I would definitely travel with GJ Travel again.

I have just completed Guided Iceland Circle with driver/guide Bergsteinn. The tour was interesting and well paced. The accommodation was clean and comfortable. Bergsteinn did a good job of providing interesting information, but not too much commentary. Completing the Ring Road is a great way of seeing the different facets of Iceland as each region is quite different. I would definitely travel with GJ Travel again.

Tour with GJ Travel, it was incredible!

I went to Iceland on the First week of February of this year and did a 5 day tour with GJ Travel, it was incredible! We stayed at great places, had excellent food, visited some of the best views on that side of the world and what was more they go beyond their service. Let me explain, you see on the last day of our trip I lost my wallet (entirely my fault for being careless) and in it I had $500 dollars in cash, 30 euro, 5000 Peso, a credit card, a currency card containing another $500 dollars, an ID, a letter, and photos. I thought they were pretty much lost to me and I was down for a few days of my tour. But because Iceland was really mesmerizing, I forgot about my dilemma and continued with my tour. After I returned to my country I was given a message by GJ travel that they found my wallet in the bus and that they are sending them to me. It is now with me complete with everything that is in it. If there was one thing that made me sad only, was the fact that no one had any liking at all at any of my photos hehe. Such honesty and service should be applauded. That is why in visiting Iceland I highly recommend GJ travel as you can never get any better treatment than that. I want to thank the people who made it possible for the return of my wallet especially to Bjarki Georg Ævarsson for answering all my queries about it. So, the next time you think of travel, why not Iceland and why not GJ Travel? I guarantee it will be one of the best decisions you ever did as I did!

Thank you so much for a great life experience!

Ridewithlocals provided Rob and myself with one of the finest rides of our lives. Skuli and GoodJohn were skilled guides who made it feel like we were riding with old friends who wanted to show off their beautiful country. New motorbikes in top condition (Huskavarna 701's) to ride, warm and clean mountain huts to sleep in, excellent homecooked meals, and of course the star attraction, Iceland itself made for a ride neither of will ever forget and are quite likely to repeat again. Thank you so much for a great life experience!

The most incredible spots

My dad, my brother, and I rode 300km with Skuli and Olaf to some of the most incredible spots on the south side of the island. True to the name, we were really "riding with locals". They knew every back road and short cut, even re-routed when a river was uncrossable. If you're an avid motorcycle rider and want an incredible experience touring the dirt roads of iceland, seeing incredibles sights, riding some stellar bikes, you have to ride with locals.

Fantastic experience to explore the beautiful

Did the 6-day Lost Fjords backpacking trip with Borea and couldn't be happier with that choice. Professional, safe, accommodating and cheerful, it was a fantastic experience to explore the beautiful Hornstrandir Nature Reserve. Borea has a welcoming basecamp in Hornvik too, which added some comforts to the trip. Wonderful memories that will stay with us from this trip!

We had an amazing

We had an amazing 4 day kayaking trip with Borea in Hornstrandir! We've done kayaking trips around the world but this was one of the most professional and well-run operations we've ever seen Our tour guide Ronya was amazing, the gear was top notch and the itinerary they had put together was truly special - especially their lodge in Hornstrandir is super charming and in such a picturesque, remote place! (+ foxes visited every day! :-)

Everyone is very friendly, helpful

I did Northern Lights Tours and the Myvatn-Tour: everyone is very friendly, helpful, funny and you learn much about Iceland and its folk. I highly recommend this company. Check out their website, they have many interesting tours.

It was a wonderful experience for all of us

Our northern light tour guide, Anton, was amazing!!! He was extremely passionate (and according to himself, highly optimistic and dangerously stubborn) about the wonders of Iceland, and was taking extra extra miles to ensure that we get to see the northern lights. The tour was scheduled for ~2 hours but he took us for 4 hours! While waiting for the energy, he told us many Icelandic stories, making sure to keep us entertained. It was a wonderful experience for all of us

Don't book with 50 degrees North

50 degrees North rented the cheapest bike for me. Old retro bike with no front suspension and smooth tires. It is not even listed on the Haugastøl Bike Shop website for rental. All are modern bikes with front suspension. On 50 degree North website, the photo pictured modern bikes with front suspension and knobby tires. They never asked me what kind of bike I would prefer. When I asked for a better bike, the bike shop said I would have to pay for an upgrade. The trail from Haugastøl to Finse follows the river upstream with undulating terrain with a 1000m elevation gain and 900 elevation loss. When I contacted 50 degrees North after the first day riding and asked why they rented the cheapest bike for me, their reply was "The bike that has been reserved for you is the most popular bike used on the Rallarvegen, and it has actually been custom built for Rallarvegen by the Norwegian bike manufacturer DBS. Although it would be more basic than what I use at home, I found it totally suitable for this routing." I'm an experience cyclist, and the bike was not suited for the route. In addition, at the hotel in Flam, I was told that dinner was not included. On their website, dinner was listed as being included. It was left off the travel documents they sent me 2 days before I departed for Norway. There also were problems with the luggage transfer.

We were very impressed with the efficiency and friendliness of the staff at Fifty Degrees North

We were very impressed with the efficiency and friendliness of the staff at Fifty Degrees North who organised a 2 week experience for us in Norway. We told them what we wanted and they did all the organising. Everything worked extremely well and this involved travel by train, bus, ferry, plane, car hire and accommodation. When we arrived on a Hurtigruten ferry in Svolvaer on the Lofoten Islands at night we were met by a driver who took us to our accommodation which was superb - a rorbuer (an old fisherman’s hut). We would highly recommend a stopover (we had 3 nights) in Svolvaer if you are doing a Hurtigruten cruise. All the accommodation was first class and in a variety of interesting locations. When we were late collecting our car we had a friendly phone call to check that everything was OK. Thank you very much to all at Fiftydegreesnorth.

We were totally pleased with the service and arrangements.

We took a 3+ week independent rail, ferry, bus, and train tour through Scandinavia and Finland organized by 50 Degrees North and the trip was spectacular because of the excellent work of Satu and Henna. This was a complex trip with lots of different transport and connections. All the reservations were in perfect order and the detailed itinerary was exceptional - every thing we needed was included to make the journey as smooth as possible. Before our trip all arrangements were made on the internet but 50 Degrees was very responsive to questions and additions to the trip. Once during the trip we had to call because a landslide delayed a train connection and the 50 Degree North representative was immediately helpful and responsive. We were totally pleased with the service and arrangements. I would recommend this company to anyone who wants a Nordic Adventure. They are experts on the territory and so detailed compulsive that your trip will be perfect. We made this trip through the Norway 50 Degree office. Thank you Henna and Satu Andy Kosseff

Can't rate this trip highly enough and we loved listening to some great Icelandic

We did the Glacier Wonderland and Northern Lights trip yesterday and can only say it was brilliant. We were very lucky that it resulted in it just being the 3 of is but am sure the quality of the tour would have been just as good had there been more Our lovely guide made sure we had plenty of time at the scheduled stops, answered all our questions and got us to the base camp for the glacier on time. Whilst the glacier part is run by Into The Glacier, this again was well managed and warm clothing was provided for those that needed it - we didn't as Extreme Iceland suggestions on what to bring were clear and ensured we were fine. The ice cave was great, the monster truck brilliant and our lovely guide was waiting for our return. The Northern lights, tho reportedly active, were difficult to spot however we found a good location and managed some good photos - was great to get the time to take lots and the assistance was greatly appreciated. Can't rate this trip highly enough and we loved listening to some great Icelandic music on the way. Definitely a trip to remember! Thank you for a fab day.

Awful Customer Service

We felt obligated to give 1 star because our tour guide last night was great, other than that we would give zero if possible. The entire rest of the booking experience was awful. We had to send 3 emails, 2 calls, and 1 Facebook message only to be put in touch with some rude and unhelpful sales woman. It is our last day in Iceland and honestly this experience has ruined the entire trip and we are extremely upset. There are several other respectable tour companies here, I would strongly advise booking one of those.

