Flawlessly planned

We (my wife and I and two friends) recently travelled to South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Botswana on a trip organized by Ker-Downey. Although we duplicated a trip taken by other friends some years ago, K-D did an excellent job in adjusting our itinerary and accommodations to suite our wishes. Every detail from start to finish including guided transfers was flawlessly planned. The hotels, lodges and camps were excellent although decidedly not budget. Americans tend to be a bit reluctant to travel to Africa and as a result miss some very unique opportunities. No doubt there are risks but Ker-Downey helps travelers in getting around and staying safely.

Cape Town organized a superb safari

Marcelo Novais of Ker and Downey, Cape Town organized a superb safari for us this past May/June 2017. We took Rovos Rail Pretoria/Victoria Falls (second time on the train - splendid experience). Sanctuary Chobe Chilwero lodge at Chobe NP was almost nest to the park entrance which was VERY convenient. Then off to Savute for & Beyond under Canvas which we loved. Great lion sightings. Sanctuary Baines' Camp, mainly water activities was great including having our bed on the deck and sleeping under the stars. Sanctuary Chiefs Camp in Moremi has been very recently redone and is stunning. The staff were marvelous. And then home :-(. We have been to Botswana a number of times and certainly enjoyed the rich game and natural world of Botswana. Thanks, Marcelo, Peter and Carol King

Their exemplary planning

We have always arranged our own travel arrangements and accommodation when holidaying, but found it difficult to do so for Africa. After approaching several agents who pushed us towards the standard group tours which only partially fitted our suggested itinerary, we luckily found Ker & Downey and Emma and Razaan in Capetown. Their exemplary planning and service allowed us to spend an unforgettable month in Botswana, Tanzania and Zanzibar. Accommodation was excellent, transfers were allways on time and 100 % reliable, and most imprtantly we experienced a wide range of different country, from delta to desert to rainforest to open plains and savanna. Due to this our interaction with animals, birds, the local people and the environment in general, was nothing short of amazing! Thanks again to Emma and Razaan, BEST HOLIDAY EVER!

first class service

My husband and I just got back from our honeymoon trip booked through Great Safaris. It was a trip of a lifetime and we were so impressed by the accommodations, food and first class service. We saw more animals than we ever expected to see and our safari guides were very knowledgeable. Our trip was two weeks and Great Safaris picked all the right spots in Kenya and Tanzania!

Safari camps in South Africa and Botswana and explored the Cape Town region.

Travel with comfort, great food, safety and wonderful game viewing experiences. First time trip to Africa for my wife and I. All the guides and boat and safari camp staff were professional and fun. The transfers and connections were seamless. The home hosted dinner near Cape Town gave fascinating perspectives on life in South Africa.

highly recommend Great Safaris

My husband and I contacted Dave Herbert at Great Safaris after our friend (who is an experienced travel agent) highly recommended him. She has traveled to Africa numerous times and has always relied on Dave to make her arrangements. Not once has she ever been disappointed. So, following her lead, we gave him a call and told him what our budget was as well as what we wanted to see for our first time there. He recommended that we go for 19 days and go on safari to Kenya and Tanzania. He then put together an incredible itinerary that included Samburu National Park, the Masai Mara, Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara, and the Serengeti. We stayed in deluxe accommodations throughout. Every detail was attended to throughout our trip. Roundtrip transfers were included from small, dirt air strips to and from our lodges; private or semi-private drivers/guides took us on safari twice a day for a minimum of 7 hours per day; the food at each lodge was above average or outstanding, depending on where we were and often was included in the price of our tour; all inter-Africa flights were booked with excellent airlines (sometimes we were the only 2 passengers in the plane!); round trip flights from Los Angeles to Nairobi with a stopover in Dubai were also included in the price (we traveled on Emirates Airlines per Dave’s recommendation–definitely a good call); and we received outstanding service wherever we stayed. We highly recommend Great Safaris and Dave Herbert if you are planning your first trip to Africa or your fiftieth! He knows the continent like the back of his hand because he goes there and sends his staff there continually to ensure that what they’re selling to their clients meets their high standards. You cannot go wrong with Great Safaris!!!

