What travelers are saying

"A Culture Trip curated trip is a must for anyone burnt out planning their own trips or going to a remote or unfamiliar area. Having a local insider was the highlight of the trip. From the moment we landed to the moment we had to go through security to leave, we were completely taken care of. Our insider gave us great recommendations for restaurants and was very adaptable to any situation that arose."

What travelers are saying

"My partner and I took a private tour with Tilla Tours. We had an amazing tour guide and driver, Karim. We had a limited amount of time, but wanted to see as much of Morocco as we could. Karim helped us manage our time so that we could see as much as possible. We had plenty of stops for pictures. Karim answered any questions we had and explained to us many aspects of Moroccan culture. If you’re unsure about taking this tour, do it. And try to get Karim as your tour guide. He was amazing. I wish we could tip him a million dollars :)"

What travelers are saying

"We've taken over 10 group tours using Cosmos and Gate1. This trip last month, 9000 was not very good. -During booking, incorrect information was given about airport-hotel transfers -The whispers (listening devices) didn't work from the get-go, so no whispers were used during the 13 day trip. - Porters are no longer hired to bring your luggage to and from your room. (Very elderly had to handle their own luggage. Our friends had to help many of them.) -A few days into the trip one couple left. At the end of the trip we found out they had covid. Cosmos did not let us know; a few people weren't feeling well and two of our friends then tested positive. -One hotel was awful and not even up to "budget" standards -Many of the stops had castles, churches... but were not included, so be sure to count that in when pricing.  don't plan to use Cosmos ever again. Gate1 is the best in my opinion. When my husband's passport was stolen, they assigned someone to go with him to the embassy, translate, etc...It was above and beyond what we expected  "

Fez Tour Selection Trips

  • There’s a common saying in Fez that one could live in the medina their whole life and never have to leave. If you want to experience this for yourself, book a tour with accommodation in a riad. A riad is a traditional Moroccan residence, and they are typically found within the Medina. If you stay in one, you won’t ever have to leave either!
  • Make sure to not engorge yourself before you visit a tannery for the first time -- they smell very strongly, and the small mint sprig you will be given may not prevent you from becoming nauseous!
  • If you only packed a limited amount of clothing, wear your most conservative outfits in Fez. It is more conservative than Marrakech, which is more accustomed to tourists. Save your typical Western, or more revealing, clothing for Casablanca. There, Western styles are commonplace, and no one will pay you a second glance.

Additional details

Fez Safety

Like in the other medieval cities of Morocco, you should remain aware of your surroundings and never carry all of your cash and valuables. Petty theft and pickpocketing is your largest concern, though you may be also be harrassed by hawkers and vendors to buy their products (though this is mainly an annoyance, and not a safety concern).

On a guided tour, there is little else to worry about in Fez. Morocco is run by a monarchy Another precaution is to avoid traveling through the medina at night, especially alone. It is much easier to be mugged if you are lost and alone in a series of dark alleys.

What to do in Fez?

  • Learn about the Moroccan royal family and see the exterior of their active Fez palace, Dar el Makhzen. Because it is still in use, you can’t enter inside, but this may be a great stopping point to hear about the Moroccan government, and its transformation into a constitutional monarchy while on a history tour of Fez.
  • Visit Dar Bartha, a former palace that is now a museum. Visit for several hours to familiarize yourself with the museum’s incredible collection of traditional artifacts, from embroidery to woodcarvings. You can also take a walk in the beautiful attached gardens, which include plant life, mosaics, and fountains.
  • Hike Mount Zalagh to view Fez in its entirety, and see the gorgeous olive-dotted hillside that surround the city. This will be a welcome break from the crowds of the city, and a great way to familiarize yourself with the Moroccan countryside.
  • Appreciate Fez’s Jewish history by visiting the Mellah, or the ancient Jewish quarter of the city, to see Jewish architecture and the old synagogue. This fortified district also has a fascinating history, which your tour guide will explain to you.
  • Visit the ancient Chouara Tannery to learn -- and watch -- how leather is made traditionally, and has been for over 1,000 years.
  • Another great hike is to the Merenid Tombs. Climb this hill to see the untouched royal tombs, which are completely authentic as they stand today. The short climb you have to take will be further rewarded by an all-encompassing view of the Fez medina.

Fez Desert Tours

Because of Fez’s proximity to the Sahara, it is one common taking off point to spending some time underneath the desert skies. Seeing the Sahara in person is unlike anything else in the world, and as a result, we highly recommend taking a tour that includes visiting it.

On a Sahara tour, you are likely to sleep under the stars at a desert camp, ride a camel, and learn about the nomadic Berber lifestyle.

Fez Travel Tips

  • Don’t drink any water that isn’t from water bottle, or that you trust to be filtered. If this even means refusing ice in restaurants, you should make sure to do it. Getting very sick early on your Moroccan tour is one easy way to ruin a vacation.
  • Avoid drinking alcohol. This is frowned upon in most of Morocco, specifically in Fez, which is one of the most conservative cities in the country.
  • Are you looking to save some money? Take your meals not covered by your group tour at the many street vendors. The food is delicious, authentic, and very cheap.
  • Be wary of fake guides. As you will be on a guided tour, it’s less likely that you’ll be harrassed by these men, but if you are, be sure to tell them a firm “no” or, in Arabic, “la.”
  • On a similar note, be sure to negotiate the price of your transportation and any favors you may ask for beforehand. This way, you won’t be charged an absurd amount at the end of the ride.
