extraordinary experience

I finished my 22 day tour from Darwin to Perth on the 1st September and I am still re-living every element of this extraordinary experience each day. I want to do it all over again straight away. Dan, our driver, guide and chef was an absolute gem. His energy and enthusiasm was infectious and he gave everyone the confidence to take on the challenging hikes we did throughout the breathtaking gorges and canyons of the Kimberley and Karijini. His support on these hikes was heart warming as it made it possible to do everything on offer.Swimming in the waterholes and showering in waterfalls was an absolute highlight. Dan ensured we made the most of every day doing more than was on the itinerary. Our meals were terrific - healthy, tasty and enjoyed by everyone in our group. I was amazed at the effort Dan made to provide for all of the special dietary needs of passengers. He treated everyone with kindness and patience at all times. This was only my second group tour ever and the first in Australia. I would highly recommend this tour as it is so much easier to sit back and enjoy the journey as well as the spectacular destinations. Not driving, meant I went to places I wouldn't have gone if I was in my own vehicle. The wonderful commentary and story telling adds to the experience. As an older passenger I wasn't interested in being on a tour with only retirees and older people. The mixed age group was an important element of its great success for me. I noticed that other tours, that are much more expensive, went to the same car parks and camping grounds but the passengers were not going as far into the gorges as we did. Often they were just going to lookouts and viewing from above. They may not have slept in swag's some nights but that was their loss too. Nothing like staring into the brilliant night sky. This tour was great value for money. If you're thinking about it just do it - I am sure you will love it.

It was an amazing tour

Just got back from a tour in the Top End with the legendary Scotty ! Besides being highly knowledgable and passionate about the places we visited, this guy went above and beyond to accomodate everyone's needs. Including mine as a Kosher observant. I'm really speechless. It was an amazing tour, seeing all the good spots the top end has to offer ! Thank you, thank you, will definitely recommend to a friend.

fantastic!

Just got back off the 3 day Rock to Rock tour and the worst bit about this tour is that it ended. I had the best timem my tour leader, B, was fantastic! She was so enthusiastic and happy about everything. Always smiling even at 4.45am. She got us pumped up about every activity and was a wealth of knowledge! I took this trip as it was my nans dream and sadly she passed. I brought a photo of nan with me to get a photo of her and me at Uluru. I explained this to B and not only did she take a photo but she went above and beyond to make it special with different photo ideas, toasting nan and even pouring her her own drink! She spoke to and about nan as if she were. This trip was truly magical. Everything i could have hoped for and more. Betina is a true asset to your company and i have no doubt that this trip would not have been as good if it wasnt for her!

Perth to Broome Overland Trip Type: Small Group Tour
In the early 90s Adventure Tours Australia was conceived, as a way to help new travelers to Australia visit the farther reaching attractions of the country, such as Uluru. What Makes Them Stand Out? Culturally rich, adventurous tours and local expertise. They strive to show travelers “the real Australia”. They specialize in wildlife and indigenous culture tours. Their guides have a collective two decades of experience traveling around the the vast country, and it’s many different often harsh environments. Their tours are eco conscious, and almost all have an element of camping involved. Who Travels With Them? Their trips tend to skew younger, especially given the two types of accommodation range from Camping to Basic. They often host families and single or solo travelers. No single supplement is required for those solo travelers open to rooming with someone of the same gender - if you prefer a room to yourself, they can often offer this for a supplement. Where Do They Operate? Their tours operate throughout Australia, including Tasmania. They have multiple kinds of tour, including short breaks, overland, and city explorations. How Does it Work? Trips fall under two main categories: “Basix” and “Original”. Each is fairly rustic in nature. Transportation is via 4WD or minibus. All trips are conducted in as eco conscious a manner as possible. Why Travel With Them? They are perfect for young adventurous travelers interested in seeing Australia from a local point of view. If you enjoy camping, getting to know other travelers, and feeling completely immersed in your location, they are the tour company for you.

This was the first time we had taken a group road tour and I would have to say that it exceeded my expectations. Our guide Danilo was great, it is a difficult job managing people on this type of trip. Everything from the excursion to the dinners where completely organized and well done. We look forward to another trip with Trafalgar in the future. I would without a doubt definitely recommend this trip, it is a little fast pace but Danilo, made sure that we had options if there were needed.

Best of China 2019

The tour guide Hubert was wonderful, very detailed oriented and organized. And had such an extensive knowledge of all the cities and locations we went to. Truly excellent! Personalized care and helpfulness was definitely offered throughout, very nice touch to the trip. Overall a great trip, but some considerations below: The hotel in Beijing – Novotel Peace and the hotel in Chengdu – Crowne Plaza were way below standard – maybe a rating of 2 stars. They were dirty, dark, stained and hot without air circulating in the rooms. After extensive days with waking up early and returning late, you just want to rest in a clean environment with cool air. I would never stay hotels like these. This trip is not for people who cannot handle extensive walking and climbing. Trafalgar lists this as from 5 to 99 years old. Not possible. There were days we did 10 miles of walking, just a caution for anyone considering. We had someone in our tour that was 82 years old and we all took turns taking care of him. Some aspects of the itinerary could be different, but think that is all based on personal preference; however my fellow travelers did feel the same way. The cruise down the Yangtze River was just ‘ok’, time could have been spent better elsewhere. Like Xian, truly amazing city but too short a time. NOTE: Some were charged single supplement, others were not ... I paid for the single supplement and was none too happy about that! Also note that you need to budget for the optional tours that are not included.

Trafalgar is a name many seasoned travelers will recognize. A branch of the Travel Corporation, whose brands all enjoy stellar reputations, Trafalgar has been offering classic and affordable journeys for over 70 years. What Makes Trafalgar Stand Out? Budget friendly without cutting activities Comfortable, not physically demanding tours Largely focused on cultural immersion  Strong reputation    Trafalgar is a budget friendly group tour operator with premium tastes. Their motto is “See the world from the inside,” - this is the place to come for culturally rich and immersive travel experiences that don’t break the bank or the back. Tours are comfortable, not too physically demanding, and offer the opportunity to meet, talk, eat and drink with locals. You’ll get to know chefs, artisans, craftsmen, historians, and farmers as you explore what makes each destination truly special. Trafalgar has a strong reputation, having been around since 1947 - putting them right at the pinnacle of when many premier guided tour companies were established. You’ll meet groups of like minded travelers, enjoy cultural experiences, expertly crafted itineraries with local touches and experiences guides, while traveling in comfort and ease. Who Will Enjoy Traveling With Trafalgar? Older travelers (but all ages are welcome) Low to mid range budget travelers Those who enjoy slow-paced itineraries and little physical activity Those who favor historic sightseeing & cultural immersion over active adventure    If you are an active traveler, perhaps recently retired, eager to explore the world in comfort, visiting a nice combination of unique local spots and classic sites, then Trafalgar could be a great choice. Possibly you are new to group tours and packages, having been used to creating your own travel experiences at a younger age - Trafalgar provides the perfect introduction to group tours. Or maybe you’re traveling with a family and interested in introducing a new generation of travelers to your favorite country - but don’t really have the time or patience to worry about planning out all the logistics. While they offer many trip styles, suitable for travelers of all ages, their classic touch is popular among older travelers. Classic doesn’t mean old fashioned or tired - simply a bit less on the active adventure and more on the historic sights and cultural experiences. They have a number of family focused tours, as well as tailored trips for special interests. Trafalgar trips are budget friendly, with most trips in middle to low range, including a “Cost Saver” feature that allows you to see more inexpensive trips broken down by ratings and cost clearly. They offer several deals throughout the year. Trafalgar is a British brand, so many of the attendees on your tour will be from the UK.   Top Destinations With Trafalgar, you can find trips to Europe, USA & Canada, South America, Asia, Australia & New Zealand. While the destinations are widespread, Trafalgar trips explore the culture and guides take you to hidden local spots without venturing too far outside the comfort zone. Tours in Europe and the UK are among the most popular itineraries. In South America, Trafalgar travels to Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Ecuador and Peru. In Africa, they go to Egypt, Morocco, and South Africa. In Asia, it’s Cambodia, China, Japan, Thailand, and Vietnam. And in the Pacific, Trafalgar visits Australia and New Zealand. Wherever you go, you can expect high quality guides and accommodations, and smooth travels. They also have a number of religious themed tours, including trips that include excursions to Oberammergau, Bavaria. Once a decade this small town presents a Passion Play, and Trafalgar has had special access since 1970. The next time to experience this unique event is 2020. Trafalgar Travel Style The Trafalgar travel style is all about getting to know the culture through activities and connecting with locals. Their main tagline is “Discover the Good Life” meaning getting to experience the real thing, in a safe, escorted environment with knowledgeable guides there to help with the language and provide historical and cultural context. Discovering the Good Life encompasses perks like skipping lines and private access to classic sites; and unique experiences that bring you to places and among people you’d never have the chance to meet traveling on your own. This kind of travel is local immersion, but not in the same way a 25 year old might interpret that idea. Rather than bunking at hostels, going out late at night, and enjoying potentially questionable street food, you’ll stay in premium, centrally located and culturally significant accommodations - everything from bed and breakfasts in Ireland to hotels right on the banks of Norwegian fjords.  Learn cooking techniques in Italy, enjoy private winery tours at French chateaus, and touring a small olive farm in Spain are just a few examples of the kind of unique travel experiences you can expect with Trafalgar. Groups are large, typically between 40-45 travelers, a max of 52 on trips in the USA and Canada. Primary transportation during the tour is in large coaches, equipped with WiFi (with the exception of Alaska) and featuring large viewing windows - ideal for taking in the scenery as you head to your next destinations.   Most meals during Trafalgar tours are included. Trips often include free time during which you can explore on your own, with suggestions from your expert guides. Why Choose a Tour with Trafalgar? Trafalgar has a solid reputation, and they stick to what they’ve done well for over 50 years. They focus on the classics, providing a culturally rich perspective as you meet locals along the way. Their experience has allowed them to cultivate relationships around the world with local businesses - quality control you can trust for every stop along the trip. Niche tours based on specialized interests are also something they are proud to offer. Trafalgar is where you go to have the essentials and logistics take care of seamlessly while you sit back and enjoy. Do note that these tours can be quite large - 40 people traveling together in a tour group can be stifling for some. While they appeal to an older crowd due to their history and recognizable name, Trafalgar has an impressively well integrated social media presence. Trips on their site are accompanied by instagram posts from real travelers who have been on the same tour, using the hashtag #SimplyTrafalgar. Old or young(ish), couple or single, traveling Simply Trafalgar inspires confidence, comfort, and enjoyment.