Absolutely amazing

We just returned from Kenya and Rwanda and thanks to Pam at Rothschild Safaris we had a trip that far exceeded our wildest dreams. Pam was a pleasure to work with. Knowing nothing about Africa, I told her that within our two weeks we wanted the maximum number of safaris, a hot air balloon ride, and a gorilla trek. I gave her a budget that she respected and she planned an absolutely amazing adventure. Not only was each of the places we stayed in different from one another but each had its own specific charm. This was glamping with fine dining. At each place the managers and staff were warm, friendly, and kind. The food was excellent and the service was great. From the moment we got off the plane in Nairobi and were met on the tarmac by our first contact, we were handed over from person to person and never left alone to fend for ourselves. Our driver Andrew in Nairobi and Sadee in Kigali were friendly and knowledgeable. Our guides Julius in Elephant Bedroom Camp, Milton in Ngenche, and Wilson in Encounter were fantastic. The hot air ballon ride was amazing and the gorilla trek was an experience that can’t be described. Considering that our trip included 6 places to stay, 3 shared shuttle flights, and a commercial flight from Nairobi to Kigali,, it all went off without a glitch. Once again, thank you Pam and thank you Meggan for answering my many questions and emails and for being friendly and patient with multiple phone calls. This whole adventure from beginning to end has been a trip of a lifetime thanks to you.

Incredible

We had the most incredible time on our safari trip. Rothschild Safaris did such an amazing job choosing locations, camps, and guides for us. Our trip to Tanzania has been our best trip yet! We are looking forward to booking a future trip with Rothschild. You have found customers for life. Would like to give special recognition to our Arusha safari guide, Mohammad. He did an excellent job of educating us on Tanzanian culture as well as all of the animals we had encountered. All of the guides were great, but Mohammad really stood out and became a fast friend of ours. We feel so fortunate to have been able to experience such a beautiful country. We are so grateful to everyone at Rothschild to putting together such an amazing trip!

wonderful experience

Loved our Thailand/Cambodia trip curated by Global Basecamps. The pre-trip communications were exceptional and a sign of the wonderful experience we would have when we arrived in Thailand and Cambodia. Once we arrived, every excursion and hotel were as described. We had an amazing trip and would use Global Basecamps again … no doubt!

Global Basecamps specializes in designing custom tours for those who want to travel independently but also want support while doing so. With help from the Global Basecamps team, you can choose your own itinerary and be as flexible as you want to be. Meanwhile, Global Basecamps promises support before, during, and after your trip. That support includes advice and help with planning and logistics; selecting and booking transportation, restaurants, lodgings, and activities; and arranging for local tour guides and transfers. But you’ll be traveling on your own rather than with a group, and have full say in where you want to go and for how long, and what you want to do while there. They will arrange safaris, treks, small ship cruises and other tours from Morocco to Ecuador, Japan to Uganda. Global Basecamps outlines a number of tours that you could take, for “inspiration” -- such as “Beyond the Big Five: Uganda, Tanzania and the Spice Island” (Zanzibar), one of National Geographic Traveler’s pick for Top Africa Tours of a Lifetime for 2014 -- but you’re free to modify it as you like. In general, expect to pay more for customized independent trips than for group travel, though you can customize the budget level you feel comfortable with as your arrangements are made. The company prides itself on fostering sustainable tourism and environmentally friendly lodgings, and works with local guides and outfitters to benefit economies in the countries visited.

Fortunate enough to make this trip of a lifetime

If you are considering taking this company's Thailand in Style trip, do it! My 30-year old daughter and I were fortunate enough to make this trip of a lifetime in February 2018 and it was perfect from start to finish. We were shepherded every step of the way by one or more guides who handled everything: baggage, transportation to every destination (via private vans, boats, planes), sightseeing tickets/tours, tips, most meals. The 5-star accommodations were amazing and memorable - we hated to leave all of them! The trip also includes many unique dining experiences. I highly recommend a trip just focusing on Thailand. A diversity of landscapes - including a megalopolis, mountains and beaches - are included and the 12 days flew by, packed with temple visits, markets and a snorkeling trip. Service everywhere was friendly and exceptionally caring. Believe A&K's statement that they will provide a tour even if there are 2 people - there were 4 in our group. Our primary guide Sarah was extremely knowledgeable and very accommodating.

Perfectly organized from start to finish

Victoria falls and Botswana safari. BEST trip of my life. Perfectly organized from start to finish. Game drives, relaxing boat rides on the Zambezi and Chobe rivers. Our tour guide, Ali Tiego , who stayed with us the whole trip, was amazing!! Food was fantastic, the accommodations were very nice, especially chiefs camp. I cannot say enough good things about the staff at each place we stayed. And, the animals, wow. I want to go back already and would travel with A and K without hesitation

Don't waste your money on this Company!

