Attentive to each person's needs

To me Cheepers is a10 star company. I love traveling and birding with them. The birding is outstanding, the bird guides outstanding, and the birders themselves are such wonderful people to be with. I like the casual, comfortable, non-competitive approach to birding. While our guides have unfailingly worked (and intensely) to make sure everyone sees the bird, I've never felt as if I were among high intensity birders who are competing either with others or themselves. And I can't remember a single trip where anyone was unable to see the bird. The price of each trip is what really appeals to my "retired budget." I've yet to experience any kind of lodging that was substandard; every place I have been, we've stayed at good places close to where we can get to the birds we want to see. The leaders are never intrusive or over bearing, yet are constantly aware of each person and attentive to each person's needs. Birding is hard work, yes; but birding with Cheepers is so much fun. I could go on but to use a very overworked word, this company is just plain awesome. It is my company of choice for any birding trip.

The Panama trip was so very affordable

The Panama trip was so very affordable, so many birds for relatively few bucks. Comparable tours were over twice the price for a shorter trip!

A naturalist's dream

Although this was primarily a birding tour (Taiwan endemics), even before the trip began I was very happy to receive a checklist covering not only birds but also mammals, reptiles, amphibians and butterflies. My ideal birding tour is one that looks for anything that flies, crawls, swims, walks... And this was exactly what I got. Guides Ken Behrens and Kuan Chieh Hung went above and beyond: not only did I see - and in most cases photographed - all 30 endemics, several endemic subspecies and even bonus birds like Fairy Pitta, I was also lucky enough to see several frogs, snakes, butterflies and mammals, including the rare Formosan Golden Bat. The guides respected my pace (I have trouble with hills due to a hip injury) and asked for my opinion when there were choices to be made. They also had me laughing a lot (always a bonus!). Most importantly, however, they showed vast knowledge of the animal species, their habits, calls and habitats. The tour was well organized and everything worked without a hitch. The days were very long and intense, but also very productive and rewarding. One very satisfied client here.

UGANDA TOUR JUNE 2019

This was our first visit to Africa and it was incredible. Our guide Crammy worked tirelessly to show us far more bird species than I anticipated. On top of that we saw a great variety of mammals in their natural habitat. Gorilla trekking was an experience we won't ever forget. Can't wait for our next trip with Tropical Birding!

Namibia & The Okavango Trip Type: Group Tour
Comprehensive birding tours for all levels. What Makes Them Stand Out? Considerably small group size means you have more time with the guide to learn about spotting different species and how to capture them in a photograph. They focus on quality with their tours - not just the end game of spotting a new species. Tours focus on bringing you to exciting new places for rare animal sightings and stunning landscapes. Birds are the star, but they incorporate finding other incredible wildlife as well. Who Travels With Them? Birding enthusiasts interested in a small group experience led by expert guides. They have a generous loyalty program for returning customers as well! All ages will enjoy traveling with them, though birding tends to attract an older crowd. Most of their tours are moderate intensity, with either easy or easy to moderate grade walking requirements and comfortable accommodations and transportation. However, they also offer harder and more extreme tours for the more adventurous souls. Where Do They Operate? They have tours around the world, including the polar regions. Why Travel With Them? The trip price is largely all inclusive leaving you with the headspace to relax and destress, simply enjoying experience of birdwatching, hiking, photographing, and meeting other birding enthusiasts. Their guides are not only birding experts, they truly help every tour go off without a hitch.

