About This Route
The Machame route, also referred to as the Whiskey route, is one of the most popular routes on Kilimanjaro and a favorite for us. Machame route is one of the highest summit success rates given the topography and nature of the route which allows climbers to “trek high & sleep low” hence making it a more favorable route for acclimatization. This route offers some of the most spectacular scenery while on the mountain.

The Machame route starts in the south west side of the mountain and proceeds steeply north, traversing the Shira plateau and eventually joining the Shira and Lemosho routes just after the Shira cave camp. The Machame route can be done in minimum 7 days but a 7 day trek is recommended to allow climbers been well rested and acclimatized before making the final ascent to the summit.

Going on a safari has been a lifelong dream of mine

Expect in Africa Safari exceeded my expectations. Our driver was Raymond. Raymond was extremely knowledgeable, he had an answer for every question we had. He was able to use his knowledge of birds and animals to locate every animal we wanted to see. He was professional and kind. We will be returning with our children and using Raymond again. We also loved the accommodations. We felt safe and the tents were clean and spacious. If you are considering safari, this company is who you need to book with.

I feel truly grateful for this experience

Back home after a great adventure: 5895m in 6 days. Highest mountain in Africa and highest single-standing mountain in the world. KILIMANJARO left me breathless in every sense of the word. I've never experienced physical exhaustion to that extend, but I have never seen landscapes this beautiful. I was so lucky to have had an amazing and supportive team with me all the way up the mountain. Thank you, Jenny Takyi, for having connected two friends. Lawrence Thomas, for having made this adventure come true and for having been on the trail with me. Thanks to my kind, hugging and singing guide, Ellie. And thank you so much to the rest of the crew for having literally made this possible by carrying all this stuff up this monster called a mountain, for your smiles, for amazing food and for kicking me out of bed every morning ;)
If you ever consider doing a Kilimanjaro trek yourself, I can only recommend Expect in Africa Safar(https://www.facebook.com/expectinafricasafari/friends…), you couldn't be in better hands!
I feel truly grateful for this experience (and for having made it down safe and sound). It was worth every step of the way.

We choose Expect In Africa Safari because it matched our needs. A small business who is ran perfectly. We had all the information we needed before to do the safari for 2 days. They helped to choose the best option for the national park. We choose Tarangire and Ngorogoro Crater. During the safari, the guide was great always taking time to explain us the wildlife and other facts about the park. He has a lot of experience. The accommodation they booked for us was beyond expectation. Overall the safari was amazing and we saw a lot of animals especially babies lions.
I recommend them.

Spent the night in a tree top shack close to the safari park and enjoyed the day in the park in a four wheel drive. Couldn't see the big four as the lions evaded us. Overall a great experience to see the wildlife up close.

Itinerary

DAY 1: ARRIVE IN TANZANIA
You will be picked up at the Kilimanjaro International Airport and transferred to your arranged Hotel in Arusha town, you will meet your guide who will brief you on your upcoming trek and do an equipment check to make sure you have all the necessary mountain gear. Gear which is missing can be rented on this day. Hotel is bed & Breakfast

Hotel: Bed & Breakfast basis

DAY 2: MACHAME GATE (1790M) TO MACHAME CAMP (3010M)
Two hour’s drive from Arusha lies the gate to the Machame route, where we complete park formalities, meet our crew of porters and start to climb! The first section of the route climbs steadily and passes through magnificent, dense rainforest. This path is less well-trodden so it can get somewhat overgrown in places and it is often wet and muddy underfoot.

Distance covered: 10.8km / 6.7mi
approx. time taken: 6 hours
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Included

DAY 3: MACHAME CAMP (3010M) TO SHIRA CAMP (3845M)
Our route continues on up through the forest until we reach the steep ascent onto the Shira Plateau, where there are rewarding views of the mountain. Looking back, you will be able to see Mt Meru rising high above Arusha town in the distance.

