1. Lyon, France
Lyon is the third largest city in France and as such boasts an impressive cultural experience. It is considered one of the gems along the Rhone River for its outstanding museums, such as the Musée des Confluences and the Musée Des Beaux-Arts, which have curated historical and artistic collections. Additionally, architectural sites such as the Basilique Notre Dame de Fourvière and the Cathédrale St-Jean-Baptiste.
2. Geneva, Switzerland
Geneva is an awe-inspiring city, surrounded by the Alp and Jura Mountains. It has views of Mont Blanc, a special peak amongst the range. It is also home to Lake Geneva, an expansive lakefront. You can see also see interesting attractions ranging from from the St. Pierre’s Cathedral to the United Nations’ Palais des Nations. The French influence is witnessed through its cuisine, language and the Bohemian district of Carouge.
3. Vienne, France
This riverfront city pays homage to its Gallo-Roman roots, through the ancient ruins that should be a part of any visit. One can visit the Théâtre Romain, which revitalizes theatrical and musical productions during the summer months. One can also visit Musée Gallo-Romain or the temple d'Auguste et de Livie to gain a better sense of the ancient Roman Empire.
4. Valence, France
Valence is an excellent stop along the Rhone River with its historical attractions. The Valence Museum offers art from the 16th to 21st centuries and also a great view of the Rhone River. Parc Jouvet is a lovely place to walk through the greenery and canals. It also has a castle, the 13th century Château de Crussol.
5. Beaujolais, France
Meandering through Beaujolais, a traveler will witness the peaceful countryside with its rolling vineyards, charming churches and friendly character. This is within a 50km distance from Lyon and could be a great day trip. For those who are wine connoisseurs, this is an excellent place to sample wine from the region at local vineyards.
6. Gorges de l’Ardèche, France
The Gorges de l’Ardèche are spectacular canyon walls that hold a tributary of the Rhone River. They are very picturesque and are a wonderful place to take in the landscapes that surround the Rhone River. The limestone walls complement the open skies and the flowing river. Another sight in this area is the Caverne du Pont d'Arc, which is one of the biggest replica caves with detailed paintings from the past.
7. La Dombes, France
This region is known for its excellent, farm fresh cuisine. It is a day trip from the Rhone River and is a place where many enjoy a tour of France’s gastronomy including scrumptious frog legs, local meats and fish. It is a place where a leisurely bike ride or walk will also show you the relaxed pace and many lakes of the French countryside.
8. Avignon, France
Set along the Rhone River, Avignon is a place with a cultural and historical draw. It is a place where one can see the ruins of the bridge, Pont d'Avignon and see the palace called Palais des Papes. It is a city that will capture your attention with the Avignon Cathedral and Musée Du Petit Palais with its Renaissance painting collection.
9. Pérouges, France
Film aficionados will recognize Pérouges as the setting of many beloved French Films. It lies about 30 km from Lyon and is worthy of a day trip from the Rhone River. You can stroll along the cobblestone streets and enjoy the sights that made so many landscapes famous through film.
