What travelers are saying

"My wife and I were on the Smithsonian Journeys Splendors of Australia and New Zealand between April 13 and May 2, 2018. Smithsonian is rated by this site as Luxury travel. However, Smithsonian "farms out" the logistics for their trip to Odysseys Unlimited. Odysseys booked within country air travel with the lowest cost air carriers. Flights were cancelled from Ayers Rock to Sydney and from Queenstown New Zealand to Rotorua. Another flight was significantly delayed so that we did not arrive at our Christchurch destination until 2:00 am, making for a really tired next day. Odysseys Unlimited compensated us $400 per person for missing a day in Sydney and paid for an excursion in Auckland for missing Rotorua. This was wholly inadequate, given that these were highlights of the trip. In addition, our tour guide was rude to several people on the trip. If Smithsonian Journeys is truly a luxury travel outfit, as we had believed, then they would not be farming out travel logistics to such a chinch company as Odysseys Unlimited. We will think twice about traveling with Smithsonian again, and so should others."

The lodges on safari were wonderful, food excellent. The Breezes resort on Zanzibar was lovely and the Indian Ocean is sooooo warm! Thank you, Odyssey, for delivering on all counts!"

What travelers are saying

"Our family planned to celebrate my daughter's graduation by going to Iceland, a dream that my daughter has had for a long time. We booked and paid in full  several months in advance. Then Covid came. I called to postpone our trip but there was no answer. I tried to cancel on their website but was unable to. We were so disappointed to have to postpone our trip but it was the responsible thing to do. Finally I got a response via email on how to cancel/postpone our trip but they charged us 50% cancellation fee because it was within 30 days of travel, even though it would have been 30 days if their website was functional. They had no compassion due to Covid, etc. I was willing to accept the 10% cancellation fee, even though due to the circumstance I believe that should have been waived. It is their policy they said. It is also their policy to take 6 to 8 weeks to refund our money that they had already had  for several months. At 8 weeks we had still not received a refund. It took 5 months to receive a refund after fighting with them via a credit card dispute. Their excuse why it took so long was Covid - funny how it was unreasonable for me to be A DAY late cancelling allowing them to keep thousands of dollars but it was okay for them to take MONTHS to refund me HALF what I paid. I cant wait to travel to Iceland when it is feasable but will not be doing business with this company ever again and I highly recommend you don't do business with them either."

"Overall very good experience. Reservations were made and places were as advertised. There was a daily itinerary with more than you could do every day, so it was up to you to pick and chose, depending on your inclination and interests. This is not a "guided tour" where you just show up and all decisions are made for you, but an "interactive" vacation. It allowed us the flexibility to change the type of activities depending on the weather or if a certain type of activity was not turn out to our liking. An overall great way to see Iceland."

What travelers are saying

"In September 2018 I departed on an adventure of a lifetime, to photograph Greenland’s Scoresby Sound with Iceland Photo Tours. This 8 day tour fulfilled every expectation I had, a comfortable classic vessel to navigate the Iceberg rich waterways, deliver us to sensational land locations to explore on foot areas that truly take your breath away. Our crew on the Donna Wood couldn’t have been more helpful in getting us to the right location at the right time to capture the best image that was possible. Catering was superb from the ships galley and I am positive we all went home a few pounds heavier. A very special thanks to our tour guide Kathleen Croft for without her hard work and dedication ensuring that every individual on the tour had a full understanding of their equipment made our trip very enjoyable, she virtually guaranteed that all on the tour would go home with images that will be shown and spoken about for many years to come. On our tour the partisans’ had varied skills and experience with photography, from never have picked up camera before to competent photographs, so if you are contemplating a trip with Iceland Photo Tours you could not go wrong in having Kathleen as your tour guide. I look forward to catching up with friends made on this tour and making new ones on my next tour, thank you Iceland Photo Tours for a truly memorable tour."

What travelers are saying

"My wife and I did the six day Lofoten Islands tour offered by 50 Degrees North. The tour is simple, they provided us a rental car, accommodations for two nights each at three Rorbuer hotels scattered across the islands, and a couple of scheduled day tours. Most of the time, we were on our own to see the islands at our own pace. The islands are stunningly beautiful, and the tour planning made our travels hassle free. They even scheduled lunch for us at an organic goat farm, which may sound a little strange for a vacation like this, but that is only because you haven't tasted the cheese. (Best lunch ever!) At our request, they altered the tour slightly so that we could begin the tour in Svolvaer and end it six days later at the airport in Leknes. We can't imagine a more complete tour of the islands in six short days."

