Best Things to Do in Po River

This trip was a lot of fun. In less than a week, we were able to witness and experience a large portion of the country without feeling rushed. Stunning views were constantly around us, whether we were on a hike or in the car between destinations. We felt like we were able to experience a variety of cultures within the country (Quito/urban life, native communities, highland farms).

My husband, fifteen-year old daughter, and I had a great time on the Tapir trip. As we traveled in a loop extending south of Quito, we were fascinated by the diveristy in topography, climate, and flora. Our terrific guide Mauro had a wealth of information to share about all aspects of what we were seeing (plus Ecuadorian history, government and society). Some of the activities were challenging but doable, particularly because Mauro and our driver/assitant guide Daniel were patient and supportive. I also felt very safe and well cared for in Mauro and Daniel's hands; they provided advice on safe food and water, when to use insect repellant, etc. and were savvy and knowledgable about where to go, where to park, and when Daniel should guard the van. I found our time in the Amazon basin magical, and loved all of the excursions and special stops throughout the tour.

We loved the Tapir Tour! And it's difficult to say which was more impressive, the stunning beauty of the Ecuador countryside -- from the highlands and Banos, to the Napo River area in the Amazon basin, to the drive to the Termas Papallacta Resort en route back to Quito -- or our two amazingly knowledgeable, careful and ever attentive guides, Mauro and Daniel. They took care of everything, and they made my wife, teenage daughter and me feel immediately at ease and assured throughout the trip.

I'll write a lengthier review tomorrow. They deserve it.

The trip from start to finish was well organized, comfortable and so much fun. Even before I left, active adventures were great about keeping me informed of everything I needed to do and what to expect.

Once the trip began, our guide, Mauro, was such a professional that he made everything seem effortless. Each activity was perfectly timed and he was sure to point out things that we shouldn't miss.

The waterfall hike and the stay at the jungle Lodge were probably the highlights of the trip and I will remember them always.

We bicycled down Cotopaxi! While there, saw wild horses, llamas, and Ecuadorean fox, a rainbow, and soaring caracara birds (falcons). We rode horses up into the highlands (dressed warmly like gauchos) and stayed at a working hacienda; took an open gondola cable car ride across a gorge & waterfall; stood next to the roaring Devil's Cauldron cataract; rode on the Swing at the End of the World! We hiked into the Amazon rainforest, scaling a series of waterfalls at about a 70 degree angle (or more); we slept in the rainforest; saw an indigenous woman make fibers from plants, as well as pottery from clay harvested from the river (decorated with natural dyes); and saw thieving capuchin monkeys play tricks on shopkeepers in Puerto Misahualli. And then to the luxurious thermal spas of Termas Papallacta!

Every detail of our trip was perfectly coordinated, and all was always in readiness for our arrivals. The food was delicious and our kind and knowledgeable trip leader, Mauro, became like a family member to us. We actually ate lemon ants and also grilled grubs! Why not?! Ecuador is a stunning country, well worth a visit!
