What travelers are saying

"Our family of four, including two adult children, took the Bicycling: Day Trips to Paradise in Canada. This trip is entirely outsourced to the owners of the inn, there are no Road Scholar employees involved in the trip. Two of us have taken bicycle trips all over the world and the bicycling component of this trip was disorganized, haphazard and almost unsafe. We all filled out forms giving details regarding our bicycle fitting months before the trip. On the first day, the leader Stephen, went around the room and asked the same questions and said everyone would get fitted in the morning before we began the first ride. The morning brought a rack of bikes, all different types in various levels of readiness. There were road bikes, hybrid bikes, mountain bikes and e-bikes. The rides were all on paved surfaces and the mountain bikes were heavy and the additional suspension added weight. The bike I received had rust on the chain and rear sprocket. When I asked about it, was told they were waiting for another van to show up with tools and equipment. Once it arrived, they gave me the lubricant to spray on the rust. My wife’s bike would not shift into the high gear on the front sprocket. Instead of adjusting the derailleur, they suggested spraying it with lubricant. Our one son is over six feet and needed a larger frame bike, even though he detailed it in the bike form months ago, there was no bike to fit him. One of the guides, then went home and brought a larger bike that was a full suspension mountain bike for him. The bike was very heavy, hard to control on the road and he felt unsafe. After two days, one of the guides convinced Stephen that they could adjust a hybrid bike to fit him. Clearly there was no work done to prepare the bikes for the trip. Many of the bikes needed adjusting and all needed lubricant to function easily. For every day, there was a tray of snacks placed out for us to take along the ride. None of the bikes had any baskets or attached bags, so if you didn’t bring a small day pack, there was no way to carry the snacks. For lunch on the rides, they brought exactly one sandwich for each rider. Since most of us get hungry while doing a day of exercise, it would have been helpful to have a few extras. On one day, they ran out of sandwiches and one of the leaders that were riding with us did not get lunch. Do NOT take this trip if you are expecting it to be a bicycling trip. We have used VBT and Discovery Bicycle Tours many times over the past 25 years and they are excellent bike tour companies. Lastly, after sharing these details with Road Scholar after the trip, their response was weak at best. After doing the full reviews and having to call them, their response was to give us $200 credit after spending $8000 on this trip. Not only was that insulting, they assumed that I would take another trip with their organization."

What travelers are saying

"We've taken over 10 group tours using Cosmos and Gate1. This trip last month, 9000 was not very good. -During booking, incorrect information was given about airport-hotel transfers -The whispers (listening devices) didn't work from the get-go, so no whispers were used during the 13 day trip. - Porters are no longer hired to bring your luggage to and from your room. (Very elderly had to handle their own luggage. Our friends had to help many of them.) -A few days into the trip one couple left. At the end of the trip we found out they had covid. Cosmos did not let us know; a few people weren't feeling well and two of our friends then tested positive. -One hotel was awful and not even up to "budget" standards -Many of the stops had castles, churches... but were not included, so be sure to count that in when pricing.  don't plan to use Cosmos ever again. Gate1 is the best in my opinion. When my husband's passport was stolen, they assigned someone to go with him to the embassy, translate, etc...It was above and beyond what we expected  "

What travelers are saying

"This was out first trip with KE and part of a longer stay in China. We had a fantastic time and the trek was the highlight of our extended holiday. The scenery was stunning and enhanced by the heavy snow fall we got at second camp. Whilst unexpected, the tour leader was able to modify our schedule and we completed the trek by staying at the second base camp for an extra night. We had active and passive acclimatisation and didn’t suffer from any altitude sickness. The days were relatively short in terms of walking but that was good as it left time to adjust the schedule when the unexpected happened. Whilst walking poles are listed as recommended, we think they were essential. Also make sure you have a good quality thermal sleeping mat as it is cold at night. The only negative is the use of single use plastic which is common throughout China. In summary a fantastic adventure and the panda bears are very cute too!"

What travelers are saying

"This tour was one of our favorites. The tour leaders (Claudio and Tiziana) were great. The Dolomites and Italian Alps were breathtaking and the bike paths and towns were well chosen to give us a great appreciation of this Alpine countryside. Once out of Venice you really feel like you are in the country with beautiful mountains, alpine chalets and in some areas mostly German speaking residents. The biking was mostly flat with some crazy fun downhill rides. Almost all of the cycling was on bike paths, so very safe and quiet riding. As expected, VBT delivered a great tour with very good accommodations, good food and a really great group of travellers."

What travelers are saying

"We joined the Intrepid “Real Italy Food Tour” and enjoyed it thoroughly. Our tour guide, Micol, was very knowledgeable and provided us with lots of good information. It seems Micol knew many of the staff of the venues we visited, including the pasta making class we attended. Our group of 11 travelers was extremely compatible, which greatly added to the fun and enjoyment."

What travelers are saying

"We spent two wonderful weeks touring several of the best destinations in Portugal & Spain with a group of 16 people. Our guide (Fredy) was from Spain and intimately familiar with the region, including its rich history, attractions, and food/beverages. The tour was well-paced using a combinations of private vehicles (small buses and cabs), trains, and an airplane ride as well as a fair amount of walking to get around these two beautiful countries. We extended our stay in Lisbon to see more attractions and took a side trip to Fatima, Obidos, and Nazare that was also excellent. Would have liked to have a bit more time in a couple of the cities, but we'll just have to plan another trip!"