Fantastic organisation, got to see the world with no stress and with awe

Sophie was amazing and did her best to give my group all the information she had and made sure everyone had options and ideas of what was happening throughout the whole trip. Making sure everyone felt included and safe. Would definitely recommend this trip for travellers who want a slow pace trip but still with all the contiki fun.

A heartless tour company!!

Let me start by saying that I did not even get the chance to go on this trip. A week prior to my trip to Spain, an immediate family member of mine become ill with imminent death. I was unable under the circumstances to travel and wanted to cancel my trip and was willing to reschedule for a later date or get a credit. This was a very expensive trip for both my sister and I, taking us years to save up for it. The response we received from our agent is that Contiki is not willing to postpone the travel, even after we were willing to pay an extra fee. This tells me that this company is GREEDY and HEARTLESS. My family member has since passed away, 3 days before my departure date which was supposed to be on July 2nd. I even went to check the Contiki website and was shocked to see that my trip which was previously full, has now opened up spots to fill our place. Now, not only are they keeping the money of 2 young hardworking people, but also making money off filling our spots!! I've never experienced such injustice and mistreatment from a company in my entire life! This company has no sympathy and ZERO understanding for a situation as devastating as death. My sister and I were so excited to go on this trip and were very upset by the timing of our situation... but how can you control when a loved one will pass??????? SHAME ON YOU CONTIKI. If nothing is done to resolve this unfair policy, I will make sure not to recommend your tours to anyone.

Extremely knowledgeable

Amazing staff who are very friendly and also extremely knowledgeable. My trip was amazing and I enjoyed every minute of it. I did the Spirit of Europe last year and couldn’t recommend Topdeck enough.
5.0 • Sally

Overall amazing value. Food, particularly by Topdeck staff, excellent. Spontaneous/flexible; be prepared to pay for lots of extra excursions, on and off your itinerary, in cash.

Food was excellent. Accomodations were better than expected: hostels, but usually with in-suite bathrooms and always only with other members of your tour of the same gender. Don't try to overplan; trip is quite spontaneous and flexible and you won't know much about the schedule/optionals for each city more than a day or so in advance. Optionals will be plentiful and paid in cash. Only do those that are right for you, even if your trip leader really encourages them and most other people are going. These trips are great for solo travelers, but make sure you find people interested in the same things as you...it will probably be easy to find groups to go to bars and clubs with in the evenings, but harder to find people who prefer other evening plans. Driver was excellent and bus was very comfortable and clean, but be prepared to spend a lot of time on it as there is no driving at night. Trip leader extremely knowledgeable, experienced, and helpful. Overall, excellent value and a trip with plenty of time to see the bucket list highlights in each city.

Fast-Paced Tour of Western Europe that highlighted most Bucket List Sights. Awesome Company. Great Food and Tour Leader

I jumped on this tour with very little notice and planning, and I was thoroughly impressed. Our Topdeck trip leader was very knowledgeable, fun, and adjusted the trip to the group (34 people). The meals provided were delicious, and they worked hard to cater to dietary needs. Accommodations were good, typically with 2-6 people in a hostel room. Keep in mind they are hostels, not hotels (bring your own towel). I loved the itinerary, as it highlighted the must-see places and had variety (ex. Paris, Rome vs. Switzerland). The optionals in each city were all wonderful. However, many were not presented in the Topdeck literature online and were not introduced on the trip more than a day in advance. All are paid for in cash (Euros). Because of how the optionals were presented, it was a bit harder to budget. I would recommend inquiring more about the optionals when booking and at the beginning of your tour via your trip leader. Don't feel pressured to do all of them and remember to keep your own interests in mind. The solo travelers easily found others with similar interests to explore with. For many on this trip, drinking and going out to bars/clubs was a major component (as alcohol is often cheaper than water). Because of the shortness of this tour along with all the destinations, prepare for lots of driving and to make the most of the time you have in each city. This trip provided am amazing sampling of Western Europe and opened my eyes to cultures and history I was unfamiliar with. Overall, I would highly recommend this itinerary and touring company, as it provided a good balance between budget and experiences. P.S. Stay flexible with plans, but some of the popular sights need more pre-planning than expected, like the Eiffel Tower and the Anne Frank House (Amsterdam).

Founded in 1973, Topdeck has been providing fun, adventurous trips around the world for 18-39 for over 40 years. What Makes Topdeck Travel Stand Out? Topdeck tour focuses on providing friendly and authentic guided group tours where like-minded 18-39 year old travelers can have amazing group experiences. There are several trip types to choose from, from camping, to immersive, to multi destination, to sailing. Who Will Enjoy Traveling with Topdeck? Sociable, adventurous, budget conscious 18-39 year olds are the kinds of traveler who will gravitate to Topdeck. Though they offer a few different distinct travel styles, there is definitely a sense of an ongoing party, with travel as the conduit and underlying shared interest. If the idea of being around a group of similarly aged people - many of whom may be exploring internationally for the first or second time - being spontaneous, and meeting locals (often in the environment of bars or clubs) is unappealing, then Topdeck may not be your cup of tea. Introverted travelers, or those for whom an extensively planned itinerary including many museums and historical sites is ideal, may want to hunt around before choosing a Topdeck tour. That is not to dissuade the more observational traveler - who may very well find a group they gel with perfectly on a Topdeck tour. Only to caution that you will be surrounded by several extroverted personalities. The bottom line is if you are game for anything, are traveling on a budget, and don’t mind fairly basic but comfortable accommodations and inexpensive meals - sometimes on the go - then you will enjoy the Topdeck tour experience. Top Destinations Topdeck has tours throughout the world, in Europe, Australia & New Zealand, North America, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. Topdeck Travel Style The Topdeck travel style is tied quite specifically to their audience. These tours are great for youthful and energetic 18-39 year olds looking for a good time and to make new friends. In the interest of keeping their tours affordable, travelers with Topdeck will need to make a few allowances. For example, hostels and hotels may be situated quite far away from the city centers. You can also expect some long travel days. The more of a good sense of humor and adventure you have, the more you’ll enjoy the experience. Why Choose a Tour With Topdeck Feeling the urge to connect with travelers in your age group, have fun, and make lasting friendships? Topdeck has over 40 years of experience in adventure travel, which has helped them create epic low cost trips for 18-30 somethings. These tours are certainly not for those who prefer to take things slow. You will be running around, moving between a lot of places - which in some cases means very long bus rides - going out a lot, meeting new people, and staying active throughout your tour. If your ideal travel experience is more methodical and planned out in nature, Topdeck may not be for you. But if you are an adventurous and social travelers eager to absorb a new culture and make new friends, then hop on board!

amazing experience!!

Me and my partner have done the open water course with Natalie and the advance with Lennert and it couldn’t have been better. Really good instructors and very nice people. In general all the crew is the best point of this company. Thank you for this amazing experience!!

Very disappointed by their poor customer service.