We walked on the glacier and went into ice cave

I had an awesome tour with Extreme Iceland. I took "Into The Cave" on Mar 2019. We walked on the glacier and went into ice cave. The guide Erik was friendly, kind and professional, he also was a great photographer. Best rates and best service. I am highly recommended.

It was a great experience

We just completed a 6 day self guided walk in the Pyrenees on the Cathar Castle trail. It was a great experience. Good accomodation, food and scenery. Everything was really well organised bar a couple of very minor hiccups involving taxis but nothing major. We would highly recommend this trip

Cannot wait for my next UTracks adventure.

Have just had an incredible week cycling along the Danube River through Germany, Austria and Bratislava on a UTracks Bike & Barge trip with my partner. We did a self-guided trip with electric bikes so we could set our own pace each day, stopping for long lunches in the sunshine, wine tastings, coffee in gorgeous ancient villages and side trips to castles, imperial palaces and monasteries, before returning to our boat each afternoon in time for drinks on the sundeck. I loved waking up on our boat in a new destination each day ready to explore the European countryside. Cannot wait for my next UTracks adventure.

Had an amazing time on the Full Spanish Camino!

Had an amazing time on the Full Spanish Camino! Utracks organised all the luggage transfers and accommodation. Did a combination of self-guided hiking and cycling, which was the best way to go. Bike hire came with panniers, and the self-guided maps and guides provided were easy to follow. Would do it again in a heartbeat!

This was the first time we had taken a group road tour and I would have to say that it exceeded my expectations. Our guide Danilo was great, it is a difficult job managing people on this type of trip. Everything from the excursion to the dinners where completely organized and well done. We look forward to another trip with Trafalgar in the future. I would without a doubt definitely recommend this trip, it is a little fast pace but Danilo, made sure that we had options if there were needed.

Best of China 2019

The tour guide Hubert was wonderful, very detailed oriented and organized. And had such an extensive knowledge of all the cities and locations we went to. Truly excellent! Personalized care and helpfulness was definitely offered throughout, very nice touch to the trip. Overall a great trip, but some considerations below: The hotel in Beijing – Novotel Peace and the hotel in Chengdu – Crowne Plaza were way below standard – maybe a rating of 2 stars. They were dirty, dark, stained and hot without air circulating in the rooms. After extensive days with waking up early and returning late, you just want to rest in a clean environment with cool air. I would never stay hotels like these. This trip is not for people who cannot handle extensive walking and climbing. Trafalgar lists this as from 5 to 99 years old. Not possible. There were days we did 10 miles of walking, just a caution for anyone considering. We had someone in our tour that was 82 years old and we all took turns taking care of him. Some aspects of the itinerary could be different, but think that is all based on personal preference; however my fellow travelers did feel the same way. The cruise down the Yangtze River was just ‘ok’, time could have been spent better elsewhere. Like Xian, truly amazing city but too short a time. NOTE: Some were charged single supplement, others were not ... I paid for the single supplement and was none too happy about that! Also note that you need to budget for the optional tours that are not included.

Trafalgar is a name many seasoned travelers will recognize. A branch of the Travel Corporation, whose brands all enjoy stellar reputations, Trafalgar has been offering classic and affordable journeys for over 70 years. What Makes Trafalgar Stand Out? Budget friendly without cutting activities Comfortable, not physically demanding tours Largely focused on cultural immersion  Strong reputation    Trafalgar is a budget friendly group tour operator with premium tastes. Their motto is “See the world from the inside,” - this is the place to come for culturally rich and immersive travel experiences that don’t break the bank or the back. Tours are comfortable, not too physically demanding, and offer the opportunity to meet, talk, eat and drink with locals. You’ll get to know chefs, artisans, craftsmen, historians, and farmers as you explore what makes each destination truly special. Trafalgar has a strong reputation, having been around since 1947 - putting them right at the pinnacle of when many premier guided tour companies were established. You’ll meet groups of like minded travelers, enjoy cultural experiences, expertly crafted itineraries with local touches and experiences guides, while traveling in comfort and ease. Who Will Enjoy Traveling With Trafalgar? Older travelers (but all ages are welcome) Low to mid range budget travelers Those who enjoy slow-paced itineraries and little physical activity Those who favor historic sightseeing & cultural immersion over active adventure    If you are an active traveler, perhaps recently retired, eager to explore the world in comfort, visiting a nice combination of unique local spots and classic sites, then Trafalgar could be a great choice. Possibly you are new to group tours and packages, having been used to creating your own travel experiences at a younger age - Trafalgar provides the perfect introduction to group tours. Or maybe you’re traveling with a family and interested in introducing a new generation of travelers to your favorite country - but don’t really have the time or patience to worry about planning out all the logistics. While they offer many trip styles, suitable for travelers of all ages, their classic touch is popular among older travelers. Classic doesn’t mean old fashioned or tired - simply a bit less on the active adventure and more on the historic sights and cultural experiences. They have a number of family focused tours, as well as tailored trips for special interests. Trafalgar trips are budget friendly, with most trips in middle to low range, including a “Cost Saver” feature that allows you to see more inexpensive trips broken down by ratings and cost clearly. They offer several deals throughout the year. Trafalgar is a British brand, so many of the attendees on your tour will be from the UK.   Top Destinations With Trafalgar, you can find trips to Europe, USA & Canada, South America, Asia, Australia & New Zealand. While the destinations are widespread, Trafalgar trips explore the culture and guides take you to hidden local spots without venturing too far outside the comfort zone. Tours in Europe and the UK are among the most popular itineraries. In South America, Trafalgar travels to Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Ecuador and Peru. In Africa, they go to Egypt, Morocco, and South Africa. In Asia, it’s Cambodia, China, Japan, Thailand, and Vietnam. And in the Pacific, Trafalgar visits Australia and New Zealand. Wherever you go, you can expect high quality guides and accommodations, and smooth travels. They also have a number of religious themed tours, including trips that include excursions to Oberammergau, Bavaria. Once a decade this small town presents a Passion Play, and Trafalgar has had special access since 1970. The next time to experience this unique event is 2020. Trafalgar Travel Style The Trafalgar travel style is all about getting to know the culture through activities and connecting with locals. Their main tagline is “Discover the Good Life” meaning getting to experience the real thing, in a safe, escorted environment with knowledgeable guides there to help with the language and provide historical and cultural context. Discovering the Good Life encompasses perks like skipping lines and private access to classic sites; and unique experiences that bring you to places and among people you’d never have the chance to meet traveling on your own. This kind of travel is local immersion, but not in the same way a 25 year old might interpret that idea. Rather than bunking at hostels, going out late at night, and enjoying potentially questionable street food, you’ll stay in premium, centrally located and culturally significant accommodations - everything from bed and breakfasts in Ireland to hotels right on the banks of Norwegian fjords.  Learn cooking techniques in Italy, enjoy private winery tours at French chateaus, and touring a small olive farm in Spain are just a few examples of the kind of unique travel experiences you can expect with Trafalgar. Groups are large, typically between 40-45 travelers, a max of 52 on trips in the USA and Canada. Primary transportation during the tour is in large coaches, equipped with WiFi (with the exception of Alaska) and featuring large viewing windows - ideal for taking in the scenery as you head to your next destinations.   Most meals during Trafalgar tours are included. Trips often include free time during which you can explore on your own, with suggestions from your expert guides. Why Choose a Tour with Trafalgar? Trafalgar has a solid reputation, and they stick to what they’ve done well for over 50 years. They focus on the classics, providing a culturally rich perspective as you meet locals along the way. Their experience has allowed them to cultivate relationships around the world with local businesses - quality control you can trust for every stop along the trip. Niche tours based on specialized interests are also something they are proud to offer. Trafalgar is where you go to have the essentials and logistics take care of seamlessly while you sit back and enjoy. Do note that these tours can be quite large - 40 people traveling together in a tour group can be stifling for some. While they appeal to an older crowd due to their history and recognizable name, Trafalgar has an impressively well integrated social media presence. Trips on their site are accompanied by instagram posts from real travelers who have been on the same tour, using the hashtag #SimplyTrafalgar. Old or young(ish), couple or single, traveling Simply Trafalgar inspires confidence, comfort, and enjoyment.