Dalmatian Coast Tour Selection Trips

Prepare for your journey along the stunning Dalmatian Coast with these practical travel tips to ensure a smooth and memorable experience:
  • With a Mediterranean climate, lightweight clothing and comfortable footwear are essential.
  • Don't forget to bring swimwear, sunscreen, and a hat for beach days.
  • The sun can be intense, especially during summer, so carry a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated throughout the day.
  • Tours tend to fill up fast, so book beforehand to secure your spot and avoid disappointment.
  • Familiarize yourself with local customs and traditions.
  • Croatia uses the Croatian Kuna (HRK), while some places may accept euros. Ensure you have local currency for smaller purchases and tipping.
  • While English is widely spoken in tourist areas, learning a few basic Croatian phrases can enhance your interactions with locals.
  • Keep a list of emergency contacts, including local authorities, your embassy or consulate, and your tour operator, handy in case of unforeseen circumstances.
  • Purchase comprehensive travel insurance to cover medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and other unforeseen events during your Dalmatian Coast vacation.

Additional details

Dalmatian Coast tours are typically cruises. Most trip itineraries include destinations on the coast of Croatia, the islands, and some inland sites. The coast is rich with historic cities and bustling industries, all of which are highlighted on the tours.

Highlights of a Dalmatian Coast trip will be walking the many historic old towns, taking a wine tour through the famous vineyards of Croatia, and exploring one of Europe’s most beautiful landscapes. The tours are a perfect combination of romance, history, and adventure.

Where is the Dalmatian Coast?

Today, the Dalmatian Coast encompasses the 200-mile stretch of Croatia from Zadar to Dubrovnik. In the past, the region also included other Balkan countries including Montenegro and Bosnia.

Kotor, Montenegro, sits only 56 miles south of Dubrovnik and is in included in many Dalmatian tours. The city shares the Venetian cultural and architectural influences that impacted the cities up and down the Croatian coastline. Tours stop here not only for the city’s historical importance, but also for the amazing mountain scenery of the Bay of Kotor.

Bosnia is also included on many tour itineraries. Historically Bosnia had a large piece of the Dalmatian coast, but war and conflict over the last few hundred years has resulted in Bosnia currently only having 12 miles of coastline. Longer tours include stops in Sarajevo or Mostar, two of Bosnia’s most famous cities. Since Bosnia’s coastline separates Croatia, travelers will need their passport if they are traveling by land between Dubrovnik and Split.

Weather on the Dalmatian Coast

Croatia has one of the best climates in Europe. The Dalmatian Coast in particular is renowned for its year round mild climate. The weather is cooler in the north and significantly warms up the further south you head. Packing sunscreen and a hat is a must, especially during the summer months.

Spring is warm with temperatures between 60-80 degrees and summers are hot and breezy. Autumn is a perfect time to visit because while the temperatures are cooler than summer, the weather is still warm enough to enjoy the beaches. Winter is generally mild, but is rainier than the other seasons and can be colder at night.

When is the best time to travel to the Dalmatian Coast?

The high season lasts from April to October. Tours to the Dalmatian Coast begin to increase around May, with cruises filling up the old towns and ports with travelers. The summer months will be the busiest and most expensive to visit Croatia.

For those wishing to miss the crowds and save some money, going during winter or the shoulder months is a good option. Croatia luckily has mild weather throughout the year so visiting during the fall, or even winter, is still a good choice. However, the winter will be rainier and cooler than the summer months so pack extra layers.

Who will enjoy a Dalmatian Coast Tour

Dalmatian Coast guided tours and cruises are for the true romantics at heart. Whether you enjoy history, culture or food & wine you can find whatever you like throughout the coast.

For the history lovers, you will enjoy the old towns in each of the coastal cities. Each old town has a unique story with some cities dating back to prehistoric times. The coastal towns are also one of the best spots to see Italian and Roman architecture outside of Italy.

Wine enthusiasts will enjoy the vibrant Croatian wine culture. Many cruises will include tours of the wine regions around Split and on the island of Hvar. White wine lovers in particular will really enjoy the vineyards around Split where it is believed zinfandel originated.

The active traveler will have a full schedule. With activities including hiking, kayaking, bike riding, and walking tours there will be something for even the most active of visitor.

A tour to the Dalmatian Coast is full of activity. The tours are targeted to travelers looking to get out and explore the cities and regions of Dalmatia. Visitors with disabilities may have issues in the old towns with the uneven streets, getting off and on the ferries, or the more active itineraries. Researching each itinerary will help you plan for any foreseeable difficulties.

Common tour lengths

Most guided tours on the Dalmatian coast last between 12-15 days. These tours typically include not only Croatia, but other Balkan countries as well. Frequenters to Dalmatian Coast itineraries are Bosnia, Slovenia, and Montenegro. Many of these tours start their trips in one of the other Balkan countries before arriving in Croatia, while other tours include stops or day trips into these countries.

If the trip only includes Croatia, then the tour typically lasts eight days. These tours are usually between Split and Dubrovnik and include a stop to Zadar in the north. Most of these tours are on cruise ships or yachts to reach all of the cities within the shorter time frame.

Dalmatian Coast Transportation

Dalmatian guided tours will typically use cruise ships or yachts to get from city to city. Since Croatia has traditionally been a seafaring country, most of the sites on a Dalmatian Coast route will be on the coast.

Smaller ferries or boats may be needed to reach the smaller islands in the Dalmatian archipelago. However, when the tour is on land, buses will be used to visit attractions farther inland, like Krka National Park.