We have used Tauck and other high end family travel organizations. We decided to give Abercrombie & Kent a try for our Australia holiday. It was a disappointment beginning to end. First, you never get the day to day times and "full" itinerary until you land. We stood in the airport calling for the A&K driver in the line. Finally, a man stepped forward and said: "Sorry, Miss I was just talking to my mates and the tour director is running late."The four season is nice anywhere in the world but we could have booked that on our own. The things that families want to do in Sydney are NOT included in your tour and must be booked by you and paid for in addition to the A&K costs. For example: Climbing the harbor bridge and Sydney opera house. We did get to go to Bondi Beach for a surf lesson. What they don't tell you is they are locking the door to the shop so no going back for a camera, to change out of wetsuit etc for the next three hours- just sit on the beach and burn? The Rolex Hobart Yacht Race was leaving the harbor as we were leaving the beach. We were sitting in traffic anyway so I asked to for a quick stop so we could get photos. There were several side streets along the road. The director said NO we will be late for the jet boat ride. Well, the jet boat is easy to take and runs every 30 minutes-a no brainer to do later or on your own at minimal cost. However, seeing all the yachts from above the harbor is a once in a lifetime view...opportunities missed- but this is a daily occurrence with A&K. Next was the zoo- I told the director before we caught the ferry that the one thing we wanted to do was the photos with the koalas. We came to the koalas and the booth was open. I said can I go and get our tickets? The response was no- stay with the group. The Koala pics were only US $25~ A&K should have had tickets for the 5 families on the tour. This was a low cost opportunity to make the trip special for everyone. By the time our tour finished, we were #32 in line with the ferry leaving in 1 hour. Geez! We then fly to the outback. Miserable experience- Fly economy squeezed in like sardines. I asked for a coke- they said: are you with the Disney tour? no.. then you have to pay for your own drink... ? The outback tours were long, super hot and boring. To see Ayers Rock and the Olgas once from an air-conditioned bus is ok but to do it for two days in 45 C is crazy! The afternoon activity for kids was aboriginal dot painting. But, it was scheduled at 1:00 pm (blazing sun) and they wanted them to walk to the city center and do it outdoors. No one attended. I went to the tour director and told her- the guy playing the didgeridoo had better come to the hotel and play indoors. It was planned for all of us to be outside with no kid interaction. She did adjust and have us in the gathering room so we had air conditioning but only at my request. Then we were suppose to be there for a "food" experience which was a girl walking around with some berries etc on a plate you could taste if you wanted. Then all fed fish for lunch. Finally we arrived at the airport to fly to Cairns and everything was shutting down because we were the last flight out. Disney had left the day before because nothing to do there but take a pic and be scorching hot. A&K just held us over wasting time/a day. The snorkel dive in Cairns was a problem because we had all paid for what we thought was a small group tour only to find A&K was combining several groups to lower their overhead costs; hence, the schedule was for 87 people to be on one boat! It didn't matter because it was raining and the trip was cancelled. We arrived in Cairns ONLY TO BE BUSSED to Port Douglas for 1.5 hours. No one had eaten since 11:00 am when we arrived at the Pullman hotel at 7:30 pm. They unloaded our luggage outdoors so it was soaking wet. We had to wait turns in the lobby for a golf cart to take each family to their rooms. We had no internet the first night, the shower head was broken and the knob fell off the whirly tub. To improvise, A&K set a tour at the wildlife habitat for koala pictures (better late than never) Only 2 families attended- by this time everyone was done. We booked our own incredible experience for behind the scenes. We got to go in the nursery and hold the babies etc- Brilliant! The itinerary was to hold us for NY Eve, but we jumped ship and flew to Sydney (all costly last minute) but we were trying to salvage our holiday and glad we did- the fireworks were amazing and a relaxing time flying home the next morning instead of a 2 am wakeup and transport! Basically, A&K did not want to pay for the NY eve rooms so held everyone in Port Douglas until the next morning- then flew everyone back to Sydney. Overall, Horrible experience with A&K- so sad to have wasted so much money and my husbands coveted family time off work. All the good experiences were booked and paid for out of pocket + in addition to our high priced A&K family tour package. Don't Do It!

