Things to do in Ghana - Expert’s guide

1. Cape Coast Castle

Cape Coast Castle top Ghana attraction

This commercial fort, or “slave castle” as they were known, is one of many that dotted the African coast during the slave trade. The forts were used to hold slaves before they were shipped to the Americas.

Today the fort has been converted into a museum, detailing many sides of West African history, open year round to visitors. It is suggested to allow 2-3 hours for the museum. It’s an emotional journey to walk through a painful period of not just African but human history, but an important one as well, and will help shape your Ghana travel experience.

2. Mole National Park

Mole National Park Ghana

As Ghana’s largest national park, Mole National Park in the northern part of the country is a bit of a hidden secret. Ghana is more off the beaten track as a safari destination, and as such safari experiences are less expensive and also more authentic.

Mole National Park is well known as a great place to spot elephants - the best time of year being December through April.

3. Jamestown

An edgy, hip and hopping hotbed of modern culture, Jamestown in the heart of Accra, is a true reflection of local life. Many poorer neighborhoods have sprung up in Jamestown, though the local spirit is undeniable. Young travelers eager for a taste of “real” Ghana will love walking through, discovering hidden gems - but be forewarned - this kind of travel is not for the faint of heart.

You will encounter poverty, full stop - but if you’re willing to looking beyond, soon the communal and welcoming nature comes through. Enjoy local food, art, and dance or even take in a local boxing match.

4. Visit the Kente Weavers in Ashanti

Kente Weaving in Ghana - top attraction

Kente is a specific type of cloth woven by the Ewe people. Visiting the Kente village is a popular Ghana travel activity. Weaving is an art with a long history and a strong cultural tradition in Ghana.

The woven fabric is colorful and each color and pattern has a specific meaning. The Kente art dates back to the 11th century and to watch as it’s created, the process much unchanged over hundreds of years is one of the great joys of traveling in Ghana.

5. Mount Afadja

The highest mountain in Ghana - sitting 885m above sea level - Mount Afadja is a popular attraction for hiking. You can choose to hike with or without a guide, but we we always recommend going with a guide, especially if you’re interested in learning about the surrounding area, native plants and animals, and other points of interest.

The hike doesn’t take very long, but it is pretty much “up” all the way. Experienced hikers may find the trip very easy. The jungle and views you get from the top are worth it no matter what.

6. Elmina Castle

Elmina Castle Ghana, Historical landmark attraction

Originally constructed by Portuguese traders, Elmina Castle dates back to the late 1400s. Like many European fortresses along the West African coast, it’s impressive architecture and beauty hides a dark past.

It was here that hundreds upon thousands of African slaves awaited a horrifying fate. As they were taken away from their home across the ocean in bondage.

Today recognized as an UNESCO World Heritage Site, Elmina Castle is an important historical landmark and an essential stop on your Ghana trip. The tours through the castle are emotionally difficult - but they tell an important story.

7. Kakum National Park

Kakum National Park offers some spectacular adventure activities. Visitors flock here to try their daring at one of the famous canopy walks across one of Africa’s only three canopy bridges! You can even sleep in the treetops if you don’t have too much of a fear of heights.

Keep your eyes peeled for monkeys, birds, and butterflies - and be sure to take advantage of guided nature walks. Local guides are full of interesting information about the environment, plant and animal life, as well as local medicinal plants found in the region.

It’s best to visit on the weekdays, early or later in the day. Kakum is a very popular site, so it could be crowded.

8. Accra

Accra capital city Ghana tours

There are many things to see in Accra, the bustling capital city of Ghana. Accra is not the prettiest city, but it is worth a stop on your tour in Ghana. Featuring a surprisingly good nightlife scene, if you enjoy being out until the wee hours, Accra is a hidden gem you can’t miss.

Those who enjoy shopping will love Makola Market, which seems to appear out of nowhere as throngs of people barter and browse the hundreds of food stalls and other venders. It’s a bit shell-shocking but a truly local experience.

Accra is noisy and busy and there’s a lot to see and do. Tours that stop here will usually allow for a lot of free time so that you can choose how you want to spend your time.

9. Wli Waterfalls

Another amazing natural site in Ghana, the Wli Waterfalls are in fact the tallest waterfalls in all of West Africa! Stunningly beautiful, the waterfalls are accessible via a short or long hike, depending on how leisurely you want to be, though lush jungle.

10. Lake Bosumtwi

Ghana’s only natural lake, Bosumtwi (also spelled Bosomtwi) is located in the Ashanti region. A bit off the main tourist track, but if you’re looking for a calming atmosphere, this spot is for you. There isn’t much to do, other than relax on the banks or go fishing so be sure you’re ready for some digital detox and outdoor time. There are some fascinating local legends surrounding the lake, which you’re sure to learn as you enjoy a few days on the lake.

