What travelers are saying

"This tour has amazing sites, good hotels in great locations, great pace BUT the tour director that was assigned to be with our small group added nothing to the experience. He did not give us any info, tell us about what we were seeing, give us any info at all. The only time he talked was to tell us when the next bathroom break would be. Apparently this is common for Globus to use retirees starting another chapter. Our guide was 76 and had no energy. Travel with Gate 1 or Intreped.... guides can make or break a tour."

"The trip was well laid out. Tour guides were friendly and knowledgeable. The only complaint is some of our travel documents that were sent out were not in English. If your sending documents out correspondence should be in both the native language and the language of the people the correspondence to. Other than that a great first time experience."

What travelers are saying

"We have loved Gate 1 and always sing their praises. We've been on 7 tours with another one booked for fall. We were supposed to leave for Ecuador this week, however the country is in a 60 day state of emergency with the escape of 2 infamous gang members. Tourists are advised to stay indoors and there is a daily curfew from 11pm-5am. (our flight was to land at 11:15pm). Our trip included stays in 2 of the main cities of unrest. There have been shootings, car bombings, hostage taking, closing of embassies, and other countries issuing do not travel warnings. Other tour companies have cancelled tours or offered refunds or rescheduling. Travel insurance does not cover wars or civil unrest, but we are clearly afraid to go there. Both we and our travel agent have reached out multiple times with our concerns and asked if we could reschedule or get some sort of credit. We continue to get the same reply either in person or via email...Gate 1 has your safety as our highest priority and we feel you are safe ("they are not targeting tourists") and your itinerary should not be impacted. What? Their highest priority is $ and not our safety. There is no way that's the tour we anticipated. We cancelled the trip and took a 90% penalty, loss of deposit, and $276 airline penalty. It's a LOT of money, but we would have been terrified, and it's not worth getting hurt or worse. Sorry, but it's not the company I want to do business with in the future."

What travelers are saying

"Our family of four, including two adult children, took the Bicycling: Day Trips to Paradise in Canada. This trip is entirely outsourced to the owners of the inn, there are no Road Scholar employees involved in the trip. Two of us have taken bicycle trips all over the world and the bicycling component of this trip was disorganized, haphazard and almost unsafe. We all filled out forms giving details regarding our bicycle fitting months before the trip. On the first day, the leader Stephen, went around the room and asked the same questions and said everyone would get fitted in the morning before we began the first ride. The morning brought a rack of bikes, all different types in various levels of readiness. There were road bikes, hybrid bikes, mountain bikes and e-bikes. The rides were all on paved surfaces and the mountain bikes were heavy and the additional suspension added weight. The bike I received had rust on the chain and rear sprocket. When I asked about it, was told they were waiting for another van to show up with tools and equipment. Once it arrived, they gave me the lubricant to spray on the rust. My wife’s bike would not shift into the high gear on the front sprocket. Instead of adjusting the derailleur, they suggested spraying it with lubricant. Our one son is over six feet and needed a larger frame bike, even though he detailed it in the bike form months ago, there was no bike to fit him. One of the guides, then went home and brought a larger bike that was a full suspension mountain bike for him. The bike was very heavy, hard to control on the road and he felt unsafe. After two days, one of the guides convinced Stephen that they could adjust a hybrid bike to fit him. Clearly there was no work done to prepare the bikes for the trip. Many of the bikes needed adjusting and all needed lubricant to function easily. For every day, there was a tray of snacks placed out for us to take along the ride. None of the bikes had any baskets or attached bags, so if you didn’t bring a small day pack, there was no way to carry the snacks. For lunch on the rides, they brought exactly one sandwich for each rider. Since most of us get hungry while doing a day of exercise, it would have been helpful to have a few extras. On one day, they ran out of sandwiches and one of the leaders that were riding with us did not get lunch. Do NOT take this trip if you are expecting it to be a bicycling trip. We have used VBT and Discovery Bicycle Tours many times over the past 25 years and they are excellent bike tour companies. Lastly, after sharing these details with Road Scholar after the trip, their response was weak at best. After doing the full reviews and having to call them, their response was to give us $200 credit after spending $8000 on this trip. Not only was that insulting, they assumed that I would take another trip with their organization."