Co-founded by current CEO Geoffrey Kent in 1962, Abercrombie & Kent started out in modest fashion as an African safari operator, but quickly grew into one of the world's premiere luxury travel brands. Today they cover the globe, with 50 offices worldwide. What Makes Abercrombie & Kent Stand Out? Award-winning luxury tour operator Insider-access opportunities Focus on culture, wildlife, and history  Abercrombie & Kent is one of the world’s leading luxury travel companies. The emphasis is very much on luxury here -- whether it’s small-group travel (limit of 18 per group), tailor-made journeys, expedition cruises, train travel, African safaris, European barge cruises, or any of its many other offerings, just about everything A&K arranges is top of the line. They are specific in their travel style, promising superior and attentive service, comfort, and cultural exploration. While this may seem exclusionary - and the prices are quite a barrier to entry. Luxury travel might have a reputation for being swanky and even perhaps a bit dull, particularly for those who travel for adventure, the image being a glass of champagne all day long, moving from meal to meal, sitting on the private deck of a cruise ship. This perspective is a misnomer however, as there is quite a bit of action available on tours with Abercrombie & Kent. Enjoy invigorating walks, hikes, get outdoors to remote locations, meeting local people and learning about their cultures; experience the thrill of getting up close to waterfalls, and poise your camera for the perfect shot on a safari. Then retire to your room for a cocktail before dinner. Who Will Enjoy Traveling With Abercrombie & Kent? Ages 65-75 Luxury travelers Abercrombie & Kent travelers embody an adventurous spirit, but enjoy the finer things as well. “Elegant exploration” is one way to put it. These travelers appreciate a slow pace and personalized attentive service. The age range tends to be older - baby boomers and seniors looking for a relaxing experience, with many cultural touch-points, but not overly “immersive” as their children and grandchildren might prefer. This is upper crest travel at its finest - though Abercrombie & Kent makes a concerted effort to be worldly and inviting, your experience is definitely a luxury version of any given destination. This is a travel company that offers Private Jet trips, some of which offering the chance to meet an Abercrombie & Kent family member. Think private after hours tours, exclusive outings with artisans, chefs, and winemakers; spectacular meals and accommodations that go a touch beyond comfortable. Imagine the civilized world of cocktail hour and dressing for dinner, but in the context of exploration. Perhaps you’re sipping your negroni on the deck of your private suite in Kenya, gazing out across the savannah with elephants silhouetted in the distance, against the dusty yellow sunlight of dusk. This is the wonderful travel world waiting for you with Abercrombie & Kent. The majority of A&K’s guests come from North America or Britain. A&K trips are definitely not for the budget traveler, but they offer deluxe lodgings and transport and exceptionally attentive service, which their customers value highly. Top Destinations Abercrombie & Kent made its name offering luxury small group and private safaris in Africa. Today they go around the world, but with the same luxurious approach. Luxury doesn’t mean same-old, same-old or unadventurous though. Groups head off on Antarctic expeditions or Uganda gorilla safaris, visit Tibet or Machu Picchu, join a European or Nile river cruise, or travel to India’s Pushkar Fair. You can ride deluxe trains or fly across Africa by private jet with Abercrombie & Kent. Or you can outline your own tailor-made journey under the guidance of an A&K consultant, then be accompanied by their guides throughout. Abercrombie & Kent Travel Style There could be a tendency to view Abercrombie & Kent as old fashioned when it comes to travel style. However there is a difference between old fashioned and appreciating a traditional travel style. Those who travel with Abercrombie & Kent do expect a certain kind of experience. From luggage handling to having the salad fork in the correct order, from short or non-existent lines to special assistance when needed. These expectations have become the blueprint for an Abercrombie & Kent travel experience. Transportation on an Abercrombie & Kent tour is almost always private and chartered. Exceptions would of course be rail journeys, but here you would have a private car and access to first class dining and viewing. Your journey may involve anything from helicopters, private jets, luxury coaches, and yachts. Walking is a common part of most guided tours, but you can expect simple and easy distances during your A&K itinerary. (Unless of course you are on a Gorilla Trek!). Accommodation follows a similar pattern. Luxury hotels, safari lodges, villas, you name it and it’s probably available. Why Choose a Tour With Abercrombie & Kent? Abercrombie & Kent promises to deliver an authentic, “insider” travel experience, such as seeing Machu Picchu under the guidance of its former resident archaeologist. You can even ride an elegant train to get there. In Tanzania, A&K runs its own luxury safari camps. From the time they first meet you at the airport until trip end, Abercrombie & Kent promises that your trip will go as smoothly as possible -- and that their entire global organization will be dedicated toward that goal. It may strike some as contradictory to see certain parts of the world in luxury. Some countries have luxury homes, but they are only available to tourists and travelers because the locals simply occupy a different social sphere. There is a unique dependency on tourism in much of the world. Abercrombie & Kent takes this seriously, doing their philanthropic part wherever possible, giving back to the local communities.

