What travelers are saying

"Until Covid clears, I would steer clear of Backroads. We were partially through their June 2020 Costa Rica tour when a guest tested Covid positive. She and her husband were isolated. The rest of the group were offered wimpy masks. Nobody was offered Covid testing daily and masks were not required of the guests or staff. The guides kept repeating "not in the CDC guidelines." Our group of six decided that the Backroads response was inadequate so returned home mid-excursion. The hotel and food was excellent, but the provided bikes were inadequate. The front derailleurs were poorly adjusted, and most of the riders had the chains come off during the first ride. Hikes or bike rides were conducted in downpours. Disappointed for charging such a premium price."

Visits

Ait Benhaddou, Casablanca, Marrakech

Highlights

  • Pre-2005, you wouldn't have been able to spend a night in holy moulay idriss if you weren't a muslim. these days you can stay with an awesome local family and eat their delicious home-cooked fare no matter your beliefs
  • It's easy to get lost in a labyrinth (think less david bowie film, more medieval maze), especially when there are enticing distractions at every turn. never fear, your local guide knows the city of fes like a lifelong friend
  • How about tasting some berber whisky? even better, how about learning how to prepare this traditional drink? learn from the experts on one of the exclusive demonstrations
  • Don't get in a hoof when you're offered a camel burger in meknes. like all good food in the medina, this exotic lunch is cooked before your eyes at a hole-in-the-wall restaurant
  • Sleep under the stars in the sahara, watch the sun rise over the dunes, ride a camel through the desert and explore the spectacular todra gorge. is this all a dream?

What travelers are saying

"Butterfield and Robinson just planned and executed a great, great trip for us to the Amalfi coast. All the services and hotels were wonderful and the guides were great fun and and well informed. Many nice surprises along the way and an itinerary we would have had trouble putting together on our own was effortless. All guides were well trained the transportation and drivers were polite and on time. The recommended hotels were amazing. We loved every minute of our vacation."

What travelers are saying

"Every part of our tour was magnificent and well planned out to perfection by Firebird's agent, Julia Hardy. All of the tour guides in Rome, Pompeii, and on the Amalfi Coast were friendly and experts in their knowledge of the areas we were visiting, My daughter and I especially appreciated that our daily tours did not consume all of our time, so we were able to explore on our own and create special memories of our time in Rome and Sorrento. Also our hotel accommodations were superb in both Rome and Sorrento. The hotel complex in Sorrento was unique and rich in history. All the staff at both hotel were welcoming and helpful. Without a doubt I will use your company in the future as I explore the world and have already recommended Firebird Tours to several of my friends. Thank you so much for this very memorable experience. Every part of our trip exceeded our expectations. Your company is fabulous."

What travelers are saying

"We just returned from a memorable 10-day trip to Morocco, customized for our group of 4 by Morocco Tours. From first contact with Brian in the US, through the process of customizing our trip, handling the logistics with Bethany, and the tour itself, Morocco Tours was always professional, responsive, timely, attentive to detail and to our needs, and ready to help. They set up an itinerary that included Fes, Marrakech, Rabat, Essaouira, and stops in between such as the Roman ruins of Volubilis. Each riad or hotel was unique and a treat in itself, and we were able to sample a variety of great food through the restaurants the company chose. Our guide, Youssef Maamri, drove us everywhere and stayed with us throughout, always understanding, helpful and accommodating. His pride and love for his country were apparent in his infectious enthusiasm as he educated us about Moroccan history and culture. We feel we have made a friend! Thanks to the professionalism of the company and its excellent staff, we have come back with wonderful memories and a new appreciation for the ancient culture of Morocco and its people."

What travelers are saying

"I can't say enough good things about your experience with this company. Good communication all around, both with the agency and with the driver. It's been a month since we returned and I am still savoring our experiences. Private tour is absolutely the way to go. No stress whatsoever, well attended by our driver Achraf Nouri, who was friendly, knowledgeable and truly made our trip unparalleled. The Riads were an oasis in and of themselves. And yes, prepare for steps and stairs, rooftop relaxation, spa treatments and the kindest people, who are eager for you to love their country. Sights, sounds, tastes and smells... Morocco with Experience it Tours... Highest recommendation!!"