Highly recommend

This was the first time I had travelled with Eagle-Eye tours and with a birding group, after travelling to Africa twice on luxury safaris and being a bit dissapointed fellow travellers only wanted to see big game and not the smaller, but equally important, creatures which I appreciate. On this Eagle-Eye tour I felt I finally found 'my people' - folks who wanted to see birds, lizards, frogs, butterflies, snakes, flowers, bugs, bats and lichens - really knowledgeable naturalists. And boy we saw it all. It was a glorious trip. Ernesto our guide was like a nature savant...he knew everything about everything aspect of nature. Once, crouched over with his eyes glued to a spotting scope trying to locate some wee bird in the dense forest he said 'a toucanet just flew overhead' - that's how good of a birder he is. He drew birds in to us often with his own calls - and he knew where to find any bird. He took two of us out on a night time frogging adventure which I hope I never forget (red eyed frogs, brilliant forest frog, hatching dragonflies, cat eyed snake, and bugs galore). If any trip you're considering has Ernesto as a guide - sign up immediately. Our driver Jorge was also great, a lovely man, and good birder himself, and together they made a great team. The accommodations were okay, not luxury (except for our last hotel...and honestly...are you really going for the hotel rooms, or for all the great nature encounters you'll have) and the meals were simple (but as a vegetarian there was always something for me). The rooms were clean and most importantly the hotels were located within great parks/areas for birding - and that's what's most important - I'd give up luxury for location any day. The tour overall was well organized and designed to take you trekking in multiple, safe habitats. The only improvement would be to include one stop for souvenir/artisan shopping - but I seemed to be the only one among my fellow travellers who cared about that, and that's okay. I am definitely considering travelling with Eagle-Eye again, and especially with Ernesto. This was a 5-star trip for me, and that was largely due to Ernesto.

Trinidad and Tobago

One of the ladies on the trip was not fit physically or emotionally for the demands placed on one during a birding trip. The quality of service from some of the islanders (waitresses and cooks mainly) was wanting. Some of the locales we were taken to were uninviting (a refuse dump near a lagoon, a trail alongside shanty houses with unwelcoming inhabitants). And to top it off the birding was less than stellar. I thought that the birding guide did his best, but the trip was overall quite disappointing and expensive.

Comprehensive Hawaiian Island Tour in March 2019

This was a very satisfying tour of the three birdable islands; Maui is apparently not with restrictions at sites. Our very energetic and knowledgeable tour guide, Chris Burney, shepherded the six of us about and had really cased the sites out the previous week. Lodgings were just fine, in excellent locations. Some of the breakfasts were exceptional and the food at lunches and dinners diverse and good. Wifi does exist everywhere. Some of the walks, though short, were moderately strenuous as we were looking for endemic birds at 5000-7500 feet. No, we drove most of the way, but even the most fit panted a bit.

It was an experience of a lifetime

I went on the Ortelius Dec11-Jan12 with Douglas, Fail & Ted to The Falklands, South Georgia and the Antarctica Penusula. It was an experience of a lifetime, even now several years later I still love sharing my adventures, photos, video clips and yes still that smell of the penguin guano too! I would recommend Cheesemans to anyone who is passionate about nature, adventure and ecology.

TripFailure

We took a Polar Bear tour sponsored by Natural Habitat Adventures, a company in Boulder, from Nov. 15 to Nov. 18. I was afraid, based on my research, it was too late in the season to see bears. But the company assured me they were experts and it was not too late. I was mislead by the marketing people. The best chance to see bears is earlier in the season. We saw no bears, they had gone out on the ice, so the trip was a $13,000 failure. The company offered a big discount on a future trip but nothing else. I sent a letter requesting a partial cash refund. They never responded. My advice is find another company.

It was an incredible experience

I am just returning from the Tundra Lodge adventure (Oct. 21-26, 2018). It was an incredible experience. We saw a lot of polar bears (including a female and two cubs and also several males, sparring, right outside the Tundra Lodge) and two silver foxes. We experienced a beautiful environment and learned a lot about the ecosystem. We had wonderful food and care from the exceptional staff. Our guides, Heather and Rinie, were very knowledgable and passionate, with great senses of humor. Plus our group members took some great pictures. Thank you, NatHab!

Great sites, poorly managed

I grew up with National Geographic so when I signed up for a NG trip I was quite excited. I spent a lot of time on a crowded bus. Some of the accommodations were two star, peeling paint, smelly rooms, poorly catered. This was an expensive trip all my girl friend and we spent 17,000 dollars for the two of us. Some of the guides were actually wrong about what they were saying about the history of Sicily, and you did not have to be an expert to realize this. There were a number of representations that tour operators made that turned out to be less than accurate. The tour group one night was having dinner in Sorento, and I asked about the wine they were serving, that is the grape and vintage, the only explanation I got was "its red". In another circumstance, the tour operator lost guests at Pompeii, and then threatened to leave them. It was a mess. I could go on, but I would cross this trip off the list.

