Rivers & Seas Attractions And Landmarks Guide

The world's rivers and seas have become prime cruising destinations, especially over the past decade, as travelers increasingly discover the benefits of small-ship and river cruises. Small ships and river ships are far more intimate than ocean-going mega-liners, sightseeing is at closer distances, port stops are generally more frequent, and smaller ports unavailable to big ships can be added to itineraries. While Europe remains the epicenter of river cruising, Asia, North and South America, and Africa are fast gaining popularity, while small ships sail the MediterraneanBaltic, and Black Seas, among others, and make expeditions to the Polar Regions as well.

The Alluring Amazon

Perhaps dissuaded by the thought of piranhas, mosquitos, and the many other pesky creatures that make The Amazon their home, people have historically not made this a vacation destination. But that is changing. Taking an Amazon River Cruise is becoming increasingly popular, and itineraries are very diverse. You can choose between hiking through wilderness or a more relaxing journey with a luxury operator.

The Beautiful Blue Danube

A European river cruise is an experience not to be missed. On a leisurly Danube river cruise, you will sail past grand architectural sights, quaint European towns, and impressive history around every turn. An impressive 1,780 miles long, The Danube flows from Germany to Romania on its way to the Black Sea. One of if not the most popular river cruise destination, it is truly a sight to behold and no wonder it has it’s very own waltz.

The Bright Blue Mediterranean

The stunning blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea have beckoned travelers for centuries. This gorgeous body of water and the land region represented by the same name is one of the most traveled to regions in the world. If you’re visiting any one of the countries that share the Mediterranean's shores, be sure to take advantage of a day trip out on the water. Alternatively, this is one of the most popular destinations for taking a small ship cruise

Mysteries of the Nile

Sail past the intriguing lands of Ancient Egypt and beyond on a Nile river cruise. At 4,258 miles long, it’s importance to the livelihoods and cultures of the people who have depended on it for centuries cannot be understated. History will come alive as you pass iconic structures and the beautiful Middle Eastern landscape.

Crossing the Ocean

An ocean cruise is one of the slowest ways to travel, but also one of the most rewarding. Feeling the pace and the vast distance, you will get a sense for what early explorers must have gone through (and appreciate the luxury of your cruise cabin!). It also affords you the opportunity to visit multiple countries in one trip, which is a great way to cover a lot of ground, if you don't mind the limited amount of time you will get to spend in each place.

Amazon River Cruise

Amazon River Cruises

5.0 September 2017 International Expeditions Recommend: Yes This was our second time coming to Peru but first time with International Expeditions and it was amazing.

Staff and guides are very friendly and accommodating. If you have food allergies and any sort of problem they take the time to ensure you have a great trip and will help you any way that they can. The river cruise itself was very comfortable clean sheets, beds are nice and rooms are pretty spacious overall for a river cruise.

We always had daily activities to participate in or could choose to stay behind. But I wouldn't recommend that as you get to see so much just within the first couple of days that you're in Pacaya-Samiria Reserve!

The wildlife was incredible and included sightings of monkeys, birds, snakes, a sloth, spiders and beautiful frogs that you get to see during the night boat tour. I loved going into a local village and learning about cultural traditions that have been passed on from generation to generation. We even participated in a spiritual ritual that's supposed to cleanse your body; a very interesting experience! I'd recommend bringing and using insect repellent daily especially during summer peak season, it is the Amazon after all. If you love wildlife and are looking for a great authentic but comfortable experience in nature, I highly recommend this trip.

YOLO CRUISE - Santorini to Mykonos

1.0 September 2017 Sail in Greece Recommend: No IF I COULD GIVE 0* I WOULD!!

Please ensure you do NOT book with Sail in Greece!!!!

They are an appalling company who take no responsibility for any issues that occur! Myself and 2 friends booked in August when we turned up we were told that our boat wasn't available and so was given an old dirty boat which was NOTHING like any of the photos they had sent us. It didn't have air conditioning and most of the lights in bathrooms/bedrooms didn't work!! Almost 90% of the promised itinerary never happened including any swim stops or organised toga parties etc. The most shocking factor was that when we got to Mykonos we didn't even dock meaning we either had to swim to land or wait over an hour for a member of the crew to use the small wet dinghy (which broke on the second day). We were treated like animals as we could not access our own boat, being told to sleep on other boats without any bedding etc. Additionally, the breakfast items supposedly included were stale pieces of small white bread and jam... that was it! Some days we weren't even offered that! Most islands we didn't arrive to until gone 4 pm meaning we had no time to explore.

Please if you wish to visit the Greek islands either choose a different company or book it yourself via ferries etc!! All you will experience with Sail in Greece is DISAPPOINTMENT!!!

I have photos etc as evidence if anyone wishes to see them and see how disgusting the boat really was!!

Lesson learned: Never travel through EF College Break Again.

