Naples Attractions & Landmarks Guide

The pizza haven of Naples has for years been a less traveled to "off the beaten track" hidden secret of Italy, despite being the third largest municipality in the country. Now becoming much more popular, it's easy to see why. The coastal city is charming, with countless notable historical sites, a popular art and theater scene, and of course, there's the food.

Where is Naples

The city of Naples, Napoli in Italian is the third-largest city of Italy, located on the western coast of Italy in the Campania region, at a distance of 120 miles from Rome. The historical city is also important for its harbor facing the Tyrrhenian Sea, being the most important port of southern Italy.

Naples Archaeology Museum

This beautiful museum is one of the world's largest archaeological museums and is famous especially for the Roman antiquities collection. You need at least two hours just to have the highlights of this magnificent museum. The mesmerizing tour of the National Archaeological Museum takes you back in time with the most influential works of art.

To have a detailed trip to the museum, people usually spare a whole day from their Naples tours. However, there is no cafe where you can sit to have a break but you will find vending machines from where you can get some drinks for yourself.

Naples Food

When in Italy you must have to try the local food to get the true essence of the local culture. Like various other Italy destinations, Naples food is also famous for its specialties and Naples tours are incomplete without experiencing the delicious taste of the local specialties.

1. Pizza

In the motherland of pizza, the very first thing you have to eat is the Pizza Margherita. This delicious pizza 'slathered' with mozzarella cheese, basil, and delicious tomato sauce is as old as the 18th century and was named in 1889 after the queen of Italy.

2. Baba

This classical sweet cake is served at breakfast or as desserts, dipped in rum usually, and topped with whipped cream, custard, fruits, etc. It is given the shape of Mount Vesuvius, the volcano in the Gulf of Naples. If you are invited to someone's home, don't forget to take a tray of baba. It is a tradition in Naples.

3. Fried Pizza

The famous Naples Pizza dough is stuffed with creamy ricotta cheese, black pepper and a bit of meat, then fried in olive oil till crispy perfection. Topped with mozzarella, parmesan and tomato sauce this Naples food item is going to be the most delicious and freshly fried dough you ever had.

4. Sfogliatelle

There are two types; sfogliatella riccia made with a puff pastry like dough and is curly in shape, while the sfogliatella frolla is more of a shortcut dough and are small ball-shaped. Rolled in sweet icing sugar, these delicious cakes have very soft and delicious inside.

5. Cuoppo

This fried street food is something you cannot afford to miss during Naples tours. The handheld brown paper cone may contain anything ranging from seafood like fish or shrimp to potato croquettes. No matter what item you try, be ready to get amazed by the taste.

6. Panino

7. Parmigiana Di Melanzane

This typically traditional dish is preferred for Sunday lunch. Parmigiana Di Melanzane is surely one of the most unique and delicious Naples food items

Things To Do in Naples (Besides Eat Pizza!)

The small town offers various activities that would be enough for you to plan a relaxing tour. Naples tours in Italy should include all of these activities if you want to enjoy the true color of the region.

  • Go down from the Castel Sant’Elmo staircase and explore the Spanish Quarter. Spend your afternoon here enjoying shopping, lunch, and espresso at a cafe.
  • Be a little adventurous. Go hiking to the active volcano, Mount Vesuvius. Join a hiking group, take a train or hike all the way up to the top.
  • Ancient Roman ruins in surrounding towns of Naples should be a compulsory part of all Naples tours.
  • Go strolling through the bustling neighborhood markets. Even if you don’t want to buy anything just enjoy the vibrant atmosphere.
  • Take a ferry to wander around or visit the Sorrento town, riding from the port of Naples.
  • Not just the visible beauty but there is some hidden treasure below the Spanish Quarter waiting to be explored. It’s better to join a tour to have a guided trip to the underground Naples.

Weather in Naples

Being on the Mediterranean makes Naples a bit warmer throughout the year, except during the winter months. Summers are hot, winters are cold but pleasant and spring and autumn are ideal to pay a visit.

Summertime, June to August, is very hot, with high temperatures and high humidity levels. The average temperature is 19 to 29-degree centigrade. People usually like to spend their time in the cold breeze on the coast.

The temperature starts to fall from September till November before the winter starts. Days are pleasant with an average temperature of 15 to 21-degree centigrade. However, expect more rain and be prepared for unexpected shoes.

Wintertime, between December to February, becomes cold with temperatures ranging between 3 to 10-degree centigrade. Beach is out of the question. Remember to cover yourself properly with an extra layer. This time is usually low with tourist but it gets crowded again around the holiday time.

It starts becoming pleasant again in March and the weather remains pleasant till May. Temperatures range between 15 to 21-degree centigrade which makes it an ideal time to roam about in the region and explore the beautiful sites.

Pompeii From Naples

The historical city  of Pompeii is located at a distance of just 16.6 miles from Naples that makes it a perfect destination for a day trip from Naples. The tour of this excavated city will take you back in time and you will genuinely get a feel of the ancient Roman life. The best way to travel between Naples and Pompeii is by train.

The Circumvesuviana train from central Naples station will take you to Pompeii. Get down at the Pompeii Scavi train station that is just a five-minute walk from the site entrance. Get the ticket from the train station. No advance booking is required as the train leaves every 30 minutes.

If you want to avoid the huge crowd in the Napoli Centrale then you can ride from Piazza Nolana station at an 8-minute walk from the main station. All trains depart from here as well and you are more likely to get a seat of your choice.

Get your tickets from the Pompeii entrance. Don’t bring any luggage with you as you are not allowed to take luggage to the Pompeii site. If you have brought something important, leave it in the storage facility at the Pompeii Scavi station.

Take a map from the entrance that will help you a lot to explore the ancient Roman ruins. Do bring the proper amount of water and sunscreen as you are going to explore the city with very little shade points.

Best Time to Visit Naples

Springtime is most appropriate to visit Naples. From mid-March to early June, the weather is pleasant and the huge crowds of tourists have yet to arrive, as most people prefer to visit the place during summer vacation time.

You can get almost everything at a reasonable price and can enjoy the nearly empty sites in the pleasant weather. October and November are also pleasant with lower crowds and cheaper rates but if you visit during this time, be prepared for unexpected rainfall.

Mid-June to mid-September and then mid-December to early January are high seasons and there are huge crowds of tourists throughout the place. Avoid these times if you want to enjoy the place freely and comfortably. Rates are also high during this time.

Winter is the low time when everyone has gone back to their home, except for the holiday time. The weather is colder but you may get discounts at various facilities including accommodation.
