Blue Lagoon Attractions & Landmarks Guide

Iceland’s Blue Lagoon

Although usually confused with the many hot springs and thermal pools in Iceland, the Blue Lagoon is actually not a natural phenomenon. The Lagoon is instead manmade, and heated by the geothermal power plant just adjacent to the water. Runoff from this plant, which creates energy from the volcanic activity in the area, is directed into the lagoon, and this is what makes the water warm.

Effects of the Blue Lagoon

With this being said, the pool is still clean and very safe to swim in -- in fact, many firmly believe that the mud and water in the pool is good for your skin. This is because the water is rich in vitamins, minerals, and algae.

The combination fresh and seawater means the Lagoon has a high content of silica within it, which protects your skin. The silica also has an antibacterial effect. In fact, there is even some medical tourism to the Lagoon amongst those with arthritis and chronic pain, who say the water helps their symptoms.

In order to keep this water clean, however, every visitor is required to rinse off before entering the lagoon.

What to Know

  • For general admission in the Blue Lagoons, a regular adult ticket costs about $92 US Dollars. A premium ticket will cost you about $120, and will include a second drink, a bathrobe and slippers, and restaurant reservation. If you really want a luxurious experience, you can also book a retreat spa experience for $352. This gives you access to the very luxurious Retreat Spa for four hours, a private changing rome, and the spa restaurant.
  • The Blue Lagoon is open from 8am to 11pm, with shorter hours on certain holidays such as Christmas. One the biggest decisions you will have to make when planning your visit is whether or not you want to come at night, which can be a spectacular experience
  • Many people advise travelers to the Lagoon to pack some leave-in conditioner if you plan to dunk your head, since the Lagoon is notorious for leaving your hair coated in minerals and feeling stiff and tangled for several days. This will not leave permanent damage, however, and besides the weird appearance, the Lagoon water isn’t actually bad for your hair.
  • Your ticket includes a drink at the swim-to drink bar in the lagoon, however, as the Lagoon is a family friendly location, you will be cut off after buying 3 alcoholic drinks.
  • If you wear contact lenses, bring a pair of glasses, or without eyewear in the lagoon. If silica gets in your ocntacts, it can be very painful. On a similar note, bring sunglasses if you visit during the day, the water reflecting off the lagoon can make it very bright!