What travelers are saying

"I didn’t take this tour exactly, but made some changes based on my schedule and interests and travel dates. It was my first time in Southeast Asia and I was a traveling solo female. Liz my trip consultant and contact person was so helpful and responsive to any and all my concerns and questions. It was a trip of a lifetime. I can not gush enough about the itinerary and experiences. I am completely impressed with is company and this person. Ya ya in Chang Mai and Sam in Bangkok are top notch guides. The diving in Phuket was arranged with Siam diving, a small private boat not an over stuffed crowded one. It felt like we were the only people in the ocean. Goo, GO, GO!!!!"

Around the World Tour Selection Trips

  • European tour packages with airfare offer a seamless journey through Europe, and you can make the most of your vacation with these essential tips: Avoid exchanging currency at the airport since you'll likely get better rates in the city.
  • While credit/debit cards are widely accepted, carry some cash for smaller establishments that may not accept cards.
  • International roaming may be a better option than purchasing a universal SIM card.
  • Learn basic phrases in the local languages of the countries on your itinerary to connect with locals.
  • Save money and discover unique souvenirs by exploring local markets instead of upscale stores.
  • Experience authentic cuisine at local bistros and roadside cafes, which usually offer reasonably priced delicious meals.
  • Take walking tours to explore cities and learn about their hidden gems. Many cities offer free walking tours led by knowledgeable guides.
  • If there are specific attractions you wish to visit, book tickets online in advance to avoid long queues and save time.

Additional details

When considering an around the world tour, determine the regions that are most important to you, and the maximum length of time you’d like to spend traveling.

Packaged tours around the world can be anywhere from 4 weeks to 3 months, covering many different themes and regions.

Options for Tours Around the World

There are many options for traveling around the world, but perhaps the most popular is to travel via cruise.

Cruises pose a number of advantages, especially only unpacking once. And you’ll also enjoy personal service, numerous excursions to choose from, meals on board, getting to know your shipmates and making new friends over the course of your journey.

If you get seasick, it might be best to plan a longer cruise, to give yourself enough time to get used to the movement and actually enjoy your trip. The crew on board will be able to help with many remedies. Munching on some crystallized ginger is a wonderful natural solution that has proven very successful.

Overland tours are another popular multi-country travel type, though they aren’t for everyone. This mode of travel is generally most enjoyed by young budget travelers. Overland tours are community focused, meaning that everyone - travelers, guides, drivers alike - pitches in to assist with meals, set-up and break-down of camps, and anywhere else needed.

Travel is mainly in value to premium level coaches, and you’ll be roughing it. Exhilarating for some...extremely uncomfortable for others.

Packing for Your Around the World Tour

Packing for any extended vacation is never easy, let alone a multi-month trip. When traveling around the world, one important factor to keep in mind is the weather. Since you may very well be crossing the equator, the weather will shift from Summer to Winter or Spring to Fall so be prepared!

Bringing lightweight layers and a solid rain jacket - also useful for excursions across the water - is going to be key.

Footwear should be limited to no more than 3 pairs. Bring a good pair of hiking boots or tennis shoes as you’ll probably be walking a lot, over many different surfaces. A pair of beach shoes or sandals will also be essential.

Also consider the many different cultures you’ll be encountering. For exploring Muslim countries, make sure you have some conservative clothing items to wear, and a head covering. Women especially should take care to dress modestly.

When touring many religious establishments as well, make sure shoulders are covered and pants or skirts are below the knee.

If you are traveling on a round the world cruise, this can be a great way to avoid having to unpack and repack constantly. It will also mean you can bring heavier items, perhaps more camera gear or an extra jacket or two.