Tours with Explore are open to all ages, and they even have a whole group of Family Friendly tours available. Because you will be active, being relatively physically fit is going to help your enjoyment level exponentially - and some tours are more difficult than others. As always, accommodations with Explore are chosen for their character and the more they provide a uniquely immersive experience, the better. Another nice feature is Explores 'Tour Pace' designation, which is on a scale from 'Relaxed' to 'Full On,' with most trips falling in between as 'Moderate' or 'Busy.' Fantastic Trip in Southern Africa

We did this trip, Explore Southern Africa, from Aug 9 - 26 this year and we thought it was probably our most memorable trip ever. The variety of wildlife (we saw the big 5 plus giraffes, zebras, cheetahs, hippos, hyenas, wildebeests, impalas, baboons, ...) and our proximity to them that we experienced was unparalleled. The scenery was like nothing we had ever experienced before (our first time anywhere in Africa). Although it was winter time there when we went and many areas were looking very dry it was an experience not to be missed. Additionally we were made to feel welcome everywhere that we went. The highlights of the trip for us would be the two days to the Okavango Delta, the optional game drive through Chobe National Park and day 13 with our guide tracking rhinos in Matabos and going to the African village. Our tour leader, cook and drivers were excellent as were our co-travellers. The meals that were prepared for us tasted great, were well balanced and no one ever left hungry. The 2 person tent accommodations weren't the most luxurious but they allowed one to stay right in the "middle of the action" with the animals in close proximity to our overnight homes. This being the case, we never felt unsafe in our tents at any point. The overlander vehicle didn't have air conditioning, as is standard, however if you made sure to open windows for air circulation during the drive the heat wasn't so bad. If one is prepared to put up with these few inconveniences and willing to help out with camp set up, vehicle clean up, and meal clean up afterwards (this is a participatory type of trip where certain tasks are required of the travellers) it is an experience not to be missed. It all makes one more appreciative of the luxuries that we have at home that many do not have in South Africa, Botswana and Zimbabwe.

Only excellent value for money and memories to last a lifetime.

Faultless service and incredible trips, at a really good price. Plus they are all really nice peeps, by email or phone, and we need more of that in the world. So far, and still counting, I've used them for: Alaska Tanzania Kenya Uganda Northern India Lombok Bali Russia Mongolia China Nepal Never had a bad experience, only excellent value for money and memories to last a lifetime.

Intrepid Travel is all about ‘real life experiences.’ Founded back in 1989 following an “intrepid” African adventure trip, Intrepid lives up to its name by offering up some pretty big adventures -- such as an 11-day hike through Papua New Guinea -- but is broad-based enough to also lead group trips to Hawaii, complete with sipping sunset Mai Tais on Waikiki Beach. Intrepid Travel - Quick Facts Founded in 1989 No Single Supplement (rare exceptions) Small Groups - max 16 on most trips Typical Age Range - 18 - 45 Travel Style - Cultural immersion, adventure, overland Accommodation Style - Camping, Hostels, 3 /4 star hotels Average Tour Price - $2,377 Top Regions - Asia, Africa, Europe, South America Other Brands: Peregrine, Geckos Commonly compared with G Adventures » What Makes Intrepid Travel Stand Out? Small group sizes Travelers from all walks of life Well-balanced itineraries (group and free time allotted) Guides are travel experts or friendly locals Above all else, Intrepid strives to get its travelers off the beaten path and under the surface of the local culture. To accomplish this, group sizes average just 10 travelers each, with a maximum of 16 on most trips. This allows for more use of local transportation and lodging, along with fostering cultural immersion. Intrepid also employs local English-speaking leaders who act more as a resource for local exploration than do typical ‘guides,’ shepherding groups from one place to another. Who Will Enjoy Traveling With Intrepid Travel? All ages (seniors included) Adventure seekers and culture enthusiasts Intrepid is one of the early pioneers of the “adventure”-style guided trip. Despite its informal beginnings and emphasis on younger, highly adventurous travelers, Intrepid has expanded to a global company with a broad range of trips to fit all ages. Intrepid divides its small-group trips into three separate styles of travel, all priced accordingly. “Basix,” for budget travelers, keep inclusions to a minimum and offer plenty of free time, “Original” journeys which offer more included activities and more hotels, while “Comfort” trips offer the highest level of included activities and standards of accommodation, as well as roomier vehicles. The kind of traveler who gravitates to Intrepid Travel is one who has a real sense of adventure - whether this means hard adventure, or simply going deeper off the beaten path. Interacting with locals is an important factor when you travel, as is gaining a unique cultural perspective. A sense of fun is also essential, whether it means going out at night with your tour mates or daring, ahem, encouraging each other to try strange new foods. Top Destinations Asia South America Africa Europe Originally focused on small group adventure tours to Asia, Intrepid has expanded rapidly over the years, while maintaining its classic, adventurous, and immersive style. Today Intrepid Travel offers more than 1,000 different experiences in over 100 countries, on all seven continents. Regions with the most trips include Asia, South America, Africa, and Europe. Intrepid Travel Style Intrepid enjoys using local, unique forms of transportation. You might find yourself traveling by felucca in Egypt, on a camel in Morocco, or in a tuk-tuk on the best Thailand tour of your life. Accommodations, which could range from guesthouses to home stays, are also locally owned, allowing a more authentic taste of the region while contributing to the local economy. There are a few broad travel styles to choose from when deciding on an Intrepid tour: 1. Basix - Budget travelers who don’t mind, and in fact prefer, simple accommodations - camping and homestays with basic amenities, and crave a lot of free time for exploring independently will love these tours. Public transportation is used exclusively so pack light! These trips often attract a younger crowd who love the idea of throwing a backpack on, keep plenty of room for the unexpected in their schedule, and allocate their travel funds towards spontaneous bus tickets and street food instead of museum tours and 5 star restaurants. 2. Original - These trips take the backpacker spirit of local immersion, incorporating all the benefits that come with going with a planned itinerary. This style is called “Original” because it’s the type of travel that put Intrepid on the map...pun intended. Accommodations are still simple and budget minded - often homestays are used to give you a true sense of place, personality, and culture. Mostly public transportation is used. 3. Comfort - Intrepid is known for the active adventure style of travel and these trips keep that mentality, with a few more creature comforts thrown into the mix. You can expect higher end, more discerning, accommodations that include a wider variety of included amenities, transportation is mostly private, though you can still expect to use some public transport, as is the Intrepid way. More meals are included in the trip price, and more group activities - which means a bit less free time to explore on your own. Why Choose a Tour With Intrepid Travel? Intrepid is a good choice if you don’t mind foregoing some creature comforts for a truly authentic, local experience. If you enjoy meeting locals when traveling, sampling new and exciting foods, and traveling in mixed-aged groups of 10-16 people, Intrepid could be a good fit for you. It’s important to note, sometimes “ample free time” can be a blessing and a curse. It sounds great on paper, but if you’re looking to maximize your dollar and your vacation time, be sure you understand the implications of having a lot of free time during your itinerary. For some travelers this is an absolute requirement, but for others it can be tough to branch off and explore independently - you also need to make sure you allocate enough travel money for independent meals. The tour leaders are great resources of information for how to spend your free time, but if you like having a full day scheduled from breakfast to dinner, Intrepid may not be the best company for you. Lastly, if sustainable and responsible travel is important to you, Intrepid has poured millions of dollars into local economies, and has a very strong emphasis on responsible travel. So you can feel good knowing that your money helps support some of the innkeepers, vendors, and communities that you’ll meet along the way.