I was completely blown away

The most beautiful holiday country I have ever visited All that I've seen, far exceeded my expectations. Especially the gorillas. We had a fantastic guide Anthony Kato. He brought us each day along bumpy, smooth and non asphalted roads to our lodge. Most lodges I found good. Our guide has told much about Uganda, such as habits, tradition, the population and so on. Thought it was clever that he knew a lot about the animals in the park. I got through his explanation a very different and positive image of Uganda. Sure to recommend Uganda and Scenic Trails Safaris to others.

Can't say enough about Waterberry Lodge in Zambia.

Can't say enough about Waterberry Lodge in Zambia. The peaceful location on the Zambezi River is lovely. The beautiful grounds, friendly & helpful staff, great food, attention to detail and boat rides on the river are amazing. Not to mention nearby Victoria Falls. This has been a restful two night stop on a three week trip with my son. Wish we could stay longer. Thanks to Anna for recommending it.

ZERO CUSTOMER SERVICE

No understanding of customer service AT ALL. Had more interest in talking at me about how great he was, and why his company is expensive, then helping me with my enquiry. I tried to get him back to answering my enquiry a few times, and he ended up telling me I should go to another agent, so that's exactly what I will do. I dodged a bullet with that one!!

I was looking for something special for…

I was looking for something special for my husbands 60th birthday and made an enquiry on line. The very next day I was contacted by Claire and with her help and expertise I was able to make his birthday very special indeed. Nothing was too much trouble and she always answered my questions promptly, putting my mind at ease and offering support and suggestions for the trip. We had a most memorable trip and would not hesitate to recommend Claire and African Budget Safaris to anyone. Thank you Claire, we will be in touch shortly to plan our next visit.

This was a very professional and very good experience. From the time we contacted Chris from the US, we had all our questions answered. The safari was an unforgettable experience in my life. Thoroughly enjoyable and memorable from the excellent accommodations to the sights that we saw.

An unfortunate experience

When I first contacted African Budget Safaris I sent them a few options of their site which I was interested in. My trip got delayed, so I got back in touch several weeks later. When I contacted ABS (African Budget Safaris) again, I asked which options would be available on the date I specified. I got one which was quite expensive. I asked for alternatives and got one. These were very different tours and the itinerary of the more expensive one was more appealing. It was more costly than I planned for, but since this is a once in a lifetime opportunity for me, I decided to go through with it. ABS is an agent which shows options from other operators. The tour I booked was operated by VIVA Safaris and I sincerely regret not booking directly with them. I departed with a small group which I got along with quite well. On the second day I found out I got separated from this group and went to a more luxurious lodge. There I was on my own while the rest of the group would be enjoying their tours and dinner together. I had another shared day afterwards and after some information sharing I found out I was paying about 6000 ZAR more than one of the others. This was all money going to my expensive lodge, which I never asked for. In fact, when I booked I told ABS I was fine with camping, so I feel they were very negligent in providing me with information regarding my lodging options. I immediately contacted ABS during my stay, to let my objections be known. I was told I was provided options and this was the one I chose. While technically correct, I was not given different accommodation options. Another argument I heard was that all options are provided on the website. But I did not look on the site anymore, since I was naive enough to believe I would receive a decent level of service. ABS has a lot of positive reviews, so I expected them to offer a service in picking the right tour. Instead the approach was to do the minimum amount of work for the highest possible commission. All contact I had, from the very start was nothing but defensive. I decided to phone again. Harriet was my contact and instead of trying to help me resolve this situation reasonably, I was literally shouted at. Harriet was only being helpful and hiding behind the fact that I was given options (2 exactly) and that all options are available on the website. I remained calm, told her about my expectations from an agent and that I would like to move to the less expensive accommodation with the other people from the group and hopefully get some restitution for the difference in price. By the end of the call Harriet told me she would find out what she could do. All this took place in between my tours where there often was poor reception and no chance for contact outside of office hours. The end result was that I could move to the other, cheaper, accommodation, but it was not possible for me to get a partial refund. I feel I was taken advantage of and gouged by a greedy and unhelpful person who only had her eyes on the highest commission rate. I do not recommend African Budget Safaris to anyone. They are not budget, and any difficulties you may encounter will not be resolved as they will point to the operator. If you read this, take some additional time and find a direct tour operator, or an agent with a reputation of being service oriented. Edit and update: After submitting my online experience, Terry, the manager contacted me. He was on leave for and was not informed about what happened in his absence. He let me know that my complaints were just and he addressed them in the best way possible at this point in time. I am impressed with his communication and handling of the matter which makes me believe my experience was an incident which ABS will prevent from happening again.

Worst company ever

Please do not waste time paying to this company. As they steal your entire tour amount if your visa gets rejected which is not informed in advance. I lost around 3 lakhs due to cox and kings as they had assured me I will get my visa which got rejected and now they won’t refund it. It’s a fraud company

Simply amazing!

