What travelers are saying

"We joined the Intrepid “Real Italy Food Tour” and enjoyed it thoroughly. Our tour guide, Micol, was very knowledgeable and provided us with lots of good information. It seems Micol knew many of the staff of the venues we visited, including the pasta making class we attended. Our group of 11 travelers was extremely compatible, which greatly added to the fun and enjoyment."

What travelers are saying

"Our family of four, including two adult children, took the Bicycling: Day Trips to Paradise in Canada. This trip is entirely outsourced to the owners of the inn, there are no Road Scholar employees involved in the trip. Two of us have taken bicycle trips all over the world and the bicycling component of this trip was disorganized, haphazard and almost unsafe. We all filled out forms giving details regarding our bicycle fitting months before the trip. On the first day, the leader Stephen, went around the room and asked the same questions and said everyone would get fitted in the morning before we began the first ride. The morning brought a rack of bikes, all different types in various levels of readiness. There were road bikes, hybrid bikes, mountain bikes and e-bikes. The rides were all on paved surfaces and the mountain bikes were heavy and the additional suspension added weight. The bike I received had rust on the chain and rear sprocket. When I asked about it, was told they were waiting for another van to show up with tools and equipment. Once it arrived, they gave me the lubricant to spray on the rust. My wife’s bike would not shift into the high gear on the front sprocket. Instead of adjusting the derailleur, they suggested spraying it with lubricant. Our one son is over six feet and needed a larger frame bike, even though he detailed it in the bike form months ago, there was no bike to fit him. One of the guides, then went home and brought a larger bike that was a full suspension mountain bike for him. The bike was very heavy, hard to control on the road and he felt unsafe. After two days, one of the guides convinced Stephen that they could adjust a hybrid bike to fit him. Clearly there was no work done to prepare the bikes for the trip. Many of the bikes needed adjusting and all needed lubricant to function easily. For every day, there was a tray of snacks placed out for us to take along the ride. None of the bikes had any baskets or attached bags, so if you didn’t bring a small day pack, there was no way to carry the snacks. For lunch on the rides, they brought exactly one sandwich for each rider. Since most of us get hungry while doing a day of exercise, it would have been helpful to have a few extras. On one day, they ran out of sandwiches and one of the leaders that were riding with us did not get lunch. Do NOT take this trip if you are expecting it to be a bicycling trip. We have used VBT and Discovery Bicycle Tours many times over the past 25 years and they are excellent bike tour companies. Lastly, after sharing these details with Road Scholar after the trip, their response was weak at best. After doing the full reviews and having to call them, their response was to give us $200 credit after spending $8000 on this trip. Not only was that insulting, they assumed that I would take another trip with their organization."

What travelers are saying

"Sad to see a once good tour company stumble and fall into mediocrity. That’s Tauck post-Covid. My May 2023 tour of Normandy, Brittany and the Loire Valley was done on the cheap by Tauck, yet cost me thousands of dollars extra as a solo traveler on a special small-group tour.

5-star hotels switched to 3 and 4 (without any compensation or explanation)… many more meals “on your own”… lots of “self-guided” tours of museums and chateaux and castles we knew nothing about… airline quality “rubber chicken” dinners, not in hotel restaurants, but in sad and isolated business convention spaces… poorly-trained newer Tour Directors (like the one on this tour) with limited experience traveling outside her tiny Canadian village or dealing with people from diverse backgrounds. She even confessed that this was a second gig job that took her away from her own business back home! You get what Tauck pays for, but unfortunately, not what YOU pay for.

Speaking to a “Guest Relations” agent was comically pointless. She tried to make everything my fault, which I now understand is par for the course with the “new” post-Covid Tauck. Please reconsider spending huge amounts of your hard-earned money on a tour company that has lost its way and no longer delivers."

What travelers are saying

"We have loved Gate 1 and always sing their praises. We've been on 7 tours with another one booked for fall. We were supposed to leave for Ecuador this week, however the country is in a 60 day state of emergency with the escape of 2 infamous gang members. Tourists are advised to stay indoors and there is a daily curfew from 11pm-5am. (our flight was to land at 11:15pm). Our trip included stays in 2 of the main cities of unrest. There have been shootings, car bombings, hostage taking, closing of embassies, and other countries issuing do not travel warnings. Other tour companies have cancelled tours or offered refunds or rescheduling. Travel insurance does not cover wars or civil unrest, but we are clearly afraid to go there. Both we and our travel agent have reached out multiple times with our concerns and asked if we could reschedule or get some sort of credit. We continue to get the same reply either in person or via email...Gate 1 has your safety as our highest priority and we feel you are safe ("they are not targeting tourists") and your itinerary should not be impacted. What? Their highest priority is $ and not our safety. There is no way that's the tour we anticipated. We cancelled the trip and took a 90% penalty, loss of deposit, and $276 airline penalty. It's a LOT of money, but we would have been terrified, and it's not worth getting hurt or worse. Sorry, but it's not the company I want to do business with in the future."