I have to admit my experience with Deep Sea Divers Den was not the best. Probably due to a cold, I couldn't equalize the pressure in my ears and thus couldn't go on the two dives I booked. The crew however assured me I will get the money refunded, as this is a medical condition and not my own fault (like I didn't go diving because I was scared). As soon as I was back I called the office, and they told me that my problem is not a medical condition and they can do nothing about it. So, on top of my disappointment of not having been able to go diving I am immensely disappointed by poor customer service!

Absolutely great day out.

Went out on the Reef Quest boat and absolutely loved it. Couldn't have asked for better food or patience from the dive instructors as these were my 1st and 2nd dives ever. Absolutely great day out.

Indus does NOT Disclose Key Aspects of Trip

Actually this is a review of A Taste of Portugal. Indus fails to fully answer questions prior to booking. It was not until we booked that we learned that the air travel "included in trip" was the Absolute Cheapest International Flight. We would need to pay $360 extra for luggage which is normally free for international flights. Also, that the cheapest flight WOULD NIOT PERMIT US TO UPGRADE THE INDUS FARE; choosing to upgrade would cost MORE than the full price advertised online. Un fortunately IT COST US $1000 to cancel this ripoff. Complaints to agent Rachel and Supervisor Tordes was fruitless. Had they answered the one question we asked "Can We Upgrade Flights?" we would not have booked. INDUS FAILED TO DISCLOSE TERMS; it cost us "suckers" $1,000. Richard Supinski

RUN!!!

Been a nightmare, and we haven't even left yet. And may not get to if Indus has it''s way. It's a long story, but I will try to keep it short. We booked our tour to Australia back in Nov/Dec 2018, paid the deposit, and then paid the remainder in Jan 2019. Indus sent me a receipt/invoice showing I owed ZERO now for the tour and that it was paid in full. Our tour is set to depart 4-16-19, and since Jan I have been thinking all is well and calling/emailing every so often to ask when our flights/travel docs will be issued. They kept telling me 45 days before the departure. Well guess what? Yesterday Tayna (my tour coordinator) contacts me and tells me that due to a "glitch" in THEIR computer they will not release my tour and travel documents unless I pay almost another $1700!!! And is it now about 3 WEEKS from departure, so I have very little recourse to do much. Seriously?!? I spent hours on email and calls trying to explain that they cannot just arbitrarily try to charge me more, especially since it was THEIR error. They just kept insisting that I had to pay the money or they would not issue my travel documents. I then found a policy, ON THEIR OWN WEBSITE, that says they will not change the price after a final payment is made (which I did back in Jan 2019). I have forwarded all my documents, and the policy from the website, and have asked for either a full refund or issuance of my trip/travel docs. Tanya assured me yesterday that a manager was looking into this, and that I would have an answer by this morning. The next day, I got a call back from Tanya: they are refusing to give a full refund or release the trip unless I pay because they claim they didn't change anything (despite the fact that they are not demanding double what I've already paid) and that the new demand for additional payment does not constitute a price change; despite the documents I have from them with a zero balance since Jan 2019. This looks an awful lot like fraud, extortion, and illegal seizure of funds. I just want my money back at this point because I've been dealing with this since 3-20-19; and I honestly no longer feel that this company would be a safe one to travel with/through. If they acting like this, and doing these very questionable things, before I even leave; what in the world would they try to pull when I am no longer Stateside?!?

Addendum To Previous Review "RUN!!!"

This is an addendum to my previous review: The manager, Tordes, spoke with the owner and reached out to me on 3-27; we have agreed upon a mutual resolution and Indus has agreed refunded me in full.

Canadian based Indus Travel offers budget friendly tours around the world for everyone from adventurous travelers to families. Their mission is to offer quality tours at affordable prices while providing outstanding service to their clients and to earn their loyalty & operate their travel business in an environmentally responsible, ethical and sustainable way. What Makes Indus Travel Stand Out? customizable itineraries use of travel planners and local experts to help design your trip balance between sightseeing and local immersion Their most popular tour offering is what they term “Unbundled Tours” where you book a group trip - meaning better price, but have the power to then customize your experience along the way. Not everyone may want to see xyz, so their itinerary structure allows everyone to tailor their travel experience. And it helps you choose those experiences, accommodations, meals etc that are within your price range. This does mean you’re dependent on the Indus guides on the ground handling a lot of complicated individual schedules effectively. Indus reviews indicate that this isn’t always a smooth ride, and often confusions arise both on the part of the traveler and the Indus organizers. Indus travel planners are available to help you design an ultra customized journey, using local experts. If you’re looking for something classic and cultural on a budget, they are a great choice. They strive to create balanced itineraries that include classic sightseeing as well as unique and authentic stops. Who Will Enjoy Traveling With Indus? Budget travelers Travelers looking for options and flexibility Ages 18-30 Budget travelers looking for an exciting group trip, but with the flexibility to “choose your own adventure”. Group sizes are kept small and they are popular with couples and small family groups. This style of group travel doesn’t always go smoothly however, so you’ll enjoy the experience more if you have an opened minded attitude and are ok with occasional changes on the ground. Indus crafts travel experiences with cost efficiency in mind, so if you’re expecting something more premium, Indus might not be for you. Top Destinations They organize trips around the world; top custom tour destinations include India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Turkey, Egypt, Jordan, Dubai, Peru. Excursions in destination depend largely on what you and your travel companions decide you want to see and do. Indus Travel Style The Indus travel style is about combining the best of independent travel with packaged travel. They will help arrange flights and accommodations, and your input creates a curated experience for your meals and activities. Hotels are usually in the 3 star range. They use a combination of public transportation such as ferries, trains, and buses, as well as their own coaches. These are comfortable, but usually with few upscale amenities. The max number of people on their tours is 22 according to the website, however be forewarned that several reviews state they had over 30 people on their tour. If group size is a very important factor for you when selecting a tour, you might want to consider looking around before deciding on Indus. Why Choose a Tour With Indus? If you are a budget traveler interested in a cost cutting travel solution, Indus is a great choice. Because they are specifically designed to be budget friendly, this does mean you might have to put up with some quirks along the way, so an easy-going attitude is good to have if choosing Indus. While their sales and customer service teams have some negative reviews, their guides on the ground are generally found to be knowledgeable and helpful.

DO NOT GO!!! Worst Tour Ever!

Poorly-chosen itinerary. Crappy hotels with no air-conditioning, broken fridges, clogged showers, and smoked-through "non-smoking" rooms. No meals, no transport: you want it, you have to pay for it. Treated like cattle in the "third-class" accommodations on the overnight train. What did we pay for???

This trip is amazing and well worth it. We chose the luxury option and could not have been more pleased.

This trip was a bucket list trip. We were thrilled with the amount of detail and planning that G Adventures put into this. It was amazing. there was a perfect mix of urban meets rural. The Safari's were spectacular. The wild life interaction was more than we bargained for. The lodges were very accommodating and the service beyond compare. Our CEO (guide) was very knowledgeable and in tune with everyone's needs. We chose to stay in Zambia a 3 days after the scheduled trip. Most of our souvenirs were found here. The night entertainment was great. We believe that group guided trips are not for every vacation. This one is definitely one to let G Adventures do the research and planning for you. Just go and relax there is a lot to enjoy.

Amazing and beyond expectation

The tour started in Bali and ended there. From day 1, it was full of adventures and wonderful vibes from everyone, all led by our knowledgeable guide Hans. He was at the center of everything and he knows the place and people everywhere which made all the visits and the daily tours fantastic. The places we visited were well chosen and the timing was paced to everyone's ability. We had to get up early for a sunrise trip to Kelimutu and this remained memorable to all of us. The Komodo Island trip with the Komodo dragoons was equally fantastic. We enjoyed the final parts of the tour with the beaches, among others the Pink Beach and the hotel on the beach in Labuan Bajo, Flores. Overall, the tour was wonderful. I would end with a special word to the guide Hans: Thank you Hans, and good luck. Dave

