"We joined the Intrepid “Real Italy Food Tour” and enjoyed it thoroughly. Our tour guide, Micol, was very knowledgeable and provided us with lots of good information. It seems Micol knew many of the staff of the venues we visited, including the pasta making class we attended. Our group of 11 travelers was extremely compatible, which greatly added to the fun and enjoyment."

What travelers are saying

"My first trip with this agency, and I will not hesitate to recommend it to friends and family. The right mix of planned activities and free time. Good central location of all the hotels. The only fly in the ointment was the last hotel where there were vibration and noise in several rooms and the hotel staff was extremely arrogant and rude. They blatantly asserted looking me right in the eye that they cannot hear any noise, even though more than one person from our group was complaining. However. Tucan's guide Cindy was extremely helpful and did her best to resolve the situation, in spite of the hotel staff's behaviour. On the whole, Cindy was great, very helpful and caring."

What travelers are saying

"I have travelled with ROW numerous times, including four trips on the Rogue River. Every trip has been wonderful and every person associated with ROW has been nice, knowledgeable, professional and fun. The Rogue is a great river and the trip is an excellent one for two people or a large group—and I have done both. I’ve taken both of my kids, one time each, and have organized groups of colleagues twice; most recently in 2019 when 14 of us gathered. The guides at ROW are great and help to make the trip very enjoyable. The scenery, lodging and the wonderful outdoors including warm air and refreshing water, make for a wonderful escape from the everyday routine. The fact that this trip offers beds and indoor plumbing is a nice benefit and allows those who have an aversion to camping a chance to see the wilderness. I have recommended ROW and the Rogue trip more times than I can count and my group has already reserved our trip for 2021. What are you waiting for?"

What travelers are saying

"We particularly wanted to do this trip because of the abundance of wildlife we expected to encounter and selected this ship because they offered the kayaking experience. Overall, the weather was very good. Most people seemed like minded and were there for the adventurous experience. Accommodations Review They upgraded our cabin and we were very pleased with the amount of space and the amenities in the room. We appreciated the twin windows and being able to see humpbacks diving from our cabin. It was kept very clean and it was a treat to have our bed turned down with chocolates on the pillow each night. Meals Review We liked the variety and the quality of the food. There was always something new to try. The dining room staff was very professional and personable. Crew & Guides Review Solon was our Principal Trip Leader. He was incredibly professional and it seemed like he was constantly working to maximize the encounters with wildlife and scenery, taking advantage of all the weather opportunities and going to places that they don't often go. He worked very closely with the captain who was very accommodating and caring about us having a memorable voyage. Aymie and Andrew were our kayak guides. We went out to kayak 10 different times and were able to get to know both of them well. They worked hard to keep us safe and well informed. They made sure that we didn't miss out on any land excursions. We've had quite a few kayak guides over the years that we've paddled and we loved these two. Marla was the marine biologist aboard the ship. She was very enthusiastic and had a passion for marine mammals that was infectious. We loved listening to her presentations and looked forward to hearing her voice on the PA saying that there was another whale sighting. Colin, the geologist aboard the ship, was very knowledgeable and able to make difficult subjects understandable to the passengers. Itinerary Review The trip far, far, far, far, far, far exceeded our expectations. I had one "far" in the sentence when we left South Georgia Island after seeing 250,000 King Penguins at St. Andrews Point and added the second when we saw blue whales on two different days. The third "far" was added when we saw hundreds of whales for 6 hours along the iceberg, A68a. I added another "far" when we kayaked for over an hour with humpbacks all around and another "far" when minke whales were all around the kayaks the next day. The last "far" was added the day we didn't paddle since a leopard seal was all around the kayaks and then an orca came close. We had so many incredible experiences that we could never experience all of them in the same trip again. The guides told us that the close encounters that we had didn't happen very often and that we were very lucky that they all happened on our trip. The only thing that we didn't like was portions of the Drake Passage when it was a tad rough, but that experience gives us something to talk about. Transportation Review We made our transportation arrangements through another travel agency. Traveler Advice Make sure that you take sea sickness meds. Take advantage of every opportunity to see wildlife."

