Dublin is one of the most visited cities in Ireland, with a long historic and literary legacy. Most Ireland tours feature a visit here, where you’ll enjoy lively music, friendly locals, and of course visiting not one but two locations responsible for some of the world’s most popular libations.
Things to Do in Dublin
- Visit Trinity College. Walk around this beautiful and ancient university, founded in 1592 by Queen Elizabeth. Your tour guide will likely explain the history behind this university (The name “Trinity College” and “University of Dublin” are interchangeable as no other colleges were ever built), and you will have the chance to view some of the college’s treasures, such as the Book of Kells, which is always on display.
- Glasnevin Cemetery Museum. If you’re a fan of Celtic crosses, this spot is for you. But actually, this graveyard, filled with famous Irish political figures and people, is a great place for your tour guide to delve into Ireland’s complex and dramatic political past, and talk about Ireland's history.
- The National Museum of Ireland. This free museum is a top notch way to answer any of the remaining questions you have about Dublin. The museum itself is broken into different buildings, depending on if it houses archaeological, art, or natural history exhibits.
- Guinness Storehouse Tours. Perhaps the #1 tourist attraction in all of Dublin is visiting the Guinness factory. On this tour, you will learn how Guinness is made, and about the Guinness family and the history of their world-renowned beer. At the end of your tour, you can also enjoy a pint of the classic Irish draught.
- Walk the Ha’penny Bridge. This unique white pedestrian bridge gets its name from the original toll it cost to cross it, a half penny. Today, the cute bridge is a symbol of Dublin and a must-see for tourists in the area.
- Explore Phoenix Park. If your tour is confined within Dublin but you’re craving a little bit of that Irish greenery, head down to Phoenix Park, which is only 2 miles outside of city center. This 1,700 acre park has tons of attractions, including the Dublin Zoo, and is also a great place to relax, have a picnic, and get a taste of the Irish countryside.
- National Botanical Gardens of Ireland. If you want to combine relaxing in the outdoors and learning, take a trip to Dublin’s beautiful botanical gardens. You’ll be able to walk through the impress glass houses, and also see all the different kinds of plants the Irish have been able to cultivate.
Dublin Castle Tours
One of the primary attractions in all of Dublin, the Dublin Castle is one of the most important historical buildings in the city. For hundreds of year (from 1204 until 1922), this castle was the site of British rule in Ireland.
It was built by the famous King John of England as a fortress on top of an ancient viking settlement, but slowly developed into a much cozier and extravagant building. In 1922, the Viceroy of Ireland passed the castle on to the current government, which still inhabits and uses the space.
The castle is where the city gets its name. In the castle gardens is a black pool, or a “Dubh Linn” in Irish Gaelic, for which the castle, and by extension the city, is named. Today, the castle houses an impressive collection of art and antiques, which you’ll be able to see on your tour of it. Be sure to check the Dublin Castle’s website to see what temporary exhibitions are currently on display.
The castle is open from 9:45am until 4:45pm everyday, and it only takes approximately 70 minutes to tour, which means chances are good your guide will find a way to insert the Dublin Castle into your tour.
Dublin Sightseeing Tours
While there are tons of activities and attractions to do in Dublin, one of the reasons the city is one of the most popular to visit in Ireland is because there also tons of things to do just outside of it. On a sightseeing tour of Dublin, you are sure to leave the city center at least once to see some of the famous nearby natural features.
- Go on a Game of Thrones Tour. If you don’t already know, a lot of the hit HBO show Game of Thrones was filmed in Ireland, and particularly in areas around Dublin. On a Game of Thrones tour from Dublin, you’ll get to trek through the Northern Irish landscape, and see Winterfell, the Iron Islands, and the Old Castle Ward in real life!
- Drive the Giant’s Causeway. The Giant’s Causeway is a series of rocky outcroppings on the Irish coast, but unlike anywhere else on the planet, the basalt stones jut from the earth in unique, hexagonal columns. Some features of the Causeway include the Giant’s Foot -- a massive stone in the shape of boot, said said to be the shoe of Finn McCool as he fled the Giant Benandonner. Another famous feature of the Causeway is the Wishing Chair, a perfectly shaped throne, on which only women used to be allowed to sit!
- See the Cliffs of Moher. The Cliffs of Moher provide some of the most breathtaking views in Ireland, with the raging Atlantic beating at the sea jagged cliffs. Not only do the cliffs provide amazing views, some of the best birdwatching in Ireland can be done at these cliffs, where puffins, razorbills, and kittiwakes are common sights. Make sure not to get too close to the edge -- it can get very windy!
- Walk through the Wicklow Mountains. This national park is just outside of Dublin, and is a great way to explore the Irish countryside for a day on your larger guided tour of Ireland. Wicklow is known for its stunning mountain and lake views, and receives about a million visitors each year. One popular activity is hillwalking and exploring the mountain bogs.
