Best Things to Do in Israel

Iconic Attractions & Hidden Gem Travel Experiences

Israel

Israel is a tiny country – with just a bit more land than the U.S. state of Massachusetts – but is holy land to three major world religions: Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. While much of it is desert, Biblical sites abound and its capital, Jerusalem, is one of the world’s great cities. Rich in history, culture, and religious tradition, Israel is always memorable.

Top Israel Experiences

Things to do in Israel - Expert’s guide

1. Jerusalem

Temple mount Israel Jerusalem

At the center of three major world religions is Jerusalem. This holy land is one of, if not the, top pilgrimage destinations in Israel, visited by hundreds of thousands of people every year. There are many wonderful sides to Jerusalem you can explore, from ancient historical sites to bustling markets.

The golden “Dome of the Rock” is an instantly recognizable site in Jerusalem, and a top tourist attraction. Mount Zion as well is included in most Israel tour itineraries that visit Jerusalem.

2. Wailing Wall

Wailing Wall in Israel

This ancient site is among the holiest of pilgrimage destinations for those of Jewish faith. Also called the Western Wall or the Kotel, the wall is some 2,000 years old and has been consistently visited throughout the centuries. Even those who don’t practice can partake in writing down a wish and inserting it into the ancient cracks in the wall.

3. Sea of Galilee

Birds at sunset over the Sea of Galilee in Israel

The Sea of Galilee is actually not a sea at all but a freshwater lake in the northern region of Israel. Also going by the names Kinneret, “Lake of Gennesaret”, and “Sea of Tiberias”, the lake is popular for swimming and the surrounding region is great for hiking.

In ancient times the lake was home to several settlements As with most top sites in Israel, there is religious significance at the Sea of Galilee as well. It was here that supposedly Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist.

4. Eliat

This port town on the southernmost coastal point of Israel is well known for marine life, particularly coral reefs. On of these reefs is named Dolphin Reef, and you guessed it - swimming among the dolphins here is one of highlights of a trip to Eliat.

The Coral Beach Nature Reserve and underwater observatory is also a huge draw for visitors. Scuba divers flock to Eliat for the chance to dive in the Red Sea, which is frequently called one of the best scuba diving areas in the world.

Eliat is also right on the border with Jordan, and a popular starting point for day or two day tours to see the ancient city of Petra.

5. Ein Gedi

Waterfall hike in Ein Gedi Israel

If you’ve had enough of deserts and stone ruins, then head out to this beautiful reserve for a respite in nature. Literally meaning “spring of the kid” this is the second largest oasis in Israel.

Boasting a wealth of outdoor activities you can partake in, from strolling through Botanical Gardens to multiple hikes and waterfalls, Ein Gedi is one of the most popular natural areas in Israel.

6. Tel Aviv

Young group traveling in Tel Aviv

One of the most common words used to describe the bustling metropolis that is Tel Aviv is “hip”. If Jerusalem is a window to the ancient past in Israel, then Tel Aviv is the window to modern Israeli culture. The city is lively, with a storied nightlife, youth culture, and social scene. This is where you want to come for a taste of local life in Israel.

7. Jaffa

Jaffa coast Israel

Jaffa is an ancient port city on the Mediterranean, the oldest section of Tel Aviv. It’s a great place to relax and take slow meandering strolls through the charming streets. One very popular attraction in Jaffa is the flea market. You’re sure to enjoy browsing through and maybe uncovering some treasures to bring home. Or perhaps you’ll simply wile away a sunny afternoon at one of the many cafes along the water.

8. The Dead Sea

Dead Sea in Israel

While you’re visiting Israel, there’s simply no way you can pass up a dip, or rather a “float” in the Dead Sea. Famous for having such hypersaline water that you can float incredibly easily, the Dead Sea is a regular fixture on Israel tour itineraries.

Because of the high salt content, there are a few top tips to make sure your visit is as enjoyable as possible: firstly, don’t shave. The salt will definitely sting a bit if you have super smooth skin. Additionally, be sure to tightly cover any open cuts or sensitive skin areas with a bandage.

Secondly, take advantage of the mud and slather it on! It’s like a spa treatment and your skin will feel amazing after your dip - plus it doubles as sun protection (though you should definitely also use sunblock).