We just returned from an amazing experience exploring the Galapagos Islands then following up with another awesome week in Peru -- highlighted by touring the ruins of Machu Picchu. Wherever you go with National Geographic, which has been in the tour business for 15 years, you can expect doors to open: entry to research sites, archeological digs, private homes or special events. Many expeditions are accompanied by a National Geographic expert or expert team who share their knowledge and passion for a region and help make each experience enriching and unforgettable. Who Will Enjoy Traveling With National Geographic Expeditions? National Geographic is one of those special brands that has managed to successfully straddle the line between “your grandfather loves them” and “your eighteen year old sister loves them”. They cover a wide range of topics, themes, and travel styles, with the educational aspect always prevalent yet not overbearing. If you love feeling like an explorer and an adventurer when you travel, and love learning about the world from experts in a variety of fields, National Geographic is the perfect place for you. These trips are great for families, and you can choose a private tour or a family friendly group, where hands on activities will widen your children’s worldview in innumerable special ways. National Geographic trips are also extremely popular with photographers - novice photographers will enjoy their photography-centric tours, while many dedicated hobbyists can be found on their other trip styles as well. If you’re the kind of traveler who sacrifices the space for a pair of shoes in your suitcase for another lens or photography accessory...you’ll be right at home on a trip with National Geographic Expeditions. In the same way that National Geographic magazine has always inspired and furthered conversation and discourse, so too do their trips. The spirit of learning about the world is intertwined in every itinerary, so if you consider yourself a lifelong student, you should definitely consider traveling with National Geographic Expeditions. Top Destinations National Geographic Expeditions go all around the world, and cover almost every travel style imaginable. One might think they have a favoring of the more “exotic” locations but an impressive number of United States and Europe tours are offered as well as farther reaching destinations. Small-ship expeditions, done in conjunction with Lindblad Expeditions, can take you to Antarctica, the Galapagos and points beyond. National Geographic Expeditions Travel Style The travel style with National Geographic Expeditions has an aura of old fashioned exploration with a modern twist. National Geographic Expeditions is a family friendly outfit, offering a wide range of prices and trip styles. Trips vary from mid range budget to higher. Physical level is usually light to moderate. By virtue of their longstanding presence in the world, National Geographic has a wide reaching global network to lean on for incredibly unique and authentic lodging options, knowledgeable guides, and VIP access to historical and archaeological sites. They have several broad travel styles you can choose from: Land Trips - National Geographic Land Trips are immersive explorations, often covering nature and wilderness points of interest such as national parks. They also dive into ancient cities and cultures, with trips exploring everything from monks in Burmese mountainside temples to the lives of nomadic Mongolian peoples. Most trips are around 11 days and physical level is between light and moderate, with some trips featuring moderately challenging hikes in various altitudes. River Cruises - a relatively new addition, Nat Geo now offers around 7 river cruises in Europe covering the Danube, Rhine, and Douro. Currently they also have 1 river cruise in Asia, along the Irrawaddy. These trips are typically between 7 - 11 days and feature wine tasting, history tours, and very light physical activity. Private Expeditions - If you and your family, significant other, or a few close friends are looking for a more intimate travel experience than a group of strangers, Private Expeditions are a great way to travel. These trips are customizable, and can be crafted to perfectly suit your interests and dates. Photography Trips - National Geographic has consistently featured award winning travel photography. They run regular contests for those inspired by the thousands of groundbreaking and historic photographs taken by journalists and travel photographers around the world. On National Geographic photography trips you can actually learn tricks of the trade from real-world photographers and improve your skills. Train Trips - Travel was revolutionized with the implementation of the railroad, allowing people to travel in what was then a rapid pace from destination to destination. Today this ideal has been flipped on its head, and train travel is a leisurely paced excursion allowing time to relax and appreciate the slower meandering through beautiful countrysides. National Geographic train trips cover the classics, such as the Trans-Siberian railway and the Rocky Mountain railroad. Accommodations are comfortable, around a premium level, with options to upgrade. Active Expeditions - For those who enjoy a bit more of an adrenaline pumping and active travel experience, National Geographic also has trips for you. These trips feature multiple active outings, such as kayaking, hiking, and caving. Expect to explore the outdoors covering unique natural phenomena and gaining insight into how and why the landscape has been shaped the way it has. These trips also feature cultural insights, just to a lesser extent. Family Expeditions - National Geographic is the perfect company to travel with when you have curious and adventurous youngsters eager to see the world. They will learn about other cultures, people, food, nature and wildlife from experts with “cool jobs” that might even inspire lifelong interests and perhaps influence a career. These trips are specifically designed to be hands on, allowing everyone to get involved and learn about how things work. Private Jet Trips - For a luxurious and more lengthy travel experience, nothing beats a Private Jet tour. A dedicated team will be with you, and you’ll experience all the best that National Geographic has to offer from local guides to premiere accommodation. These trips are in a very high budget range, but if it’s in your wheelhouse - it’s a superb way to travel and cover a lot of ground. Journeys - Part of a partnership with G Adventures, these trips are adventurous and immersive small group excursions imbued with the spirit of National Geographic. The best of two top travel worlds! Why Choose a Tour  With National Geographic Expeditions? When you travel with National Geographic you are participating in and contributing to a spectacular legacy. Over the years National Geographic has cultivated a reputation for being about cultural exploration, scientific advancement, and broadening perspectives. Their travel experiences are perfect for anyone wishing to get back to the roots of what adventurous, experiential travel really means and enjoy discovering the world from multiple angles. Really one of the best parts about traveling on a tour with National Geographic Expeditions is the sheer breadth of knowledge, personal and professional experience their guides bring to the table. A memorable trip

