Travel Style Travel Style Relaxed A lot of free time, with very few inclusions. Ideal for independent and/or low-key travelers and cruisers.
Full on For those looking to maximize their sight seeing time. You thrive on a packed day’s schedule from 8 am to 6pm, with some (but limited) free time. Most activities and meals included.
Mixed You will have solid amounts of both free time and structured time with some activities and meals included.

Trip Type Trip Type Group Tour Groups are between 25-60 people, typically ~30-40. Usually there will be many opportunities to split off and enjoy meals and excursions in smaller groups. This is the most economical way to travel, saving up to 40% versus booking the same itinerary yourself.
Small Group Tour Small groups are usually defined as between 10 and 24 travelers, often less. If you're the kind of person who enjoys more intimate experiences and personal service this is a good choice. All else being equal you will pay a premium for this style vs a larger group tour.
River Cruise These vessels are smaller than most ocean cruisers, limiting which amenties are available. Passenger counts can vary. One of the biggest advantages of a river cruise is the ability to dock at smaller ports and local villages.
Small Ship Cruise Small ship cruises usually have a max passenger count of 500. The primary purpose of these trips is to spend time off the vessel in local ports (e.g. Mediterranean) or experiencing nature (e.g Galapagos or Antarctica). Cabins can vary from budget to luxury.
Private Guided Private tours give you the undivided attention of a guide, and often involve special access to sites and unique experiences not available to larger groups. This is a great option for families, couples, and small friend groups. Expect to pay a bit more for the extra service.
Self Guided / Independent Tour A travel company plans your itinerary and arranges all the logistics including lodging, local activities, and transportantion. You have the flexibility of a solo trip while still getting the convience and time savings of expert planning. Get 90% of the benefits of a tour, without a guide.
Vacation / Holiday Package Similar to a self guided tour, this usually involves a home base, such as a hotel or resort, with packaged activities and day tours as a part of the stay.
Large Ship Cruise This is the "floating city" experience, with multiple ways to enjoy your vacation aboard the ship as much as on land. Ships are multiple floors, provide several activities, culinary, and shopping options. They often make fewer stops and have less time available for shore excursions.

Itinerary Focus

Lodging Level Lodging Level Camping Typically involves most nights sleeping in tents (sometimes permanent tented sites) or in rustic cabins and lodges.
Basic - 2 star You'll stay in no-frills, but clean and comfortable, hotels or guesthouses. A 'Basic' trip might also involve a few nights of camping.
Value - 3 star Mid-range budget with accommodations ranging from comfortable lodges, guesthouses, and homestays to three star hotels.
Premium - 4 star 3 to 4 star western hotel equivalents. While not all lodging will be 'luxury' they will be quite comfortable by western standards.
Luxury - 5 star The highest level of comfort and service. All accomodations are in four or five star hotels, boutique lodges or high-end homestays.

Let me start by saying that I did not even get the chance to go on this trip. A week prior to my trip to Spain, an immediate family member of mine become ill with imminent death. I was unable under the circumstances to travel and wanted to cancel my trip and was willing to reschedule for a later date or get a credit. This was a very expensive trip for both my sister and I, taking us years to save up for it. The response we received from our agent is that Contiki is not willing to postpone the travel, even after we were willing to pay an extra fee. This tells me that this company is GREEDY and HEARTLESS. My family member has since passed away, 3 days before my departure date which was supposed to be on July 2nd. I even went to check the Contiki website and was shocked to see that my trip which was previously full, has now opened up spots to fill our place. Now, not only are they keeping the money of 2 young hardworking people, but also making money off filling our spots!! I've never experienced such injustice and mistreatment from a company in my entire life! This company has no sympathy and ZERO understanding for a situation as devastating as death. My sister and I were so excited to go on this trip and were very upset by the timing of our situation... but how can you control when a loved one will pass??????? SHAME ON YOU CONTIKI. If nothing is done to resolve this unfair policy, I will make sure not to recommend your tours to anyone.

