What travelers are saying

"Kensington Tours is a vendor with nasty, pushy old school sales tactics and sketchy opaque pricing to get you fleeced in my opinion, read on ! Kensington Tours pre-charged my Amex Centurian card a staggering $85,985.00. for 6 nights without international airfares in one cost-opaque invoice. This consisted of a simple assembly of 9 hotel room nights in 3 locations, 6 in-country economy flights, 3 airport pickup/drop offs, a 2 day 'tour' and a 1-day expedition on a small boat. It was so bad we declined the 2nd tour day and boat trip. The full retail cost of the trip, which would include profits to Kensington Tours, is estimated at $30,140.47 versus their invoice of $ 85,985.00. That is a staggering overcharge of $54,859.43. see details below. The experience should have been amazing for this amount of money, but the cost was so egregious for the average to low quality of the tours, flights, boat, and cheap or kerb-side restaurants and food establishments I decided to assemble the full retail price for these activities by speaking directly with all the major vendors. These are mostly time-specific cost comparisons on the days we were there. Both hotel general managers informed me the costs were about the same as on the previous days for the day extensions they quoted. i.e. peak season pricing. The full retail costs I've assembled would include any tour outfits profits on the hotel, airfare and lunch as they buy wholesale. It should be a close season-specific estimate. This was verified by a call from Kensington Tours Director of Asia sales who confirmed she couldn't reveal room prices because they have contracts with the hotels for discounts over retail. Kensington Tours provided near zero value, I also didn't get the typical additional hotel $ benefits, comped amenities and prestige of direct Centurion bookings, instead the reservations showed as a lowly Kensington Tours operator booking. Kensington Tours unilaterally declares their sales brochure is a de facto contract agreement without either attaching the contract doc to my knowledge or getting a counter signature, i.e. it's not a contract and would never hold up. They attempt to hide behind 'private discount contracts' with hotels and insinuated to me costs were 3x reality The comped me back $30,000.00 because I have some leverage, it should have been $55,000.00. I'm still considering whether to file a quick suit, they'll eat at least the balance defending against me in attorney fees. I'll see if I can be bothered to do that. I probably will, to let others know to be careful and not use an outfit like this. Hopefully save folks their hard earned money. My bottom line, Kensington Tours is a disgrace run the other way. What travelers are saying

"Most of the people on this 17-day river cruise was quite elderly and infirm. Therefore the complimentary excursions were painfully slow walking. Local guides mostly told stories of their own upbringing and the conflicts they lived through. There was not much history on any of the excursions; and none of the buildings we saw gave us an opportunity to go inside, even the paid excursions. The accommodations were excellent, except that we paid for the best veranda but could not sit on our veranda because for the first 5 days our ship was packed tight next to another Viking ship. Food was good, except for dinners which were quite mediocre and never captured the flavor of the local foods."

What travelers are saying

"We booked a National Geographic expedition Holland and Belgium by River. The promotional literature promised a 14-day deposit refund window. The “invoice” was marked “non-refundable” deposit. We completed the National Geographic Traveler Information. About 8 days later we received the “Travel Agreement” to be signed. We both approved and signed the National Geographic documents. A Cruise Line Travel agreement was enclosed but had no signature line. This document contained language which was unacceptable. We submitted the signed NatGeo documents. The following day we canceled the trip due to the unacceptable Cruise Line language. Cancellation was made 12 days after booking and no deposit was returned. We were told on the phone that the refund deadline was triggered by the 14 day window OR signatures on the Travel Agreement which ever came first. This was NEW information. To date, we have received NO refund of our $1000. We cancelled our trip within the advertised 14 day window."

What travelers are saying

"We purchased two backpacks from Rick Steves Europe. One of them arrived damaged and unusable. Their website says that you must contact them if you receive damaged merchandise. I have attempted to email them through their website and I have left 3 voicemails (nobody answers the phone, ever!) and nobody has contacted me back. At this point, it seems like I've been ripped off. Buyer beware. Extremely disappointed."

What travelers are saying

"I am a 12 time traveler with Grand Circle and OAT. But maybe no more. They are impossible to reach by phone without waiting for hours. I even tired their emergency phone number and was on hold for hours. What if I had been stranded in a foreign country? They cancelled my Eastern Europe to Black Sea Cruise in Sept 2021 and cited "covid" or "civil unrest" issues. Baloney. They cancelled because they did not sell out the cruise and lied about it to me. I know because I went with Viking during the same month with no excuses like Grand Circle gave me. Add to that they promised me a $1,000 credit on my next trip- which was to Antarctica in December. The invoice they sent me showed the credit- and 1 month later a new invoice arrived with the credit removed. Why? Another lie? Something is really wrong here with the company now and I would suggest be very careful with bookings as they are not the same company I traveled with for the past 12 years."

Austria Tour Selection Trips

  • June through September are the best months for warm weather touring. December to April provides the setting for winter activities.
  • The magnificent mountains surrounding Innsbruck offer a wide choice of hiking opportunities, from gentle trails perfect for a relaxing family walk to challenging treks.
  • From spring to fall, certified guides lead free hikes to and through meadows, dense woods and scenic overlooks.
  • Most Austrian children begin to study English in the third grade. If you don’t speak German and need directions or other assistance, look for a youngster, who probably will be happy to practice the English learned at school.
  • Trains are a good way to get around in Austria. They’re usually spotless, run with set-your-watch punctuality and serve food that would be at home in many a restaurant.
  • If you’re a fan of “The Sound of Music” motion picture, which turned 50 in 2015, you might wish to take a tour of places in Salzburg associated with the story, and even spend a night or more at the original von Trapp home. It has been turned into a 12-room hotel which is furnished and maintained in the ambience of the time when the von Trapp family lived there.

Common countries also visited on Austria tours

When it comes to traveling in Europe, an exciting part of planning a trip is the relative proximity of countries to one another. There is an extensive amount of diversity in lifestyle, culture and attractions within Europe and combining countries in a single trip gives you the opportunity to immerse yourself in this diversity. Travelers can easily combine 2 or more countries in a single trip on a European tour, even one as short as 7-10 days.

With regards to Austria, the most common country that tour operators pair with Austria is Switzerland. The reasoning behind this is the draw of the expansive landscapes, intriguing cultures and the proximity of these two countries.

Additionally, Austria tours offer itineraries that include visits to surrounding countries such as Czech Republic, Hungry, Italy or Germany amongst others. Many tours that include some of these countries often visit the iconic cities of Budapest, Prague, Venice or Berlin.

Top Austria travel tips

Below are a few travel tips for ensuring that your trip to Austria is unforgettable.

  1. Most Austrians speak a fair amount of English but as always, it’s a great idea to learn some of the local language (German) to connect with the locals more.

  2. In general, the prices include taxes and fees. That being said, at restaurants, there is an expected 5-10% tip on top of your bill.

  3. The water in Austria is extremely clean and delicious, so you can enjoy the local water. That being said, the wine and beer is also enjoyable too.

  4. Sundays are generally a day of rest, so many businesses will be closed on that day. It’s a great opportunity to enjoy some recreation and relaxation on your trip as well.

  5. Thoroughly research the season and location that your visiting and pack accordingly. For example, if you are going to visit the Alps in the winter, bring warm jackets and layers and/or ski gear. It’s best to pack things that are practical and necessary.