Bad trip leader experience

The activities were a mixture of good and repetitive and the description of the game drives seems a little embellished. We didn't encounter hardly any elephants and the leopard sighting is apparently not as common as one might think (2-3 a week according to local guide). While we were "fortunate" to observe one, it was so far away that only a 400mm lens would get to see it, but that's after you fight through about 40 vehicles all converging to a single space in order to catch a glimpse before the park warden hurries you on because your time is up! It's also a madhouse trying to get into the park. There is no orderly fashion while up to a hundred vehicles all vie to be first in the gate (this is at Yala). The biggest downside to the trip was our trip leader. On two occasions when we had questions about the activities, he became very defensive and argumentative, and when trying to walk away from the conversation so that it didn't escalate further, he followed us intent on exclaiming what a good guide he's been and that we were the problem. We walked away again, and yet he still following us turning the conversation into harassment. I was glad when the trip ended to get away from him and if it weren't for having another back-to-back Exodus trip (see Maldives review) immediately following this one, I would have never wanted to travel with Exodus again given that experience. In sum, trip leader very poor (astonishingly so) and trip itinerary could improve by offering more variety/flexibility to wildlife viewings rather than doing the same repeat walks 3 times. All food was at hotels so not much of a variety or local fare encountered. Lovely country and lovely people though and group was great!

The most stunning trip of my life

Its been a long held dream of mine to go to the Antarctic and the trip I booked via Exodus far exceeded my expectations. Amazing scenery, captivating and exciting wildlife, a plethora of facts, figures and general education from the on board experts and I can claim a world first to boot from my holiday to the Antarctic and below the polar circle. The landscapes and wildlife. The scenery is breathtaking, from the continent itself to the many islands and icebergs floating away from the land mass and glaciers. I have never seen anywhere quite so remote and in many ways barren, yet at the same time rich in life and activity. And you will never get over the amazing shapes of the ice along with the vivid blues you see in the glaciers and icebergs. Quite sensational. The penguins are of course the stars, but the frequency of whale sightings and fluking along with seals and many type of birds including the mighty albatross just make the experience even more rewarding. The tour leader is in effect an Expedition Leader fronting a large team of professional from a range of countries. Ours was wonderful. An enormous personality and with the best sense of humour coupled with safety and huge amounts of professional integrity. The people in the expedition team were sensational. They come from a mix of backgrounds, however all have skills in subjects ranging from glaciology to water sports instructor, polar researcher to the armed forces, historian to nature and much more. Not only do you get the chance to attend lectures and learn from them on a really diverse range of topics, but they also accompany the trips off the ship and interact with you during meals and drinks as well as on time when you are cruising. They have both professionally and also personally empowering stories to tell and they really enhanced my trip in a way I did not think possible. If you want to do any of the activities then book them up as soon as you make your reservation. Spaces are limited and I was unable to camp on the ice or take part in kayaking. Don't worry about being cold. Its not actually as cold as you imagine and the ship is fantastically warm and homely. The jacket and boots they supply you with are excellent. Concentrate on buying good quality thermals in layers along wit6h waterproof trousers and gloves and a warm fleece or wool hat. Edit your photos as you go along and always be ready to shoot stuff. The onboard team will help you with this as they have photographers ready to help with your trip. I was in the first group of paddleboarders believed to have ever paddleboarded south of the Antractic Circle. Not only had I never done it before, but we got to claim a world first. Finally don't delay going any longer. It may not be a cheap trip, however it is so amazing and experience that you will not regret the time and expense in going.

A magical trip! One of my best ever!

This trip far exceeded my expectations on every level. The underwater wildlife encounters were superior to any other snorkeling I've done. There's an abundance of things to see and coupled with the chance to scuba dive and excellent water conditions - it's a top notch destination. The boat was very comfortable, the crew was excellent and took care of every need, and the food was awesome. Ranks as one of my all-time favorites!

Terrible, the guide ruined our trip

Our guide tried to skip almost all of the things on our itinerary and we had to fight with him to get him to do half of the things we paid for! He hated his job, didn't do any of the guide portion and really ruined our trip to Sri Lanka. Overall, this company was terrible to deal with and didn't care about what their guide did! We didn't get what we paid for at all. Stay away from them!

Based in Paris, Evaneos is similar to a travel agency, though with a heavily personal and social community touch. What Makes Them Stand Out? Evaneos puts you in touch with local travel agents who are there to help you design a custom trip catered to what you want to see and do. They provide easily accessible sample itineraries to help you design the perfect trip.   They are also an effective tool for local travel agents and DMC’s to find new clients. In essence, Evaneos allows the traveler to get directly in touch with the resources often used by traditional tour companies. If you are on the fence about whether you want a small group guided tour, speaking with an agent from Evaneos can clear this up. Agents have a lot of flexibility - and you can still join a tour through them if you end up deciding this is the right mode of travel. Discussing one on one with a local expert can help make this decision clearer! Who Travels With Them? Evaneos attracts a younger traveler seeking creative control over their travel experience. This is also apparent in how they’ve structured their social community. They will appeal most to travelers who are somewhat budget conscious, care about responsible and sustainable travel, and value having a local guide. Evaneos agents are helpful for providing local expertise and knowledge about how to make your trip ideas fit into a viable itinerary. Where Do They Operate? Currently trips are available all over the world, excepting Antarctica - a majority of tours are centered in Europe and Asia, and very few travel to North America. Why Travel With Them? You may be thinking that a guided tour isn’t right, but also may be unsure about creating your own travel experience from scratch. If you are looking for help crafting an experience that has a local focus, with professional input this is a great way to find agents and travel advisors to help you do just that. Prices vary, but are generally affordable - around the same amount as a group tour but this is a great option if you’re looking for something a bit different than a traditional tour. Unlike a traditional travel agent, flight arrangements are not always included.

I would definitely recommend Collette!

We just came back from Sicily. Our tour manager Jovanka Mrdja was wonderful. She was very knowledgeable and made the tour fun. Our driver Franco was also wonderful. He made us feel very safe while navigating the narrow, windy roads. I would definitely recommend Collette and look forward to touring with them again and would love to have Yovanka as our guide

Visit all the must see sites, enjoy cultural experiences, all with a professional and knowledgeable guide, there to help make your travel as seamless as possible. Groups are on the larger side 2. Explorations - These tours are about going deeper, meeting locals, and getting off the beaten path. “Authenticity” is a big word for Collette Explorations. You’ll experience the destination in a smaller group, an average of 18 people, allowing for access to more local experiences not available to larger groups. Classic sites will also be included in your itinerary, but the focus is mostly on unique experiences. 3. Spotlights - Have a shorter amount of time and don’t want to miss anything? Collette Spotlight tours are designed to maximize your city stay or short getaway experience. These are primarily walking tours, packed with sightseeing, historical and cultural information, but with some downtime as well. Typically these tours are between 5-9 days. 4. Collette river cruises go around the world, including China, Egypt, and Europe. 5. Faith - For those travelers interested in visiting religious sites, Collette has a group of tours dedicated to faith based travel. Visit world famous icons and learn their ancient histories. Collette Faith tours visit everything from grand churches to the humble beginnings of the three major world religions in the Holy Land. Tours are history based with an emphasis on finding deeper spiritual significance and meaning. 6. Impact Travel - Being a responsible traveler is an important component on all Collette tours, however if you’re seeking to do more to give back, their Impact Tours are a great way to do so. Sightsee with a purpose as you assist with local initiatives, volunteering among the community, helping in classrooms, and protecting local wildlife. Why Choose a Tour with Collette? If you are looking for an entertaining, fully escorted, active tour to explore new cultures, and enjoy unique experiences, Collette could be for you. They provide a dedicated guide, and handle all the details throughout the tour. Free time is available on some days, but for the most part expect fairly full itineraries and a good amount of walking. Some optional excursions are offered during the tour, so you can tailor your experience to a certain extent. This is a great opportunity for meeting fellow travelers in a similar age range. Collette tours are open to everyone, but the majority of people on your tour will be older - in the 50+ range. Collette tours are ideal for travelers who want to have fun, enjoy the outdoors, and are open to new experiences.