Specializing in small-group, multi-day adventure tours and expeditions, Toronto-based G Adventures has been a pioneer in the field since 1990. Founded by entrepreneur Bruce Poon Tip after a backpacking trip to Asia, the company fosters sustainable and environmentally sound tourism practices -- giving back to the communities they visit -- and considers its business “changig people’s lives,” not just offering a vacation. It’s since grown to become the world’s largest independent adventure travel company, with more than 1,350 employees, many of them professionally trained guides. What Makes G Adventures Stand Out? Well-balanced, all encompassing, and adventurous trips Strong engagement with local cultures Emphasis on being a responsible traveler and giving back to the community Trips that are made to be life-changing   G Adventures strives to create unique experiences for its travelers that start even before the trip itself. The company provides trip inspiration through their Looptail blog and you can connect with fellow travelers via the ‘Departure Lounge’, which is part of G’s ‘Watering Hole’ travel forum. Once on your trip, you will meet your ‘CEO’ or ‘Chief Experience Officer’ who is “responsible for enriching your journey, offering local insight, and pursuing great experiences as they happen.” Most groups average around 12 travelers, with a maximum of 16 on most trips. G Adventures has made a concerted effort to expand their offering beyond youth focused adventures, though this remains a core theme. Your Danube River Cruise will be imbued with the same culturally immersive and adventurous touch as your trekking journey through the Himalayas. Who Will Enjoy Traveling With G Adventures? Adventurous-minded and culturally curious people Moderately active people Ages 18-39 (but all ages are welcome) Solo travelers (no charge for single supplement!) Those who favor authentic experiences over luxury   If you are the kind of traveler who packs running shoes before dress shoes, hiking attire before dinner attire, and a sense of adventure before playing it safe, then G Adventures is the perfect fit for you. You love engaging with locals, meeting new people, and being spontaneous.  Most G Adventures tours have an active focus - expect to be on the move, packing a lot in. That said they do allot generous free time to explore on your own. There’s a chance you may not see every major tourist attraction in the interest of a more “real” experience. But the nice thing is if a particular site is not on the itinerary, you can use your free time to visit. If you are interested in a tour that plans every part of the itinerary down to the minute, G Adventures will probably not be the best fit for you.  Groups are geographically diverse, with a higher proportion of North Americans than some other operators.  Top Destinations    You can find G Adventures trips in most parts of the globe, including 32 countries in Europe, 25 countries in sub-Saharan Africa, 21 countries in Asia, 10 countries in South America, 12 countries in Central America and the Caribbean, five countries in North Africa and the Mideast, plus the U.S., and Canada. A number of destinations are well off the beaten track, from Sao Tome and Principe in West Africa to Borneo in east Asia to the Maldives in the Indian Ocean and both polar regions. Itineraries often focus on more off the beaten path locations; small towns, remote and rural villages, less touristy districts and sites. G Adventures Travel Style Pricing is competitive (cheaper), largely by using “grassroots” approaches: local transport and a mix of privately-owned accommodations, perhaps including homestays and camping. Efforts are made to focus on authenticity with both culinary choices (locally-owned restaurants) as well as transportation methods. G Adventures truly offers something for everyone. Trip styles include Classic, Active, Rail, YOLO (You Only Live Once - for 18-39’s), National Geographic Journeys, Marine, Family, Local Living, and Private Groups. Classic - Classic trips with G Adventures are designed for independent minded travelers who don’t want to miss anything. This is the perfect choice if you want a balanced mix of classic tourist sights and local cultural experiences. Active - Throwing it back to one of the things G Adventures does best. Kayak, walk, hike, trek; experience your destination through the outdoors. These multi-sport trips are great if you hate standing still and enjoy being out in nature. G Adventures Active tours are ideal for those who are relatively physically fit and like a challenge. Rail - A rail journey is a great way to dial it back. Take it slow and really savor the feeling of the journey. Take iconic routes and enjoy the ride. YOLO - “You only live once” is the acronym, and while G Adventures provides adventurous experiences for all, these trips are specifically designed for 18-39 year olds. Get cheeky, get wild, experience life unfettered, as you explore the culture and the local nightlife. If you have the stamina, these trips are once in a lifetime. Kind of like the age range. National Geographic Journeys - A more premium travel experience, these G Adventures trips, as part of a partnership with National Geographic Expeditions, involve the same culturally immersive approach and knowledgeable guides with an elevated level of accommodations and service. Marine - Love to be out on the water? Let G Adventures cruises take you to the far reaches of the globe via river and ocean. Experience incredible sights above and below the surface. Unpack once and enjoy the escape of being a part of the crew and passengers. Family - Adventure tours aren’t always especially friendly to younger travelers. G Adventures Family Friendly tours make adventure activities accessible for you and your youngsters! Trips often have an educational element, and are designed with multiple ages in mind. Local Living - Get to the heart of it with a homestay. These tours are designed to make you really feel at home and appreciate the feel and rhythm of living like a local. Private Groups - If you and your family, or a group of friends want the fun all to yourself, G Adventures can plan a private group trip just for you. Note: part of the culturally immersive experience when traveling with G Adventures is the use of public transportation. This means carrying your own luggage on buses, trains, etc - sometimes during commute hours! So pack light for your own comfort and the comfort of those around you. Why Choose a Tour With G Adventures? For those travelers seeking an exciting, professionally guided, and culturally immersive travel experience G Adventures is the perfect tour company to consider. Their trips are designed to be as authentic as possible - and they place much emphasis on giving back to local communities - so you’ll know your tourism dollars are going toward meaningful causes. Trips with G Adventures are not luxury by any means. But if unique experiences and active days appeal to you over a fluffy pillow then you’re in the right place. Departures are guaranteed once you’ve paid (barring significant weather or safety issues). And they don’t charge single supplements. In short, G Adventures wants you out there with them. You can find something for everyone at G Adventures; whether that’s sailing down the Danube with a glass of wine in hand, or traipsing through the rainforests of Costa Rica. FAQ 1. What kind of luggage should I bring? On many G Adventures trips it’s important to keep in mind that local public transportation is used frequently. Sometimes during commute hours! For your comfort and the comfort of those around you, it’s a good idea to pack light. Some areas will be very crowded, so take pickpocket precautions. 2. Do I need travel insurance? Yes! Travel insurance is required for all travelers on G Adventures trips. If you don’t have your own insurance already, you can purchase a plan for the time you’ll be traveling when you book your G Adventures tour. This is an easy and budget friendly option. If you’re interested in browsing more plans, check out the top travel insurance options » 3. Is airfare included? Unfortunately no. While G Adventures does not include international airfare in their trip prices, they can help you book flights. 4. Is there a single supplement? No. G Adventures does not charge a single supplement for their tours. Single travelers are very welcome. You will share with a same-sex roommate during the tour. If you wish to have a single room, there is usually an option to pay an additional fee for your own room. 5. Is there an age cap? While G Adventures trips tend to appeal largely to younger adventure travelers, all ages are welcome on the majority of trips. The exceptions include on their 18-39 tours, which are specifically designed for only travelers within that range. On most other G Adventures trips, children under 18 must be accompanied by a guardian, and are open to kids 12 and up. Some family friendly trips are open to younger kids. 6. What size are the groups? G Adventures group tours are kept small and intimate. The max is 15, with the average hovering more around 10.

Fantastic Trip in Southern Africa

We did this trip, Explore Southern Africa, from Aug 9 - 26 this year and we thought it was probably our most memorable trip ever. The variety of wildlife (we saw the big 5 plus giraffes, zebras, cheetahs, hippos, hyenas, wildebeests, impalas, baboons, ...) and our proximity to them that we experienced was unparalleled. The scenery was like nothing we had ever experienced before (our first time anywhere in Africa). Although it was winter time there when we went and many areas were looking very dry it was an experience not to be missed. Additionally we were made to feel welcome everywhere that we went. The highlights of the trip for us would be the two days to the Okavango Delta, the optional game drive through Chobe National Park and day 13 with our guide tracking rhinos in Matabos and going to the African village. Our tour leader, cook and drivers were excellent as were our co-travellers. The meals that were prepared for us tasted great, were well balanced and no one ever left hungry. The 2 person tent accommodations weren't the most luxurious but they allowed one to stay right in the "middle of the action" with the animals in close proximity to our overnight homes. This being the case, we never felt unsafe in our tents at any point. The overlander vehicle didn't have air conditioning, as is standard, however if you made sure to open windows for air circulation during the drive the heat wasn't so bad. If one is prepared to put up with these few inconveniences and willing to help out with camp set up, vehicle clean up, and meal clean up afterwards (this is a participatory type of trip where certain tasks are required of the travellers) it is an experience not to be missed. It all makes one more appreciative of the luxuries that we have at home that many do not have in South Africa, Botswana and Zimbabwe.