Our Deeper Africa Safari was simply amazing. We fell in love with the country of Tanzania, it's natural richness, and it's beautiful people. Our guide Ammy was a big part of what made our safari special. We were able to be with Ammy for the entire safari and we enjoyed his perspective on everything from animal behavior to his culture and country. Ammy, who is also a dad, was so sweet and patient with our talkative 10 year old son. He even put up with our many questions with patience and kindness. It's wonderful to know that there are still places in the world like Tanzania where the animals can live in peace. It was mind-blowing to see the migration on the Serengeti and my heart broke with happiness to watch so many elephants roaming about in beautiful Taringire National Park. Karen and Will planned a perfect family safari for us. We stayed in amazing camps where the employees were so welcoming and charming. I would highly recommend Deeper Africa for anyone who wants to see and experience East Africa. We are already planning our next trip back and because of our wonderful experience, my son wants to move and work there some day.

Highly recommend Deeper Africa!

It's hard to put into words how incredible our trip to Tanzania and Kenya was thanks to Deeper Africa. Karen had covered every imaginable detail and our 14 day adventure took place with an incredible guide, remarkable wildlife viewing, wonderful and welcoming camps. We knew this would be the trip of a lifetime, but now know we must return and not only do we highly recommend Deeper Africa, we would not consider another company for our travels. The willingness to work with clients to customize a trip, careful attention to detail and true love for Africa sets this company apart.

I really enjoyed my trip to Africa, with Expect In Africa Safari.

The safari guide was very knowledgeable about culture, as well as African flora and fauna. It was never a problem to adopt what the team desired to do into the safari. The guide was enthusiastic to share African culture and wildlife information and was as excited for us to see things, as we were to see it. The guide respected the wildlife and was always looking for our safety