Visits

Akureyri, Blue Lagoon, Jokulsarlon, Lake Myvatn, Reykjavík, Skogafoss, Snaefellsnes Peninsula, Thingvellir National park

Highlights

  • There's a lot more to Iceland than ice (and Bjork). Ford the fjords, glaciers, volcanoes and black sand beaches, and consider adding on a visit to the renowned Blue Lagoon for a soak in the geothermal springs.
  • Spend the evening at the quirky farm town of Modrudalur – an isolated settlement and the highest inhabited place in Iceland and enjoy a home-cooked dinner at our guesthouse at Snaefellsnes.
  • Walk to the mottled blue, grey and black tongue of Vatnajokull glacier – an ice cap so large it covers eight per cent of the country – and discover the incredible Skogafoss Waterfall.
  • Glide past blue-white icebergs on an included boat tour of Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon and soak up the silence of the surrounding grey sand desert..
  • Experience the unearthly scenery at Namaskard, where steam rises from the sulphuric terrain and take a walk around the lava stacks and caves of Dimmuborgir.

"We joined the Intrepid “Real Italy Food Tour” and enjoyed it thoroughly. Our tour guide, Micol, was very knowledgeable and provided us with lots of good information. It seems Micol knew many of the staff of the venues we visited, including the pasta making class we attended. Our group of 11 travelers was extremely compatible, which greatly added to the fun and enjoyment."

"Yossef, our trip leader, was excellent. He was extremely knowledgeable and gave a very personal service. All the hotels were comfortable. What made some of them was their settings. Additional details

Iceland Tours tend to focus on the outdoors and active travel. You’ll be outside a lot, and in the elements. This doesn’t mean all tours in Iceland are about hard adventure though. It’s very possible to find tours that take it slow, use more comfortable modes of transportation, and partake in “easier” physical activity.

Iceland is home to numerous natural attractions, several national parks, waterfalls, lagoons, caves, volcanoes, and beaches. Most of these attractions have several ways they can be enjoyed making choosing your Iceland tour as much about the time of year as about the type of physical activity you’re looking for.

Choosing When to Tour Iceland

Visiting Iceland is very different in the summer vs the winter. In the summertime, you have extended sunlight, and the opportunity for more outdoor activity. It never gets overly warm in Iceland. Summer will be cool, and sometimes rainy, so be sure to bring lightweight jackets, long pants, and shoes that can get muddy. One of the biggest draws of Iceland in summer is the Midnight Sun, which occurs on June 21.

In the winter, the main draw is the Northern Lights! Planning to see the Northern Lights is tough because they don’t appear on a schedule - sometimes the fog doesn’t cooperate and they remain shrouded. But a tour in Iceland will help increase your chances of seeing the amazing aerial light show.

What languages are spoken in Iceland?

The national language in Iceland is Icelandic, an ancient Norse language that has changed little from its original forms, and remains one of the oldest spoken languages in Europe. However, it is also very common for Icelanders to speak English and Danish (which are required throughout school) and other European languages.

What is the best time to see the Northern Lights in Iceland?

The Aurora Borealis can be seen in Iceland throughout the winter, from October to April. However, the best sightings occur between December and February, and when there are no clouds.

What do I need to know about Iceland?

One of the first things to know about Iceland is that it is one of the world’s hotspots of geothermal activity. This is how the country got its nickname, the Land of Fire and Ice. You can find volcanoes all over Iceland, but only some of them remain active. These volcanoes make their presence known through the various hot springs and lava fields of the country. The only thing that makes them more beautiful is how they are contrasted by the many stunning glaciers.

Over Tourism in Iceland - is it a problem?

The short answer is yes, over tourism has begun affecting popular destinations around the world. Iceland is a very good case study. A rapid boom in popularity based on media influences (such as Game of Thrones) has caused the country to have to deal with a massive influx of tourists.

One of the most effective ways to address over tourism is actually to visit Iceland on a tour. This way of travel not only introduces you to destinations inaccessible to solo tourists but also creates safeguards against being overly harmful to the landscape. You’ll learn about the country from an experienced guide, and have a great time.

If your speed is more adventure focused, worry not. There are plenty of Iceland tour operators suited to you! Hike on lava fields, strap on some ice shoes and climb a glacier, and off-roading to explore Iceland’s dramatic landscapes.

Because Iceland has grown massively in popularity in recent years, over-tourism has been a hot button issue - particularly considering the many fragile ecosystems the country has. There are a number of Iceland specific operators, as well as global operators that feature tours to Iceland - and traveling with a tour is one way to help reduce your carbon footprint.