Founded in 1987, Tucan Travel specializes in adventurous, immersive travel experiences. What Makes Tucan Travel Stand Out? They are all about going beyond the resort style of travel for adventure trips that let you experience another side of the country you’re visiting. They offer no pretense either, clearly stating that their style of adventure travel is not for those seeking a chill beach vacation. The four main travel styles you can choose from include Adventure Tours, Overland Tours, Budget Expeditions (specifically geared toward 18-35 year olds), and Add Ons, short side trips. Tour leaders are known as “Adventure Specialists” and will be alongside everyone in your group, encouraging you to to try the fried scorpions. Who Will Enjoy Traveling with Tucan Travel? Travelers who gravitate to Tucan will be budget minded and looking for fun, new experiences - and maybe a classic site or two thrown in for good measure. Unlike some of the companies Tucan is commonly compared with, they do not have an age cap, though travelers do tend to be on the younger end. Think young professionals less interested in an ongoing party, but still not quite at the “cultural attractions and museums” stage. Tucan fits comfortably in the middle, offering inexpensive tours with interesting itineraries. For those younger travelers seeking a youthful group, Tucan does have group trips specifically for 18-30 year olds. Most Tucan trips are active, engaging, and exciting, with many local touches. Travelers with Tucan enjoy taking risks and experiencing a destination from the inside out. The price of Tucan tours is designed to be very affordable, however the tours aren’t all inclusive. You’ll be on your own for some meals, and there is a lot of free time available. Also keep in mind Tucan encourages travelers who want, to go off on their own and rejoin the tour later on. Solo travelers are very welcome, and encouraged! Tucan tours are a great way to make new friends, and most tours don’t require a single supplement if you are willing to share with a same-sex roommate. Tucan Travel Style Tucan tours are separated into 3 broad buckets: Worldwide Adventures, Adventures for 20s to 30s, and Tailor Made Travel. Worldwide Adventures with Tucan are tours intended for a wide audience - the age range is from 18-65. Groups are very small, between 4-19 people. Accommodations are in comfortable, locally owned hotels or guest houses. Like all Tucan tours they are budget conscious. Adventures for 20s to 30s are perfect for young adults between 18-39 years old after an adventure. These tours can be super high energy and are typically low cost. Accommodations range from camp sights to 2-3 star budget hotels and hostels. Transportation will include local public transport systems such as public buses and trains or overland vehicles. A note on Overland Travel: Overland tours are a very specific kind of travel, so make sure you know what you’re getting into! These journeys are self sustaining bus rides. Travelers all pitch in at various times to help with cooking, cleaning, and camp setup or breakdown tasks. Prepare for a rustic, outdoorsy venture. It’s a unique way to travel, but certainly not for everybody! Tailor Made Travel is great for those travelers seeking a more customized experience than a pre-set itinerary can provide. Tucan travel experts will design a trip to your specifications and provide a quote. Suggested for families, couples, and small friend groups. Why Choose a Tour with Tucan Travel? Tucan lays on the adventure travel idea pretty think throughout their tour styles. Adventure travel means many things, and Tucan takes a wide view. If you have an adventurous spirit, are one of the first to try the strange street food, volunteer to have the tarantula crawl on you, and love meeting locals these tours will be for you. You’ll meet young, like-minded travelers, and those that are young at heart. Guides are enthusiastic and experienced, ready for anything and ready to make sure your trip fulfills all your expectations. They emphasise the community aspect of group travel and encourage solo travelers to join their groups (and don’t require a single supplement). Independent travelers who are feeling really unsure about a group tour may find exactly what they’re looking for in a Tucan tour. Tucan actively encourages travelers who join their group tours to go off and explore. You can even choose to spend longer on your own and rejoin the Tucan group at the next destination!

Extremely knowledgeable

Amazing staff who are very friendly and also extremely knowledgeable. My trip was amazing and I enjoyed every minute of it. I did the Spirit of Europe last year and couldn’t recommend Topdeck enough.
5.0 • Sally

Overall amazing value. Food, particularly by Topdeck staff, excellent. Spontaneous/flexible; be prepared to pay for lots of extra excursions, on and off your itinerary, in cash.

Food was excellent. Accomodations were better than expected: hostels, but usually with in-suite bathrooms and always only with other members of your tour of the same gender. Don't try to overplan; trip is quite spontaneous and flexible and you won't know much about the schedule/optionals for each city more than a day or so in advance. Optionals will be plentiful and paid in cash. Only do those that are right for you, even if your trip leader really encourages them and most other people are going. These trips are great for solo travelers, but make sure you find people interested in the same things as you...it will probably be easy to find groups to go to bars and clubs with in the evenings, but harder to find people who prefer other evening plans. Driver was excellent and bus was very comfortable and clean, but be prepared to spend a lot of time on it as there is no driving at night. Trip leader extremely knowledgeable, experienced, and helpful. Overall, excellent value and a trip with plenty of time to see the bucket list highlights in each city.

Fast-Paced Tour of Western Europe that highlighted most Bucket List Sights. Awesome Company. Great Food and Tour Leader

I jumped on this tour with very little notice and planning, and I was thoroughly impressed. Our Topdeck trip leader was very knowledgeable, fun, and adjusted the trip to the group (34 people). The meals provided were delicious, and they worked hard to cater to dietary needs. Accommodations were good, typically with 2-6 people in a hostel room. Keep in mind they are hostels, not hotels (bring your own towel). I loved the itinerary, as it highlighted the must-see places and had variety (ex. Paris, Rome vs. Switzerland). The optionals in each city were all wonderful. However, many were not presented in the Topdeck literature online and were not introduced on the trip more than a day in advance. All are paid for in cash (Euros). Because of how the optionals were presented, it was a bit harder to budget. I would recommend inquiring more about the optionals when booking and at the beginning of your tour via your trip leader. Don't feel pressured to do all of them and remember to keep your own interests in mind. The solo travelers easily found others with similar interests to explore with. For many on this trip, drinking and going out to bars/clubs was a major component (as alcohol is often cheaper than water). Because of the shortness of this tour along with all the destinations, prepare for lots of driving and to make the most of the time you have in each city. This trip provided am amazing sampling of Western Europe and opened my eyes to cultures and history I was unfamiliar with. Overall, I would highly recommend this itinerary and touring company, as it provided a good balance between budget and experiences. P.S. Stay flexible with plans, but some of the popular sights need more pre-planning than expected, like the Eiffel Tower and the Anne Frank House (Amsterdam).