I loved this trip . The Tucano is a great little ship, and if the weather's good you can eat out on the top deck and watch the river and rain forest go by. The guides were terrific -- they knew the area well, and could tell you about the use of medicinal plants or even take you piranha fishing. There were plenty of opportunities to go on shore and occasionally we'd visit an isolated village. My only disappointment was that it's hard to spot wildlife, though we did see some of the famous pink dolphins, heard plenty of howler monkeys, and, at night, spotted some sloths in the tree by spotlight.

Highly recommended!

We're a group of seven Norwegians staying in Kampala for a month. We got a weekend off and on really short notice Miriam managed to arrange an amazing 2 days/1 night trip to Murchison falls NP for us. We got picked up at our door and from there everything was perfectly planned and professionally executed. Our guide was a good and safe driver, and very knowledgeable about the park, the animals and the birds there. We were lucky enough to see a leopard dozing in a tree and a pride of lions eating a buffalo for breakfast - just because he knew just when and where to look. On our short trip Kagera safari managed to squeeze in: - a stroll around the top of the waterfall - a boat trip to see hippos, crocodiles and the bottom of the waterfall - two game drives to see some stunning scenery, giraffes, elephants, warthogs and countless other animals - and a traditional dance performance at our beautiful lodge. All this at a good price. Highly recommended!

Founded in 2012 by Miriam Kyasiimire, Kagera offers in depth, locally run safaris and gorilla treks in Uganda and Rwanda. What Makes Them Stand Out? They add a community touch to all their safaris. Travelers have the opportunity to visit the community on whatever safari they are on, whether gorilla trekking safari, wildlife or birding tour. Cars are safari vans and safari landcruisers which typically carry a maximum of 7 people, for each person to have access to a window. If the group is bigger they use more vehicles or take a coaster bus if they want to travel in one vehicle. Who Travels With Them? Customers are usually individual travelers, groups, or families; age ranges anything from 5 years to 70 years. The activity levels differ because some people engage in activities like gorilla trekking which is hectic whereas others stick to only game drives in national park. Most of the tours fall in the category of mid range pricing. Where Do They Operate? Uganda and Rwanda How Does it Work? Safari cars via road transport. They also arrange internal flights to especially Kidepo valley and Bwindi impenetrable national parks in Uganda. In Rwanda there are opportunities for helicopter rides. Why Travel With Them? They are a small independent and local agency that pays special attention to details. They are passionate about responsible tourism and work to provide opportunities for the local communities they work with to earn from tourism. They offer suggested itineraries, but encourage you to tweak for your exact preferences.

Great place for kids

Great place for kids. If you want to have a birthday in East bay a place to consider. We celebrated our grandson's birthday here. It was a hit. Has several games. Staff were nice.

