France Attractions And Landmarks Guide

France is one of the most visited countries in the world. And that’s no surprise -- when you have Paris, the Riviera, Provence, Burgundy, the Loire Valley, Normandy, the Pyrenees, the Seine, the Rhone, and some of the world’s best food and wine, you’re going to draw crowds. Whether you tour France by river cruise, culinary tour, or bike tour you’re sure to agree: Viva La France!

tour to Paris, of course, is on most everyone’s France tour itinerary, with sights like the Louvre (so huge it could easily take a month to cover beyond the Mona Lisa), Notre Dame Cathedral, the Eiffel Tower, Montmartre, the Latin Quarter, the Marais, and the Seine with its Bateaux Mouches boats and dozens of bridges offering a walkway or river ride through the center of it all.

Beyond Paris

But as wonderful as it is, Paris is just a start. Not far away stands the splendid Palace of Versailles, where the Sun King, Louis XIV, and Marie Antoinette held court in the days preceding the French Revolution. Also nearby is Chartres Cathedral, featuring some of the finest stained-glass windows in Europe.

A bit farther takes you southwest of Paris to the Loire Valley, site of a number of wineries and chateaux. And northwest lies a series of towns and cities along the Seine that inspired artists like Van Gogh and Monet and where Joan of Arc died at the stake in the 14th century.

The Seine leads to Normandy, on the English Channel, site of distinctive architecture, lovely seaside villages, Mont-St-Michel (the remarkable fortress surrounded by water and reachable only at low tide) and beaches that were crucial to the Allied invasion of then-Nazi-occupied France in World War II some 60 years ago.

River Cruises

Paris to Normandy is one of the major river cruising routes in France. Other popular river cruise routes include Lyon -- one of France’s gastronomic capitals -- south to the Mediterranean, which goes along the Rhone River through Burgundy wine country; and routes that travel through the Bordeaux wine regions on France’s west coast.

All offer a relaxed but informative way to tour France, since all the river cruises feature numerous port stops, many with guided tours included.

The Riviera and Provence

A visit to France may include a tour along the Mediterranean Sea. The glamorous and sometimes ostentatious French Riviera beach resorts include Cannes (site of the film festival), Nice (the largest city), Cap Ferrat, and St. Tropez.

The Riviera is just part of sunny Provence in southeastern France, which is tucked between the Rhone River, Italy, the Alps and the Mediterranean. It’s a land where sea air, mountain gorges, vineyards, medieval villages, Roman ruins, olive groves and lavender fields combine to create a sensuous medley of sights, scents and tastes.

The light in Provence is so striking that painters such as Van Gogh, Cezanne, Matisse, and Picasso were all drawn here, immortalizing the landscapes, architecture, and people.

Provence is home as well to France’s second largest city and major port, Marseilles, which displays North African influences and is known for bouillabaisse, the local fish stew. All this has helped make Provence France’s number one tourist destination beyond Paris.

And Much More

France also has mountain playgrounds in the Alps bordering Switzerland and the Pyrenees bordering Spain; the French-German influenced province of Alsace-Lorraine centered in Strasbourg, and other magnificent cities such as Avignon, Toulouse, Dijon, Nantes, and Lille.

In fact, every corner of the country contains picturesque villages, inviting bistros and cafes, the aromas of fresh-baked baguettes and croissants, the clink of wine glasses, and roadways and paths just waiting to be explored on foot, by bike, or by motor. With such a wealth of attractions to choose from, you can rely on Stride to help you find the right escorted tours of France for your upcoming voyage touristique.

Self-Guided Cycling in Provence & the Luberon

Fantastic week cycling through spectacular scenery and pretty villages.  Hotels basic but adequate, everyone we met was very friendly and food and wine were superb!
Highlight of the week had to be Mont Ventoux.  Although my husband is a seasoned cyclist, it was the first time I had attempted something of this difficulty and felt a real sense of achievement getting to the top.

We were on a self-guided tour so this is not relevant.

You may want to think about taking your own bikes with you, as we were not overly impressed with the quality of our road bikes, especially if you want to climb Mont Ventoux.

It was quite a bit more expensive September 2015

Cote D'Azur Sailing Adventure: Nice to Marseille

It was quite a bit more expensive than the other tours out there (g adventures and contiki) and although I enjoyed it, I don't know if I would pay more

The Treasures of France July 2017

The Treasures of France including Normandy Summer 2018

You get what you pay for. This was a budget holiday for us. We understood this when we booked. It met our expectations. Having said that, the Paris hotel locations were too far out of the city centre. The Relais du Roy hotel was a shocker. No air con. No fans. No lifts.
Thank god for The Holiday Inn at Blois. Blissful air con in the heat.
The tour itself was thorough. Covered a lot of territory. Too much on days 2 and 5. Constantly on the move. Either omit something (WW2 stops) or add another day. The St Malo and Mont Saint Michel drive was ridiculous. A lot of doubling back. Unnecessary. Could be better.
The best day of the trip was the Be My Guest experience . Remy is a treasure. Fabulous afternoon.
Trafalgar sells the dream very well - brochures, marketing, staff. But, you omit the finer details - mileage, time taken to get places, the amount of walking required. At the end of the day, the onus was on us to ask more questions and do more research. Not take the brochure info at face value.
At the end of the day, we enjoyed ourselves. Except for the unexpected heat! However, it will be a long time, if ever, before we take another escorted coach tour. With Trafalgar. With any company.

Self-Guided Cycling in Provence & the Luberon

France the place to cycle, but so pleased my friend spoke french, the directions were awful.
Getting to the destination at the end of each days cycling. As we had always cycled much further due to poor directions and getting lost. ( Two Australians on same route also got lost everyday)

No group leader on our trip

Ask for (or research your own) directions. Need blown up maps of each days route.
Ask cost of taxi airpost to destination. Ours 100 eur. Trains don't always run that often.

Unlucky enough that a bird flew into our engine on take off, that delay caused us to miss train connection. Disapointed Exodus happy to leave us 5 hours waiting for train, thought guy out there might have picked us up. Also Phone number given in case of emergency was supposed to be an English speaking gent - although he was lovely, he could not speak english. YOU NEED TO SPEAK A GOOD DEAL OF FRENCH TO GO ON THIS HOLIDAY.

Pay for a 4 star trip and get 2 star food September 2018

Treasures of the Mediterranean - Northbound 2018

My husband and I took the Treasures of the Mediterranean tour two weeks ago. The food off the ship was very good. The food on the ship was subpar (2 stars out of 4 stars). We ended up ordering French Fries at the beginning of each meal so we would at least have something to eat. I called Tauck and voiced my concerns. They offered us a $250 voucher each for another trip. I hardly think the food portion on the yacht was $250. Why would I go on another Tauck trip when my first one, which was our retirement celebration due to the poor food. The majority of the people on the trip were dissatisfied with the food and their reviews reflected it. Read more