Topdeck tour focuses on providing friendly and authentic guided group tours where like-minded 18-39 year old travelers can have amazing group experiences. There are several trip types to choose from, from camping, to immersive, to multi destination, to sailing. Who Will Enjoy Traveling with Topdeck? Sociable, adventurous, budget conscious 18-39 year olds are the kinds of traveler who will gravitate to Topdeck. Though they offer a few different distinct travel styles, there is definitely a sense of an ongoing party, with travel as the conduit and underlying shared interest. If the idea of being around a group of similarly aged people - many of whom may be exploring internationally for the first or second time - being spontaneous, and meeting locals (often in the environment of bars or clubs) is unappealing, then Topdeck may not be your cup of tea. Introverted travelers, or those for whom an extensively planned itinerary including many museums and historical sites is ideal, may want to hunt around before choosing a Topdeck tour. That is not to dissuade the more observational traveler - who may very well find a group they gel with perfectly on a Topdeck tour. Only to caution that you will be surrounded by several extroverted personalities. The bottom line is if you are game for anything, are traveling on a budget, and don’t mind fairly basic but comfortable accommodations and inexpensive meals - sometimes on the go - then you will enjoy the Topdeck tour experience. Top Destinations Topdeck has tours throughout the world, in Europe, Australia & New Zealand, North America, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. Topdeck Travel Style The Topdeck travel style is tied quite specifically to their audience. These tours are great for youthful and energetic 18-39 year olds looking for a good time and to make new friends. In the interest of keeping their tours affordable, travelers with Topdeck will need to make a few allowances. For example, hostels and hotels may be situated quite far away from the city centers. You can also expect some long travel days. The more of a good sense of humor and adventure you have, the more you’ll enjoy the experience. Why Choose a Tour With Topdeck Feeling the urge to connect with travelers in your age group, have fun, and make lasting friendships? Topdeck has over 40 years of experience in adventure travel, which has helped them create epic low cost trips for 18-30 somethings. These tours are certainly not for those who prefer to take things slow. If your ideal travel experience is more methodical and planned out in nature, Topdeck may not be for you. But if you are an adventurous and social travelers eager to absorb a new culture and make new friends, then hop on board!

The trip was a perfect

We just returned from our first family trip with B&R though Normandy. Our guides, Thilo & Sigrid, were incredible. The trip was a perfect balance of cycling, history, food (and wine, of course). The kids loved hiking across the bay to Mont Saint-Michel and the go-karting was a huge hit (as was pizza night)! Really can't say enough great things about this trip. We enjoyed every minute and are looking forward to planning our next adventure!

Grand adventure

I just completed my 9th biking trip with Butterfield & Robinson! We loved every minute of biking in Tuscany with our guides, Alex, Stephano and Edo. Stunning scenery, challenging biking, a great group of fellow travelers, and, of course, delicious food and wine! Private access to illuminated Medieval manuscripts was a highlight for us because we are college professors and book lovers. Thank you so much for a grand adventure.

Incredible this trip

Just got back from an amazing trip with B&R from Vienna to Prague. This was my first trip with B&R and I was so impressed by every detail!!! Our guide was so thoughtful and made sure every moment was perfect!! We really enjoyed getting to know him and felt completely spoiled by all the great treatment. The accommodations were fabulous, food and wine was delicious and plentiful, and the bike rides were all so much fun with new adventures and beautiful scenery around every turn! Even the walking tours in each place were top notch with very interesting and knowledgeable tour guides that we enjoyed getting to know. I cannot even believe how incredible this trip was, I highly recommend B&R and am already planning my next trip!!!

The seamless combination of luxury minded travel and the active travel style of cycling are what have consistently made Butterfield a household name among affluent 50+ travelers. You can choose your own activity level, whether it’s a ramble through the Burgundy countryside in France or a more strenuous hike along the Inca Trail in Peru. On cycling trips, bikes are customized to fit the riders, and they have a high staff and support vehicle ratio per guest -- making them a top choice for travelers seeking a high-service biking adventure. They offer several tours around the world, small group is their primary offering, though private guided and customizable itineraries are also available. Who Will Enjoy Traveling with Butterfield & Robinson? They offer trips for all ages, but are definitely most popular among older active travelers with a taste for the finer things. If a leisurely 25 mile bike ride through European vineyards, stopping for picnics, going at your own pace, and meeting up with your small group for a nice rustic dinner with a well deserved beer or glass of wine at the end of the day sounds like your perfect vacation, then Butterfield & Robinson is for you. Activity levels vary with the terrain and there are several different activity categories that B&R offers for you to choose from. They’re open to people of all ages -- kids under 18 are eligible to go on special family trips -- and athletic abilities. Ebikes make it easier for even the most basic physical fitness level to travel farther and in more comfort. Of course it’s not a complete ride with no effort - you must pedal, but it is possible to travel on a cycling trip with Butterfield & Robinson without feeling like you’ve entered the Tour de France. Trips with Butterfield & Robinson are not budget by any means, though a range of price options are available in the mid to upper budget category. Top Destinations Over the years, they’ve expanded to more than 100 biking and walking trips around the world, including Bhutan, the Baltics, Jordan and Colombia as well as favorites like Spain, France, and Italy. Wherever you are, you can expect to be showered with refreshments, route maps, and suggestions for interesting places to stop and explore. Butterfield & Robinson Travel Style Most tours with Butterfield & Robinson are easy to moderately paced. Cycling is the primary means of transportation from point a to point b on most trips, with a generous helping of stops to enjoy unique cultural experiences or explore a historical site. Guided bike trips average about 25-30 miles a day (longer for expert level), while walkers average six to ten miles a day. Group sizes are kept small, to allow for travel along all kind of roads, and create the opportunity for a lot of space between riders, allowing you to find your own pace. On most trips you’ll be joined by more than one guide, allowing for very personalized and dedicated attention throughout your cycling experience. Small group sizes also help Butterfield be able to arrange unique accommodations. On a B&R trip, it’s not unusual to find yourself in a renovated castle, chateau or other signature lodging. They are known for cycling, however Butterfield also offers Walking Tours, Family Trips, Boat Trips & Cruises, Safaris, Food & Wine centric tours, and Corporate Holidays. Why Choose a Tour With Butterfield & Robinson? Even for avid hikers and cyclists who choose the more expert options, B&R sees to it that all you’ll have to cope with is that next hill. You never have to carry your own luggage or purchases that you might make along the way -- the support van, which you’re likely to encounter several times a day on your route -- takes care of that. You also have plenty of flexibility in pacing your walk or ride; group members don’t have to stay together -- you can stop at cafes or museums along the way as you see fit. You can even take the afternoon off if you wish. In short, Butterfield is the pinnacle when it comes to well planned, fun, expertly guided, cycling tours with a luxury travel touch.

The Amazing Turkey by land tour was absolutely amazing

The Amazing Turkey by land tour was absolutely amazing. It was well planned and a great introduction to the major cities of Turkey as well as the different landscapes and seas, history, food, culture and traditional crafts. Our guide, Mustafa was very knowledgeable and added so much value to the experience whether it was an explanation of the evolution of Turkey, recommendations on the optional activities or restaurants or a good bad joke. My highlights included a traditional Turkish bath, Turkish pottery demonstration, exploring the Saklikent gorges, paragliding and the hot air balloons in Cappodocia.

British company, Travel Talk, strives to provide top notch travel experiences at reasonable prices. What Makes Travel Talk Stand Out? Travel Talk was born out of the desire to make extraordinary experiences accessible to ordinary people. They have many niche tours such that finding a tour suited to your interests is easy, and you’re guaranteed to meet like minded friends along the way! All tours are led by local experts who are there to make your experience unforgettable. Who Will Enjoy Traveling with Travel Talk? The Travel Talk traveler is someone eager to hit the ground running and explore destinations from all angles. These trips are intended primarily for 18-39 year olds, though the “young at heart” are also welcome. However if you are more in the 40+ range, be forewarned that the tour personality will definitely be youthful in tone. In this case “like minded” traveler is pretty age-range specific. In their own words, travelers on their tours “have a desire to get off the beaten track, experience the culture and tradition all while having a little fun.” Single travelers are more than welcome, and provided you don’t mind sharing a room, no single supplement is required (with the occasional exception on sailing tours). However, unlike their commonly compared counterparts, Contiki and Topdeck, Travel Talk presents itself as less of a constant ongoing party and more of a cultural experiences tour. Not to say there is not the occasional night out on the town - only that the more introverted may enjoy Travel Talk more than Contiki or Topdeck. Top Destinations Their specialized tours focus in Europe, though they also operate in Egypt, Jordan, and Morocco.   Travel Talk Style Travel Talks travel style is all about cultural discovery and having a good time. Accommodations are chosen within a variety of comfort levels, and Travel Talk strives to choose where you stay and how as it’s own experience - not just as an afterthought. Travel Talk tours are budget conscious, but depending on the destination, you may experience anything from a 5 star resort to riding aboard a traditional felucca on the Nile.   Why Choose a Tour with Travel Talk? They are committed to providing a real, adventurous, cultural, and above all local experience. Yet they are careful to not force the comfort zone too far. You will receive outstanding service, accommodation, transportation, and attention from your tour guides. Itineraries cover the must see tourist spots as well as hidden gems. It’s the perfect travel experience that won’t break the bank.

