Best Things to Do in Guatemala

Iconic Attractions & Hidden Gem Travel Experiences

Guatemala

This smaller Central American country still packs a major punch: you’ll find Mayan ruins, volcanoes, beautiful lakes and beaches, rainforests, colorful markets, colonial cities, and intriguing cultures. While in many ways a highly desirable tourist destination, various safety concerns mean that Guatemala is best explored by guided tour.

Top Guatemala Experiences

Experiencing the grandeur of the ancient Mayan temples and pyramids of Tikal.

Walking the cobbled streets of Antigua to view the beautifully preserved Spanish-style colonial buildings.

Taking a boat ride on the crystal blue waters of Lake Atitlan to visit the small villages that dot its shores.

Wandering through the crowded market at Chichicastenango

Hiking up an active volcano, if you dare.

Relaxing on a beach along Guatemala’s Caribbean shore.

Enjoying nature walks, birding, and viewing sea turtles in the rainforests and along the Pacific and Caribbean coasts.

All the activities on water were fantastic. The amazing abundant birdlife in the wetlands as we travelled by boat at dawn. The canoeing into a huge cave, the canoe ride back to our hotel and the most amazing snorkeling trip I could ever have hoped for surrounded by nurse sharks, rays and tropical fish. In addition we saw the Mayan temples at times when the large tourist groups had left the sites which made the experience even more atmospheric when we were often surrounded by jungle and the unique wildlife that inhabited it. The sound and sight of howler monkeys in the treetops as we walked around will stay with me for ever. Our early morning and evening walks were fabulous too. Wilfred our tour leader gave all of his time to us and ensured we maximised our experiences wherever we were. He was absolutely exceptional.

Fantastic tour covering five countries. Definitely “full on” with long journeys but amazing scenery and experiences. Miguel (tour guide) was awesome - friendly, knowledgable, and an expert at whisking us through the borders. Confident he would have coped with any crises with a smile. Highlights for me were Nicaragua (Granada, Leon, Cerro ***** volcano hike), Copan, and Antigua de Guatemala.

Contrasts of Mexico + Yucatan Peninsula Extension
Tour leader Luis was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. Itinerary for first 2 weeks was packed as full as it could have been, followed by a more relaxed week 3. There were some long journeys but transport was comfortable and there were plenty of stops. Hotels varied from very comfortable to more basic, but all were clean and welcoming.