I took this trip in October of 2018. Our tour guide in Spain spoke very poor English, and it was very difficult to understand her. She also did not know much about Spain (she was from Cuba), so we got very little information from her. This was very disappointing. The local day guides were better informed and easier to understand. Expect very long hours on the bus, with short stops along the way. Scenery will be spectacular. Lunches will frequently be at truck stops where you will line up with busloads of other tourists for bathrooms and pre-packaged sandwiches. Day tours will be very crowded, and you will often be herded like cattle through the streets. The ferry ride to Tangiers was fun, but getting on and off the ferry would be difficult for someone who can't get around easily. We saw two people fall and get injured. Our tour guide in Morocco was excellent, and very well informed. We had local guides for the excursions in places we stopped. Expect to be guided through the Suk in Fes to four designated places to shop, and you will not be allowed to shop anywhere else in the Suk. The same is true for the tour of the Suk in Marrakech and the old city in Toledo. Shopping was allowed only at high end places. If you aren't interested in shopping, this will be a big waste of your time. Your main meals will mostly be at mediocre buffets in the hotels you stay in. Drink only bottled water, lots of people in our group got sick, mostly in Morocco. You will be given the opportunity to pay extra (around $110 Euros) for a dinner and show in Fes and Marrakech, both of which were enjoyable, but if you choose only one, do the one in Fes. You will see a lot of both Spain and Morocco. The buildings are breathtaking. You will have both panoramic (bus) tours and walking tours. Walking tours are long, varying 1 - 2 hours. My favorite places were Ronda, Seville, Granada and Toledo. Take advantage of free time in Granada to see the Cathedral. If you do this tour, invest in a guide book to read along with way.

Buyer Beware: CostSaver is NOT Trafalgar, regardless of how much they like to conflate the two companies!

If I had never traveled on my own, or never gone on a group tour, or even never gone on a Trafalgar tour before, I might have thought this one was okay. However, I have done all three, and this tour pales in comparison. Even some of my fellow travelers on this trip who've never been on a tour before were a bit taken aback and felt duped by this one. Here's why:

Trafalgar now owns Insight (a higher end group tour company) and Costsaver (a lower end one). Insight Tours doesn't use the name Trafalgar--they don't need to. They hold their own reputation. Costsaver, on the other hand, has the Trafalgar name virtually everywhere . . . letterhead, email addresses, invoices, etc. They are banking on Trafalgar's reputation to prop them up is my guess, as they certainly don't hold their own.

First, they put you in perfectly adequate lodging, but it's in the middle of nowhere, quite literally. Our hotel in Barcelona required two forms of public transportation to reach, and the only thing near it was a gas station. Seriously. Our hotel in Madrid was not even in Madrid; it was in a commercial trucking/warehouse/shipping area and was a 37-euro cab ride each way to Madrid. The hotel clerk said that, other than a bar next door (which proved terrible), there was NOTHING in walking distance. Luckily, the hotel in Lisbon was at a metro stop, so we were able to navigate the public transport and spend some time in Lisbon.

Soooo . . . if you don't pay for the non-included excursions, you are in effect--as many of us complained--a hostage! Stuck in a hotel on the Outskirts of Nowhere. If you do plan to go on all the excursions, plan on spending an additional 550-600 euros, and expect some pretty mediocre food at the restaurants on those excursions. I can't see how they think they are saving you any money at all.

As for the excursions themselves, some were great, but some should The tour guide handed out the excursion checklist while we were on the bus and told us we had to choose which ones we wanted to go on and hand it in to him in a few hours. Then he proceeded to sell, sell, sell the excursions like a used-car salesman. One gentleman on the tour said he's been a commission-only salesman for many years, and he'd never seen such aggressive and pushy salesmanship. This was a very common sentiment among the others as well.

The trip I went on with Trafalgar a few years ago was nothing like this. Please do not be confused: Costsaver is NOT Trafalgar. I will never make this mistake again.