Distance covered: 5.4km / 3.4mi
Approx. time taken: 5 hours
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Included

DAY 4: SHIRA CAVE (3845M) TO BARRANCO CAMP (3960M)
Walking now on high moorland, the landscape changes the entire character of the trek. We traverse the southwest side of Kilimanjaro, passing underneath the Lava Tower and the final section of the Western Breach and finally reach camp The day has been spent at altitude (up to 4600m), but we have followed the mountaineering code of ‘walk high, sleep low’ to aid your body’s acclimatization to altitude.

Distance covered: 10.8km / 6.7mi
Approx. time taken: 8 hours
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Included

DAY 5: BARRANCO CAMP (3960M) TO BARAFU CAMP (4640M)
Our day starts by descending into the Great Barranco, a huge ravine. We then exit steeply, up the Great Barranco Wall, which divides us from the southeastern slopes of Kibo. It’s a climb over rock, not technical, but long and tiring. Passing underneath the Heim and Kersten glaciers, we head towards the Karanga valley, which is our last stop for fresh water before the summit. Scree now forms the terrain as we walk through arid and desolate land towards Barafu camp.

Distance covered: 8.5km / 5.3mi
Approx. time taken: 8 hours
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Included

DAY 6: BARAFU CAMP (4640M) TO UHURU PEAK (5895M) & DOWN TO MWEKA CAMP (3100M)
We start off at around midnight, and walk steeply upwards to the summit glaciers. We will be climbing scree for 4 to 5 hours but gain incredible height over a short distance. The views are spectacular. We should be on the crater rim at Stella Point (5739m) as the first rays of the sun hit us. Spectacular ice cliffs within the crater surround us and the views to jagged Mawenzi peak and beyond are breathtaking. Another hour’s walking takes us to the summit, Uhuru Peak (5895m). We begin our descent by returning to Stella Point and then descending on scree slope and track back to Barafu Camp for breakfast, before finally heading down to Mweka Camp for a long well-earned rest.

Distance covered: 16.4km / 9.6mi
Approx. time taken: 13hours – 15hours
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Included

DAY 7: TREK MWEKA CAMP (3100M) TO MWEKA GATE (1630M)
A gentle trek takes us down through the rainforest to Mweka Gate, where we complete park formalities and receive certificates, which you can hang up with pride! We are then met by our vehicles and return to the hotel in Arusha, where you can treat yourself to a welcome shower then celebrate with cold drinks. Overnight at your arranged Hotel

Distance covered: 9.1km / 7.5miles
Approx. time taken: 3 hours
Hotel: Bed & Breakfast

DAY 8: DEPART TANZANIA
The day is left free to wind down after the trek before your flight home. Depending on flight times you could go and explore Arusha town and grab some souvenirs before heading to the airport. Our vehicle will be ready to take you to the airport at your time.
Meals: Breakfast and Lunch Box Included

Additional Information:

The following is very important to consider

You will need visas for entry to Tanzania. Though you can get these in Africa, your travel will go smoother if you get them in advance through the respective embassies.

Make a photocopy or list of the following items: Passports (including the page with the visa stamped in them and the pages with photos and data), plane tickets, yellow booklet showing your yellow fvaccination, list of all medications you might require, listing of all travelers' cheque numbers and money if possible, list of serial numbers for cameras, etc. Keep this list someplace apart from where you keep these other items

Keep track of your passport above all. Loss of a passport can destroy your trip and cost considerable money during the time required to replace it. On your international flight, pack as if the airline might misplace your bags. Keep things you will need right away in your carry-on. It seldom happens, and almost always the bags arrive a couple of days later, but this way, if the bags do not arrive with you, you will be able to continue on your safari while the airline finds them
If bags get misplaced at the airport

We hope you don't lose your bags, but this happens sometimes. If your bags do not show up, do the following:

Report the problem to your air carrier inside the airport at the Baggage Claim before passing the CUSTOM and fill out the required paperwork. Request compensation for your inconvenience (often $50.00 for emergency purchases and a bag with simple toiletries and a tee shirt). Ask them when they expect the bag will arrive and tell them where you will be based on your itinerary. Leave the keys with the airline so they can clear the bags through customs. Ask the airline to go with you to advise Customs Officer that bags were lost so there will be no problems further in getting your bags cleared when they arrive. Inform our staff so we can work with the airline to get your bags to you at the earliest convenience.