What travelers are saying

"Summary over a cruise on the Haute Seine and Yonne on a barge. As seasoned cruisers, knowing well all aspects of cruising on seas and rivers, we had no experience about traveling on a barge in a canal. It was also time to overcome this lack. A number of companies offer this kind of cruising on barge with 8 to 16 passengers, however very often at exorbitant prices. Luckily, we discovered that the company CroisiEurope offers one week cruise on various canals in Europe, at very decent price, especially considering that all is inclusive (full board, all alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks and all excursions) on modern barges with a maximum of 22 passengers. We opted for the barge Ms Deborah, which cruises on the canal de la Loire, with the Briare to Nevers’ route. We were looking forward to this itinerary because the proposed excursions particularly suited us. Unfortunately, only a few days before departure, we were informed that due of a lack of water in the Loire canal the Ms Deborah was switched over to the Haute Seine and Yonne for a new itinerary from Paris to Sens. Despites the fact that this new itinerary didn’t really meet our desires, especially the excursions, we decided to accept the change. Our group of 6 persons from Switzerland was very warmly greeted by all members of the crew when arriving on the quai de Grenelle in Paris where we see the MS DEBORAH for the first time, our floating home for the week. With its two dominating colours blue and white, it is difficult not to fall in love with this beautiful small ship. We were invited immediately for the welcome cocktail during which we met officially the crew and the other six individual passengers originating from New Zealand, England and the USA. With less time than it needs to tell, the relation between us was created, so that everyone felt part of a bunch of friends knowing each other for long time. There is no need to present here the MS Deborah itself, as this is already thoroughly done on the Cruise Critic page. The crew of 6 persons is composed of a captain, a sailor, a cruise director, a chef, a waitress and a cabin hostess who put all their efforts to satisfy the passengers and offer them the best possible service. The captain as well as the sailor are always trying to make passengers at ease, answer questions or even bring a drink. The lady cruise director is omnipresent, taking care of the passengers better than a mother hen would do. The talented young French chef aims to produce dishes which please everybody. His outstanding sauces and excellent desserts should be particularly praised. However, referring to comments we made during a cruise on the Seine Princess two years ago, we cannot understand that why today it is not possible to offer the choice of a light buffet at lunch instead a three or even four course menu! The always smiling and friendly Hungarian waitress was very caring and attentive, without forgetting the cabin hostess doing a great job in the cabins, the public spaces and even the kitchen. It wouldn’t be fair to name a single person as all members of the crew, without any exception, do all they can to make the cruise unforgettable. Our one-week cruise on the barge Ms Deborah enables us today to make the following comments: ~ a cruise on a barge cannot be compared to any other kind of cruise ~ despite all the comfort offered on modern barge, one must be very aware that life on board happens at a restraint space, requiring therefore much flexibility and understanding in all aspects from all passengers ~ in our case, being only 12 passengers, we had the opportunity to take our meals on the terrace. We also never had the feeling that the boat was overcrowded. This can be different when the ship is full, especially by bad weather ~ the state of mind between the passengers who are mostly of foreign nationalities, who don’t know each other and don’t speak French, must function well right from the beginning ~ if the interrelation works, it is difficult to find a more relaxing and enjoyable way of travelling ~ the success on a barge is mainly due on the quality of its crew. Ms Deborah’s crew members have quickly created a family spirit on board, showing also that they genuinely like what they do ~ excursions can play a major role in choosing an itinerary. Not speaking French or English can be a handicap Do we recommend to do a cruise on a barge? Yes, definitively! It’s affordable, the atmosphere on board is unique, the routes can be very interesting. In our case, this second try with CroisiEurope gives them a better note."

