What travelers are saying

"We have loved Gate 1 and always sing their praises. We've been on 7 tours with another one booked for fall. We were supposed to leave for Ecuador this week, however the country is in a 60 day state of emergency with the escape of 2 infamous gang members. Tourists are advised to stay indoors and there is a daily curfew from 11pm-5am. (our flight was to land at 11:15pm). Our trip included stays in 2 of the main cities of unrest. There have been shootings, car bombings, hostage taking, closing of embassies, and other countries issuing do not travel warnings. Other tour companies have cancelled tours or offered refunds or rescheduling. Travel insurance does not cover wars or civil unrest, but we are clearly afraid to go there. Both we and our travel agent have reached out multiple times with our concerns and asked if we could reschedule or get some sort of credit. We continue to get the same reply either in person or via email...Gate 1 has your safety as our highest priority and we feel you are safe ("they are not targeting tourists") and your itinerary should not be impacted. What? Their highest priority is $ and not our safety. There is no way that's the tour we anticipated. We cancelled the trip and took a 90% penalty, loss of deposit, and $276 airline penalty. It's a LOT of money, but we would have been terrified, and it's not worth getting hurt or worse. Sorry, but it's not the company I want to do business with in the future."

What travelers are saying

"Andrew stole our money ($22,000) that we paid for a luxury Ecuador / Peru vacation. He also stole $8,000 from our friend that was meeting us in South America. He first took our calls in 2020-2021, then disconnected all numbers. We went to the credit card company, and were unable to get a refund. He is a scammer. Beware! The trip was in April 2020, but I finished with the credit card company in May 2022."

What travelers are saying

"At first I thought, maybe it was just me. Maybe I just had a poor customer service experience with Adventure Life. On my recent trip to Antarctica I met several other passengers, including my roommate who booked through Adventure Life. Each time and immediately they expressed the same exact challenges and concerns when working with Adventure life that I experienced. Being supplied with broken links to resources and documents, vague responses to specific questions, lack of pro-actively from Adventure Life, and a plethora of other issues. But I would recommend using Adventure Life, call them to help find the best dates and trip for you. Then book directly through the tour operators. I met several people on the trip that were able to find and negotiate discounts by skipping the agency and going directly to the tour operator."

What travelers are saying

"I went on a private 3-day tour of Mexico City with Vibe Adventures and our guide, Jorge, and it was absolutely amazing! The tour took us to the national anthropology museum, the historic center, Xochimilco, Coyoacan and its Frida Kahlo museum, and the incredible Teotihuacan ruins. Jorge was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about Mexican history and culture, which made the tour even more interesting. Visiting the National Anthropology Museum was a highlight, as we got to see artifacts from ancient civilizations. Exploring the historic center, Xochimilco, and Coyoacan allowed us to experience the city's vibrant culture and beautiful surroundings. The trip to the Teotihuacan ruins was breathtaking, and Jorge's explanations made it easy to understand the significance of this ancient site."

What travelers are saying

"First, let me say our tour guide Tomomi S. is hands down THE best tour guide I’ve ever had - knowledgeable, fun and made great efforts to ensure that we were comfortable and happy (MTSobek tour guides are independent contractors. Tomomi also works for other Adventure/Tour companies) Secondly, Japan is beautiful, clean and the Japanese people are very welcoming. The hiking in the national parks was amazing. It could have been a truly five-star experience if MtSobek had not cut corners so egregiously. The website said (at the time) group tours are 5-22 people. The tour gets canceled if the minimum is not met. When I paid there were TWO other people booked-a mother and daughter duo. Shortly before our departure date I called to see if the tour would be cancelled. I wanted my money back but Mt Sobek was “pleased to say that the trip would not be canceled”. In other words, I could not get a refund. At the last minute a guy named Matt signed up so there were four of us. Five days into the trip Matt left and took a train back to Tokyo. I said to him “You realize Mt Sobek is not going to refund you”. He said, “I don’t care, Mt Sobek scammed us.” With tax, the tour costs $11,645 for 13 nights. For that price there is an expectation that the accommodations Mt Sobek chooses would be decent and clean. We all fully expected a ‘traditional Japanese experience’ which often means no private bath and 8 out of the 13 nights we slept on futon mats on the floor. However, Mt Sobek consistently booked us in the cheapest Ryokans (hotels) in each area in which we travelled. Most of these hotels were unclean and very out-dated. One Ryokan they booked us in was listed on a hotel website for $40 USD/night when there were much nicer accommodations nearby for $100 USD/night. (The Japanese yen is way down, the luxury Park Hotel in Tokyo was $200 USD/night. A comparable hotel would have been about $800/night in Austin.). We were the only people staying in several hotels that accomadated many more people. The most egregious example of MtSobek’s booking the cheapest rooms is when we were booked at a large traditional ski lodge at the base of a spectacular mountain. It was beautiful on the website but had two very different wings. One wing was modern, clean and beautiful with simple beds. The other wing was very old (similar to a cheap Motel 6 that had not been updated since the 1970’s). The carpet and bathrooms were disgusting and like many of the Ryocans where we stayed the futon mats seemed as though they had not been cleaned In 30 years. Only after our tour guide checked us in did we realize we had been booked in the cheap rooms. I asked Tomo why. Immediately someone from MtSobek reached out to me and said, “gosh, I’m sorry you did not realize you were going to have a traditional Japanese experience”. Really? “Traditional” experience depends upon one’s budget. In the US, “traditional” to some people may be the Marriott, a Motel 6 or the Four Seasons Hotels. We were paying for a Marriott experience and received the one-star Motel 6 experience. Upon arrival in Tokyo I expected to be met at the airport by a driver (as many tour companies do). However, several days before our arrival dates in Tokyo, MtSobek sent an email telling us how to locate taking a city bus from the bustling Tokyo airport. That is interesting if you do not speak Japanese. MtSobek cleverly uses great photography and elaborate descriptions of the national parks and the hiking while using terms like “traditional Japanese experience with tatami-mat sleeping” to disguise sub-standard accommodations. At one point we were looking on-line at the very hotel where we were staying and did not even recognize it from the website pictures. The hiking was amazing. The group size was disappointing with just the three of us. I would absolutely recommend a hiking tour through Japan, just not with MtSobek."

