What travelers are saying

"We joined the Intrepid “Real Italy Food Tour” and enjoyed it thoroughly. Our tour guide, Micol, was very knowledgeable and provided us with lots of good information. It seems Micol knew many of the staff of the venues we visited, including the pasta making class we attended. Our group of 11 travelers was extremely compatible, which greatly added to the fun and enjoyment."

What travelers are saying

"It's hard to describe how lucky we are to have been able to work with Stephanie in planning our honeymoon to Japan. From the very beginning, Stephanie was friendly, flexible, and an absolute wealth of knowledge. We had several meetings with her leading up to our trip to come up with the perfect itinerary. Throughout this, Stephanie was mindful of our budget, without sacrificing anything. During our trip, Audley was available at all hours to help with anything and everything which was such a relief to know we had that resource available to us. I truly cannot imagine having planned this trip without all of Stephanie's guidance and knowledge- and cannot imagine taking another big trip like this without the help of Audley. Thank you again!"

What travelers are saying

"Our family of four, including two adult children, took the Bicycling: Day Trips to Paradise in Canada. This trip is entirely outsourced to the owners of the inn, there are no Road Scholar employees involved in the trip. Two of us have taken bicycle trips all over the world and the bicycling component of this trip was disorganized, haphazard and almost unsafe. We all filled out forms giving details regarding our bicycle fitting months before the trip. On the first day, the leader Stephen, went around the room and asked the same questions and said everyone would get fitted in the morning before we began the first ride. The morning brought a rack of bikes, all different types in various levels of readiness. There were road bikes, hybrid bikes, mountain bikes and e-bikes. The rides were all on paved surfaces and the mountain bikes were heavy and the additional suspension added weight. The bike I received had rust on the chain and rear sprocket. When I asked about it, was told they were waiting for another van to show up with tools and equipment. Once it arrived, they gave me the lubricant to spray on the rust. My wife’s bike would not shift into the high gear on the front sprocket. Instead of adjusting the derailleur, they suggested spraying it with lubricant. Our one son is over six feet and needed a larger frame bike, even though he detailed it in the bike form months ago, there was no bike to fit him. One of the guides, then went home and brought a larger bike that was a full suspension mountain bike for him. The bike was very heavy, hard to control on the road and he felt unsafe. After two days, one of the guides convinced Stephen that they could adjust a hybrid bike to fit him. Clearly there was no work done to prepare the bikes for the trip. Many of the bikes needed adjusting and all needed lubricant to function easily. For every day, there was a tray of snacks placed out for us to take along the ride. None of the bikes had any baskets or attached bags, so if you didn’t bring a small day pack, there was no way to carry the snacks. For lunch on the rides, they brought exactly one sandwich for each rider. Since most of us get hungry while doing a day of exercise, it would have been helpful to have a few extras. On one day, they ran out of sandwiches and one of the leaders that were riding with us did not get lunch. Do NOT take this trip if you are expecting it to be a bicycling trip. We have used VBT and Discovery Bicycle Tours many times over the past 25 years and they are excellent bike tour companies. Lastly, after sharing these details with Road Scholar after the trip, their response was weak at best. After doing the full reviews and having to call them, their response was to give us $200 credit after spending $8000 on this trip. Not only was that insulting, they assumed that I would take another trip with their organization."

What travelers are saying

"Egypt is the most amazing destination. it was a trip of a lifetime. Trafalgar made sure our tour saw all the most important places, and with the most knowledgeable Egyptologist who kept us safe, engaged, all while having alot of fun! I was concerned before I left home, but quickly my fears were laid to rest. We were met by Mo at the airport, who seamlessly got us to our destination. The hotel, cruise, food, stateroom, staff and entertainment were fantastic. And what a value! I already miss Hany Attia, Lionel Richie in the M/S miriam souvenir shop, and Mo, as well as our new Habibi from the tour. What a blast. I dont think i could ever top this vacation Thank you again. It was a trip of a lifetime."

