Things to do in Prague - Expert’s guide
The capital of the Czech Republic is also known as the 'city of thousand spires,' and you can see why. Everywhere around the city, you will see fascinating examples of Baroque, Renaissance, Gothic, and Art Nouveau styled architectures. As one of the best-preserved cities of Europe, the place has so much to offer, but we have listed here the top few destinations that should be a must-visit part of your itinerary.
1. Prague Castle
Dating back to the 9th century, this complex was the seat of power of Bohemian kings, Roman emperors, and Czechoslovakia presidents and is witness to some of the most significant moments of the history of the region. This is the world's largest ancient castle and is one of the most visited attractions of Prague, and is currently used as the office of the Czech President.
2. Charles Bridge
This iconic bridge of the 14th century was built in the place of Judith Bridge that was destroyed by the flood. Until 1841, it was the only way to cross the river, making an important connection between the castle and Old Town. The bridge made Prague the most important trade route between Western and Eastern Europe.
3. Prague Astronomical Clock
This mechanical clock face is a 600-years old medieval structure of the capital. Installed in 1410, it is the third-oldest astronomical clock that is still operational, and the third-oldest to be installed ever. At each hour bang, the 12 Apostles and other figures come into appearance and parade across the clock face.
4. St. Vitus Cathedral
This metropolitan Roman Catholic cathedral was dedicated to Saint Vitus till 1997 and is still known by the name. With its impressive Gothic architecture, this cathedral is one of the largest and most important churches in history. The shrine is not only home to the tombs of many Holy Roman Emperors and Bohemian kings, but they were also crowned in this mighty cathedral.
5. Národní Muzeum
The National Museum wan established with an intention to establish, prepare, and exhibit the history and natural science collections of the country. There are more than 14 million items in the museum related to history, natural history, music, arts, and librarianship. The museum is spread across various houses and locations across the city, exhibiting various important items.
6. The Prague Municipal House
This civic building is a fine example of Art Nouveau in Prague. Home to the largest and most important concert venue of the city, Smetana Hall, this splendid structure was built in 1912.
The most striking features of the building include its large dome, sumptuous facade, and a large mural on the second-floor balcony, above the arch. Filled with important paintings and fine stained glass windows, the interior of the house is also very impressive.
7. Prague Zoo
This amazing zoo was opened in 1931 with an aim to advance in the zoological study, protect wildlife, and also educate the common people about it.
Today it ranks among one of the top zoological parks of the world. With a collection of more than 650 animal species, including many who are close to extinction, the zoo houses more than 4000 animals. Enjoy the indoor tropical jungle, chairlift ride, and a closer view of many animal enclosures.
8. Josefov