Intrepid Travel is all about ‘real life experiences.’ Founded back in 1989 following an “intrepid” African adventure trip, Intrepid lives up to its name by offering up some pretty big adventures -- such as an 11-day hike through Papua New Guinea -- but is broad-based enough to also lead group trips to Hawaii, complete with sipping sunset Mai Tais on Waikiki Beach. Intrepid Travel - Quick Facts Founded in 1989 No Single Supplement (rare exceptions) Small Groups - max 16 on most trips Typical Age Range - 18 - 45 Travel Style - Cultural immersion, adventure, overland Accommodation Style - Camping, Hostels, 3 /4 star hotels Average Tour Price - $2,377 Top Regions - Asia, Africa, Europe, South America Other Brands: Peregrine, Geckos Commonly compared with G Adventures » What Makes Intrepid Travel Stand Out? Small group sizes Travelers from all walks of life Well-balanced itineraries (group and free time allotted) Guides are travel experts or friendly locals Above all else, Intrepid strives to get its travelers off the beaten path and under the surface of the local culture. To accomplish this, group sizes average just 10 travelers each, with a maximum of 16 on most trips. This allows for more use of local transportation and lodging, along with fostering cultural immersion. Intrepid also employs local English-speaking leaders who act more as a resource for local exploration than do typical ‘guides,’ shepherding groups from one place to another. Who Will Enjoy Traveling With Intrepid Travel? All ages (seniors included) Adventure seekers and culture enthusiasts Intrepid is one of the early pioneers of the “adventure”-style guided trip. Despite its informal beginnings and emphasis on younger, highly adventurous travelers, Intrepid has expanded to a global company with a broad range of trips to fit all ages. Intrepid divides its small-group trips into three separate styles of travel, all priced accordingly. “Basix,” for budget travelers, keep inclusions to a minimum and offer plenty of free time, “Original” journeys which offer more included activities and more hotels, while “Comfort” trips offer the highest level of included activities and standards of accommodation, as well as roomier vehicles. The kind of traveler who gravitates to Intrepid Travel is one who has a real sense of adventure - whether this means hard adventure, or simply going deeper off the beaten path. Interacting with locals is an important factor when you travel, as is gaining a unique cultural perspective. A sense of fun is also essential, whether it means going out at night with your tour mates or daring, ahem, encouraging each other to try strange new foods. Top Destinations Asia South America Africa Europe Originally focused on small group adventure tours to Asia, Intrepid has expanded rapidly over the years, while maintaining its classic, adventurous, and immersive style. Today Intrepid Travel offers more than 1,000 different experiences in over 100 countries, on all seven continents. Regions with the most trips include Asia, South America, Africa, and Europe. Intrepid Travel Style Intrepid enjoys using local, unique forms of transportation. You might find yourself traveling by felucca in Egypt, on a camel in Morocco, or in a tuk-tuk on the best Thailand tour of your life. Accommodations, which could range from guesthouses to home stays, are also locally owned, allowing a more authentic taste of the region while contributing to the local economy. There are a few broad travel styles to choose from when deciding on an Intrepid tour: 1. Basix - Budget travelers who don’t mind, and in fact prefer, simple accommodations - camping and homestays with basic amenities, and crave a lot of free time for exploring independently will love these tours. Public transportation is used exclusively so pack light! These trips often attract a younger crowd who love the idea of throwing a backpack on, keep plenty of room for the unexpected in their schedule, and allocate their travel funds towards spontaneous bus tickets and street food instead of museum tours and 5 star restaurants. 2. Original - These trips take the backpacker spirit of local immersion, incorporating all the benefits that come with going with a planned itinerary. This style is called “Original” because it’s the type of travel that put Intrepid on the map...pun intended. Accommodations are still simple and budget minded - often homestays are used to give you a true sense of place, personality, and culture. Mostly public transportation is used. 3. Comfort - Intrepid is known for the active adventure style of travel and these trips keep that mentality, with a few more creature comforts thrown into the mix. You can expect higher end, more discerning, accommodations that include a wider variety of included amenities, transportation is mostly private, though you can still expect to use some public transport, as is the Intrepid way. More meals are included in the trip price, and more group activities - which means a bit less free time to explore on your own. Why Choose a Tour With Intrepid Travel? Intrepid is a good choice if you don’t mind foregoing some creature comforts for a truly authentic, local experience. If you enjoy meeting locals when traveling, sampling new and exciting foods, and traveling in mixed-aged groups of 10-16 people, Intrepid could be a good fit for you. It’s important to note, sometimes “ample free time” can be a blessing and a curse. It sounds great on paper, but if you’re looking to maximize your dollar and your vacation time, be sure you understand the implications of having a lot of free time during your itinerary. For some travelers this is an absolute requirement, but for others it can be tough to branch off and explore independently - you also need to make sure you allocate enough travel money for independent meals. The tour leaders are great resources of information for how to spend your free time, but if you like having a full day scheduled from breakfast to dinner, Intrepid may not be the best company for you. Lastly, if sustainable and responsible travel is important to you, Intrepid has poured millions of dollars into local economies, and has a very strong emphasis on responsible travel. So you can feel good knowing that your money helps support some of the innkeepers, vendors, and communities that you’ll meet along the way.

Great sites, poorly managed

I grew up with National Geographic so when I signed up for a NG trip I was quite excited. I spent a lot of time on a crowded bus. Some of the accommodations were two star, peeling paint, smelly rooms, poorly catered. This was an expensive trip all my girl friend and we spent 17,000 dollars for the two of us. Some of the guides were actually wrong about what they were saying about the history of Sicily, and you did not have to be an expert to realize this. There were a number of representations that tour operators made that turned out to be less than accurate. The tour group one night was having dinner in Sorento, and I asked about the wine they were serving, that is the grape and vintage, the only explanation I got was "its red". In another circumstance, the tour operator lost guests at Pompeii, and then threatened to leave them. It was a mess. I could go on, but I would cross this trip off the list.

Aamazing experience

We just returned from an amazing experience exploring the Galapagos Islands then following up with another awesome week in Peru -- highlighted by touring the ruins of Machu Picchu. The naturalists, local guides and expedition leaders were outstanding! We'll be talking about this trip for years. This was our first experience with National Geographic Expeditions and loved it so much we've already made reservations for our next trip!

In 1999, National Geographic launched their own tour company component: National Geographic Expeditions. Since then they have expanded to offer trips on all 7 continents in over 60 destinations. Recently they partnered with G Adventures to provide even more variety to their devoted customers. What Makes National Geographic Expeditions Stand Out? With National Geographic, you can travel by small, expedition-style ships; classic train journeys; land tours; active adventures; photo tours; family-oriented trips; or private, independent expeditions based on your desires and budget. Wherever you go with National Geographic, which has been in the tour business for 15 years, you can expect doors to open: entry to research sites, archeological digs, private homes or special events. Many expeditions are accompanied by a National Geographic expert or expert team who share their knowledge and passion for a region and help make each experience enriching and unforgettable. Who Will Enjoy Traveling With National Geographic Expeditions? National Geographic is one of those special brands that has managed to successfully straddle the line between “your grandfather loves them” and “your eighteen year old sister loves them”. They cover a wide range of topics, themes, and travel styles, with the educational aspect always prevalent yet not overbearing. If you love feeling like an explorer and an adventurer when you travel, and love learning about the world from experts in a variety of fields, National Geographic is the perfect place for you. This is a company for those who want to dig deeper, like getting the inside story from multiple perspectives - historical, cultural, political, economic, scientific and more. These trips are great for families, and you can choose a private tour or a family friendly group, where hands on activities will widen your children’s worldview in innumerable special ways. National Geographic trips are also extremely popular with photographers - novice photographers will enjoy their photography-centric tours, while many dedicated hobbyists can be found on their other trip styles as well. If you’re the kind of traveler who sacrifices the space for a pair of shoes in your suitcase for another lens or photography accessory...you’ll be right at home on a trip with National Geographic Expeditions. In the same way that National Geographic magazine has always inspired and furthered conversation and discourse, so too do their trips. The spirit of learning about the world is intertwined in every itinerary, so if you consider yourself a lifelong student, you should definitely consider traveling with National Geographic Expeditions. Top Destinations National Geographic Expeditions go all around the world, and cover almost every travel style imaginable. One might think they have a favoring of the more “exotic” locations but an impressive number of United States and Europe tours are offered as well as farther reaching destinations. Regardless of where you travel, you will be sure to get off the beaten path and discover unique cultural landmarks, meet interesting people, and enjoy a sense of adventure. Small-ship expeditions, done in conjunction with Lindblad Expeditions, can take you to Antarctica, the Galapagos and points beyond. Classic train journeys include the Trans-Siberian and trains through India, Spain, and Switzerland. Active adventures might take you hiking in Bhutan or meeting Berbers in Morocco. Land tours could take you to Tanzania, Peru or the Grand Canyon. National Geographic Expeditions Travel Style The travel style with National Geographic Expeditions has an aura of old fashioned exploration with a modern twist. National Geographic Expeditions is a family friendly outfit, offering a wide range of prices and trip styles. Trips vary from mid range budget to higher. Physical level is usually light to moderate. By virtue of their longstanding presence in the world, National Geographic has a wide reaching global network to lean on for incredibly unique and authentic lodging options, knowledgeable guides, and VIP access to historical and archaeological sites. They have several broad travel styles you can choose from: Land Trips - National Geographic Land Trips are immersive explorations, often covering nature and wilderness points of interest such as national parks. They also dive into ancient cities and cultures, with trips exploring everything from monks in Burmese mountainside temples to the lives of nomadic Mongolian peoples. Most trips are around 11 days and physical level is between light and moderate, with some trips featuring moderately challenging hikes in various altitudes. River Cruises - a relatively new addition, Nat Geo now offers around 7 river cruises in Europe covering the Danube, Rhine, and Douro. Currently they also have 1 river cruise in Asia, along the Irrawaddy. These trips are typically between 7 - 11 days and feature wine tasting, history tours, and very light physical activity. Private Expeditions - If you and your family, significant other, or a few close friends are looking for a more intimate travel experience than a group of strangers, Private Expeditions are a great way to travel. These trips are customizable, and can be crafted to perfectly suit your interests and dates. Photography Trips - National Geographic has consistently featured award winning travel photography. They run regular contests for those inspired by the thousands of groundbreaking and historic photographs taken by journalists and travel photographers around the world. On National Geographic photography trips you can actually learn tricks of the trade from real-world photographers and improve your skills. Train Trips - Travel was revolutionized with the implementation of the railroad, allowing people to travel in what was then a rapid pace from destination to destination. Today this ideal has been flipped on its head, and train travel is a leisurely paced excursion allowing time to relax and appreciate the slower meandering through beautiful countrysides. National Geographic train trips cover the classics, such as the Trans-Siberian railway and the Rocky Mountain railroad. Accommodations are comfortable, around a premium level, with options to upgrade. Active Expeditions - For those who enjoy a bit more of an adrenaline pumping and active travel experience, National Geographic also has trips for you. These trips feature multiple active outings, such as kayaking, hiking, and caving. Expect to explore the outdoors covering unique natural phenomena and gaining insight into how and why the landscape has been shaped the way it has. These trips also feature cultural insights, just to a lesser extent. Family Expeditions - National Geographic is the perfect company to travel with when you have curious and adventurous youngsters eager to see the world. They will learn about other cultures, people, food, nature and wildlife from experts with “cool jobs” that might even inspire lifelong interests and perhaps influence a career. These trips are specifically designed to be hands on, allowing everyone to get involved and learn about how things work. Private Jet Trips - For a luxurious and more lengthy travel experience, nothing beats a Private Jet tour. A dedicated team will be with you, and you’ll experience all the best that National Geographic has to offer from local guides to premiere accommodation. These trips are in a very high budget range, but if it’s in your wheelhouse - it’s a superb way to travel and cover a lot of ground. Journeys - Part of a partnership with G Adventures, these trips are adventurous and immersive small group excursions imbued with the spirit of National Geographic. The best of two top travel worlds! Why Choose a Tour  With National Geographic Expeditions? When you travel with National Geographic you are participating in and contributing to a spectacular legacy. Over the years National Geographic has cultivated a reputation for being about cultural exploration, scientific advancement, and broadening perspectives. Their travel experiences are perfect for anyone wishing to get back to the roots of what adventurous, experiential travel really means and enjoy discovering the world from multiple angles. Really one of the best parts about traveling on a tour with National Geographic Expeditions is the sheer breadth of knowledge, personal and professional experience their guides bring to the table. They help provide richly detailed context, historical information, and dive into the details of local life, by showing and doing as well as explaining. You the traveler will have the true experience of getting to know a place from the inside out. If that wasn’t enough of a reason, proceeds from your trip price go towards supporting National Geographic’s ongoing nonprofit work in conservation, exploration, education, and cultural preservation.