Beauiful Croatia

This was our first Bus Tour. While we did enjopy the spots we visited, we felt that there were too many towns and not enough time in each, necessitating more time on the bus. Nevertheless the value of the tour is undeniable. The Tour director Jon, was extremely professional and he was a huge positive on the trip. The topography of Croatia was spectacular, the Sea and mountain views were gorgeous. Lake Bled, the Postojna Caves, Opatija/Plitvice Lakes, Debrovnik, the Roman Ruins, Zagreb were wonderful. The hotels were all clean and rooms were comfortable. Unfortunately my partner Barbara fell and injured her face and broke her glasses on the way to Debrovnik. Jon was extremely concerned offered to find a doctor ()which Barbara declined) but Jon took the broken glasses to an occulist who temporarliy repaired the frames. Two of our fellow travelors who were Nurses took care of Barbara after the accident.

Wonderful experience, well-deigned by SmarTours

The Treasures of Portugal trip focuses on the highlights of the cultural and artistic heritage of this fascinating country. The chosen destinations and sites rarely disappointed, and there was always something awe-inspiring at each stop. The tour provides a great balance between programmed and free time, allowing you to see what you want or find time to explore on your own. The fact that few dinners and no lunches were provided afford you the opportunity to discover the places and tastes that intrigue you as you discover the variety of offerings available in each location. The destinations chosen are smart and live up to the promise that these are the country's treasures. Our guide was brilliant - she knew well the backstory of the locations and the significance of the art and architecture. Each part of the tour was a lesson in history, presented with excitement and passion. Her adoration of the history and culture of her countrymen was palpable and infectious, and gave the touring experience much added value. Well planned, organized, balanced, affordable, and utterly enjoyable. Very highly recommended.

Exceeded my Expectations!

For someone who usually plans every detail of my travels...going on a group tour was not something I relished. Plus, I knew that Smartours was considered a “budget” travel company, so my expectations weren’t that high. However, other than a few minor inconveniences, this trip exceeded my expectations. The magical African landscapes and its kind, welcoming people made this adventure one of the best vacations I’ve been on. Pros: Well-paced itinerary that gave us the opportunity for some free time to plan our own activities, smallish group (25) of lovely, considerate, fellow travelers (we were in the minority of “younger” folks and we are in our 50s), excellent included tours, mostly lovely hotels/lodges, amazing breakfasts/dinners, included porter services at all stops, Smartours CEO personally responded quickly to our inquiry regarding booking cost concern, and our delightful and attentive guide Jonathan. Cons: 6 hour scheduled layover, most uncomfortable 14+ hour flight ever via South African Airways, trip extension Vic Falls guide was very personable, but not very attentive, Smartours sends trip info only 2 weeks prior to departure (would love to have had this info sooner), several of the optional tours were mediocre. But honestly...if you’re a frequent traveler...these concerns are pretty minor. I will definitely be recommending the South Africa Tour to friends for value/quality and hope that ST keeps its word about limiting group sizes to under 25. I will definitely use them again in the future!

Great Time with Grandfather

I technically took the abbreviated version of this exact cruise a few years back, essentially a one-way trip through the Fjords starting in Bergen and going up to Kirkenes on the Russian border. It was a graduation present from my grandfather, and we took the trip together. He is not the most mobile of travelers, and a cruise was a great compromise for us. I loved being able to talk and read with him on the many rocking chairs looking out the ship's walls, and it was helpful to get the occasional reminder from the Captain about the feature we were passing. We got a solid feel for Norway's coastline and culture from watching attentively from the boat, and also getting off at the majority of the daytime stops. We took part in a bunch of the optional activities (which we booked right beforehand, there was no trouble with that) and there were plenty of options we both liked. One my favorites was seeing a Sami settlement, learning about their culture and how they farm reindeer. The bus ride that took us from the boat to the Sami was also incredible -- the landscape had totally changed, we saw the rows and rows of fish racks, and we even saw wild reindeer run past! The optional activities also meant that when I wanted to take a hike one day, I could go and my grandfather could do whatever he wanted, and we'd see each other in a couple of hours. A couple of other things that made this trip for us: the food and the ship itself. The ship's room was definitely close quarters, but my grandfather is a big man and we still had no trouble with anything. The entire ship is handicap accessible, and there is a gym and a hot tub I utilized multiple times! Most importantly: the food. My grandpa is a HUGE foodie and an adventurous eater, and that was definitely his primary concern, and we were both satisfied with the quality of the food. We both felt there was a good balance between having good food, and having enough classical Norwegian food. Plus, if you feel like getting fancy, there is a separate restaurant on the ship that is an extra fee. The only reason I give "guide" a lower rating is because we weren't really guided for much of the ship, only during the optional excursions and the occasional information from the captain.

One of the world's most beautiful voyages

The Hurtigruten, which travels the coast of Norway north from Bergen beyond the Arctic Circle almost to Russia, is nothing short of gorgeous. You get to stop in big cities/towns like Tromso and Trondheim, but also in little villages, including one known as the farthest north in Europe. You also get to cruise down some beautiful fjords. One of the best features is that the ships double as cargo carriers along with passengers, so at every stop you can watch the crew load and unload the supplies that keep these far-north villages going all year round. (The summer trips are almost all 24-hour daylight, while the winter trips are mostly in darkness.) There's nothing fancy about these ships, and the food isn't as memorable as on some other ships, but the experience is hard to top. Hurtigruten has expanded beyond Norway, too, but I haven't taken any of their other trips.