Patagonia Trip

Overall we had a terrific experience. With the exception of El Calafate, the accommodations were all exceptional. The 5 day cruise from Porto Arenas to Ushuaia, although expensive, was worth it. Exceptional weather for end of March also helped. Highlights were Bariloche, Puerto Natalas and Torres del Paine (Chile postcard peaks), and Glacier Alley on the cruise. Ushuaia showed what 50 mph winds look like but the perpetual rainbow made it a great final stop. Working with Lost World was a pleasure. They were very responsive and followed up on everything including the days of arrival and departure in every city.

I love this place!

I love this place! My 4 y/o daughter loves to play here. She always meets a new little friend everytime we come...it's cute. My only complaint would have to be the food. I paid $7.50 for an ice cream cookie. That's a bit insane! Especially since you can't bring in any outside food and you are forced to eat what they sell. Since that's the case, I would highly recommend selling better quality food. If we have to pay for it, at least make it worth it, right?

Flawlessly planned

We (my wife and I and two friends) recently travelled to South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Botswana on a trip organized by Ker-Downey. Although we duplicated a trip taken by other friends some years ago, K-D did an excellent job in adjusting our itinerary and accommodations to suite our wishes. Every detail from start to finish including guided transfers was flawlessly planned. The hotels, lodges and camps were excellent although decidedly not budget. Americans tend to be a bit reluctant to travel to Africa and as a result miss some very unique opportunities. No doubt there are risks but Ker-Downey helps travelers in getting around and staying safely.

Cape Town organized a superb safari

Marcelo Novais of Ker and Downey, Cape Town organized a superb safari for us this past May/June 2017. We took Rovos Rail Pretoria/Victoria Falls (second time on the train - splendid experience). Sanctuary Chobe Chilwero lodge at Chobe NP was almost nest to the park entrance which was VERY convenient. Then off to Savute for & Beyond under Canvas which we loved. Great lion sightings. Sanctuary Baines' Camp, mainly water activities was great including having our bed on the deck and sleeping under the stars. Sanctuary Chiefs Camp in Moremi has been very recently redone and is stunning. The staff were marvelous. And then home :-(. We have been to Botswana a number of times and certainly enjoyed the rich game and natural world of Botswana. Thanks, Marcelo, Peter and Carol King

Their exemplary planning

We have always arranged our own travel arrangements and accommodation when holidaying, but found it difficult to do so for Africa. After approaching several agents who pushed us towards the standard group tours which only partially fitted our suggested itinerary, we luckily found Ker & Downey and Emma and Razaan in Capetown. Their exemplary planning and service allowed us to spend an unforgettable month in Botswana, Tanzania and Zanzibar. Accommodation was excellent, transfers were allways on time and 100 % reliable, and most imprtantly we experienced a wide range of different country, from delta to desert to rainforest to open plains and savanna. Due to this our interaction with animals, birds, the local people and the environment in general, was nothing short of amazing! Thanks again to Emma and Razaan, BEST HOLIDAY EVER!

Viaje Al Fin Del Mundo

I was planning to travel to Patagonia for years but due to heavy work schedule, I had no chance to realize this Patagonia trip until my retirement. I found Across Argentina Travel Agency from internet and a young hard working man Sebastian Southwell worked very hard to fix an itinerary. He offered me a different payment plan that made me pay easily. When I arrived at Buenos Aires, Ms Carolina Simonian took care of me and she always got in touch with me during my 16 days of travel all over Patagonia. Regarding my trip, I was highly satisfied with the selection of Point of Interest, hotels selected were very comfortable and all showed me a high degree of hospitality. Local tours I participated were selected carefully, but I like to point out one point regarding with local tours, guides were good but they were giving information in Spanish longer than English then English speaking guests needed to ask questions to clarify subjects, this to be corrected. As a final words Across Argentina and their talented employees, Carolina and Sebastian made this trip ONCE IN A LIFETIME. I would like to thank Across Argentina and employees so much

Great trip organised by the team!

Great trip organised by the team! From the first moment, the team has been very responsive to our emails and the way the tour was setup exceeded our expectations. The help from the experience manager was very crucial in many circumstances (best example was that she organised to have a purse delivered from Argentina to Chile!!). All in all totally recommend Across South America for your next trip to Latin America!

