Things to do in Belize - Expert’s guide

Coronavirus Update

Belize is currently one of only countries open to all travelers, including those from the United States. Airports are set to reopen in Belize on August 15th and travelers must register on a Belize health app before entering the country.

1. The Blue Hole

Top Belize attraction Blue Hole

You might think “what is so special about some darker blue water, surrounded by lighter blue water?” And truly, pictures cannot really do justice to the awe inspiring natural phenomenon of Belize’s Great Blue Hole. Located only 40 or so miles offshore, and measuring 400 feet deep with a diameter of 1000 feet, this attraction is a staple on most Belize tour itineraries.

The Blue Hole is a “marine sinkhole” causing dramatic coloration. It is part of Lighthouse Reef, and frequently visited for snorkeling and scuba diving on tours of Belize. Going with a guide is a great way to learn more about the many unique geological properties of this top Belize attraction.

2. Caye Caulker

Caye Caulker in Belize

This island off the coast of Belize is a tiny tropical paradise. With a large creole influence, you can expect delicious fresh seafood, and a laid back caribbean style - including no cars anywhere to be seen.

The ocean beckons with a beautiful reef to explore, as cyclists and pedestrians enjoy the idyllic country roads, complete with reggae sounds hanging in the air. This is a place to slow down. And if you don’t, the locals will remind - out loud - to “go slow”.

3. Belize Barrier Reef

Barrier Reef in Belize

Queensland Australia may spring to mind when one thinks “Barrier Reef” and while it is spectacular, the Belize Barrier Reef is a worthy rival. The Belize Barrier Reef was in fact removed from the UNESCO endangered species list in mid 2018.

The largest reef system in the northern hemisphere, the Belize barrier reef spans 125 miles - off the northern coast of Belize. Comprised of 7 marine reserve zones which house islands and atolls, the reef provides an ecosystem for over 500 fish species. Snorkeling and diving are permitted, but be respectful! Don’t remove anything from the reef as a souvenir.

4. Lamanai Mayan Ruins

Lamanai Mayan ruins in Belize

Central America is full of Mayan archaeological sites, with Tikal in Guatemala taking most of the recognition - perhaps we can thank George Lucas for that. However there is much to see in Belize as well for you ancient history buffs!

Lamanai is one of the biggest Mayan ruin complexes in Belize, located in the north, and well worth taking your time to explore. Usually accessed via the water, you can also visit by driving in, but beware that it’s about an hour long bumpy ride along an unpaved road.

Once there, you can spend hours wandering through the ruins - you may even encounter some under current excavation! Some temples even allow you to climb to the top, though be careful if you choose to do so. There is very little in the way of safety precautions.

You can also stop into the nearby museum to observe some unearthed artefacts and learn about the history of the complex.

5. San Ignacio

While itineraries in Belize mainly tend to focus on the tropical beach and coastal areas, San Ignacio lies far inland, near the northeastern border with Guatemala. There are many adventure activities in the area including cave diving and cave rafting.

The nearby Rainforest Medicine Trail is a very interesting look at the many medicinal properties held by local plant life in Belize.

6. Birding in Belize

Macaw in Belize

Covered with protected wildlife areas, the tropical environment in Belize means wildlife sightings are second to none. Birding is particularly popular, with upwards of 500 species to spot.

Staying at a jungle eco-lodge is a highly recommended way to ensure you’ll spot many of the native bird species in Belize. These include several species of elegant herons, buzzing hummingbirds, fierce hawks, beautiful terns, and of couse colorful macaws.

7. Belize Zoo

More a wildlife rehabilitation center than a zoo, this attraction is perfect for animal lovers eager to observe some of the native species of Belize. The zoo is notable for only housing those animals that are native to Belize, and focusing on helping sick, injured, or orphaned animals - some of which would never survive in the wild. In other cases, the zoo works on rehabilitating the animal, with the goal of releasing them back into the wild.

8. Snorkeling

Snorkeling in Belize

It’s no secret that Belize is a top ocean activity travel destination. The snorkeling along the coast is spectacular, with dozens of hidden coves and calm waters - making it an ideal family destination. Of course if you’re looking for something a bit more adventurous there are ample opportunities under the waves for that as well.

Some of the top snorkeling destinations in Belize include Shark Ray Alley for seeing sharks and rays, Lighthouse Reef - the furthest from the coast so be ready to make a day of it, and Coral Gardens near Caye Caulker - highly recommended for beginners.

And if you’re not so into what can be found under the water, the scenery along the Belize coastline is just gorgeous. Relaxing on the ship deck with a cocktail and snapping the perfect selfie is a perfectly acceptable afternoon pastime as well as diving among the colorful sea life.

9. Ambergris Caye

Ambergris Caye top Belize destination

This is the largest island in Belize, and definitely a traveler hotspot. Unlike some of the smaller islands you’ll visit in Belize, Ambergris offers more in the way of amenities, activities, food, and places to stay. That said, the water is still the star. Snorkeling in the Belize Barrier Reef, diving, and cruising options abound, and there are numerous family friendly activities as well.

10. Hike Victoria Peak

If you’re looking for a challenge, set your sights on Victoria Peak, the second highest mountain in Belize. So named in honor of Queen Victoria, the peak is not recommended for novice hikers, and it takes between 3-4 days to reach the summit.

The trail is open during the dry season and February and May are considered some of the best times to go. You’ll encounter tons of wildlife along the way, and enjoy the amazing Belizian jungle.

All the activities on water were fantastic. The amazing abundant birdlife in the wetlands as we travelled by boat at dawn. The canoeing into a huge cave, the canoe ride back to our hotel and the most amazing snorkeling trip I could ever have hoped for surrounded by nurse sharks, rays and tropical fish. In addition we saw the Mayan temples at times when the large tourist groups had left the sites which made the experience even more atmospheric when we were often surrounded by jungle and the unique wildlife that inhabited it. The sound and sight of howler monkeys in the treetops as we walked around will stay with me for ever. Our early morning and evening walks were fabulous too. Wilfred our tour leader gave all of his time to us and ensured we maximised our experiences wherever we were. He was absolutely exceptional.

Contrasts of Mexico + Yucatan Peninsula Extension
Tour leader Luis was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. Itinerary for first 2 weeks was packed as full as it could have been, followed by a more relaxed week 3. There were some long journeys but transport was comfortable and there were plenty of stops. Hotels varied from very comfortable to more basic, but all were clean and welcoming.
