What travelers are saying

"Normally, I don't feel like writing reviews, but I felt compelled to do it for Athens Insiders. I made the decision to travel to Athens in the summer of 2012 in order to avoid the commotion that was predicted to result from the Queen's jubilee. As usual, my work kept me busy right up to the last minute, so I ran out of time to do anything fun for my week-long trip. I learned about this young group of tour guides for Athens and its vicinity from a friend. I had a wonderful experience. I got in touch with Daphne, who gave me email recommendations for Athens attractions to see, inquired about my preferences for local cuisine, and then devised an itinerary for my trip. In addition to visiting the typical suspects in Athens (Acropolis, etc.), I also chose to travel to Delhi and spend a night at a campground there. And I had a great time, honestly. We visited the attractions when there were few visitors and spent the busiest times outside of Athens rather than being herded around like cattle. I was taken to incredible tiny eateries (the well-known tavernas), marketplaces, and other regional shops."

What travelers are saying

""Our trip with Greeking Me completely exceeded our expectations. In booking the trip, Nikos was able to to design our trip exactly to our specifications and it truly was just what we had hoped it would be. We had licensed tour guides for our visits to the Acropolis, ancient Corinth, Nafplio and Mycenae. All three were experts in their field and left no questions unanswered. They were friendly, helpful and we enjoyed our time with each of them. We met our tour leader, Vasiliki on our 2nd night and she, and our driver, Alex, would remain with us until we were dropped off at the airport. We could not not have asked for a better team. We became fast friends and shared many great times together. As we hit inclement weather at the end of our trip, Vasiliki revised our itinerary and added activities that she knew we would enjoy. We fell in love with the mountains of the Peloponnese and visited many of the tiny villages high in the mountains. Our driver, Alex, was from one of these villages, Vytina, and he was kind enough to show us his childhood home, took us for a walk through many beautiful streets and we had lunch at one of his favorite taverns. We all took an unplanned hike up the gorge to the Monastery of Prodomos. An exhilarating (and wet) hike uphill through beautiful forests and breathtaking views. Both of these days were a great part of our trip. The food and wine tasting tours were first rate and we enjoyed each one. Our favorite, however, was the time we spent with Dimitrius and his family at their organic farm and vineyard. After a cooking lesson for cheese bread, we drove up to his vineyards to see his crops. We returned back to his home and had a wonderful Greek feast prepared by his wife and daughter. Others “greats” of the tour: Kapsia caves, simply unbelievable Country cooking class at Arcadiani Agrotourism Collective Church of Agia Theodora What we remember most is the bond we formed with Vasiliki and Alex. They made our trip one we will never forget. They were caring, kind, personable and cared about our every need. Obviously we would recommend this trip to anyone. It was our first trip to Greece, but it won’t be our last.""

What travelers are saying

"A Culture Trip curated trip is a must for anyone burnt out planning their own trips or going to a remote or unfamiliar area. Having a local insider was the highlight of the trip. From the moment we landed to the moment we had to go through security to leave, we were completely taken care of. Our insider gave us great recommendations for restaurants and was very adaptable to any situation that arose."

What travelers are saying

"We joined the Intrepid “Real Italy Food Tour” and enjoyed it thoroughly. Our tour guide, Micol, was very knowledgeable and provided us with lots of good information. It seems Micol knew many of the staff of the venues we visited, including the pasta making class we attended. Our group of 11 travelers was extremely compatible, which greatly added to the fun and enjoyment."

Greece Tour Selection Trips

  • While visiting the Acropolis is a must, you really don’t need a lot of time in Athens. Flights will fly right into Athens so spending 1-2 days at the beginning or end of your trip is usually sufficient.
  • There are many options for getting between the islands — flying, taking a ferry or chartering a boat. The waters can be a little rough at times, so flying between the farther islands might be a good option for those who get sea sick.
  • While on the map the islands look close, they are quite a distance from the mainland. The “closer” islands of Mykonos, Santorini and Crete are all over 4 hours on a ferry, so if you are looking to visit multiple islands, be sure to know the distances so you make sure to have enough time in each island.
  • Each island has its own culture and attractions: Santorini has the iconic photos you see of the blue-topped churches on the cliff and the lava-black sand beaches. Mykonos is the “party” island with lots of day beach clubs and a robust nightlife. Koufanisis is the off-the-beaten-path island with a small, country feel. Naxos is also a less-traveled island with abundant shops and restaurants and a beautiful castle.

Additional details

Experiencing Ancient Greece on Your Tour

The Ancient Greeks founded democracy, created theater, the key principles of modern architecture, philosophy, trial by jury, instituted a mythology still taught to every generation, standardized medicine, and generally provided the foundation to all of Western Civilization.

As a result, we have a couple things to thank them for -- and there is no better way to do this than to visit the many Ancient archaeological sites that stand to this day in Greece. Here are some of the best archaeological sites in Greece:

1. The Acropolis.

This UNESCO world heritage site is a worldwide symbol for the contributions of Ancient Greece to modernity. Some of its most notable features include the theatre of Herod Atticus, the Parthenon, the Temple of Nike Athena, and the Pinacotheca.

2. The Parthenon.

Perhaps the most iconic symbol of Greece, this temple sits in the heart of Athens. Originally dedicated to the goddess Athena, it housed various statues. This massive building, one of the most impressive architectural feats of its time, is truly awe inspiring to see in person.

3. Monolithos Castle in Rhodes.

Climbing the tall rock that the castle sits on will not only give you a peek at the two 15th century chapels inside of Monolithos, but gorgeous views of the entire island. One interesting feature of the Monolithos castle is that it was built on the foundations of an even older castle, which is easily seen at the spot.

4. Mycenae.

This late Bronze Age city was once one of the epicenters of Greek civilization, and remains remarkably intact.

5. Acropolis of Rhodes.

Made up of the ruins of multiple temples, a small odeion, and other buildings, a guided tour of this spot can offer deep insight into Ancient Grecian life. The surrounding natural sights make the trip particularly enjoyable.

6. Temple of Apollo, Delphi.

Although perhaps not so physically impressive, this spot is overwhelmed with spiritual and historical significance. The home of the Oracle of Delphi, this site plays a role in dozens of ancient myths and modern stories.

Facts about Greece

  • The official name of Greece is the Hellenic Republic.
  • The saying “taking the bull by its horns” comes from the Greek myth of Hercules saving Crete from a raging bull by seizing its horns
  • 80% of Greece is mountainous.
  • Continuously inhabited for over 7,000 years, Athens is one of the oldest cities in Europe. It is also the birthplace of democracy, Western philosophy, the Olympic Games, political science, Western literature, historiography, major mathematical principles, and Western theories of tragedy and comedy.
  • Greece has more archaeological museums than any other country in the world.
  • Greece’s currency, the drachma, was 2,650 years old and Europe’s oldest currency. The drachma was replaced with the Euro in 2002.
  • Make sure to try Greece's national dish: moussaka.
  • Voting is required by law for every citizen who is 18 or older.
  • Greek people wave with a closed hand as it is considered rude to show your palm of your hand in public.