"Our group had such an amazing time at Half Moon Caye Feb 4-10! So thankful to have had a wonderful trip before coronavirus shut things down. The guides were incredible and made the experience fun and educational. Ms Ann's cooking was excellent and she even let me help out in the kitchen one evening. There were a great variety of different activities, but I enjoyed snorkeling the most! Thanks for a great trip!"

Belize Tour Selection Trips

  • Flights are the most convenient and scenic way to get around the country and the national airline is Tropic Air. Propeller planes head north or south from central hubs and run like bus routes, making stops to pick up and drop off fellow passengers - even locals out running extended errands.
  • To maximize time in the country, be sure to spend a few nights in the jungle and a few nights on the coast. Try Ambergis Caye for beautiful beaches and world-class diving, Placencia for boho-luxe hotels and island hopping, and the Cayo District as a launch point for jungle lodges and Mayan ruins. Consider the less-traveled southwestern corner near Guatemala for even more remote forests and wildlife spotting.
  • November through May is considered peak season and June through November is off-peak. Those summer months are hot but still a nice time to travel; the rainy season is mainly concentrated in September and October.

Additional details

When considering a tour to Belize, you’ll want to think about the physical level and the lodging level. Most belize tours could be classified as either “Value (3 star)” or “Basic (2 star)” meaning your accommodation will be comfortable but with few amenities.

Who Will Enjoy Traveling in Belize?

Belize has plenty of opportunities for everyone in the family. There are awesome water activities and incredible beaches for those who like to relax and enjoy the water. There is jungle hiking and Mayan ruins to visit for those who want a different experience in nature. The mixture of relaxation and adventure is perfect, and everyone will be able to find something that they enjoy.

It’s important to note that Belize is largely an outdoor travel destination. If you’re not into spending a lot of time out in nature, you may not like the kind of travel Belize tours have to offer.

Belize Guided Tours

Belize is a very active country, and your tour will likely include many different outdoor activities. These may include, kayaking, caving, hiking, scuba diving, snorkeling, and sailing.

You can usually choose between different excursion options on the itinerary - sometimes a quieter choice such as a museum visit or archaeological tour will be available. Or you can simply opt out of the activity and spend a free day for some shopping or lounging at a cafe to watch local life go by.

Or you can consider a more Premium or Luxury tour where the activity level will still be high, but you’ll have more comfortable surroundings to rest in after a long day in the sun.

What Should I Pack for Belize?

Belize is pretty warm year-round, so bringing summer clothes is the way to go. T-shirts, shorts, beachwear are all necessary. In case it gets chilly, or you want some sun protection, a long sleeve shirt and long pants are good recommendations. For those looking to get out and go hiking, this is a smart idea for when you’re out in the jungle. You should also bring a light waterproof jacket in case it rains or gets a bit chilly.

Sun protection is also necessary! Bring a hat and sunglasses with UV protection to protect your face and eyes. Sunscreen should also be packed. If you’re going out snorkeling, look for a sunscreen that is reef-friendly as well. Bring insect repellent if you’re going hiking, as well as a small first aid kit.

Best Times to visit Belize

Belize is in Central America and is subtropical in climate - remaining hot and humid year round.

The best time to visit Belize is in November to mid-April, which is when Belize has it’s dry season. It’s a great escape for people in the Northern Hemisphere trying to get away from the cold winter. Expect to find warm, tropical weather (the daily average temperature is around 80 degree Fahrenheit), and sunny clear skies.

For those looking for an awesome snorkeling experience, this is the time to go, as the water is clearest during the dry season. End of April through May brings a jump in temperature, with daily averages reaching the high 80s, with a rise in humidity as well.

The rainy season in June through October is the low season, and often business shut down during this time of year. Generally you’ll experience less crowds and cheaper prices when traveling during this time. It is hurricane weather though!

What is the currency in Belize?

In Belize, the currency is the Belize Dollar, and is abbreviated as BZ$. The coins come in the options of one cent, five cents, ten cents, 25 cents, 50 cents and one dollar coins. The banknotes are available in BZ$2, BZ$5, BZ$10, BZ$20, BZ$50 AND BZ$100.

Getting to Belize

If you’re traveling to Belize, there is the option to fly into Belize Airport (Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport). If you’re in a neighboring country, such as Mexico, there are bus options from places like Cancun and Playa Del Carmen. Belize is also a popular stop among cruise ships, so there is a chance that your boat will stop in Belize if you’re taking a small ship cruise.
