Itinerary

Day 1: San Pedro to Comunidad Mallku Villa Mar

Transport from your hotel/hostel between 07:00 and 07:30 to the border of Bolivia. You will pass customs on the Chilean side and again on the Bolivian side. Once across the border, you will have some breakfast and board a 4×4 jeep in Hito Cajón (on the border) to begin your salt flats adventure! The sightseeing begins with visits to Laguna Blanca and Laguna Verde, which are at the base of Volcán Licancabur. From there, you will see the Dali Desert (Norte del Salvador de Dali). After, you will visit hot springs and the Morning Sun Geysers (Geisers de Sol de Mañana). The final sight of the day is Colorado Lagoon (Laguna Colorado), which is home to hundreds of flamingos!

Places you’ll visit on Day 1:

White Lagoon (Laguna Blanca)

Green Lagoon (Laguna Verde)

The Dali Desert

Hot springs (not included in the booking – additional $1.000 CLP or 6 Bolivianos)

Morning Sun Geyser (Geiser Sol de Mañana)

Colorada Lagoon (Laguna Colorada)

Tonight’s lodging is in Hostal Villamar (or potentially Uturunku Hostel if you select private accommodation) at 4,000 meters (13,120 feet).

Day 2: Comunidad Mallku Villa Mar to Hostel de Sal Candelaria

After breakfast, you and the group will head to Pinturas Rupestres (Cave Paintings) and the Valley of the Rocks (Valle de las Rocas), where you can see formations such as The Lost City of Italy (Ciudad de Italia Perdida), the World Cup (Copa del Mundo), Camello (Camel), and many others! Next, you’ll visit Laguna Negra (Black Lagoon) that is full of altiplanic fauna, including Tawas (black ducks with yellow faces), Gansos (geese), and native vegetation. In this area, you’ll also visit Laguna Catal (aka Laguna Misteriosa) and Cañon de Catal. After lunch, the group will enjoy the Mirador de la Cascada de Agua Dulce (The Fresh Water Waterfall Lookout Point), from where you can see a valley which is home to many Andean towns that make their livings tending animals such as llamas and alpacas. The day ends with arrival in the community of Villa Candelaria and a night in a hostel made entirely out of salt!

Places you’ll visit on Day 2:

Pinturas Rupestres (Cave Paintings)

Valley of the Rocks (Valle de las Rocas)

Laguna Negra (Black Lagoon)

Laguna Catal aka Laguna Misteriosa (Mysterious Lagoon)

Cañon de Catal (Catal Canyon)

Mirador de la Cascada de Agua Dulce (The Fresh Water Waterfall Lookout Point)

Tonight’s lodging is in Villa Candelaria Salt Hostel.

Day 3: Sunrise on the Uyuni Salt Flats  to Comunidad Mallku Villa Mar

Today begins with a 5:00 am visit to the Isla Incahuasi (an island of coral and giant cacti in the salt flat) to watch the sunrise over the Uyuni Salt Flats. The Uyuni Salt flat is the world’s largest at 10,582 square kilometers (4,086 square miles) and is 3,656 meters (11,995 feet) above sea level. It was formed from transformations between prehistoric lakes and it extraordinarily flat and expansive. After enjoying this once in a lifetime experience, you will visit a hotel made entirely out of blocks of salt (the Hotel de Playa Blanca), the Salt Eyes (Ojos de Sal), and the Montoneras de Sal (Salt Mounds). In the community of Colchani, you will have a chance to see the Artisanal Salt-Making Process. After lunch, you will head to your last attraction of the day – the Uyuni Train Cementary (Cementerio de Trenes). The group will have a break in Uyuni and then head back to Comunidad Mallku Villa Mar. (From here on, it is basically a transfer back to San Pedro, not a tour).

Places you’ll visit on Day 3:

Incahuasi Island ($3.000 CLP entrance not included in tour price)

Uyuni Salt Flats

Hotel de Playa Blanca

Salt Eyes (Ojos de Sal)

Montoneras de Sal (Salt Mounds)

Train Cemetery (Cementerio de Trenes)

Tonight’s lodging is in Hostal Villamar (or potentially Uturunku Hostel if you select private accommodation) at 3,500 meters (11, 500 feet).

Day 4: Villa del Mar to San Pedro de Atacama

At 5:00 am, the group will leave Comunidad Mallku Villa Mar around 05:00am, cross back through the border at Hito Cajon (4 hour drive), and arrive back in San Pedro around 12:00 (noon)!

Please note that the exact itinerary depends heavily on weather and conditions on the salt flats. The following itinerary is subject to change – your final itinerary will be sent to you via email in an attachment.

