SEA KAYAK BAJA

  • Book a Sea Kayak Baja trip while you can! Just because it's winter doesn't automatically mean you have to become a hermit. When someone asks what you did over your winter break, how amazing would it be to say that you spent a week or two paddling surprisingly warm, crystal seas; taking in spectacular coastal views, and exploring lands that are part island, part desert? Not to mention that throughout all of this, your eyes were met with towering volcanic slopes; red, dusty desert and water as blue as Kool-Aid.
  • Explore the Sea of Cortez's waters offer some of the best opportunities to spot dolphins, sea lions and whales in their natural environment. There is just something more thrilling about getting to see these animals in the wild as compared to an aquarium or zoo. Nowhere else can you kayak this close to manta rays and schools of neon/rainbow colored fish, and it isn't just below your boat where the creatures roam; flying overhead is an assortment of frigate birds, blue-footed boobies and sea pelicans to feast your eyes on.
  • Experience the plant world, the islands of the Sea of Cortez in Baja, Mexico make for a gardener's delight. Being that these are desert islands, it's not unexpected that there should be a cactus or two, but these aren't your average, middle-of-nowhere cacti: Baja's cacti are HUGE! Anywhere that you choose to hike on these gorgeous islands is another opportunity to take in the diverse plant life and breathtaking views. Canyons, coves, caves and coastlines; all courtesy of Cortez and all spectacular in their own right.
  • Enjoy there will be a lot of "firsts" on your sea kayak Baja trip, including, perhaps, the first time you'll have ever encountered Earth's largest animal. If you were to line up five of our sea kayaks, it still wouldn't do a blue whale justice when it comes to its massive size. These endangered mammals migrate to the area each winter in search of tasty crustacean snacks. Fin, humpback and sei sightings are also likely, making for a real "whale of a time" when it comes to whale watching!
  • We feature five, six, seven and eight day itineraries for getting around these fabulous islands. Our Baja kayak tours are self- and motorboat-supported and take you through the beautiful Islas of Danzante and Carmen specifically. We always begin in Loreto and include arrival and departure days for your comfort.
  • Enjoy the wondered exactly how a camping and kayaking tour goes down, it basically turns the humble kayak into a suitcase. There might be a motorboat included to cart gear, food and other supplies ahead of your tour group in addition to the panga, which hauls all of our belongings and coolers. You can view a slideshow here to see a sample trip in action.

Highlights
  • Baja kayaking in the crown jewel of the Sea of Cortez: Carmen Island. Cliffs of red-hued basalt rising sharply out of the sea and the bold outlines of towering cacti provide the backdrop for paddling sea kayaks 60 miles on this little known, classic 9-day circumnavigation of Baja California’s Isla Carmen, the largest island in Loreto Bay National Marine Park in the Sea of Cortez (Gulf of California).
  • While visitors frequent the southern tip of Isla Carmen, the northern part of the island is a place few humans will ever set foot. On this unique paddle, you'll have a chance to snorkel with brilliant king angelfish and lobster, watch plunge-diving blue-footed booties, and search for 60-foot whale sharks – the world’s largest fish.
  • You'll even find a historic element on this wildlife and nature tour. Mid-way around the island, you'll make a brief stop at Salinas Bay to visit an abandoned 19th century salt mine and coral chapel.
  • A two-day paddle rounding the island’s remote north shore leads to Balandra Bay, where you can hike an arroyo into the island’s desert interior past saguaro-like cardon cactus and wild figs in the company of desert iguanas and big-horned sheep.
  • From your tented camps in sheltered coves, watch vermillion skies as they illuminate the banded layers of the Sierra de la Giganta range, the plume of a whale lingering in the still air, and leaping manta rays flopping back into the glassy water as guides dish out margaritas and tasty chili rellenos.