What travelers are saying

"Dimitris was everything we could have looked for in a travel agent. Following the parameters we laid out for him, he provided us with the absolute best options for our travels. He was both honest and patient with us, and made sure we took as much time as we needed to finalize a trip that felt right for our group. Dimitris informed us on everything that was going on throughout our booking and travel process, so there were no surprises along the way. He answered every question we had and made sure we were prepared when we arrived in Athens. Andreas went above and beyond in his role as our skipper for the week. He was patient and thoughtful with our group, and put so much effort into making sure we had the best trip possible. We felt very safe and protected throughout all of our travels, and were taken to some of the most incredible place – places that weren’t even on our initial itinerary. Andreas’ expertise in his craft and his companionate demeanor are the reasons our trip was as fantastic as it was. He exceeded all of our expectations and genuinely made this trip one of the best of our lives. Thank you, Dimitris and Andreas, for giving us a week we will never forget! We can honestly say we would not have had the same experience if it wasn't for all of your help and consideration."

Aegean Sea Tour Selection Trips

  • The Aegean covers thousands of square miles that extend from mainland Greece to Turkey and south to Crete; boat travel can take time, but is more authentic and relaxing than flying
  • If you have a chance to travel the Turkish coast by gulet (a traditional vessel), grab it
  • With hundreds of island and coastal villages, the Aegean area merits multiple visits
  • You have a choice of tours that visit only Greece or only the Turkish coast, or both
  • Look beyond the beaches, alluring as they are, to tours that also include archaeology, history, and culture; this is the cradle of Western civilization

Additional details

Aegean Sea cruises are often separated into two distinct age groups. Many are focused on young travelers, in the 18-39 range, looking for a yacht party atmosphere. It’s no secret that Mykonos is the “party island” of Greece, and this is a focal point of many youth oriented tour groups.

On the other side of the spectrum, you’ll find delightfully slow paced luxurious tours, taking in the spectacular Santorini sunrise from your deck, with a day planned of beach walks, hiking, sailing excursions, snorkeling, and history tours.

Greece and Turkey are the stars of the Aegean Sea, and most cruises and tours in the region are long enough to visit both.

Best time to visit the Aegean Sea

There really isn’t a bad time to visit this region of Europe. However a few considerations you might want to take in include:

Spring break - Unless you’re a young college student, you may want to avoid the spring breakers heading to the Greek islands for a good time. This crowd can be loud and likes to party - there’s usually a lot of drinking going on, and this leads to rambunctious behavior - both on the water and on the shore. It can feel like a bit of a take-over, so if you’re looking for a relaxing cruise around the islands, late March through early April might be a time to avoid.

Also, it’s important to note that Easter is a very busy and popular holiday in Greece, and so you may run into some closures and festivals traveling around March or April.

Summer time crowds - summer is by far the busiest travel time, so the crowds will be intense. However on the flipside, during the summer is when everything is open, and there is a lot of choice for activities, excursions, accommodations, and meals. Some coastal areas and islands partially shut down during the off season so expect a more limited range of options.

June and July are some of the hottest months in the Aegean, and the heat plus the crowds can create quite an uncomfortable atmosphere! Some of the best times to visit weather-wise are the shoulder seasons; think April - May and August - September. The ocean waters will still be warm enough to enjoy and you can expect little to no rainfall.

Rainfall and cooler temperatures pick up as you head into winter, and many tourist activities may not be available during the winter months. This is a more popular time to visit the mainland, and ocean activities are slim.

What to wear on an Aegean Sea Cruise

The Aegean is a subsection of the Mediterranean, famous for its gorgeous weather. Much of your time will be spend out on the water, often taking excursions in smaller vessels than your cruise ship.

Sun Protection - Even though Be sure to bring sun protection - sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses will be essential. Lightweight material such as linen or cotton is great for the sun as well, and avoid dark colors as they will absorb the heat.

Footwear - While a good majority of your time will be spent on the idyllic beaches of the Greek islands, be sure to bring one pair of good tennis shoes or hiking boots, and a pair of water shoes, sturdier than flip-flops. Water shoes are a great way to stay comfortable and protect from coral or other sharp underwater areas when embarking and disembarking.

The islands have so much more to offer beyond a day at the beach! There’s tons of hiking and cycling around. Additionally, your tour will probably include a visit to a few ancient ruins - and these are very rocky and dusty with a lot of uneven surfaces.