Absolutely superb trip. I would put this tour up there with the best I have ever done. The scenery is otherworldly and travelling in a small group (a driver, an English-speaking guide and 5 tourists) is perfect.
Would recommend to everyone who considering doing this. Yes, the accommodation is basic, it gets very cold at night (I was there in early October) and there are a couple of very early starts, but it is all part of the adventure!
I only have 2 negative comments:
1. Our guide was in a bad mood on the final day (we had our suspicions as to why this might be, but they were only suspicions, so it wouldn’t be right to mention them here) and was quite rude to the whole group – in particular to the 2 Swiss people, for no reason whatsoever.
2. Our guide insisted on taking the salt flats perspective photos with our phones – because “it is too complicated with cameras”, but this means we got rubbish photos, with either the foreground or the background out of focus. (My advice is to use your camera. Set it on aperture priority and use a high f-stop number – at least 9 – and set your focus to ‘wide’, not ‘centre’. Finally, don’t put the camera too close to whatever is in the foreground and don’t zoom. (OK, maybe he was right – that does sound a bit complicated, but if you do it right, you’ll get amazing photos!)
Finally, I’m glad I’d spent 3 days in San Pedro to acclimatise before doing this tour, as the altitude didn’t affect me at all.
Anyway, book this tour – you won’t regret it.

Amazing guide with an even better trip! For everyone planning on going on this tour, the actual drive/ tour to Bolivia is just as, if not more beautiful than the destination. While each day was jam-packed with different landscapes, the trip from high-altitude volcanoes to gorgeous sunsets over the Bolivian desert made this more than worth it!

Such a unique and amazing experience! Bolivia has so many natural beauties that you must see. Our tour was so organized and the guides helped make the crossings into and out of Bolivia and Chile very easy. Each day had a list of sites that we traveled to and had time to explore, take in, and snap pictures of. We were provided very filling meals during this trip along with some snacks. The sleeping situation in hostels was not bad at all. It does get cold at night, so I definitely recommend bringing a sleeping bag (even with the blankets the hostels provide) which kept me cozy all night. The tour guide was very friendly and kept us informed with some background at each location. It really is amazing how the guides can get around in this area; they’re very knowledgeable. I highly recommend experiencing the sunrise over the salt flats and playing around with perspective after that. Definitely an unforgettable experience!

I thoroughly enjoyed the trip. The accommodation was not as bad as everyone made out single beds 3 or 6 in a room and while the facilities were limited you had paid hot water showers at both sites we slept at.
Nonetheless the trip did feel a little rushed and as our spanish was lacking so too was the information however the beauty was often speechless so that wasn’t too much of an issue

Three of us joined this tour in May 2017… and as a very experienced traveller who’s had the Salt Flats on my bucket list for years I was worried about it not living up to expectations. Boy was I wrong! The landscape was truly stunning, and we never felt like we were in touristy crowds or being rushed around the sights. We had plenty of time at every stop to get photos and soak up the magic, and our driver was truly a friend by the end of the trip!
We were really worried about some of the bad reviews we’d seen online for other companies but found everything through Keteka and their partners to be flawless. Reliable, punctual, friendly and helpful!
Highly recommended if you’re looking for the trip of a lifetime!

Accomodations

1st night in Hostal Villamar

  • In the basic package, rooms and bathrooms are shared
  • There is electricity at all hours (unless there is a power outage)
  • Hot water is available at any time but you must pay 10 Bolivianos to have it turned on (they turn it on with gas) – it lasts about 8-10 minutes. Showers cost 10 Bolivianos regardless of whether you would like hot water or not.
  • If you book private accommodation for the tour, you will either stay in a private room in the same hostel, or in Uturunku Hostel
  • In both, the private rooms are very basic, but have private bathrooms, with hot water included

2nd night in Villa Candelaria Salt Hostel

  • In the basic package, rooms and bathrooms are shared
  • There is electricity at all hours (unless there is a power outage)
  • Hot water is available at any time but you must pay 10 Bolivianos to have it turned on (they turn it on with gas). Showers cost 10 Bolivianos regardless of whether you would like hot water or not.
  • If you book private accommodation for the tour, you will stay in a private room in the same hostel – the room is very basic but it has a private bathroom and hot water is included

3rd night back in Hostal Villamar (the same from the first night)

  • If you are traveling in winter (May-September) temperatures in the desert can go as low as -20 C° / -4 F°, so in these months you’re advised to bring a sleeping bag to use in addition to the bedding provided.
  • In winter, it is also possible that the water might be cut entirely due to extreme cold and there is not much the hostel will be able to do about it at the time, so having a flexible mentality is perhaps the best way to prepare!

Additional Information:

Easy - Trip generally requires some walking on multiple days of the trip over even terrain.