The Best of Ghana by Continent Tours
Highly Recommend Continent Tours - Great value for money, no regrets
I have just returned from a 12 day Best of Ghana Cultural Tour by Continent Tours. I have travelled around the world to over 40 countries and this was far the best trip I’ve taken. It was cultural, educational, historical, inspirational, and overwhelming with much joy which touched my mind, heart & spirit in such a sacred way. It was truly a trip of a lifetime and all due to the expertise of Tina Ross, Continent Tour Manager, the thoroughness of Matina Kuma, our tour guide, and safety of Samwell, our driver.

From the moment I contacted Continent Tours, Tina made me feel very at ease that she understood exactly what I wanted in a customized tour. She always exercised professionalism, thoughtfulness, compassion, understanding and a sweet demeanor throughout the 9 month process before our departure. She never gave any hesitation or negativity towards the changes, additions, questions and concerns that I had. Her actions certainly provided me with a comfort and assurance that I was going to have the type of tour that I desired. As the tour date became closer & closer I became more & more excited which was all due to Tina. My tour was all of what I planned and even more than my expectations and was blessed immensely with extra surprises that were included by Continent Tours.

To add to this, our tour guide was Matina Kuma, who had an effervescent and loving personality with her heartfelt hugs and sweet radiant smiles from our airport pickup throughout our journey until our airport drop off. She embraced my 3 companions and myself with much care, protection, respect & love as senior women and affectionately referred to us as “Mama”, which gave rise to us truly adopting her as our Ghanian daughter and genuine blessings of being family. She was very kind and generous to ensure our needs where met at all times. She had an amazing and thorough knowledge of all the regions of Ghana, its different languages and cultures which provided us with much education, history and to experience the different people of Ghana in every aspect of life. There was never a concern or fear or doubt that we were truly in safe hands. Samwell, our soft spoken, warmhearted and expert driver was very meticulous in maneuvering some of the undesirable roads to give us the best comfort.

I would sincerely and strongly recommend Continent Tours to anyone wishing to visit Ghana and especially for those that desire to learn their ancestry. Do your research, document what you wish to see and experience, number of days first so that Continent Tours can give you the experience of a lifetime that you will greatly appreciate with no regrets and be enthused to share with others as I do. Be sure to request Tina Ross, Matina and Samwell.

Arrive Africa Safaris Company Reviews by Arrive Africa Safaris
Beautiful country and about its wildlife.
We were in a big tour group of 21 tourists from USA. Three safari vehicles from Arrive Africa picked us up from the border of Rwanda & Uganda.

Our guides Arshley Brian, Simon Gary, and Eddie waited for us for 5 hours at the border! They welcomed us with big smiles and open arms!
I was in the car driven by Arshley Brian, our tour guide. He's only in his mid-20s but he conducted himself with such professionalism and he shared with us his vast knowledge about his beautiful country and about its wildlife.

He would spot every animal along the road and he would point them to us as he would give us information about those animals. He would recognize all bird sounds he could hear and identify what kind of bird they were just by their sounds.
We were learning a lot from him! He kept our journey fun and entertaining as he was opening our eyes to the beauty of Uganda, the Pearl of Africa!

Arrive Africa Safaris Company Reviews by Arrive Africa Safaris
Incredible experience
We are just back from 5 days trip to see the Mountain Gorillas in the Impenetrabile foresta. One of the most incredible experience in our life. Our trekking to meet the gorillas was quite hard but once you reach the place you are repaid for every effort made because the spectacle is just indescribable. And gorillas have been just a small part of our safari. From queen Elisabeth national Park where we saw lions and a Leopard to the chimpanzees treeking to the boat cruise on Kazinga channel. Any minute was a new surprise and we discovered a wonderful country. Great accomodations and good food. A special thanks to our driver Antony for his constant support and professionalism!

Arrive Africa Safaris Company Reviews by Arrive Africa Safaris
The trip was generally a life time memory
Warmly Back to the States but with my heart beat way back in Africa, we took on a group tour from South Africa, visited the Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe,Flew in from Rwanda and we were picked from the Uganda Rwanda Border by our Three guides Simon,Eddie and Arshley Brian who was our guide for the whole time., We sat in Arshley's Jeep and right from the start he proved knowledgeable and so caring beyond his age, He was able to answer and well explain all questions asked without hesitation and at some point he surprised us when he kept on saying we should ask him as many questions as we can because if we didn't ask then he would fall sick,He went on to spice the trip by finding us all the animals we wisher for especially the Leopard he spotted while driving ,Mimicking different birds that would respond back to him, Arshley has a wide knowledge on trees and was able to identity them by their Latin names, We could not ask for any thing more than what we got from Arshley thanks to Arrive Africa for finding us the best of the best guide. The accommodations were all superb and the Ugandan people are all friendly. The trip was generally a life time memory and I hope one day I can return for more longer days.
