Travel Style Travel Style Relaxed A lot of free time, with very few inclusions. Ideal for independent and/or low-key travelers and cruisers.
Full on For those looking to maximize their sight seeing time. You thrive on a packed day’s schedule from 8 am to 6pm, with some (but limited) free time. Most activities and meals included.
Mixed You will have solid amounts of both free time and structured time with some activities and meals included.

Itinerary Focus

Trip Type Trip Type Group Tour Groups are between 25-60 people, typically ~30-40. Usually there will be many opportunities to split off and enjoy meals and excursions in smaller groups. This is the most economical way to travel, saving up to 40% versus booking the same itinerary yourself.
Small Group Tour Small groups are usually defined as between 10 and 24 travelers, often less. If you're the kind of person who enjoys more intimate experiences and personal service this is a good choice. All else being equal you will pay a premium for this style vs a larger group tour.
River Cruise These vessels are smaller than most ocean cruisers, limiting which amenties are available. Passenger counts can vary. One of the biggest advantages of a river cruise is the ability to dock at smaller ports and local villages.
Small Ship Cruise Small ship cruises usually have a max passenger count of 500. The primary purpose of these trips is to spend time off the vessel in local ports (e.g. Mediterranean) or experiencing nature (e.g Galapagos or Antarctica). Cabins can vary from budget to luxury.
Private Guided Private tours give you the undivided attention of a guide, and often involve special access to sites and unique experiences not available to larger groups. This is a great option for families, couples, and small friend groups. Expect to pay a bit more for the extra service.
Self Guided / Independent Tour A travel company plans your itinerary and arranges all the logistics including lodging, local activities, and transportantion. You have the flexibility of a solo trip while still getting the convience and time savings of expert planning. Get 90% of the benefits of a tour, without a guide.
Vacation / Holiday Package Similar to a self guided tour, this usually involves a home base, such as a hotel or resort, with packaged activities and day tours as a part of the stay.
Large Ship Cruise This is the "floating city" experience, with multiple ways to enjoy your vacation aboard the ship as much as on land. Ships are multiple floors, provide several activities, culinary, and shopping options. They often make fewer stops and have less time available for shore excursions.

Lodging Level Lodging Level Camping Typically involves most nights sleeping in tents (sometimes permanent tented sites) or in rustic cabins and lodges.
Basic - 2 star You'll stay in no-frills, but clean and comfortable, hotels or guesthouses. A 'Basic' trip might also involve a few nights of camping.
Value - 3 star Mid-range budget with accommodations ranging from comfortable lodges, guesthouses, and homestays to three star hotels.
Premium - 4 star 3 to 4 star western hotel equivalents. While not all lodging will be 'luxury' they will be quite comfortable by western standards.
Luxury - 5 star The highest level of comfort and service. All accomodations are in four or five star hotels, boutique lodges or high-end homestays.

Overall amazing value. Food, particularly by Topdeck staff, excellent. Spontaneous/flexible; be prepared to pay for lots of extra excursions, on and off your itinerary, in cash.

Food was excellent. Accomodations were better than expected: hostels, but usually with in-suite bathrooms and always only with other members of your tour of the same gender. Don't try to overplan; trip is quite spontaneous and flexible and you won't know much about the schedule/optionals for each city more than a day or so in advance. Optionals will be plentiful and paid in cash. Only do those that are right for you, even if your trip leader really encourages them and most other people are going. These trips are great for solo travelers, but make sure you find people interested in the same things as you...it will probably be easy to find groups to go to bars and clubs with in the evenings, but harder to find people who prefer other evening plans. Driver was excellent and bus was very comfortable and clean, but be prepared to spend a lot of time on it as there is no driving at night. Trip leader extremely knowledgeable, experienced, and helpful. Overall, excellent value and a trip with plenty of time to see the bucket list highlights in each city.

I was pleasantly surprised that in 9 days we fit in a lot of sightseeing in 4 countries. I ususally plan my own trips with a full itinerary but this was the first tour we've taken where I left the planning to the Gate 1. It did not disappoint. I feel like we saw everything that I would have planned for us to do on our own. I don't feel like I have to return to any location to see things we missed. Also the other people on the tour were fun and we all got along well even with the wide age ranges. I highly recommend this tour and Gate 1.

