What travelers are saying

"We spent two wonderful weeks touring several of the best destinations in Portugal & Spain with a group of 16 people. Our guide (Fredy) was from Spain and intimately familiar with the region, including its rich history, attractions, and food/beverages. The tour was well-paced using a combinations of private vehicles (small buses and cabs), trains, and an airplane ride as well as a fair amount of walking to get around these two beautiful countries. We extended our stay in Lisbon to see more attractions and took a side trip to Fatima, Obidos, and Nazare that was also excellent. Would have liked to have a bit more time in a couple of the cities, but we'll just have to plan another trip!"

"BUYER BEWARE!!! This company has a policy that if THEY cancel your trip…THEY get to keep your money and you get a credit the company. They cancelled my first trip..found out the hard way about their policy. Booked a trip…then had left over money so booked another…which they cancelled…again. Surprisingly…this time they offered a refund, but only gave me back the money I had put down…not what was left of “my credit”. So now I am forced to do business with a company I no longer wish to, that picks and chooses when to follow their own policy!! There are plenty of other travel agencies with similar tours…don’t give these guys your hard earned money for them to keep."

What travelers are saying

"We have loved Gate 1 and always sing their praises. We've been on 7 tours with another one booked for fall. We were supposed to leave for Ecuador this week, however the country is in a 60 day state of emergency with the escape of 2 infamous gang members. Tourists are advised to stay indoors and there is a daily curfew from 11pm-5am. (our flight was to land at 11:15pm). Our trip included stays in 2 of the main cities of unrest. There have been shootings, car bombings, hostage taking, closing of embassies, and other countries issuing do not travel warnings. Other tour companies have cancelled tours or offered refunds or rescheduling. Travel insurance does not cover wars or civil unrest, but we are clearly afraid to go there. Both we and our travel agent have reached out multiple times with our concerns and asked if we could reschedule or get some sort of credit. We continue to get the same reply either in person or via email...Gate 1 has your safety as our highest priority and we feel you are safe ("they are not targeting tourists") and your itinerary should not be impacted. What? Their highest priority is $ and not our safety. There is no way that's the tour we anticipated. We cancelled the trip and took a 90% penalty, loss of deposit, and $276 airline penalty. It's a LOT of money, but we would have been terrified, and it's not worth getting hurt or worse. Sorry, but it's not the company I want to do business with in the future."

Assisi Tour Selection Trips

  • Rural Italy, like many other places in Mediterranean Europe, does not rely on air conditioning. Many travelers and Italians alike find it easier to just open a window, but if you’re especially sensitive to the heat, be aware of this, and consider booking higher-end accommodation that might have A/C.
  • Of all of the many churches in Assisi, a few require you to dress conservatively. This means covering your shoulders, and in some places, covering your legs to the knee. These guidelines are not too strict, but it is better to be prepared and respectful regardless!
  • Homosexuality is legal and accepted in most of Italy, though outward displays of affection between gay or lesbian couples may be met with negative reactions, especially in more rural and religious towns -- Assisi is both. While it is unlikely anything will happen, it is best to be aware of this.
  • If you have any free time, consider taking a quick day trip to the nearby town of Chiusu which has a very interesting Etruscan Museum.

Additional details

Weather in Assisi

Assisi is in Umbria, which is a region in central Italy and sometimes referred to as the “Heart of Italy.” In this region, temperature varies drastically depending on the season, with warm and humid summers, and cooler winters.

If you are looking to avoid rain, the driest months of the year are in July, August, and October. Even if it rains, be aware that it never snows in Assisi, even in the winter.

Here is what to generally expect when visiting Assisi, depending on the season:

  • Summer: In summer, daily temperatures average around 80 degrees Fahrenheit, though be aware that temperatures can rise to the high 90’s in the heart of July.
  • Fall: During the autumn, temperatures are a little cooler, and generally in the mid 60’s (Fahrenheit).
  • Winter: Winter temperatures in Assisi are the most consistent, and typically fall at around 40 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Spring: The spring in Assisi is typically a little colder than the fall, with temperatures averaging in the mid 50’s.

Because Assisi's weather is never extreme, and because this tiny country city does not experience the massive influx of tourists that other Italian cities like Rome and Florence do during the summer, there is no guaranteed best time to visit Assisi.

Some travelers enjoy the winter and Christmas season in this joyous and religious town, though others travelers time their trips to Assisi with other holidays and festivals throughout the year for the same reason. If you want to save money, however, consider booking during the off-season for travel and during the spring and autumn months.

How far is Assisi from Rome?

Assisi is just over a two hour drive from Rome, which makes this city popular on larger tours of Italy. If you are planning on booking separate tours in each city, there is also a convenient train that runs between the two -- this train takes about 3 hours, but is very affordable only costs 10 euros in each direction.

Assisi Wine Tours

The Umbria region of Italy is famous for its wine, particularly its love of the white Grechetto grape. Assisi is no exception to either of these trends, and there are multiple food and wine tours of Italy that include Assisi as a pit stop.

Besides its heavy use of Grechetto grapes, Assisi is also known for a wide diversity of red wines. Like other regions in Italy, there are also stringent production rules in the area that govern how wine is made, from the altitude it has to be grown at to the percentages of each type of grape that can be in the wines.

On a wine tour of Assisi, you will all of this information in more detail, as well as more about Assisi’s historic relationship with wine as a religious and devoutly Catholic city. You will likely also be able to visit a few different vineyards in the region to watch how they make wine. Finally, you will of course have the opportunity to sample various different wines from the area, and learn what to look for when tasting them.
