Classic Machu Picchu Itineraries

Inca Trail to Machu Picchu

Perhaps the most classic Machu Picchu trip, walking the Inca Trail is a bucket list item for many. This is a challenging trip, but the reward is well worth the effort. Most Inca Trail treks take 4-5 days, though this varies.

Day 1-2, Cusco: Explore Cusco and get acclimated to the altitude. Visit cultural sites and museums to learn about the Inca before visiting Machu Picchu.

Day 3-8, Inca Trail: Embark upon the Inca trail.

Day 9-10, Machu Picchu: Arrive at the picturesque Sun Gate before the first wave of crowds. Take an in depth guided tour of the ruins, and spend free time exploring on your own. Climb the challenging Huayna Picchu for iconic pictures.

Day 5-6, Machu Picchu: Take an in depth guided tour of the ruins, and spend free time exploring on your own. Climb the challenging Huayna Picchu for iconic pictures.

Machu Picchu and the Galapagos

Many tour companies combine a trip to Machu Picchu with a tour of the Galapagos. Typically these tours range anywhere from two weeks to a full month.

Day 1-2, Cusco: Take time to adjust to the altitude. Visit Plaza de Armas, and explore the Old Inca Capital.

Day 2-3, Agua Calientes: Take the famous VistaDome scenic train ride to Agua Calientes. Along the way stop in Pisac to visit the market. Continue to Ollantaytambo for a tour of more Incan ruins before arriving in Agua Calientes. Spend the night and prepare to rise early to catch the dawn bus to Machu Picchu.

Day 4-5, Machu Picchu: Take an in depth guided tour of the ruins, and spend free time exploring on your own. Optional: climb the challenging Huayna Picchu for iconic pictures.

Day 6-7, Cusco to Lima: Return to Cusco and take a short flight to Lima - the jumping off point for your Galapagos cruise. Take a walking history tour of the city: San Francisco Church, Plaza de Armas, Government Palace.

Day 8, Quito: Leave Peru for Ecuador and head to Quito. Explore the city and see La Compania. Take a drive to the Equatorial Line Monument, where you can straddle the hemispheres.

Day 9-13, Galapagos Cruise: Enjoy a cruise of the Galapagos islands. Take in the history of Darwin’s time on the islands, which led to his groundbreaking evolution theories. Get up close and personal with wildlife as incredible and diverse as what you would see on a trip to Costa Rica, and learn about the delicate ecology on the islands from an expert.

As a lone traveller I was worried about travelling South America. I realised from the moment I arrived at SA that I had no need to worry. Someone was there to meet me at the airport and from there in I had i clear instructions on the plan and when and where to meet everyone. Not at any point did I feel worried. I enjoyed every second of my trip. June 2015

Galápagos Central Islands & Inca Discovery

I have enjoyed every second of my trip with G adventures. It is hard to explain to anyone just how great my experience was. I could only recommend that they book the trip and see for themselves. It was the perfect trip. There is no recommendations I could make to improve the trip. Although it was very tiring, I woke up each and every morning excited for the day ahead. Every member of the team I met through Gadventures were friendly and helpful. I'm already seeking a new adventure with them. Read more

Off the Beaten Path Peru Bolivia Tour 12 Day – The Best of Bolivia & Peru

Thank goodness I found this operator. My husband and I wanted a customized tour of Cusco; the Sacred Valley; Machu Picchu; Puno; Lake Titicaca; La Paz, Bolivia; and the Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia. They helped us craft the perfect trip. We travelled last July 2014 for 11 days and what an astounding adventure! I have since recommended them to a friend who thought they were fantastic too! Our guides and drivers were all kind, friendly and knowledgeable. Jesus [the guide] took good care of us in Cusco and the Sacred Valley, and Domingo personally saw us off to the Puno train (one of our favorite experiences). The level of professionalism, reliability and kindness was exceptional.
We wanted a blend of Andean culture and ruins, arts and crafts, and seeing the natural beauty of the region. All of our guides were outstanding, the connections and transfers went off without out a hitch, and the hotels were comfortable. My husband was amazed at how perfectly our trip played out! We loved Cusco, Ollaytzntambo, Moray, Salineras, Chinchero, Machu and Huanya Picchu, the train to Puno, the 2- day tour of Lake Titicaca, and the otherworldly Salar de Uyuni. Wow!

Inca Ausangate Trek

Every transfer was seamless, and the trip itself was phenomenal. Almost everyone in my tour group had previously done several trips with World Expeditions and all had great things to say, so I was immediately put at ease that I was in good hands. Our guide Jose Pepelucho Corpancho was not only knowledgeable about the area but he also knew personally the families we passed on the trek, which afforded us a more intimate and privileged experience in terms of interaction with locals, and putting in perspective the landscape and geography in relation to peoples’ daily lives. It was evident that the team of staff (Tambo Treks) worked diligently to maintain high standards on the trip and I am still a bit in awe of how such fantastic meals came out of a tent, at high altitude. Thanks so much for an unparalleled vacation in both itinerary and execution. Read more

Southern Peru Journey- 13 Days/ 12 Nights

FSJourneys offers a travel experience like no other. The focus is personal growth and reflection. Small groups make traveling intimate, and connecting with others easy. I traveled by myself on this trip and met others who did the same. Kristie works hard to bring people together, yet allows for the personal space we all may also need when engaging in a meditative yoga retreat. There are opportunities to enjoy things in such an intimate setting. I even had a private driver for a hike others opted out of. The value for the price is very high, and you don't realize this until you get there. We stayed in a variety of places, each accomodation offering something unique. Sometimes luxury, sometimes home stay or lack of heat. We ate so healthy, I lost 10#s without even trying. Healthy foods and walking in the Andes is the perfect way to feel in shape and like you are doing something good for your body.
One must be flexible when traveling in Peru, and there were some activities which were changed or canceled due to circumstances both inside the group, and out, but it's part of the experience when traveling to areas that are more remote. Don't get upset if the wifi doesn't really work. ;-) It's okay.... there is so much beauty all around, you will want to keep your attention at 100% in the present moment!
PachaMama is Mother Earth. You will learn much about local customs, and participate in amazing ceremonies in an intimate setting. After this trip, I imagine other tours "small group" settings may feel overwhelming.
Kristie connects to her clients, and in my experience... it became a tour of traveling friends.... what a great experience.

Royal Galapagos Company Reviews

A review my recent Galápagos adventure on the Natural Paradise..

The good: them setting up the hotel, flights and transportation in Ecuador. Smooth and professional. The food was great! Every meal was delicious. My room (cabin 7) was large with a big bathroom and a balcony. They crew was great and accommodating.

Needs improvement: 1) cleanliness of my room. My first night there it was clear that someone had departed that morning..and I noticed the cabin wasn't cleaned as thoroughly as I would like. The towels were clean but had some stains on them. 2) the ship is new but there are broken items everywhere. There was a gap between the roof frame and my balcony. No blinds on the balcony door (which was a major issue with ship lights and sun rises). Floors were scuffed, deck boards faded. Looks like a lot of routine maintenance hasn't been done. 3) some of the excursions. Many times I felt the naturalist was taking his time (over) explaining a lot of things to fill the time. I do appreciate you changing the last day to include the tortoises!

The bad: the SUPER loud engine and generator. There was never a moment of silence on the ship. And when the motor turned on or the anchor went up or down, everyone on the ship wakes up.