Marrakech Tour Selection Trips

  • Do you plan on going to Marrakech to relax and soak in the culture, or do you plan on being active? If you want to be active on your trip, definitely consider camping the Sahara or going on a cycling tour of the city. If you want to relax, maybe splurge on a trip with premium accommodation -- this way, your hotel will likely reflect the beautiful architectural style of the city, and you will be fully immersed.
  • Marrakech is well known for its delicious cuisine (which some consider to be a perfect blend of African, Jewish, and French cooking) and also its wines. Because many Muslims in Marrakech don’t drink, it may be especially hard to do wine tasting on your own. If you care about the culinary heritage of Marrakech, we recommend you go on a wine and culinary tour.
  • Marrakech is best known for its cultural attractions, and as a result many tours going there are not physically demanding. This makes Marrakech a popular destination amongst the 50+ crowd, and those simply looking for a trip with an easy physical level.

Additional details

Is Marrakech safe?

Many tourists have heard that there are Marrakech travel warnings, however, the U.S. government currently only has a Level 1 Travel Advisory for Morocco (exercising normal precaution). The short answer to this question is yes, it can be, although you do need to be aware of a few things.

While Marrakech does not have a high crime rate, your biggest safety concern while visiting this city will be petty theft. Pickpocketing and bag snatching can and do happen when the victim is not paying attention, especially in crowded places, like the open air markets or popular tourist sites.

Another thing to keep in mind are potential scams. These are relatively common, but can be easily avoided. When someone appears to be doing something out of the kindness of their heart, like helping you find your way, they oftentimes expect a tip. Not only this, but they may ask for quite a bit of money, and become upset if you don't pay up.

The best way to avoid this by any circumstance is to settle your fees for anything ahead of time; for example, negotiate the price of your rickshaw ride before you get in, not after, and be try not to accept “help” from men who seem too eager to give it.

Finally, all of Morocco (not just Marrakech) does have a problem with female harassment. While this is not usually dangerous, it can be upsetting and is best avoided. Some of the ways to reduce unwanted attention is to dress like the locals do: this means covering up your arms, and wearing a lengthy skirt that reaches at least your knees (a maxi skirt would be even better). Sunglasses can prevent accidental eye contact, which can be interpreted as flirting in Morocco.

Of course, the best way to avoid all of these problems is by going on a guided tour of Marrakech. Your guide will know the city inside and out, and thieves, hawkers, and catcallers are less likely to make a move if they see you are with a local.

What to Eat in Marrakech

  1. Mint Tea. A delicious glass of Moroccan mint tea is the go-to drink in Marrakech. This is sold at most cafés, and served with plenty of sugar, though depending on where you have a cup, they may have put their own unique spin on it.
  2. Couscous. Although this starch is now commonplace worldwide, it is native to Morocco and should be easy to add as a side to any meal.
  3. Tagine. This Moroccan staple is a stew made in a clay pot. It can meat based or vegetarian, and is served in the pot it was cooked in with a conical clay cover over it.
  4. Pastille. I will always have the memory of when I first tried this dish, made essentially chicken in flaky pastry dough, with powdered sugar on top. It’s incredibly delicious, the sweet and salty flavors go perfectly together.
  5. Brochettes. This the Moroccan version of kebab. It’s a typical street food, with the skewered meat being cooked on a smoky grill in open market.
To make sure you don't miss any of these classics, and try a whole lot more, go on a culinary tour of Marrakech

Marrakech Weather

July and August are the hottest months in Marrakech, with temperatures soaring up to the mid 80’s (Fahrenheit) on average. The coldest months are January and December, where temperatures average in the high 50’s.

As a result, the best times to visit Marrakech are during the spring and autumn, where the temperature is most pleasant and you can avoid the tourist crowds. You also avoid the main holiday season that takes place in the winter, when both Christmas and Ramadan is celebrated.