A Truly Honest Review of Galloping Safaris

Well, overall we had a very nice and memorable experience with Galloping Safaris. We highly recommend this tour operator for any safari trip in Tanzania, especially to couples who are looking for a private luxury trip. If you are seriously thinking of booking your trip with Galloping Safaris, we suggest you to read this long but very honest and detailed review. It was our first time in Tanzania and our first safari trip. Doing it as part of our Honeymoon trip, we wanted a private safari for the two of us with a private guide/driver and we wanted to stay at the most luxurious lodges of Ngorongoro Conservation area, Serengeti, Lake Ndutu, Lake Manyara, Arusha and Kilimanjaro. We started doing some research on the available Tanzanian Safari tour operators back in October 2018. We discussed over whatsapp chatting and video calls and dozens of emails with at least 6 operators. We needed to be sure as it is a common secret that there are many unprofessional companies that would cheat you in every possible way. We ended up to Galloping Safaris and to Walter personally as he sounded very certain about what he was promising us. He was very responsive and he did his best to secure for us everything we asked for within the budget we had available. There are also other operators appearing as experts in luxury private safari tours. But guess what...They are far (even 3 times) more expensive that Galloping Safaris without any extra service of what you will get from Galloping Safaris. With Galloping Safaris we secured the best deal we could as we manage to spend the amount we had initially in mind while we stayed at the most high-end lodges of the area like. To mention some of them: &Beyond Lake Manyara Tree Lodge The Highlands Asilia Ngorongoro Lake Ndutu Luxury Lodge Kubu Kubu Luxury Lodge Walter is a very promising professional, he is a hard-selling guy that will earn your trust. He is very well connected to all the Hotels and Lodges Managers. He will try to satisfy all your requests and needs. Most of the times, he will succeed to do so. Walter kept for us the best Safari driver, Joshua, a 37-year old guy with a 17 year experience on game-drive in Tanzania. Very adventurous, excellent english speaker, very knowledgeable about everything regarding the area, seasonal trends, animals, plantation, people and tribes, safari secrets. We visited the Maasai village where we had an amazing experience there. We had a very good time with Joshua as we were discussing with him throughout our trip spending with him at least 6 hours per day. He was very fun but also very careful and cautious at the same time. He was an amazing driver with an outstanding instinct about where we should be driven in order to see lions, cheetahs, hippos, wildebeest, elephants, zebras, giraffes etc. We spent with Joshua the first 4 days of our main safari trip in Ngorongoro, Serengeti and Lake Ndutu. Over the last 2 days, visiting Lake Manyara, Arusha and Kilimanjaro for hiking, we had another guide/driver named Kennedy. He was very kind and helpful and fun but he didn't have the excitement and the instinct of Joshua nor he was such a good driver. One negative comment is that although we have asked for 2 pairs of binoculars to find inside the Safari 4x4 truck and we received a written confirmation about it, there was only one pair and in a very bad condition. So, when we came across to animals that were far away we could not enjoy them not even with binoculars. Apart from the Safari trip, we planned to spend 5 days to Zanzibar prior to safari. We asked Walter from Galloping safaris to make a research on 5-star beachfront resorts. The truth is that by the time (beginning of November 2018) we started looking for hotel in Zanzibar, the best resorts seemed to be already fully booked for the period of New Year's eve. Our options were extremely limited. Walter managed to reserve a room at Neptune Pwani Beach Resort and spa which was a 5-star resort. We asked for a Sea front Ocean View Room and we received a written confirmation from Galloping Safaris about it. However, when we arrived at the hotel, the front desk personnel had no idea about the room we had booked and pre-paid the 35% amount of it via deposit. Unfortunately, the room was terrible and it did not correspond to a 5-star accommodation. We wouldn't rate it not even as a 3-star. No adequate light blocking when the curtains were closed as the fabric was not blackout. We could not stay in bed and sleep after 7 am. We managed to stick some black plastic bags on the windows but again the problem was still there as there were other windows high enough that we could not close. Another aspect of the poor accommodation and room amenities was the bathroom and toilet. In fact it was open space with the remaining room and the bedroom as there wasn't any wall or door to close only some wooden grilles with open gaps in between the wooden components. As a result, it was impossible to have any privacy inside the bathroom or the toilet. Not convenient at all for newly married couples... The breakfast and the food in general in every single restaurant of the hotel was simply terrible, extremely salty and not what you would expect from a 5-star resort. We had paid for an all-inclusive package for alcoholic. However, they charged us for the wine we had over dinner. The personnel was over all uneducated, not speaking english. Some of them were rude but there were also a couple of exceptions. In general, our accommodation experience in Zanzibar was terrible and although this was not a Galloping Safaris' fault, we would expect that they would have protected us from experiencing such a terrible stay especially during our honeymoon and new year's eve period. The positive aspect of Zanzibar was our butler/private guide there named Mussa Hassan from "Zanziplanet Tours & Travel". Mussa is a Galloping Safaris' external colleague who is taking care of the customers visiting Zanzibar. He is an amazing guy in every single aspect. He is very well respected in Zanzibar, very well connected to Hotel and high-end restaurant managers, very adaptable to customer's needs and last minute changes. We believe that if Galloping Safaris had introduced us to Mussa Hassan and Zanziplanet Tours and Travel early enough, at the time we were searching for our accommodation in Zanzibar, we wouldn't have ended up to Neptune Pwani Resort and Spa as we are sure that Mussa, who lives and operates to Zanzibar, would have found a better solution for us.

Fantastic 7-day Northern Tanzania safari with Lawrence

Me and wife had a great 7-day Northern Tanzania tailor-made safari, covering Arusha, Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Serengeti and Ngorongoro, with our tour guide Lawrance. We have seen Big 5 and covered all the great parts on the national parks we visited. Also visited Masai village, Olduvai Gorge and had a walking safari on Arusha NP. I started planning the safari just 2 weeks before arrival, which is not usual comparing to advised 6-months ahead the forum. Walter always responded quick & promptly to my questions and made changes on the itinerary. This had been the decision factor against the other options. I always felt that the change on the itinerary was fair. He assured me that everything will go as planned, although the international payment made to their account the day before arrival. Lawrence, our tour guide with us for 7 days and more than 700km, has more than 15 years experience on doing safari on the visited national parks. He treated us as his close friend and take care of us for all needs. He was absolutely fantastic. Spotted animals which is really hard to see. In one case we had been the first car to spot the hiding leopard, which is 100 meters far from us, on Serengeti NP. In a short time more than 10 car happened to be there. Same happened for cheetahs and rhinos as well. He give brief information on each wild animal that we have seen for the first time. Had all trust on him to be showing us the wildlife we are keen to see. Every day he asked if any special arrangement needs to be made, if we are keen to see a specific animal and suggested a change on the itinerary which helped us to spend more time on Ngorongoro NP than planned one. I am happy to suggest Galloping Safari and especially our tour guide Lawrence for a great safari. Sukhran Lawrence Baba. :)

What an amazing trip

My wife and I knew we wanted to do a safari trip for our honeymoon and we decided to go with Walter. It was an absolutely awesome experience. We had Laurence as our guide and we could not have asked for anyone better. He was very professional, personable, patient, funny, and knowledgeable. He went the extra mile during our game drives. He was very easy to talk to and by the time we left, it felt like he had become a part of our family. We were very happy with our experience and we plan to visit again in the future and it'll definitely be with Galloping Safari.

