Classic Ecuador Itineraries

Ecuador in 1 Week

Although Ecuador is a small country, it’s best to focus your efforts if you only have one week to explore. One common route is to spend a few days exploring the Amazon region, followed by some Andean mountain sights.

Day 1-2, Quito: Begin in Quito, the country’s capital. Here you will be introduced to the colonial history of Ecuador, as well as get the famous photo op on the Equator line.

Day 3, Banos: This mountain town is a great place for horseback riding and mountain biking, and experiencing ancient Andean life. After a long day, soak in the towns nearby natural hot springs.

Day 4-5, Tena Region: The perfect introduction to the mysterious and beautiful Ecuadorian Amazon. This region is not only one of the most beautiful, it’s also one of the most adventurous - prepare for some serious adrenaline pumping! Here you may also have the opportunity to homestay with a local Quichua family.

Day 6, Otavalo: The town famous for having the largest indigenous market in Ecuador. Stroll through countless stalls in a maze of colorful fabrics, and learn about traditional craft making from locals.

Ecuador & The Galápagos in 2 Weeks

Tours to the Galapagos typically focus only on the islands, which are often thought of very separate from mainland Ecuador. Travelers who have around two weeks can spend enough time exploring the islands as well as visiting some of the main sites in Ecuador.

Day 1, Quito: Start your tour in Quito, where you’ll learn about Ecuador’s extensive colonial and native histories. Visit the famous Equator line for a fun photo-op.

Day 2, Otavalo: Head to Otavalo to experience the largest indigenous market in Ecuador. Stroll through the dizzying maze of stalls at your leisure, browsing impeccable handmade crafts and brightly colored fabrics.

Day 3-4, Avenue of the Volcanos: Take a mini Andes region tour through the Avenue of the Volcanos route. You might visit Cotopaxi National Park on your way to Banos, where you’ll get a small taste of the Amazon.

Day 5-6, Ecuadorian Amazon: Experience the most biodiverse rainforest in the world as you explore the incredible Ecuadorian Amazon. Stay overnight in a classic ecolodge and take canoe trips along the river for a chance to spot the many unique and rare species of the area.

Day 7, Devil’s Nose Train: Enjoy this thrilling railway ride down steep mountainsides, taking in the stunning Andean scenery. Continue on to Guayaquil, the famous port city from which you’ll transfer to the Galapagos.

Day 8, Santa Cruz Island: Fly to the Galapagos and arrive at Santa Cruz Island for your first taste of this remarkable region. Santa Cruz is one of the best islands for observing the Giant Tortoises for which the islands are named, and you’ll also have a chance to visit the Charles Darwin Research Center.

Day 9, Isabela Island: The largest island on the Galapagos is where you’ll get to do a lot of hiking among other worldly landscapes.

Day 10, San Cristobal Island: Visit where Darwin first set foot on the Galapagos islands in 1835. Go snorkeling among sea lions, tropical fish, and iguanas for one of the most spectacular experiences.

Day 11 - 13, Galapagos: Continue exploring the Galapagos and all the incredible wildlife there is to see. On this day, spend more time in Puerto Ayora, where you can relax and enjoy nice meals and fun outdoor bars. Do more hiking and photography tours to capture the incredible wildlife, known for their lack of fear around humans.

Day 14, Guayaquil: Arrive back on the mainland through one of the South America’s most important ports in Guayaquil the “pearl of the pacific”.

2 Amazing weeks in Ecuador August 2017

Ecuador Adventure & Highlights | Mágico Ecuador

When I arrived in Quito I had 3 options for my trips and I found out Latin Adventures the best.
They have Tours in the different areas of Ecuador ( Volcanos, The mountains, Jungle, Hot springs, the beach, etc....
I'm very thankful to these guys because they helped me a lot planning all my schedule for 2 weeks.
They were always on time, good places and prices, good cars, tasty meals, very nice staff, etc.

I highly recommended this Agency in the Old Town Quito, go to Ecuador and enjoy it.

Incredible experience with wonderful guides and breath-taking scenery. August 2017

Highlights of the Andes | Otavalo Market & Surroundings

At first I was unsure about doing a tour here in Ecuador, but after my experience with Latin Adventures I can´t believe I hesitated! This is easily one of the best tours I´ve had the pleasure of doing. The town of Otavalo is lively and very pretty. There are indigenous handicrafts in every corner, all beautifully made. The highlight of this tour was La Laguna Cuicocha. One of the most beautiful landscapes I´ve experienced without a doubt. The hike around the lagoon is not difficult, just a little long. Absolutely worth it though for the views and the wildlife.

I highly recommended anyone considering doing a tour to go through Latin Adventures. They were kind, professional, and always willing to go the extra mile.

Galapagos: In Darwin's Footsteps (2019)

The trip had much to live upto-I'd wanted to visit the Galapagos since first learning of Darwin's time spent there. The trip more than fulfilled hopes. When we booked I hadn't realised that we would be there at about the same time of year as Darwin's visit had been back in 1835!
Many highlights!Mostly related to  wildlife but also scenery & geology.Perhaps watching a blue footed booby dive all of one metre away from me.Perhaps snorkelling with a turtle-but then what about the sea lions?Perhaps observing frigate birds washing in fresh water & then shaking themselves dry in mid-air.Maybe seeing the sunrise after camping on the volcano rim- but then what about the giant rays leaping clean out of the ocean and somersaulting?

Our leader was excellent-very helpful, patient & a good sense of humour.

Although the Galapagos sit astride the equator, the surrounding ocean can be cool as a result of the Humbolt current flowing north from the Antarctic. So consider taking a wetsuit-though these can be hired locally. It was also cool enough camping on Sierra Negra 1490m to be glad of warm sweaters & anoraks.

In Darwin's Footsteps- what Darwin missed August 2016

Galapagos: In Darwin's Footsteps (2019)

This was a bit of a pilmigrage for me. Working in environmental policy, the theory of evolution informs my work. And I relate to Darwin's seasickness and loved his diary of his voyages. So what is it that drawn missed? In all his theories, treatises, diaries etc, what he did not tell us was how much fun it is to snorkel with sea lions!
My natural selection is swimming with sea lions. Life is better with sea lions.
Swimming with sea lions! Not a doubt in the world. I

Our leader Fabian was great. Made sure we were safe and optimised our experience.

Go snorkelling at every opportunity.

The wild life is amazing! Enjoy it.

Galapagos: In Darwin's Footsteps (2019)

A wonderful trip that came up to all my expectations.  I chose this trip as I wanted to be land based and it gives you more time for exploration in places that sea based trips will not visit.
Swimming with sea lions and other creatures, walking to the fumaroles on Volcan Azul and generally getting so close to the wildlife

Fabian was a very conscientious, dedicated and informed leader with a fantastic sense of humour.

Do take some sea sickness pills even though Fabian did not recommend them as they can make you drowsy. Some of our group wished they had taken them. Previous reports recommended wet suits for November, but we didn't find the sea that cold, though perhaps it can vary from year to year.

If you don't like basic camping often in wet or damp conditions this trip is not for you, but if you can put up with it the 2 days walking round the volcano were fantastic and worth a bit of discomfort.