Across South America were first class

Across South America were first class as they really listened to what we wanted and put together a truly wonderful trip across Argentina and Chile. This was no mean feat as our ‘wants’ included tango lessons. hiking. fly fishing and kayaking. The accommodation found for us was just perfect and we had the most amazing time. It was just so relaxing to know that everything was being handled for us.

It's been a few months since we returned from an amazing tour of India. Thanks to Nutan and the folks at Travel Local/Story of India our trip was spectacular. Our first rate tour guides were friendly and knowledgeable about the sites we saw. The company even helped us when travel got tricky, and we needed to change from a train to car ride. It was a great experience from planning just the right places to visit beforehand, to the time in the country. I would recommend Travel Local to all my friends, it was a great experience. Thank you TravelLocal!

Great care and service from Agama Tours and Safaris. From first mail communication was fast and helpful. Kabalo and Lara helped customized our perfect private safari in Tanzania. 8 days including Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Serengeti and Ngorongoro. The lodges, tent camps, and transportation were all excellent. We are still in disbelief to how amazing our guide was, Emanuel. A professional animal finder, knowledgable, passionate and above all, wonderful friend we have made. I would recommend to anyone traveling to Tanzania!

I travelled to Namibia in the dry season (October). The weather was very, very hot on a couple of days the temp reached 100+. The schedule was gruelling - up 05:00/06:00 every morning but I enjoyed every minute of it. Every day brought a new experience. There were a couple of long travel days but the truck was reasonably comfortable, stocked with cold drinks and guide books plus plenty of photo/toiler stops along the way.
The highlights of the trip for me were Etosha National Park, Carnivore Cheetah reserve and climbing Dune 45. The first camp in Etosha had a fabulous watering hole which attracted a variety of animals. It was very addictive watching the coming and goings of the animals!! At the Cheetah reserve we managed to get within a distance of 20ft from the Cheetahs what a fabulous experience.

Our group leader was Ronney, he was a very experienced guide and full of enthusiasm. The cook Jonah prepared a variety of great food for every meal and of course not to forget Ruben who erected/dismantled our tents every time we moved to another site. All great guys. Jonah even managed to cook a lovely meal one evening during a thunder storm on the Waterburg Plateau.

Take high factor sun cream and even higher factor for face and neck. I only took South African Rand as it is widely accepted in Namibia. If you are a vegetarian then there is not much choice on the menu when eating out. Bring some mixed nuts/seeds as I did. The electricity is unique to Sth Africa/Namibia but our truck had a variety of extension leads including once with an English plug. I'd no problems charging batteries/phone.

I was very impressed by Namibia. Campers are certainly very well catered for. Almost all of the camp sites had hot water, flush toilets, toilet rolls and even public toilets on the whole were very clean. Supermarkets were well stocked. The night game in Etosha was fab as the moon was shining and we saw a lot of drama at one watering hole. It is definitely the place to buy tanzanite jewellery. Hiking boots are not a necessity; a pair of trainers & a pair of sandals are all the foot ware you need. I took a 3/4 season sleeping bag and most nights ended up sleeping in the liner instead. A couple of evenings did need to wear a fleece. If planning on taking a Dolphin cruise out of Walvis Bay wrap up well as it is freezing!!
It was a fabulous trip and enjoyed every minute of it. Don't hesitate - go for it!!

Choosing a Birding Tour Company

When selecting a tour company for your next birding venture, it’s important to determine what you want to get out of your trip. Are you looking for a trip that is 100% focused on birding - where you can improve your spotting and photography skills? Or are you hoping for a slightly more well rounded travel experience, with a day or two dedicated to birding activities?

Most birding tour companies will satisfy the first kind of traveler nicely - and are perfectly open to novice birders and experienced birders. There is a strong sense of camaraderie within the birding community, and travelers often make lifelong friends on tours.

But there is also a learning curve - and while the support network is strong, birding specific tours are definitely best suited to those who want to learn about and talk birding each day. Also remember that most birding tour companies will be smaller groups - allowing for more opportunities to view the animals and access more remote locations.

If you are looking to just get your feet wet with birding, but also other wildlife spotting and photography, a nature tour or safari that features expert wildlife guides and photographers might be a better fit.
