What travelers are saying

"Egypt is the most amazing destination. it was a trip of a lifetime. Trafalgar made sure our tour saw all the most important places, and with the most knowledgeable Egyptologist who kept us safe, engaged, all while having alot of fun! I was concerned before I left home, but quickly my fears were laid to rest. We were met by Mo at the airport, who seamlessly got us to our destination. The hotel, cruise, food, stateroom, staff and entertainment were fantastic. And what a value! I already miss Hany Attia, Lionel Richie in the M/S miriam souvenir shop, and Mo, as well as our new Habibi from the tour. What a blast. I dont think i could ever top this vacation Thank you again. It was a trip of a lifetime."

Highlights

  • Cathedral of Lima: This morning, explore Peru's buzzing capital with your Local Expert, including the Cathedral of Lima, the Government Palace, the Archbishop’s Palace and City Hall.
  • Visit Museo Larco in Lima’s Pueblo Libre District, the highest-rated museum in South America housing the largest collection of Pre-Columbian art. Meet a Local Expert who will lead you through the museum and share its private collection with you. You’ll also delve into Peruvian culture, its ancient history and religious beliefs and the role of women in ancient Peru.
  • Lima: Visit Casa Aliaga, an impressive mansion the Aliaga family has called home for 17 generations. Meet Wilma Ehni de Aliaga, who’ll show you around her family's impressive mansion and share personal stories. Learn how the colonial home dates to the founding of Lima in 1535 and is the oldest dwelling in the Americas that has been in the same family for generations. Discover how the home was rebuilt and reshaped after earthquakes and architectural trends and represents both the Colonial and Republican history of Lima.
  • Sacred Valley: The UNESCO World Heritage Maras Salt Mine will inspire the mind of any curious traveler. Learn how salt once harvested by Incas at this site is now exported to the entire world. Discover how the Incas found a water stream with high salt content and learned - in Pre-Incan times - how to build terraces to extract salt. You’ll be amazed at how, to this day, it is not known where the water actually comes from and has only been measured in the last 20 years during which the flow and intensity has not changed.
  • Sacred Valley: Peru’s Incan history and archaeology will inspire the mind of any curious traveler. At the Moray Incan laboratory northwest of Cusco, learn how the Incas determined the ideal altitude to grow crops in the Sacred Valley. You’ll be fascinated by how this ancient culture learned how to build these terraced circular depressions on a high plateau at an altitude of about 11,500 feet and experimented with different kinds of soils and temperatures to grow their crops.

50-Plus Travel Tour Selection Trips

  • If choosing a wildlife safari, you may want to look for one that features shorter distances driving over rough, bumpy roads; staying local or flying between different reserves is worth the time and money in forgone sore bones.
  • Some river cruise lines, cycling tour operators and other travel providers market almost exclusively to ages 50 and up, while others also cater to younger clientele, including families; it’s your choice.
  • “Comfortable” lodging doesn’t necessarily mean “luxurious;” there are many budget tours that offer two- or three-star accommodations -- perhaps in small inns with lots of local atmosphere -- that you may find not only acceptable but adding to the charm.
  • If authenticity is important when you travel, look for guided trips that offer visits to local residents’ homes, schools, or work locations.
  • If you want to assist the local people in destinations you are traveling to, look for tour operators who “give back” to the communities you visit, such as making donations to local schools.
  • The size of a guided tour group can make a huge difference in your enjoyment of a trip; generally speaking, the smaller the group, the better the experience.
  • Be sure to notify the trip organizers and leaders if you have special dietary or medicinal requirements, physical impairments that may affect your ability to participate in all group activities, or other needs -- most will try to accommodate you if possible.
  • Be realistic about your physical abilities and stamina when choosing an adventure-oriented trip. There is more than one way to get to Machu Picchu.
  • If you have grown children and/or grandchildren, consider asking them to join you on a multi-generational trip; some travel providers offer special itineraries geared toward several different age groups.
