What travelers are saying

"Our family of four, including two adult children, took the Bicycling: Day Trips to Paradise in Canada. This trip is entirely outsourced to the owners of the inn, there are no Road Scholar employees involved in the trip. Two of us have taken bicycle trips all over the world and the bicycling component of this trip was disorganized, haphazard and almost unsafe. We all filled out forms giving details regarding our bicycle fitting months before the trip. On the first day, the leader Stephen, went around the room and asked the same questions and said everyone would get fitted in the morning before we began the first ride. The morning brought a rack of bikes, all different types in various levels of readiness. There were road bikes, hybrid bikes, mountain bikes and e-bikes. The rides were all on paved surfaces and the mountain bikes were heavy and the additional suspension added weight. The bike I received had rust on the chain and rear sprocket. When I asked about it, was told they were waiting for another van to show up with tools and equipment. Once it arrived, they gave me the lubricant to spray on the rust. My wife’s bike would not shift into the high gear on the front sprocket. Instead of adjusting the derailleur, they suggested spraying it with lubricant. Our one son is over six feet and needed a larger frame bike, even though he detailed it in the bike form months ago, there was no bike to fit him. One of the guides, then went home and brought a larger bike that was a full suspension mountain bike for him. The bike was very heavy, hard to control on the road and he felt unsafe. After two days, one of the guides convinced Stephen that they could adjust a hybrid bike to fit him. Clearly there was no work done to prepare the bikes for the trip. Many of the bikes needed adjusting and all needed lubricant to function easily. For every day, there was a tray of snacks placed out for us to take along the ride. None of the bikes had any baskets or attached bags, so if you didn’t bring a small day pack, there was no way to carry the snacks. For lunch on the rides, they brought exactly one sandwich for each rider. Since most of us get hungry while doing a day of exercise, it would have been helpful to have a few extras. On one day, they ran out of sandwiches and one of the leaders that were riding with us did not get lunch. Do NOT take this trip if you are expecting it to be a bicycling trip. We have used VBT and Discovery Bicycle Tours many times over the past 25 years and they are excellent bike tour companies. Lastly, after sharing these details with Road Scholar after the trip, their response was weak at best. After doing the full reviews and having to call them, their response was to give us $200 credit after spending $8000 on this trip. Not only was that insulting, they assumed that I would take another trip with their organization."

What travelers are saying

"We booked a National Geographic expedition Holland and Belgium by River. The promotional literature promised a 14-day deposit refund window. The “invoice” was marked “non-refundable” deposit. We completed the National Geographic Traveler Information. About 8 days later we received the “Travel Agreement” to be signed. We both approved and signed the National Geographic documents. A Cruise Line Travel agreement was enclosed but had no signature line. This document contained language which was unacceptable. We submitted the signed NatGeo documents. The following day we canceled the trip due to the unacceptable Cruise Line language. Cancellation was made 12 days after booking and no deposit was returned. We were told on the phone that the refund deadline was triggered by the 14 day window OR signatures on the Travel Agreement which ever came first. This was NEW information. To date, we have received NO refund of our $1000. We cancelled our trip within the advertised 14 day window."

What travelers are saying

"I was scammed by this jacadatravel.com. They have stolen my money 40000USD in the name of investment. They asked me to deposit money at website called www.jacadatravel.com. I have submitted my money 40000USDT in the cryptocurrency. Then later they shifted to a new website called www.jacadatravel.uk. They told me that they have a new platform where I can login my own account. After that they again started asking for money around 28000USDT but I refused to give. Asked them to return my money but they refused to return my money. I tried to contact them on various social networking websites like facebook, Instagram, and Linkedin but they blocked me. On LinkedIn, I contacted Alex Malcolm; he also blocked me immediately. Then customer care at Telegram contacted me saying like Alex Malcolm is Merchant. They refused to return any money. They have opened jacada customer care at Telegram. where they will guide you how to pay and how much we need to pay. I will attach a screenshot of the evidence. In this whole process Alex Malcolm is involved. All the money is with Alex only. Thank you"

Brazil Tour Selection Trips

  • It makes sense to take a tour or small-ship river cruise to Brazil. Distances are vast, natural areas like the Amazon and the Pantanal are remote, and the cities can be plagued with petty thefts – less likely to occur if you’re in a group.
  • If you plan to travel to Brazil for Carnaval or any special event, be sure to book your tour well in advance – a year or more, if possible.
  • If you can't find accomodation for Carnaval in Rio de Janeiro, consider a tour that includes attending the Carnaval in Salvador, capital of the state of Bahia along the Atlantic north of Rio. The parade here isn't as well known, but still spectacular!
  • Similarly, Copacabana may be more famous, but the beaches of Jericoacoara, a fishing village north of Rio, are beautiful, less crowded, and known as windsurfing meccas.
  • Remember that Brazilians speak Portuguese, not Spanish like most of the rest of South America.
  • Even if you’re a vegetarian, there’s no need to skip a meal at one of Brazil’s famous churrascarias, where multiple courses of meat are served. These places are also know for their ample salad and vegetable courses, and of course the incredible desserts!

Additional details

Best time to visit Brazil

The timing of your trip will largely depend on what you plan to do. It’s important to pay attention to the amount of rain, the temperature, and when the festivals are to ensure your expectations are met:

Touring the Amazon and Pantanal in Brazil

If you are planning an Amazon adventure, know that the rainy season runs from December to May. That’s all relative though, as heavy rains can occur all year round. To give yourself the best chance of not being stuck in a torrential downpour, plan your Amazon trip after the rainy season in May. June is the best time to see wildlife, as the river is at its highest but the driest season hasn’t arrived yet.

The same goes for the Pantanal. The rainy season is between February and April. It is best to avoid the time between February and March, when the rains are relentless. The Pantanal sees its hottest temperatures in the summer, December to February, and hotels and hostels often close due to the heat and the mosquitos. The dry season in the winter, May to September, is your best bet for wildlife sightings and comfortable weather.

Bahia and Northern Brazil

If you plan to visit one of the many charming cities in northern Brazil, you will be rewarded with tropical temperatures and humidity. The northern area of Brazil experiences temperatures that linger in the 80’s all year long. The ocean temperatures also stay at a comfortable swimming temperature year-round. The north does experience a rainy season from

Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo

These two cities have pleasant weather all year round. December to February are Brazil’s summer months, when temperatures are in the high 80’s and rain falls often. Even with the precipitation, rain storms tend to come and go quickly, so sunny days are plentiful. February is also the month of Carnival, and Rio is the top destination to celebrate.

Carnival season is incredibly expensive in Rio. Hotels rates can triple and vacancy can be limited. It is recommended that you book lodging a year in advance if you want to be a part of the biggest party in the world.

Spring and autumn in these cities are far more temperate and without the haze of the precipitous summer. Winter temps are still pleasant during the day but drop in the evening, so travelers may be surprised when they need a jacket.

How long should you plan for a tour in Brazil?

If you stick to one region of Brazil, it is totally possible to have an amazing tour in one week. You can take an Amazon River tour, or visit the city of Rio and venture from there to Iguazu Falls in just seven days. These tours do have a quick pace, so if you’re looking for a more in depth look at Brazil, plan for at least a ten day tour. If you want to include different regions in your tour, such as the Amazon and Rio, plan for a tour that is 10-14 days long to avoid feeling rushed
