notch team of resource and expeditionary staff. We regularly travel with resource teams of 20 or more on a 198-passenger ship, meaning you get more time and personal interaction with the specialists. This also allows us to cover a wider range of subjects, which makes for a more complete understanding of the areas we travel through.

In addition to our voyages each year, we offer a series of specialized departures that focus on the art and culture or the natural history and photography of an area under our Art is Adventure and PhotoWild! programs. These programs are specifically crafted to allow time for in-depth exploration and discovery with the guides selected for each. We hope to see you in these "blank spaces" as we travel Canada and increasingly, the world, looking beyond the binoculars whenever we can.

Our Commitment to Respecting the Cultures & Environment of Earth’s Special Places

Adventure Canada believes strongly in the importance of social and environmental sustainability and has long been committed to the practice of responsible travel.

We continue to reaffirm our approach to conscientious operations, by committing to make sustainable business choices whenever possible, and encouraging our partners to do the same.

Over the course of our history we have proudly been involved in carefully selected regional, nation-wide and international efforts aiming to make our world a better place.

In 1996 Adventure Canada established our Discovery Fund to strengthen sustainable initiatives and projects in the regions we travel.

The Discovery Fund is under the umbrella of Adventure Canada’s Responsible Business Practice Policy. The Discovery Fund is supported by a fee, $250 per Adventure Canada traveller, added to our tour cost. The Discovery Fund directly assists local and national organizations involved with social and economic community development along with environmental and wildlife preservation. Each year our support extends to both high profile and grassroots ventures.

In recent years Adventure Canada and the Discovery Fund have been active supporters of the following key organizations: Project North, Torngat National Parks Clean-Up Project, Atlantic Whales, Unikkausivut, National Inuit Youth Council, The Walrus Foundation, Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami and the Royal Canadian Geographical Society, among many others.