Additional details

Where is Montenegro?

Montenegro is located in southeastern Europe, or commonly known as the Balkans, on the Adriatic Sea coast. Montenegro is surrounded by other Balkan countries of Croatia, Albania, and Serbia.

Is Montenegro Safe?

In one word, yes. Montenegro is very safe for families and solo travelers alike. Also, the people of Montenegro are known for their warm and friendly nature to all visitors.

Montenegro has a very rich religious history and some of its most historic sites are churches and mosques. It’s recommended to when visiting religious buildings to dress appropriately out of respect.

Also, as Montenegro has some very popular tourist sites, you should be aware of pickpocketers in the busier areas.

Montenegro Weather

Montenegro has two main landscapes, the coast and the mountains, that affects its climate. The coastal regions of the country have a typical Mediterranean climate with dry, warm summers and cool winters.

If you are traveling farther inland and visiting the mountainous regions of the country, you should expect cooler climates all year round with snow during the winter. Skiiers and snowboarders will enjoy the snowy mountain resorts of Kolasin and Zabljak.

The shoulder seasons, spring and fall, are also determined by the terrain. Shoulder seasons on the coast are very mild, while the mountains are cooler and rainier.

A Few Travel Tips for Montenegro

The Euro isn’t used in most of the countries in the Balkans with the countries retaining their own national currency. However, Montenegro does use the Euro. If you are on a tour of the Balkans and Montenegro is included, make sure to bring along some Euros for your time in the country.

With Montenegro using the Euro, the price of food and hotels are higher priced than other Balkan countries, but are still low compared to Western Europe.

Montenegro is very mountainous. Two of the countries most famous cities, Kotor and Budva, are both at the base of mountains next to the water. The Montenegro culture is intertwined in this dual landscape with their culture being derived from the sea and mountains.

For those who do get motion sickness, it is recommended to pack any medication to help if your tour will be driving through Montenegro from the surrounding countries.

While Montenegro is a Balkan country, the Montenegro culture is heavily influenced by Italy. The Venetian and Roman Empires both had a strong hold on this are of Europe, and had a hand in building some of the most famous sites in Montenegro.

Montenegro Arrival Registration

While most citizens of countries don’t need a visa to visit Montenegro up to 90 days, you do have to register with the authorities. You have 24 hours after your arrival to register with the local government or there is a possibility you may be fined or deported. Also, included in the registration is a fee for how many days you will be in Montenegro.

If you are staying in a hotel, the hotel will register for you. However, if you are arriving early before your tour, you will need to register yourself at the local government office.

Double check with your tour company before you arrive to see if you will need to register yourself or if your tour company or hotel will register for you.

Best Time to Visit Montenegro

July to August has the best weather to visit Montenegro. The temperature is above 85 degrees with plenty of sunshine. However, this is also when the cities and beaches will be the most crowded. Montenegro is a very popular cruise destination and the late-summer is one of the busiest times of the year for cruises.

One of the best times to visit Montenegro is in May and the early part of June.  The weather will be warm, but the crowds will be less, making it the perfect time for a getaway! This is also the best time to visit Montenegro on an active tour. The cooler temperatures are ideal for hiking and bike riding through the mountains of Montenegro.

Who will like Traveling to Montenegro?

Nature enthusiasts will have a hay day in Montenegro. The entire country is a postcard waiting to happen. While some countries have metal skyscrapers, Montenegro has the Dinaric Alps stretching to touch the clouds.

But don’t forget about the water! Montenegro has 182 miles of coastline with Budva and Kotor providing some of the best coastal views in all of Montenegro.

Montenegro is also perfect for the active traveler. With its rugged terrain, Montenegro is the ideal destination for hikers and bicyclists looking to an enjoy an adventure holiday.

History lovers will also enjoy the medieval old towns of Kotor and Budva. These historic little cities are filled with small shops, cafes, and plenty of Byzantine churches to visit.