Beauiful Croatia

This was our first Bus Tour. While we did enjopy the spots we visited, we felt that there were too many towns and not enough time in each, necessitating more time on the bus. Nevertheless the value of the tour is undeniable. The Tour director Jon, was extremely professional and he was a huge positive on the trip. The topography of Croatia was spectacular, the Sea and mountain views were gorgeous. Lake Bled, the Postojna Caves, Opatija/Plitvice Lakes, Debrovnik, the Roman Ruins, Zagreb were wonderful. The hotels were all clean and rooms were comfortable. Unfortunately my partner Barbara fell and injured her face and broke her glasses on the way to Debrovnik. Jon was extremely concerned offered to find a doctor ()which Barbara declined) but Jon took the broken glasses to an occulist who temporarliy repaired the frames. Two of our fellow travelors who were Nurses took care of Barbara after the accident.

Wonderful experience, well-deigned by SmarTours

The Treasures of Portugal trip focuses on the highlights of the cultural and artistic heritage of this fascinating country. The chosen destinations and sites rarely disappointed, and there was always something awe-inspiring at each stop. The tour provides a great balance between programmed and free time, allowing you to see what you want or find time to explore on your own. The fact that few dinners and no lunches were provided afford you the opportunity to discover the places and tastes that intrigue you as you discover the variety of offerings available in each location. The destinations chosen are smart and live up to the promise that these are the country's treasures. Our guide was brilliant - she knew well the backstory of the locations and the significance of the art and architecture. Each part of the tour was a lesson in history, presented with excitement and passion. Her adoration of the history and culture of her countrymen was palpable and infectious, and gave the touring experience much added value. Well planned, organized, balanced, affordable, and utterly enjoyable. Very highly recommended.

Exceeded my Expectations!

For someone who usually plans every detail of my travels...going on a group tour was not something I relished. Plus, I knew that Smartours was considered a “budget” travel company, so my expectations weren’t that high. However, other than a few minor inconveniences, this trip exceeded my expectations. The magical African landscapes and its kind, welcoming people made this adventure one of the best vacations I’ve been on. Pros: Well-paced itinerary that gave us the opportunity for some free time to plan our own activities, smallish group (25) of lovely, considerate, fellow travelers (we were in the minority of “younger” folks and we are in our 50s), excellent included tours, mostly lovely hotels/lodges, amazing breakfasts/dinners, included porter services at all stops, Smartours CEO personally responded quickly to our inquiry regarding booking cost concern, and our delightful and attentive guide Jonathan. Cons: 6 hour scheduled layover, most uncomfortable 14+ hour flight ever via South African Airways, trip extension Vic Falls guide was very personable, but not very attentive, Smartours sends trip info only 2 weeks prior to departure (would love to have had this info sooner), several of the optional tours were mediocre. But honestly...if you’re a frequent traveler...these concerns are pretty minor. I will definitely be recommending the South Africa Tour to friends for value/quality and hope that ST keeps its word about limiting group sizes to under 25. I will definitely use them again in the future!

Outstanding Cultural Adventure

I have taken 13 trips with WT, most recently a marvelous adventure in Viet Nam and Cambodia. Always difficult to name a favorite since their trips offer such a great mix of culture, history and scenic wonders. Each trip is unique but all trips share their great attention to detail, incredible trip leaders and a single, professional point of contact. Our Viet Nam trip no exception, the opportunities for exposure to the history, and culture (and incredible cuisine) was outstanding! Looking forward to my 14th!

Some of the most memorable experiences I've had

We’ve taken nearly a dozen trips with this outfit and they are first rate. Some of the most memorable experiences I’ve had. Their guides are exceptional (except one!) and really add to the trip. The clientele they attract is also exceptional and make the trips more enjoyable, as does the small group size. I recommend them to everyone I know who is traveling somewhere where logistics are an issue. We have several more trips planned with them already. Also important, the guides they contract with overseas like them. The company treats them well. That’s important because it allows them to attract the best talent out there.

Awesome Trip to Australia

I had an amazing time traveling to Australia, we started in Sydney and moved further exploring the coast to Surfers Paradise. The highlight of this tour was no doubt sailing to Whitsundays islands! Whitehaven beach was absolutely breathtaking, you can never get sick of white sand and turquoise waters! And diving there was beyond all expectations! I had truly great experience, we stayed in very good hotels and had an unforgettable time in Australia.

Fantastic experience!

Did West Coast Trail with them in August 2019. Fantastic experience! There was nothing much for our group to worry about apart from enjoying the technical walk and the views. Our guide Tom educated us, set a great pace which all of us were comfortable with and prepared the meals for us! I would do it again if I could.

Loved the experience of a self-guided trip!

Loved the experience of a self-guided trip! We generally do cycling trips on our own but decided to choose a company to do the Petit Train du Nord with our 3 kids. Very happy we did, it was so much easier with the baggage transferred every day and the nice accommodations pre-booked for our family.