9. Masada

Masada hike in Israel

Near the Dead Sea, this mountain fortress is a great way to take in panoramic views of the Dead Sea region while also enjoying a walk among ancient ruins at the summit. This was once the location of King Herod’s palace as well as a last outpost of Zealots, fighting off Roman armies.

If you are looking for an active kind of day, you can hike to the top along the “Snake Path”, taking in amazing views along the way. Or if you’d rather take it easy, there is a cable car you can take.

Jordan Discovery
The Jordan Discovery tour was an exceptional week, we had a brilliant time. The itinerary is well-balanced, with a mixture of history, culture, hiking, spectacular scenery and relaxation. There were plenty of opportunities for local experiences like an Ottoman bath, snorkelling in the Red Sea (those are at an extra cost) and camping in the desert.

We were a group of 14, and the bus was comfortable (although if you have long legs don’t sit in the front seats!) and the wifi worked really well inside the bus with only a few blank spots in more rural areas. There was also unlimited water provided for 7 dinars per person.

The hotels were comfortable, with probably the best being the Toledo Hotel in Amman. Don’t expect luxury, but the rooms were clean and they did the job. The breakfasts left a little to be desired, with limited options even for meat-eaters at some of the hotels. I’m vegan so I was very limited (I ate a lot of toast) but that wasn’t a surprise. At the restaurants we went to there were good vegan/vegetarian options like houmous, bread, aubergine, salads, chips (fries), vegetable dishes etc. and it was all very tasty but became quite samey after several days in a row.

I saw on the website that it’s advisable to bring a sleeping sheet for camping in Wadi Rum and water shoes for the Dead Sea. Because of the Israel-Palestine war everywhere we went was uncrowded, even Petra (I went in April 2024) and this meant we were upgraded to twin tents in Wadi Rum and sheets were provided, but I’d imagine they’d come in handy in the communal tent. I definitely recommend water shoes for the Dead Sea as the salt is very sharp underfoot. It’s also a good idea to bring good earplugs for the early morning calls to prayer if you don’t pray. And there were a few hours of downtime in Wadi Rum where there was no wifi or signal so I recommend taking a book or something in your overnight bag for that night.

While in Petra, I’d recommend the walk up to the Monastery, but be prepared for a bit of a tough walk especially if it’s hot. And when I was there in April 2024 the walk up to see the Treasury from above was closed, but this wasn’t advertised so check before you plan around hiking this trail.

Our guide Musa was excellent, he really made the trip. He was hugely knowledgeable and passionate about his country, and gave us lots of interesting information not only about the places we visited but the history, geopolitics, economy, religions and societies of Jordan and the wider region. His English was impeccable and he was also kind and patient with the group (especially admirable as he was fasting for Ramadan) - we couldn’t have asked for a better tour leader.

Overall the trip was a great way to see lots of highlights of Jordan in a relatively short space of time. Everything ran very smoothly, communication with Explore and with our guide was easy, and all the logistics worked perfectly. I’d highly recommend the trip!

Jordan Discovery
A superb trip. ‘Explore’ at its best. A varied itinerary with different experiences every day ranging from exploring iconic historic sites to snorkelling over spectacular coral reefs in the Red Sea, from sampling the sights, sounds and tastes of downtown Amman to ‘camping’ in the desert at Wadi Rum, from enjoying a number of excellent meals featuring local specialties to floating in the Dead Sea. Each day different, each day full of surprises.

And above all, a super local tour guide, Abdallah Alhlalat. He was a constant source of information wherever we went who, despite the demands of fasting during Ramadan, always kept us well informed, answering all our questions, showing us much that was beyond the remit in our itinerary and caring for our wellbeing throughout. Two illustrations: even after we’d returned to the UK we were still exchanging correspondence about the identity of a flower that we’d come across at Wadi Rum and secondly, we’ve realised that we learned more about Jordan from Abdallah than we did from reading 332 pages of ‘Lonely Planet Jordan’.

Spice Trails of Petra
Jordan was one surprise after another. The desert has many forms and facets. It was wonderful to walk through Wadi Rum, and then Petra. Our leader, Salah, was both entertaining and extremely knowledgeable. This trip took me into a world unlike my own. The people we met were honest and kind, and we travelers were a compatible group. Explore packed so much variety and interest into one week!