To the High Arctic on the MV Fram

Before we began the cruise, we spent three days in an apartment in Reykjavik. I would recommend a stay in Iceland to anyone cruising in that part of the world. Iceland is beautiful in a wild and unique way. MV Fram, built by Hurtigruten in 2007 especially for cruising the polar regions, is a wonderful ship. According to Hurtigruten, it carries 318 passengers, but we were told the ship was full on this voyage with 227. The average age of passengers was typical for an expedition-type cruise, i.e., younger than on large ships. There were two or three people with physical handicaps (one in a wheelchair) and a number of children. Eighty to ninety percent of the passengers were Scandinavians (93 Norwegians) and Germans. There were only four Americans aboard, along with a handful of people from other English-speaking countries. The official language of the voyage was English. Check-in on the ship in Reykjavik was chaotic. Help with luggage was available upon request; otherwise everyone managed their own bags. As on more traditional cruises, a cruise card was used for all purchases aboard. There was a small gift shop with clothing appropriate for the voyage, along with some souvenir items and toiletries. Alcohol, soft drinks, and premium coffees could be purchased. Shore excursions were included in the cruise price, and all passengers were given windbreakers as a memento of the voyage. There were two dinner seatings with assigned tables, but due to the nature of the trip, all but two nights were buffets with open seating. The food was Scandinavian, meaning good fresh fish (such as salmon) at dinner, and smoked or marinated fish as a choice at every buffet. Besides the fish and excellent desserts, the food was uninspired, to say the least. Vegetarians, diabetics, and people with gluten intolerance were provided for. A snack bar with complimentary coffee, tea, hot chocolate, cookies, and small sandwiches was open 24/7. There was no room service. The cruise itself was an unforgettable experience. After one sea day we reached Jan Mayen Island, a tiny Norwegian outpost 370 miles NE of Iceland. It is inhabited only by fourteen hardy souls who run the weather station there. There is no harbor, no regular air service, and no tourist facilities. The only visitors are the occasional yachts that anchor there. The Fram was the first cruise ship to call there. Our landing was made on a rocky beach from "Polarcirkel" boats (similar to Zodiacs), and required waterproof boots. Jan Mayen is a wild, desolate place with essentially no vegetation. The perfectly shaped volcano last erupted in the 1970's, and the whole island consists of lava rock. The weather was relatively mild, with calm seas and temperatures in the forties. While we were ashore the volcano was obscured by clouds, but later that night the midnight sun appeared and illuminated the snow-covered peak with its glaciers. As if on cue, three Minke whales also appeared. After another sea day we arrived at Spitsbergen, where our first stop was to be Longyearbyen, the largest settlement in the Svalbard archipelago. As luck would have it, an ice-field totally filled the Isfjorden. The Fram is designed to break through such ice floes, but progress was so slow that after two hours the captain made the decision to cancel that stop and head north. Standing on the bow (fully covered with wind-proof pants, jacket, hood, boots, and heavy long-johns) watching our laborious progress through the ice, I felt a long, long way from home. We saw many birds taking advantage of the shifting ice floes: puffins, guillemots, auks, fulmars, gulls, and arctic terns. Our trip north along the west coast of Spitsbergen took us past an incredible landscape of mountains, glaciers and blue skies. The next morning we stopped for a guided tour of Ny Alesund, a small settlement made up of scientists from different countries doing various polar research projects. Cruise ships and yachts do stop there, but there are no facilities except a small gift shop and a museum. Ny Alesund used to be a mining town, and most of the buildings are remodeled houses from that era. Later that day we made a landing at the beach in beautiful Magdalena Fjord, where blubber ovens were still visible from the days when whaling ships used this natural harbor (ice-free year round due to the Gulf Stream) as headquarters for their activities in this part of the world. While leaving Magdalena Fjord we saw our only polar bears of the trip, unfortunately far in the distance. It was a mother and cub. After midnight that night (still bright sunlight) we reached Moffin Island off the north coast of Spitsbergen. It's a walrus preserve, so we were not allowed to go ashore but could see the walrus colony quite clearly. There were other wonderful experiences sailing through the many fjords and past the countless glaciers and bird nesting cliffs of Spitsbergen. Days and nights were spent watching the scenery and profiting from the excellent lectures and slide shows of the scientists aboard the ship. Among them were five Ph.D.s in such fields as Geology, Glaciology, and Ornithology. All were experts on the polar regions and also gave talks on the history of polar expeditions, animals of the Arctic, and the like. There was no nightly entertainment per se, just a pianist in the lounge, and a couple of events such as a crew talent show. In addition, all passengers were taken on a tour of the Bridge. The voyage ended on a dramatic note with another passage through the ice-field in the Isfjorden to get to our final destination, Longyearbyen. It took all of the last day, so the scheduled landing had to be cancelled. But the ship's breaking through the ice was such an exhilarating experience that it was worth it. We had a few hours in Longyearbyen before our flight to Oslo (included in the cruise fare). The settlement has a history of coal mining and other attempts at making a profitable permanent town here, including many international disputes over sovereignty, especially between Norway and Russia. The Fram is a beautiful small ship, nicely appointed with a large observation lounge, lecture rooms, attractive public areas, a fitness room, two on-deck hot tubs, and interesting art work. Our cabin was tiny but acceptable. The service was impeccable and friendly, although with mostly open seating we didn't have much personal interaction with the dining room staff. The Expedition Team was fantastic, comprised of exceedingly competent and knowledgeable men and women. All in all, this was an incredible cruise for someone who wants to get way off the beaten path. A memorable experience all around.

Arctic Climate Voyage Trip Type: Small Ship Cruise
Once known as "Norwegian Coastal Voyage" in the U.S., Hurtigruten adopted its traditional Norwegian name a few years ago, and remains, in many minds, "The World's Most Beautiful Voyage." What Makes Them Stand Out? They operate cruises to lesser known locations and focus on providing unique nature experiences and excursions. They’ve been a leader in constantly improving how they treat the landscape and try to maintain as little harmful impact as possible. Who Travels With Them? Hurtigruten’s cruises are perfect for adventurous travelers looking to “connect with your inner explorer.” Excursions tend to be very active, and do take place in harsher environments - it will most likely be cold! And while you certainly won’t be roughing it, the Hurtigruten ships aren't the newest vessels on the seas, nor are they equipped with large numbers of amenities. But the scenery and experiences are hard to beat. Where Do They Operate? The 11 Hurtigruten ships ply the Norwegian coast from Bergen to Kirkenes, near the Russian border, making the round trip in just under two weeks (but many passengers choose to go just one way). They also run voyages to Spitsbergen (a far northern Norwegian island also known as Svalbard) and other Arctic locations, as well as Antarctica. Why Travel With Them? For spectacular views, and incredibly unique experiences ashore. You'll stop in some fascinating cities and fishing villages; sail down gorgeous fjords and view snow-capped mountains; cross the Arctic Circle; pay a visit to the Top of Europe (the northernmost point on the Continent); and watch as the ships unload supplies for the locals at each stop -- the Hurtigruten is both cruise passenger and cargo ship.

A lot was packed into 4 fun-filled days taking in stunning scenery. Travelling on a comfortable bus, our brilliant guide Ibi made sure we got to take in Iceland and its history through our many stops.
There were so many fantastic moments in this trip, though walking through the divide at Thingvellir National Park and taking in the view was spectacular. The Blue Lagoon was the perfect way to end the trip with new found friends.

Ibi really helped to make this trip with an informative and friendly style. I felt complete safe under her guidance at all times.

Be prepared to take lots of photographs and bring one will a long exposure and a tripod if you hope to shoot the northern lights. Alongside that, thermals are recommended as the wind can be icy. Good waterproofs including over-trousers are essential, especially at the falls if the weather is bad. Also try and take a walk into Reykjavik at some point so you don't miss out.

This was an amazing trip. I'd wanted to see dramatic Iceland and we got to see so many aspects of it packed into such a short trip.

I loved our ACIS trip. The biggest complaint was the economy seating on the long over night flight. Adults didn't have the availability to upgrade due to the type of seats that were purchased. We also got our seat info. fairly close to the date of departure (30 days) which made it difficult to choose seats. The airline representative said that we should have received our flight info. earlier. Everything else about our trip was exceptional. My only hesitation in booking another trip is not having a guarantee that adults could choose to pay to have seats out of economy.

I deliberately chose the circle tour but another time would rather day trips from major centres and more time in Reykjavik

Choosing an Iceland Tour Company

When choosing your Iceland tour company, consider that most Iceland tours have an active focus, and a majority of activities will be outside.

Very few Iceland tour companies fall in the “luxury” range, however it is very possible to see Iceland in comfort. Seniors interested in visiting the land of Fire and Ice, but perhaps wary of it’s adventure travel reputation, can find several suitable Iceland tours for seniors. These will focus on less walking, hardcore hiking, and feature less extreme activities. You may also spend more time exploring local towns than other Iceland tours.

Envision soaking in hot springs, walking through other worldly ice caves, gazing at the spectacular northern lights, going on a birding tour to capture a shot of the elusive puffin, meeting the famous Icelandic horses, and enjoying a glass of wine as you overlook the thundering waters of Iceland’s amazing waterfalls.

If your speed is more adventure focused, worry not. There are plenty of Iceland tour operators suited to you! Hike on lava fields, strap on some ice shoes and climb a glacier, and off-roading to explore Iceland’s dramatic landscapes.

Because Iceland has grown massively in popularity in recent years, overtourism has been a hot button issue - particularly considering the many fragile ecosystems the country has. There are a number of Iceland specific operators, as well as global operators that feature tours to Iceland - and traveling with a tour is one way to help reduce the carbon footprint phenomenon.