London & Paris Escape

1.0 September 2017 EF College Break Recommend: No I had to cancel my one week trip because of an unexpected stay in the hospital that made me unable to travel. After straightening everything out with my credit card company over a month ago and receiving my funds back, a man named Ryan decides to text message me (not through email-unprofessionalism at its best) and decides to give me an ultimatum. Which was to either pay him directly or he would press forward on filing a claim against my disputes and getting the funds back. Completely unprofessional, utterly rude, and this is a situation he should be contacting my credit card company about, not me, a valuable customer that has used EF College Break more than once. I will let me fellow colleagues and friends aware of the disastrous customer service they have going on here, and will never be traveling through this agency again. Read more

YOLO CRUISE - Santorini to Mykonos

1.0 August 2017 Sail in Greece Recommend: No Do not believe the fake reviews- no one in their right mind would give this company anything over zero. Wish there was a minus option! The travellers of this trip all have photographic and video evidence, thus it is impossible to drown out the facts by fake numbers of fake 5 star reviews.
Firstly, the add on - 10 hours on a ferry from Athens to Santorini after a stay in a very seedy hostel, no one explains what time the ferry leaves or any other details, horrendous organisation from the very beginning. Some people missed the ferry and had to buy expensive tickets to a fast ferry on the day as no details had been given.
Arrival into Santorini: you are advised to meet in the new port and you sit around and wait in a crowded cafe for a couple of hours until the tour guides get their stuff together. Then they charge you 20 euros to take you to see Santorini sunset, and then, at around midnight, like illegal immigrants, in complete darkness they start loading people on the boats docked in Perissa in the sea. The luggage and people are put into inflatable motor boats and are taken in the dark to the boats where there is no one to allocate a room. One of the skippers was missing on a smaller yacht.
There were more people than the boats could fit, some people including myself were "upgraded" on the spot to small yachts that are not meant for a week's sail and have tiny toilets, no proper shower, forget toilet paper (byo), breakfast, aircon or wifi, promised in all marketing materials. I refused to stay on the boat and went back to the shore at 1am with another couple who were lucky enough to get a refund after half an hour of screaming and bargaining with the owner.
Others were not that lucky and had the owner of the company screaming abuse at them between 1-3am, refusing to refund or part refund and hanging up a few times.
At 3 am I was finally hosted by a couple on a large boat who had a quad room and they had originally been placed in the same room with a honeymoon couple who had paid for a private double.
The whole week is unorganised to say the least. Safety is non-existent so do take out good health and life insurance. The speedboat tour was not booked in advance and neither were the quad bikes. Do not go with Sail Greece recommendations for quads as you will be charged twice what you would pay if you went on your own.
The staff drink with the customers which I believe is unacceptable and unsafe (did Sail Croatia last year and it was a major no-no for the staff on board). None of the tour leaders speak to each other or know exactly what's going on at any point in time. It did look most of the time the leaders were there for a fun holiday.
Due to the weather conditions we could not sail to one of the islands so a lot of people were stuck on the boats without access to food or water and no option has been offered.
Due to strong winds that happen in August, the sail from Paros to Mykonos should not have even happened on these boats and yachts, and at some stage it was mentioned that we would be placed on fast public ferries and offered accommodation in Mykonos but it never happened - again the obvious money saving at the expense of risking customers' lives. We started sail in incredibly rough and dangerous conditions, and mind you there was never any safety briefing. The larger boat that I was on went under a wave and tables were flying around but thanks to the captain who managed it the best way possible, it made it in one piece to Mykonos with emotionally traumatised customers. Some of us refused to stay on the boat for one more night and there was no offer of compensation or accommodation, or even transport to the accommodation we had organised last minute.
One of the smaller yachts that I was originally supposed to be on was not that lucky and their engine died in the middle of the stormy sea and they started sinking. Neither our boat nor the coast guard could get close enough for a while to rescue them, and people lost their luggage and documents which could not be saved as battery acid leaked into the water and it was dangerous to rescue them. There was no compensation, meals, drinks or anything else offered at any stage of this disaster week.
Aircon does not work so yes you will be sleeping on the deck and ending up with a cold like most people. Wifi does not exist either. Warm shower is only available when the boat is moving which is not a lot so prepare to shower off the side of the boat after a swim stop. Breakfast is dry bread and nutella (on the main boat) and nothing on others. Drinks that we had purchased disappeared from the fridge which caused a fair bit of drama and tension as drinking and chatting to people is the only thing that keeps you from going crazy during this trip.
I am hoping to see this company go into insolvency before they kill anyone as at this rate it is completely possible. No safety, no customer service, no idea about basic hospitality - when you stuff up, do apologise profusely and compensate in all ways possible (water, food, monetary refund) and never scream at distressed customers at 2 am in the morning or hang up on them. Hire professional and ethical staff. Maybe do Sail Croatia for an educational experience on how to run a successful sailing experience and not rip people off and rob them off their holidays that they have earned and paid for and instead have got the worst experience imaginable.
