Monteverde Cloud Forest Tours & Travel Guide

Monteverde Cloud Forest Attractions & Landmarks Guide

Covering 26,000 acres, the Monteverde Cloud Forest is home to two official reserves, and is one of the most beautiful areas in the world. Featuring extensive hikes, both on the ground and in the air, a tour through Monteverde is truly an incredible experience.

Many tours to Costa Rica will make Monteverde a stop for multiple nights. The expansive forest is worth taking more than one day to explore all it has to offer.

Costa Rica is one of the best countries to visit for families, adventure and outdoors enthusiasts, nature & wildlife lovers, and photographers. You’ll have many opportunities to experience unique species up close and walk among unbelievable beauty, both on the forest floor and up among the canopy.

Unique Monteverde Wildlife

In a place as compact with natural attractions as Costa Rica, it can be hard to believe how many micro-climates and unique differences are found between each forest. But that is exactly what is so intriguing about rainforests and their cousin jungles and cloud forests.

Here's some of the unbelievable wildlife you'll find in Monteverde:

1. Quetzal - Quetzals are intriguingly beautiful, and if you’re traveling at the right time of year, you will see them in Monteverde. They are a migratory species, oscillating between high and low elevations throughout the year. This majestic bird is known for the ridged crest of feathers atop its head - which add to its regal appearance. The Quetzal is one of 145 bird species that live in Monteverde, but it is by far one of the most famous.

2. Amphibians and reptiles - 161 species of amphibians and reptiles live in Monteverde. Rainforests are infamous for poisonous frogs, snakes, even venomous plants. The main thing to watch out for is bright colors - nature’s “stay away” color code. Tree frogs show themselves in great numbers at night, so these amphibians are great to spot on a night hike.

3. Sloth - Monteverde is one of the best forests for night hikes, which offers a great opportunity to see more wildlife, including the ever adorable sloth. These slow moving mammals seem to entrance us as they move methodically among the branches, not a care in the world.

4. Tarantula - There is something ancient and alluring about tarantulas. These enormous spiders are found throughout the world. In Costa Rica you may very well stumble across the endemic Orange Kneed Tarantula, so named for the bright orange stripes across its eight legs. Don’t pass up a chance to snap a pic! You can faint afterwards.

5. Orchids - Monteverde is known to have the largest population of Orchid flowers on earth, with over 500 species. Visit the Santa Elena Orchid Garden for a chance to see them in their natural habitat, learn about their fascinating ecology, and why they thrive in Monteverde.

Top Activities in Monteverde Cloud Forest

There is a lot to do in Monteverde! Every activity helps you gain a deeper appreciation for the forest and its many unique dwellers, from the creepiest crawler to the most majestic feathered friend.

1. Rainforest Reserves in Monteverde

There are two main nature reserves in Monteverde Cloud Forest: the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve and the Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve. The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve was established in 1972 and serves as an important protected area for a diverse group of animals. There are up to 8 miles of hiking trails in Monteverde Reserve, give ample opportunity for wildlife viewing.

Santa Elena Cloud Forest was established in 1989 and is unique in that it is entirely run by the local community of Santa Elena. The environment is very similar to Monteverde, so many of the same species can be found here, with the exception of spider monkeys, which do not live in Monteverde Reserve. One of  Santa Elena’s most popular attractions is the observation tower from which Arenal Volcano can be viewed on clear days.

2. Adventure Parks in Monteverde

It’s not secret that Costa Rica is an extremely popular destination for adventure travel enthusiasts. The country beckons adrenaline rush seekers from around the world, eager to explore the many opportunities for pushing the limits.

This is not to say that only hard adventure can be found. There are multiple options for those who may not be interested in ziplining or surfing to still get a taste of the Costa Rica adventure spirit. These are often popular activities for families and middle aged travelers.

3. Hummingbird & Butterfly Gardens in Monteverde

Observe these small yet mighty creatures as they flit around for nectar in a concentrated area, making it surprisingly easy to watch them up close. Photographers take note - this is a great opportunity to practice quick shutter speeds and macro lenses!