Additional details

Is Malta Expensive?

Malta is pretty average across Western European cities. If you’re comparing it to the likes of London, Paris, and Geneva, it’s more affordable than the major cities. The costs seem pretty similar to Spain and Italy, but compared to Eastern Europe, it’s fairly expensive.

Summer months are going to be more expensive than off-season or even winter months, so it may be worth it to consider going in the cooler months to get a better deal. While it may be a bit too chilly to swim in the water, winter averages are often in the upper 50s to low 60s.

What Language do they Speak in Malta?

There are two official languages in Malta: Maltese and English. Both are spoken fairly fluently across the country. Among other Maltese people, you’re likely to hear them talking in Maltese. For tourists, English is well known and often spoken.

Common phrases in Malta

Locals always appreciate it when visitors make an attempt to speak their local language! Of course, they don’t expect you to be fluent, but a little effort goes a long way.

Here are some of the common Maltese phrases:

Helloà Hello (Pronounced hello)

Welcomeà Merhba (Pronounced Mer-heba)

Good Morningà Bongu (Pronounced Bon-ju)

How are you?à Kif Int? (Pronounced Kiff int)

What is your name?à  X’jismek? (Pronounced Shee-yis-mek)

My name isà Jisimni (Pronounced Yis-im-nee)

Pleaseà Jekk joghgbok (Pronounced Yek yoh-jbok)

Thank youà Grazzi (Pronounced Grats-ee)

Do you speak English?à Titkellem bl-Ingliz (Pronounced Tit-kell-em blin-gleez)

I don’t understandà  Ma nifhimx (Pronounced Maa ni-fimsh)

What is the weather like in Malta?

Overall, the weather in Malta is pretty ideal year-round. Winter averages in the low 60s, with spring and fall averaging 70 degrees. Summer is pretty hot, but you’re on an island! Cool down from the summer highs of around 90 degrees by taking a dip in the Mediterranean.

Summer boasts hot sunny days. Winter brings lots of rainy days. Late Spring and Early fall bring enough sunny days and warm enough sea temperature for comfortable swimming.

Best time to go to Malta

The best time to go to Malta is easily the summer. There are many outdoor activities, great beach time, and plenty of water activities. The water is warm, everything is open (some activities shut down in the winter due to weather and lack of visitors). This brings a lot of visitors. If you’re trying to still soak in the great weather but don’t want to deal with as many people, consider a trip in May or October.

Things are opening up for peak season (or getting ready to shut down in the fall), weather is still sunny and pleasant, and you get better prices than summer. If you aren’t requiring water activity, April and early November are still ideal times to go. Winter is the off-season, and reasonably so. Cooler temperatures and increased rainfall results in a drop of visitors. Winds are high.

Christmas is an exciting time to visit, as is February for the annual carnival. If you don’t mind getting a little wet, Malta is still worth a visit in the winter. If you’re looking for a quiet and relaxing holiday, the best time to visit Malta is going to be in the fall.

What to Pack for Malta

-Sun protection. The sun is hot and Malta has over 300 days of sunshine. Be prepared by bringing sunscreen, sunglasses, and a good sun hat to keep your body covered and protected.

-Closed toe shoes. Especially if you want to go out and walk in the countryside, you’ll be met with limestone and shrubs. Not ideal for flip flops or other open-toed shoes.

-Flip flops – on another note, bring a pair of open-toe shoes. You’re on an island. Flip off the flops and enjoy some beach time. If you’re not on the sand, at least you’re prepared for warmer weather, where you want your feet to feel free.

-Cover ups - Some Malta sites require that shoulders and knees are covered, so make sure you bring a shirt or scarf that covers your shoulders, and a skirt, dress, or pants that cover your knees. If you’re dressed inappropriately, you may be refused entry.

-Layers - Malta can be sunny and warm, but chilly when the sun drops. Since you’re near the water, you can feel the breeze, making it feel colder than it actually is. A light jacket is smart to bring if you’re taking a ferry or boat ride.