What Makes Great Canadian Trails Stand Out? They are an active travel specialist in Canada, offering hiking and cycling trip throughout the country on Canada's iconic and lesser-known trails. Travelers can hike with small groups (typically 10 or less) of like minded individuals led by expert guides from the region, or choose to travel on a self guided trip on which all the logistics are taken care of: accommodation, luggage transfers, maps and route notes, emergency line, bicycle rental, etc. If you’re feeling daunted about planning your own epic outdoor experience in the great Canadian wilderness, they’re here to provide all the support you need so that you can enjoy your trip to the fullest. Who Will Enjoy Traveling With Great Canadian Trails? If your idea of a perfect travel experience involves being in the great outdoors, led by expert, professional, and knowledgeable guides, then these trips are for you. It also doesn’t hurt if you enjoy a physical challenge, are open to the rustic nature of outdoor travel, and are excited to meet fellow hiking and outdoor travel enthusiasts. While this might sound hardcore, Great Canadian Trails also knows you’re on vacation. They help you explore Canada’s landscapes without the burden of a heavy pack or luggage. Trips are offered in a number of different grades, so you can be as hardcore or as “relaxed” as you want. They offer a multitude of outdoor activities to enjoy, and a sense of adventure is key, even for the easier trips. Depending on the trip level, a basic level of physical fitness is required, though they have travelers from many age groups - the average age is between 35 and 65, with a mixture of solo travelers, group of friends, couples, and families. Top Destinations Canada offers a wealth of outdoor activity, and fantastic scenery, which you will enjoy daily when you travel with Great Canadian Trails. Guided trips are on iconic multi-day hikes such as the West Coast Trail, Chilkoot Trail, Fundy Footpath and Long Range Traverse and within breathtaking parks like Gros Morne in Newfoundland and the mountain parks of the Canadian Rockies. Self guided trip options take travelers to discover the East Coast Trail in Newfoundland, the Sunshine Coast of British Columbia, the Confederation Trail and Gulf Shore Ways on Prince Edward Island, the amazing cycling paths of Quebec, the Niagara wine region, and much more. Great Canadian Trails Travel Style Though their name would suggest an emphasis on hiking, with Great Canadian Trails, you can choose from a wide variety of trip themes. If you’re less a fan of hard core hiking, perhaps a cycling tour or even a culinary outing would be more up your aisle. Great Canadian Trails trips can focus on any of these areas: Cycling (self guided and guided), Hiking (self guided and guided), Winter Sports, “Paddling” which includes Kayaking, Canoeing, and Rafting, Culinary, Mountaineering, and even Small Ship Cruising. Trips are carefully classified by physical level, so you can choose the best one for your abilities as well as enjoyment! 1. Discovery & Cruising - these trips are the lightest in terms of physical activity. Walks will involve extremely mild elevation changes. Typically you will be no higher than 2500m. Additionally these trips don’t usually involve camping, though facilities will be basic in some areas. Accommodations will be in basic, comfortable hotels. Travelers should be able to walk on various terrains for a few hours a day. 2. Adventure Touring - Camping and basic lodging, sometimes at high elevations. You should be fit and able to participate in up to 5 hours of physical activity. Terrain can be rough and rocky. If you have a moderately active lifestyle already, this physical grade should be plenty manageable for you. 3. Introductory - Far from being an intro level, these trips are basically an introduction to hardcore outdoor adventure travel, and require a high level of physical fitness, as well as some base knowledge in outdoor travel. Trips will involve trekking or walking, cycling, rafting or sea kayaking. Expect to be active between 5-6 hours a day, and keeping a steady pace. Trips will not travel above 4000m. If you’re looking for a slightly more challenging venture, Great Canadian Trails also offers trips that fall into an “Introductory to Moderate” bucket. 4. Moderate - These trips involve traveling at a steady pace for between 6-7 hours a day. Most Moderate trips involve carrying a day pack or a heavier backpack depending on the trip. There is also a “Moderate to Challenging” grade if you’re after a trip with some more challenging aspects. Activities include trekking, cycling, rafting or sea kayaking. 5. Challenging - Head out into remote wilderness areas for trekking, cycling or rafting come rain or shine. On these trips you can expect to be active for between 8-10 hours a day at high altitude. A very high level of physical fitness is required, and you must be willing and able to carry a pack weighing up to 8kg (roughly 17lbs). 6. Entry Level Mountaineering / exploratory treks - Looking to improve your mountaineering skills and learn from the best? These trips are ideal for first time moutnaineers eager to stretch their outdoor adventure travel wings. This is true adventure, in remote locations and sometimes extreme weather conditions. Prior mountaineering knowledge will be helpful but is not required. Intermediate level is also offered, and could be a good trip type for those who have some mountaineering experience under their belt. 7. Advanced Mountain Expedition - For travelers well equipped to go hardcore and who have some experience, these trips are at an advanced level. Participants should be prepared to share in the responsibility of setting up and breaking down camps, and prior mountaineering experience is required. Why Choose a Tour With Great Canadian Trails? They work with local communities to ensure that travelers have authentic experiences in every destination: learn about local customs, taste regional dishes and explore beyond the tourist trails. Their trips are powered by human energy; by bike or by foot. All group departures are fully-supported with an expertly trained local group leader and support staff. Because the physical nature of the itineraries varies greatly amongst trips, they have developed a grading system to help travelers choose the trip that would best meet their expectations and abilities. Great Canadian Trails is the operator that will allow active travellers to explore Canada hassle-free. Whether they are looking to hike an iconic trail without carrying a full pack, or to hike or cycle between communities without the worry of how to get there and around or how to find the perfect accommodation for a truly immersive experience.

Happy Wife

I definitely recommend Pacific Delight Tours. I spent a long time looking for the right agency to plan our private family trip of 10 people to China. We were very happy Pacific Delight Tours, specifically the office located in Flushing, NY. I spoke with them often via phone and email, and since we are from New York, we also met with them several times at their office in person. I liked that their office is legit and they were always very responsive to our family's many questions and concerns. Charmaine (manager) and Adrienne (our group booking agent) were patient and made sure our tour was exactly what we wanted. They helped us with every detail and did everything from getting our VISAs to making customized group travel arrangements for the 7 cities we visited in China (Beijing, Shanghai, Suzhou, Xian, Guangzhou, Taishan, and Zhangjiajie). PDT handled all the hotels, inter-china flights, bus and rail transportation (we wanted to try out a high speed train), bus drivers, English speaking tour guides, activities, entrance fees, and meals for each city. Each guide met us at the airport and also when it was time to leave, went with us to the airport as an English to Chinese translator for the airport ticket counters and made sure all of our bags were checked. Basically PDT handled everything for us, so we didn't have to think. PDT is a mid priced agency and you get what you pay for. They were well worth the $, especially for a completely private, customized tour. Small tip: China is very different and has VERY different standards than the US. It is worth it to upgrade to 5 star hotels. We tried to balance spending and booked 4 star hotels for 2 cities and regretted it for Xian (our least favorite city). Traveling often, we have reasonably high standards for hotels and the 5 star hotels PDT booked were nice and well worth the extra $ (keep in mind we are talking China standards). The only thing I do not recommend is booking pre-determined meals. Being spoiled by New York food and traveling often, we did not like many of the tourist restaurants (except in Zhangjiajie and Guangzhou, the guides for those cities went the extra mile for us for meals). Btw, JOHNSON, our tour guide for Zhangjiajie by far exceeded our expectations! Our guides for Beijing and Guangzhou were good as well. For Xian and Shanghai they were average but sufficient for our needs. Anyways, each city is different in the culture, types of people, and types of food they serve. But once the PDT office in NY found out we were unhappy about the food or something, they were very accommodating. If you never been to China, expect that much of China is very different than what us westerners were used to. I also recommend PDT for the VISA process. They did all of our VISAs. We also had trouble getting a VISA for a few of us and Charmaine and the PDT team went above and beyond to help us with it. They were well worth the money and saved us the time of going back and forth to the consulate. We will reach out to the Pacific Delight Tours office in New York again to book future trips. Both Charmaine and Adrienne were a pleasure to work with. I've also recommended them to our family and friends.

A wonderful trip!

I travelled with my 23 yr old daughter and we had a great time. Lots of superlatives which have been covered by reviewers below, so I will not repeat them, but suffice to say that this trip exceeded both our expectations in terms of the amazing variation in landscape in the iconic National Parks visited, and the diversity of activities - ranging from exciting hikes, to laying on the ground in Death Valley looking at the Night Sky. Never a dull moment - and our guide inserted little surprises at regular intervals. Perhaps meeting our inspirational Navajo guide in Monument Valley and learning about her childhood and culture. But lots to inspire both of us .... Joseph Spaid was an incredible leader. He was so knowledgable, approachable, engaging and fun. He was very interesting to chat to, and worked so hard to make sure everyone’s needs were met. We were quite a disparate crowd of 11, some very experienced hikers, others recovering from recent injury, but he found ways to embrace that - I wish I had his energy! Take a brolly as sun shade for Death Valley! And rehydration tabs/powder when it's really hot. We all used it and had no problem with overheating even in August. You get dusty walking so plenty of walking gear - it is a busy trip and there wasn’t much time for washing. I was pleased to have my poles in Zion and the Grand Canyon for long (albeit beautiful) uphill stretches. I would definitely advise a few days in San Francisco before joining the trip. It is an incredible city. Our flight from Heathrow was delayed by 28 hours, so we missed one of our three planned days, but we still were well able to meet up with the Group on Sunday. Las Vegas didn’t appeal to us, so we didn’t stay at the end, and we in time to fly out on the same night. The helicopter flight over the Grand Canyon was just extraordinary! As an introduction to SW America, this trip takes some beating. It was fantastic. Thank you Exodus and Grand American Adventures!!

A magical trip! One of my best ever!

