Things to do in Fall Foliage - Expert’s guide

1. Boston, Massachusetts

The northeast United States is a top destination for Fall Foliage. For those who also want the opportunity to explore some human history as well as natural history, Fall Foliage tours around Boston are a natural fit.

Boston is also a great stop for taking photographs that have a varied subject. As you move into the countryside, it will be trees upon trees, but with the architecture and city sites in Boston, you can add a different element to your Fall color photographs.

2. Vermont

If it’s a more rural nature experience you’re looking for, consider the quaint farmland and countryside of Vermont. This oft passed over state exhibits some of the most bright and vibrant colors during the fall season. And the quaint towns throughout Vermont are always lovely and welcoming - be sure to taste some local maple syrup!

3. Nova Scotia, Canada

All of Canada showcases brilliant fall colors, and Nova Scotia is one of the best and brightest. Take a drive along the famous “Cabot Trail” for a truly spectacular display. Keep an eye out for the region’s wildlife, especially moose.

4. British Columbia, Canada

The Western coasts and regions of North America don’t get much love for fall foliage, with most of the accolades going to the northeast. However, British Columbia province in Canada could be called a notable exception. In particular, visiting the renowned Butchart Garden in Victoria (one of our Top 10 Gardens in the World!) is a great place to start.

5. Aspen, Colorado

This picturesque town is named for a tree, so you’re already off to a good start for some foliage. In the fall, Aspens turn quickly from their already yellow color to bright orange - but the season is very quick!

You need to be there at just the right time, which is usually the month of September. That’s right, only 1 month - which is why most Fall Foliage tours tend to focus in the East, where the season is longer.

6. Catskills, New York

The Catskills mountains in the southeastern part of New York state are a fabulous location for Fall Foliage. This is also a classic “off the beaten track” United States destination for travelers. Famous for being where the Woodstock festival was held, the Catskills provide ample sightseeing, several hikes, and plenty of wildlife viewing.

7. Bavaria, Germany

This region in the south of Germany is beautiful year round - and quintessentially European, boasting castles dotted throughout the forest - most notably Neuschwanstein Castle. In the Autumn months, this area becomes awash with gorgeous fall colors. September and October are great months to visit Germany for the cool weather, less tourist crowds, and the festivals - especially Oktoberfest!