4. Monteverde Hanging Bridge

This may be one of the more famous activities to look forward to in Costa Rica. Walking through the canopy is a unique experience, and one of the best ways to see the rainforest. This vantage point allows for a much deeper understanding for the importance of rainforest ecosystems to their inhabitants.

5. Monteverde Cheese Factory

A local operation that has done much to help Monteverde’s local communities. The Monteverde Cheese Factory has been around since the 1950s, after American Quakers started a dairy farm in the area. Costa Rica is famous for sustainability and green travel, and their farming practices (much aligned with the Quaker traditions as well), follow similar practices.

6. Monteverde Cloud Forest Hiking

Monteverde is full of enchanting paths throughout the forest. Put your explorer hat on as you explore countless trails leading to surprising and beautiful reveals. You can also do night hikes, which are highly recommended for getting to see the many nocturnal animals that live in Monteverde.

What to Wear in Monteverde

The weather in Monteverde can be extreme. More often than not you will experience strong winds and rain, which in turn means mud. Dressing appropriately is going to help make your visit much more enjoyable!

Tours will usually have ponchos to provide, but it’s best to augment this with some waterproof gear and clothing of your own.

Bring lightweight and water resistant layers. Generally try to avoid absorbent materials like cotton in favor of more synthetic fabrics, and forgo denim for something softer and more breathable.

Footwear should be close toed for many Costa Rica tour activities, but for easy forest floor walks, sturdy sandals should suffice, if you just can’t stand wearing hiking socks in the humidty any longer.

Monteverde Cloud Forest Photography Tips

The rainforests and jungles of the world beckon photographers eager to capture the unique beauty and biodiversity. Literally every step you take will introduce new angels, enchanting shafts of rare sunlight filtered through the clouds, and thousands of new species

In Monteverde, the clouds provide a fantastic moodiness that will inform many of your photography decisions. Get ready to spot some unbelievable wildlife and enjoy the unique atmospheric tones of the Cloud Forest environment.

Here are our top tips for getting the best photographs in the Monteverde Cloud Forest:

1. Bring a lens cloth - And have it readily accessible before you begin shooting. Jungle environments are often 100% humid, and this can cause extreme fogging on your lens. While this can create interesting effects, it’s most likely not the effect you’re looking for. You’ll also be looking up for a large portion of your Monteverde tour. Water is almost unavoidable so being able to quickly clean and dry your lens is essential.

2. Use a strap that’s made of soft, durable, water-resistant material. This is a bit a personal preference. However, as you’ll be hiking through dense rainforest, in sometimes humid weather, getting sweatier and not drying off, the generic strap to your DSLR may get irritating and itchy quickly. You can fashion your own strap fairly easily, using a softer cloth material which will be much more comfortable throughout the long days of cloud forest hiking.

3. Get to know the animals - Familiarizing yourself with various species patterns and habits will reveal certain facets of their personalities you may want to capture on film, as well as where the best spots to find them are, and what time of day or night. Also try to determine in advance any animals you’re looking forward to photographing and ask your tour guide if they have any special tips.

4. Bring a macro lens - If you’re not as comfortable with different lenses, using the automatic macro setting on your DSLR will suffice, but using the official lens will transform your photographs even more. Particularly for shooting the unbelievable plant life and the many alienesque insects that live in them, being able to add creative focal points and composition with a macro lens is a wonderful asset.

5. Be respectful and patient - It can be frustrating for a wild animal to not sit in the perfect spot long enough for you to get the best shot possible. But patience is a virtue when it comes to wildlife photography. Try and book a tour that will return to various spots at different times of day, as this will increase your chances of capturing a truly wonderful image of that elusive species.

6. Don’t eliminate people from all your photos - While the wildlife is certainly the focal point of a journey through the forest, a human presence can create a powerful and interesting dynamic. Your entire comment and composition will change, and also you’ll be able to look back and remember the people on your cloud forest tour (hopefully with fondness!).