This trip far exceeded my expectations on every level. The underwater wildlife encounters were superior to any other snorkeling I've done. There's an abundance of things to see and coupled with the chance to scuba dive and excellent water conditions - it's a top notch destination. The boat was very comfortable, the crew was excellent and took care of every need, and the food was awesome. Ranks as one of my all-time favorites!

The National Parks

Very busy , hugely interesting itinerary. Some quite breathtaking scenery, with opportunities for physical activity in order to experience it more fully. Very good tour leader, experienced, knowledgeable and well organised. Tour group (9 of us) , various ages and experiences, combined well. A great experience. Hard to pick one particular moment or event. Perhaps the experience of Yosemite: view of the valley from Glacier Point, variety of hikes, and also appreciating the national park beyond the valley itself. Very good. See above. Some long days in the bus, but that doesn't have to be a problem- it can just mean that you see more.

Terrible, the guide ruined our trip

Our guide tried to skip almost all of the things on our itinerary and we had to fight with him to get him to do half of the things we paid for! He hated his job, didn't do any of the guide portion and really ruined our trip to Sri Lanka. Overall, this company was terrible to deal with and didn't care about what their guide did! We didn't get what we paid for at all. Stay away from them!

Based in Paris, Evaneos is similar to a travel agency, though with a heavily personal and social community touch. What Makes Them Stand Out? Evaneos puts you in touch with local travel agents who are there to help you design a custom trip catered to what you want to see and do. They provide easily accessible sample itineraries to help you design the perfect trip.   They are also an effective tool for local travel agents and DMC’s to find new clients. In essence, Evaneos allows the traveler to get directly in touch with the resources often used by traditional tour companies. If you are on the fence about whether you want a small group guided tour, speaking with an agent from Evaneos can clear this up. Agents have a lot of flexibility - and you can still join a tour through them if you end up deciding this is the right mode of travel. Discussing one on one with a local expert can help make this decision clearer! Who Travels With Them? Evaneos attracts a younger traveler seeking creative control over their travel experience. This is also apparent in how they’ve structured their social community. They will appeal most to travelers who are somewhat budget conscious, care about responsible and sustainable travel, and value having a local guide. Evaneos agents are helpful for providing local expertise and knowledge about how to make your trip ideas fit into a viable itinerary. Where Do They Operate? Currently trips are available all over the world, excepting Antarctica - a majority of tours are centered in Europe and Asia, and very few travel to North America. Why Travel With Them? You may be thinking that a guided tour isn’t right, but also may be unsure about creating your own travel experience from scratch. If you are looking for help crafting an experience that has a local focus, with professional input this is a great way to find agents and travel advisors to help you do just that. Prices vary, but are generally affordable - around the same amount as a group tour but this is a great option if you’re looking for something a bit different than a traditional tour. Unlike a traditional travel agent, flight arrangements are not always included.

I would definitely recommend Collette!

We just came back from Sicily. Our tour manager Jovanka Mrdja was wonderful. She was very knowledgeable and made the tour fun. Our driver Franco was also wonderful. He made us feel very safe while navigating the narrow, windy roads. I would definitely recommend Collette and look forward to touring with them again and would love to have Yovanka as our guide

Classic Collette Tours - This is what they call their Flagship collection, group tours that make the postcard come to life. Visit all the must see sites, enjoy cultural experiences, all with a professional and knowledgeable guide, there to help make your travel as seamless as possible. Groups are on the larger side 2. Explorations - These tours are about going deeper, meeting locals, and getting off the beaten path. “Authenticity” is a big word for Collette Explorations. You’ll experience the destination in a smaller group, an average of 18 people, allowing for access to more local experiences not available to larger groups. Classic sites will also be included in your itinerary, but the focus is mostly on unique experiences. 3. Spotlights - Have a shorter amount of time and don’t want to miss anything? Collette Spotlight tours are designed to maximize your city stay or short getaway experience. These are primarily walking tours, packed with sightseeing, historical and cultural information, but with some downtime as well. Typically these tours are between 5-9 days. 4. River Cruise - A very popular mode of travel, particularly for 50+ travelers, river cruising is ideal for those seeking a leisurely vacation, unpacking only once, enjoying gliding by beautiful sites and participating in various guided shore excursions. Collette river cruises go around the world, including China, Egypt, and Europe. 5. Faith - For those travelers interested in visiting religious sites, Collette has a group of tours dedicated to faith based travel. Visit world famous icons and learn their ancient histories. Collette Faith tours visit everything from grand churches to the humble beginnings of the three major world religions in the Holy Land. Tours are history based with an emphasis on finding deeper spiritual significance and meaning. 6. Impact Travel - Being a responsible traveler is an important component on all Collette tours, however if you’re seeking to do more to give back, their Impact Tours are a great way to do so. Sightsee with a purpose as you assist with local initiatives, volunteering among the community, helping in classrooms, and protecting local wildlife. Why Choose a Tour with Collette? If you are looking for an entertaining, fully escorted, active tour to explore new cultures, and enjoy unique experiences, Collette could be for you. They provide a dedicated guide, and handle all the details throughout the tour. Free time is available on some days, but for the most part expect fairly full itineraries and a good amount of walking. Some optional excursions are offered during the tour, so you can tailor your experience to a certain extent. This is a great opportunity for meeting fellow travelers in a similar age range. Collette tours are open to everyone, but the majority of people on your tour will be older - in the 50+ range. Collette tours are ideal for travelers who want to have fun, enjoy the outdoors, and are open to new experiences.

Global Basecamps specializes in designing custom tours for those who want to travel independently but also want support while doing so. With help from the Global Basecamps team, you can choose your own itinerary and be as flexible as you want to be. Meanwhile, Global Basecamps promises support before, during, and after your trip. That support includes advice and help with planning and logistics; selecting and booking transportation, restaurants, lodgings, and activities; and arranging for local tour guides and transfers. But you’ll be traveling on your own rather than with a group, and have full say in where you want to go and for how long, and what you want to do while there. They will arrange safaris, treks, small ship cruises and other tours from Morocco to Ecuador, Japan to Uganda. Global Basecamps outlines a number of tours that you could take, for “inspiration” -- such as “Beyond the Big Five: Uganda, Tanzania and the Spice Island” (Zanzibar), one of National Geographic Traveler’s pick for Top Africa Tours of a Lifetime for 2014 -- but you’re free to modify it as you like. In general, expect to pay more for customized independent trips than for group travel, though you can customize the budget level you feel comfortable with as your arrangements are made. The company prides itself on fostering sustainable tourism and environmentally friendly lodgings, and works with local guides and outfitters to benefit economies in the countries visited.

This June, I led a group of 12 on a tour to Ireland. Maggie Lunde was my group specialist who did an excellent job helping me achieve the desired plans for our visit. She was thorough and very responsive to our needs. Our chauffeur for the tour was Martin McAviney, a delightful guide and great friend to us. From the start, he let me know that he was there to fulfill all our plans and wishes and to feel free to communicate them clearly to him. He not only delivered but once he had a sense of our group, he gave us excellent additions which fit perfectly for us. His warmth and great sense of humor added greatly to the enjoyment and success of tour. Members thanked me afterward for "making our dreams come true" and another described the tour as "life-changing" I whole-heartedly share these accolades with Martin and Maggie.

First cruise, ever! We did a land & sea journey to Alaska through Holland America Line. This is not a review of the trip (which was great!) so much as how HAL handled our complaints of damaged luggage. My sister's luggage arrived at our Yukon hotel with the latch broken, her clothes spilling out. She filed a report. We discovered damage to a corner of my husband's luggage at the departing airport. Too late to do a report...but HAL's property claims were wonderful, in particular, Mr. Scott Gerstl, who even called me to clarify details. He was empathetic and kind. We were reimbursed for both pieces of luggage.

Choosing an Australia Tour Company

Australia is an enormous country, so it’s important to consider what you want to see when you’re there, and how you want to travel.

If it’s your first time visiting, you probably want to see the Great Barrier Reef, Ayers Rock, and Sydney - and these sites are included on a large majority of Australia itineraries. To see all of them, try and find a tour company specializing in long tours of a week or more. You could do it in less time, but it might be uncomfortable and rushed.

If you want to expand beyond this common tourist track, some Australia tour companies offer itineraries that visit Western Australia, Tasmania, and Melbourne.

Australia is very popular for overland travel - a style that is open to all ages, but primarily enjoyed by younger travelers. Overland trips attract adventurous outdoorsy people who love building a community atmosphere, are social, and game to pitch in wherever needed - setting up camps, cooking, and cleaning. One of the top companies to consider for an overland tour in Australia is Intrepid Travel.

If you have a solid two weeks (or more) to travel, consider finding a tour company that offers combined Australia and New Zealand itineraries. This is a great way to visit the Oceania region, which is a trek to get to for many westerners. Take advantage of the long flight and kill two birds with one stone!
