What travelers are saying

"This trip is unbelievably fantastic. Two of the best rides of my life, were on this tour. The guides were very good and this was just the start, when we met them, at the hotel in Cortina. Cortina was the site of the 1956 Olympics, and is a small pretty village. Nothing was open the two nights we were there, so probably bad timing. Hotel was a typical ski village hotel, good Italian/German food, and very comfortable. Second day of biking was up an old railroad spur that is now a ski trail about 15-20 K up to a mountain pass called Cimabanche Pass, which is beautiful. We rode up in a snow storm, then rain, then finally clear skies. This was the number two best ride of my life. Starting out from the hotel in Cortina, up the old spur, through single track bike trails, past babbling brooks, up to this fabulous mountain pass. This is now where the fun starts. Mostly downhill on paved roads very little traffic, at good speeds, through the most spectacular valleys you would ever see on a bike ride. Breathtaking. It had to end back at the hotel for a big dinner. The best ride of my life was the last biking day out of Merano. We were bused up 1500 K, about 85-90 miles to Lake Resia, high up in the Dolomites, then rode around the lake, down, back to Merano. High mountain peaks, many valleys, small towns, many grape growing farms, scenery, the best, and cool brisk weather. This was truly a great bike tour, one I will never forget. The trip is rated easy, but maybe easy/moderate is closer. The Hotel in Merano is excellent, middle of old town, modern, has a thermal bath, rooms were very good. The town of Merano is a must see if in the area, small, beneath the high mountains of the Dolomites, good restaurants, lots of tourists."

What travelers are saying

"We joined the Intrepid “Real Italy Food Tour” and enjoyed it thoroughly. Our tour guide, Micol, was very knowledgeable and provided us with lots of good information. It seems Micol knew many of the staff of the venues we visited, including the pasta making class we attended. Our group of 11 travelers was extremely compatible, which greatly added to the fun and enjoyment."

What travelers are saying

"We've taken over 10 group tours using Cosmos and Gate1. This trip last month, 9000 was not very good. -During booking, incorrect information was given about airport-hotel transfers -The whispers (listening devices) didn't work from the get-go, so no whispers were used during the 13 day trip. - Porters are no longer hired to bring your luggage to and from your room. (Very elderly had to handle their own luggage. Our friends had to help many of them.) -A few days into the trip one couple left. At the end of the trip we found out they had covid. Cosmos did not let us know; a few people weren't feeling well and two of our friends then tested positive. -One hotel was awful and not even up to "budget" standards -Many of the stops had castles, churches... but were not included, so be sure to count that in when pricing.  don't plan to use Cosmos ever again. Gate1 is the best in my opinion. When my husband's passport was stolen, they assigned someone to go with him to the embassy, translate, etc...It was above and beyond what we expected  "

What travelers are saying

"A really difficult company to communicate with, slow to respond and not able to accept accountability for poor service. Used Tee Travel in Spain which was even worse. Not able to organize support or assistance and harassed me about luggage that wasn't mine. There were other walkers who appeared to have more support and assistance from their travel providers. Definitely avoid this company as overpriced and no actual service."

Portugal Tour Selection Trips

  • Spanish and Portuguese are two very different languages. They may sound similar at first, but the majority of Portuguese people do not understand Spanish, and English is not commonly spoken.
  • Portugal is quite small and tour itineraries often also include nearby Spain and Morocco
  • Portuguese food is heavy in seafood! Get ready for some of the best fish, octopus, and other delights from the sea you’ve ever tasted. If you have dietary restrictions or allergies, be sure to let your tour operator know far enough in advance.

Additional details

Tours in Portugal cover a very wide range of activity levels and interests. If you want to explore Portugal only, there are a few tours that focus on the country only however the majority of Portugal tours will also visit Spain, and sometimes Morocco. Portugal is also a popular port of call for small ship cruises to Europe.

Who will enjoy traveling in Portugal?

Portugal is great for travelers who are interested in a less visited European country. With its Mediterranean vibes combined with ancient history Portugal presents a unique travel opportunity while still remaining within the realms of comfortable travel.

For those who might be looking to stretch their comfort zone, you could consider a tour that also visits Portugal’s nearby neighbor, Morocco - a country with whom it shares much history.

Wine lovers as well should definitely consider a trip to Portugal, where the wine regions are still rugged and salt of the earth. You’ll encounter many different kinds of wine, but the major draw in portugal is the Port.

What is the weather like in Portugal?

Portugal is a small country, half of which is bordered with North Atlantic sea coastline to the west and south. The climate is largely Mediterranean and you can expect several microclimates throughout your journey. So definitely bring layers no matter what time of year you choose to tour Portugal.

The weather in Portugal is fairly mild, with the warmest months in the summer reaching around 80 degrees F, and the coolest months in the winter reaching the low 60s, with light to moderate rainfall.

What is the best time to visit Portugal?

While Portugal is a welcoming country for tourists pretty much year round, there are some things to keep in mind when planning your visit. Summertime is the peak season, and you can expect much higher crowds and prices while traveling around the country.

In June, there are major festivals held in Lisbon and Porto. Though they have religious roots, the festivals can be enjoyed by anyone looking for a good time with lots of live music and delicious traditional foods. If meeting locals, visiting small towns, and getting an authentic sense of local community, you should definitely try and attend the June festivals in Portugal.

What to wear in Portugal

Fashion in Portugal is causal - you’ll fit in just fine with jeans pretty much anywhere. Pack comfortable walking shoes or sandals. Most cities in Portugal are set up for walking - though they aren’t always flat! The 25 de Abril Bridge is not the only similarity Portugal has to San Francisco - you will experience some hills while walking around.

Sun hats, sunglasses, and light breathable clothing is recommended for the summertime. In winter, you will probably experience some rain so be sure to pack a waterproof jacket.

Even though the weather is toasty in summertime, be sure to bring a pair of long pants and shoulder covering scarf or top for when you visit churches and cathedrals.