Beer steins, cabarets, sex shops, cows on mountains. This is what people who live in Europe see everyday. Exploring all these cultures in one trip is why I enjoyed our tour so much (aside from our outstanding tour director Brek and amazing driver Ivan). It is a glimpse, so you dont get much time in Amsterdam. Maybe 2.5 hours so I would suggest planning ahead for that. My favorite optionals were the local Switzerland guided horse and carriage tour, and the mount pilatus excursion. Both of which were in Switzerland (I'm Italian and just found Switzerland is my favorite country in Europe). The Caberet optional in paris is expensive, but the show is PERFECT. The Rhine river cruise optional allows you to see almost every important monument in paris while sitting down which is awesome considering it is only a glimpse. Our tour director Brek knew exactly where to stop and at what times it would be best to do so. As soon as we walked off the tour bus to stop and have a look at the Eiffel Tower it literally sparkled. He timed it that way. Anyways, I would take this tour if you're looking for an affordable, stress free, and under 10 day tour.

Both my husband and i had a wonderful time and saw sites we may have never seen before(we have been to Europe before but only to Germany and Amsterdam) Our Tour Guide was Ron Lazet and he was wonderful and very knowledgeable. Would recommend these tours for anyone. I hope to be able to do another tour in the near future

I saw all the sights that I wanted but the amount of walking required from the coach to the venue was at times to arduous. Then when you arrived at some sights, there were stairs to be climbed at times narrow and steep. On one day there were 3 locations to see and frankly if you've seen one windmill, another is very like it.

Amsterdam Tours and Travel Guide

Amsterdam Attractions & Landmarks Guide

It’s hard to imagine a small city that has as much to offer as Amsterdam does.  Fighting neighboring Bruges for the title of ‘Venice of the North’, Amsterdam’s treats expand well beyond its myriad of photogenic canals and the masterpieces of Van Gogh.

Visiting Amsterdam

Amsterdam has something to offer for most people, whether Art, Architecture, Beer, History or just exploring a new city is your thing. Many visitors are surprised by the amount to see that this city has packed in, so be sure to allow yourself time to explore!

Museums in Amsterdam

Some of the city’s big museums are handily packed together into the same area - the city’s museum district. The Van Gogh, Stedelijk and Rijks Museums are all around the corner from each other. Do get up early for the museums and make sure your tickets are pre-booked to avoid queuing for hours.

The Hermitage museum is located near the city’s opera house and on the banks of the River Amstel. A great place to pause for a few photographs and take in some of the city’s stunning water views.

Taking to the Water in Amsterdam

Amsterdam is literally a city built on water, with much of the city being below sea level. No one manages water quite like the Dutch do, and the best way to see Amsterdam has got to be from its beautiful canals.

There are a range of companies offering canal tours with various hop on hop off routes that leave from around the city centre, or take an evening dinner cruise.

For a free mini-tour, free ferries leave from the River Ij side of Central station to various points in Amsterdam North - a great way to see the city from a different side and explore a different part of the city.

Red Lights & Green Lights

Amsterdam is of course famous for its Red Light District and Coffee Shops (which do not sell coffee and are usually easily distinguishable by their aroma). The Red Light District is easy to walk around for those keen to see it, although bear in mind that it does get extremely congested with stag/bachelor party groups on a Friday and Saturday night, and that of course the area is not suitable for children. If coffee shops are your thing, they are located all over the city and can be found easily.

Cycling in Amsterdam

In Amsterdam, as in the rest of the Netherlands, cycling is the main mode of transport for most inhabitants of the city. Do take care when crossing roads and walking in the city as cyclists tend to move fast and take priority over pedestrians and most other vehicles on the roads.

It’s possible in many parts of the city to rent a bike for a day or a few hours (some hotels even supply them for free) but please be aware that in the summer the streets can become very congested with cyclists. It’s not advised for those who are not used to cycling to rent bikes in Amsterdam. Some tours may include a cycle tour of Amsterdam which can be another great way to see the city - check with your tour operator for more details.

Food & Drink in Amsterdam

The Netherlands may not have the best reputation for its food, but there are plenty of delights to try during your time here. From bar snacks ‘bitterballen’ to the delicious freshly made apple pie that you’ll find in many cafes, the Dutch believe in hearty food. Another typical winter dish is ‘stampot’ - which is sure to keep you warm and full.

Don’t miss the delicious Dutch Stroopwaffels (syrup cookies)! And of course, no visit to Amsterdam would be complete without sampling some Dutch Gouda. There are many cheese shops located throughout the city, or try a local supermarket for cheese and cookies to take home.

When it comes to drinking beer is the natural choice of beverage - you can visit local Amsterdam brewery Brouwerij T’Ij, located in a windmill in the east of the city for the full experience.
