What travelers are saying

"This trip is unbelievably fantastic. Two of the best rides of my life, were on this tour. The guides were very good and this was just the start, when we met them, at the hotel in Cortina. Cortina was the site of the 1956 Olympics, and is a small pretty village. Nothing was open the two nights we were there, so probably bad timing. Hotel was a typical ski village hotel, good Italian/German food, and very comfortable. Second day of biking was up an old railroad spur that is now a ski trail about 15-20 K up to a mountain pass called Cimabanche Pass, which is beautiful. We rode up in a snow storm, then rain, then finally clear skies. This was the number two best ride of my life. Starting out from the hotel in Cortina, up the old spur, through single track bike trails, past babbling brooks, up to this fabulous mountain pass. This is now where the fun starts. Mostly downhill on paved roads very little traffic, at good speeds, through the most spectacular valleys you would ever see on a bike ride. Breathtaking. It had to end back at the hotel for a big dinner. The best ride of my life was the last biking day out of Merano. We were bused up 1500 K, about 85-90 miles to Lake Resia, high up in the Dolomites, then rode around the lake, down, back to Merano. High mountain peaks, many valleys, small towns, many grape growing farms, scenery, the best, and cool brisk weather. This was truly a great bike tour, one I will never forget. The trip is rated easy, but maybe easy/moderate is closer. The Hotel in Merano is excellent, middle of old town, modern, has a thermal bath, rooms were very good. The town of Merano is a must see if in the area, small, beneath the high mountains of the Dolomites, good restaurants, lots of tourists."

What travelers are saying

"My wife and I did the six day Lofoten Islands tour offered by 50 Degrees North. The tour is simple, they provided us a rental car, accommodations for two nights each at three Rorbuer hotels scattered across the islands, and a couple of scheduled day tours. Most of the time, we were on our own to see the islands at our own pace. The islands are stunningly beautiful, and the tour planning made our travels hassle free. They even scheduled lunch for us at an organic goat farm, which may sound a little strange for a vacation like this, but that is only because you haven't tasted the cheese. (Best lunch ever!) At our request, they altered the tour slightly so that we could begin the tour in Svolvaer and end it six days later at the airport in Leknes. We can't imagine a more complete tour of the islands in six short days."

Visits

Copenhagen, Oslo, Scandinavia, Trondheim

Highlights

  • Spend three nights in the long-adored Lofoten Islands, a patchwork of fishing villages. Head out to the narrow Trollfjord for a chance to see sea eagles and take in some of the most breathtaking scenery.
  • Take a ferry to Vrango Island, a stunning fishing town in the Gothenburg Archipelago, and discover this rocky nature haven by kayak (summer months only).
  • Hop on an e-bike in Tromso, and learn about life hundreds of kilometres north of the Arctic Circle, where the arts and culture scene is thriving despite its isolated, northerly location.
  • Join a local guide and cafe-hop your way around Alingsas, a town known as the Capital of Fika (Swedish cafe and food culture). Learn of the local love affair with coffee, discover the story behind the cafe culture and, of course, treat your tastebuds to sweet Swedish delicacies.
  • Visit Trondheim, which translates as 'a good place to live', stroll past the colourful wooden storehouses flanking the river, ride the northernmost tram and enjoy a forest walk and picnic just like the locals do.

What travelers are saying

"We joined the Intrepid “Real Italy Food Tour” and enjoyed it thoroughly. Our tour guide, Micol, was very knowledgeable and provided us with lots of good information. It seems Micol knew many of the staff of the venues we visited, including the pasta making class we attended. Our group of 11 travelers was extremely compatible, which greatly added to the fun and enjoyment."

Denmark Tour Selection Trips

  • Biking is a way of life in Copenhagen and the bike "highways" get busy. Be sure to stay to the right if you cycle slower than traffic, and remember to be courteous of the Danes going about their commutes!
  • Remember that Copenhagen experiences the midnight sun in the summer and limited sunlight during the winter. While summer sees the country in full bloom, consider a winter visit for adventure in the far North and the magical Christmas season in Copenhagen.

Additional details

Denmark may be small, but what it lacks in size makes up for in historical triumph and cultural value. With its medieval castles, unspoiled countryside, and exciting attractions, this Scandinavian country is a fairytale destination for any traveler. You will fall in love with the food, become immersed in the Danes “hygge” way of living (that indescribable feeling of cozy contentment from relaxing and sipping that glass of wine with friends), and understand for yourself why Denmark has been voted most liveable city in the world.

When is the Best Time to Visit Denmark?

Summer is a spectacular time to visit Denmark, specifically the months of May through August  when the temperature is warm, days are at their longest, and the countryside is in full bloom. Museums and attractions will be open longer because the sun sets at a later time. You can also enjoy more outdoor travel like kayaking and biking without having to brave the freezing cold.

If you are traveling for the holidays and are looking for a winter wonderland feel, then Denmark is the place to be. This country absolutely loves Christmas. Towns are decked out in decorations throughout November and December and parties are organised months in advance.

If you're there during the first day of November, also known as J Day, bars, pubs and discos will be jam-packed with partiers in elf costumes and Santa hats. On this day at precisely 8:49 PM, the famous brewing company Tuborg releases its annual Christmas beer, known as julebryg,  and the holiday season officially begins.

What to Wear When Visiting Denmark

Depending on what time of year you visit, your attire will vary. Although, no matter what season it is, Denmark's weather can be extremely unpredictable. During summer, the climate is mild so be prepared to layer when the clouds roll in and the sun disappears. Always pack an umbrella and rainboots or waterproof shoes just in case.

For summer, pack active wear for riding bikes and other outdoor activities. Bring light layers like tank tops and sweatshirts. Also include dressy clothes for the lovely restaurants and bars that you visit at night.

During winter you will need heavy coats, beanies, scarves, and gloves. Pack warm layers of clothes and long sleeved cotton or wool tops. It rains heavily during this season and sometimes Denmark will experience snowfall so pack accordingly.

If you forget to pack items do not fret, Denmark is one of the hottest design nations in the world. Strøget, famous for its shopping, is one Europe's longest pedestrian streets. Stretching almost a mile long, it consists of low to high end shops with something for everyone.

Common Countries Also Visited on Denmark Tours:

Denmark is included as one of the four countries that make up Scandinavia, therefore it is common that itineraries will include visits to them as well:

  1. Sweden: Outdoor activities are big in Sweden due to its lush green space. Activities like hiking, biking, cycling, and kayaking are very popular amongst the Swedes. With its’ archipelagos and Northern Lights, Sweden truly is a mystical Nordic destination.

  2. Norway: Beautiful fjords and a sun that doesn't set all summer, known as the “midnight sun”, makes Norway a picture perfect getaway. You will have much more time to visit museums and take part in Norwegian attractions due to the longer days.

  3. Finland: A land of placid lakes, ski resorts, and wild nature to explore. You will meet some of the kindest people here and experience adventure beyond belief.

  4. Iceland: Although Iceland is not considered part of Scandinavia, it is very close geographically and the culture and history are also very similar to that of other scandinavian countries, so you may travel here as well. The lava fields, geysers, volcanoes, hot springs, and giant glaciers make Iceland a remarkable destination.