Superb

Arista at Go2Africa arranged a superb holiday for my family and I for our recent trip to South Africa. She recommended staying at Shamwari Game Reserve at the end of our drive along the Garden Route, which turned out to be an absolutely sensation place. Nothing went wrong during our trip and we found dealing with Go2Africa was excellent. I would recommend using them for your Southern African holiday planning.

What a fantastic trip

What a fantastic trip. This really is an excellent way to see wildlife very close to you. From the first time you put your canoe in the water you start seeing all the African wildlife you’ve dreamt of as you slowly cruise past them on the water. The paddling is much easier than I imagined and the canoes are really very stable. It turned out to be one of the best things I’ve ever done

We had the most amazing trip!

We had the most amazing trip! The flights and connections all worked perfectly, the camp was brilliant (Katie and the team at Macatoo are fantastic, we’d recommend African Horseback Safaris to anyone!), the wildlife & countryside stunning and horses were perfect for Nicky and me. I can’t begin to describe all the great experiences we had but cantering with a herd of zebra was probably top of a very long list.

Our trip far exceeded expectations

Our trip far exceeded expectations. We combined East Africa with 4 other countries and the transition from one to the other was seamless. Accommodations were excellent, tours and transfers perfect. The diversity and numbers of animals was amazing. Saw the big 5 in the span of 2 hours the second day."

Bad trip leader experience

The activities were a mixture of good and repetitive and the description of the game drives seems a little embellished. We didn't encounter hardly any elephants and the leopard sighting is apparently not as common as one might think (2-3 a week according to local guide). While we were "fortunate" to observe one, it was so far away that only a 400mm lens would get to see it, but that's after you fight through about 40 vehicles all converging to a single space in order to catch a glimpse before the park warden hurries you on because your time is up! It's also a madhouse trying to get into the park. There is no orderly fashion while up to a hundred vehicles all vie to be first in the gate (this is at Yala). The biggest downside to the trip was our trip leader. On two occasions when we had questions about the activities, he became very defensive and argumentative, and when trying to walk away from the conversation so that it didn't escalate further, he followed us intent on exclaiming what a good guide he's been and that we were the problem. We walked away again, and yet he still following us turning the conversation into harassment. I was glad when the trip ended to get away from him and if it weren't for having another back-to-back Exodus trip (see Maldives review) immediately following this one, I would have never wanted to travel with Exodus again given that experience. In sum, trip leader very poor (astonishingly so) and trip itinerary could improve by offering more variety/flexibility to wildlife viewings rather than doing the same repeat walks 3 times. All food was at hotels so not much of a variety or local fare encountered. Lovely country and lovely people though and group was great!

The most stunning trip of my life

Its been a long held dream of mine to go to the Antarctic and the trip I booked via Exodus far exceeded my expectations. Amazing scenery, captivating and exciting wildlife, a plethora of facts, figures and general education from the on board experts and I can claim a world first to boot from my holiday to the Antarctic and below the polar circle. The landscapes and wildlife. The scenery is breathtaking, from the continent itself to the many islands and icebergs floating away from the land mass and glaciers. I have never seen anywhere quite so remote and in many ways barren, yet at the same time rich in life and activity. And you will never get over the amazing shapes of the ice along with the vivid blues you see in the glaciers and icebergs. Quite sensational. The penguins are of course the stars, but the frequency of whale sightings and fluking along with seals and many type of birds including the mighty albatross just make the experience even more rewarding. The tour leader is in effect an Expedition Leader fronting a large team of professional from a range of countries. Ours was wonderful. An enormous personality and with the best sense of humour coupled with safety and huge amounts of professional integrity. The people in the expedition team were sensational. They come from a mix of backgrounds, however all have skills in subjects ranging from glaciology to water sports instructor, polar researcher to the armed forces, historian to nature and much more. Not only do you get the chance to attend lectures and learn from them on a really diverse range of topics, but they also accompany the trips off the ship and interact with you during meals and drinks as well as on time when you are cruising. They have both professionally and also personally empowering stories to tell and they really enhanced my trip in a way I did not think possible. If you want to do any of the activities then book them up as soon as you make your reservation. Spaces are limited and I was unable to camp on the ice or take part in kayaking. Don't worry about being cold. Its not actually as cold as you imagine and the ship is fantastically warm and homely. The jacket and boots they supply you with are excellent. Concentrate on buying good quality thermals in layers along wit6h waterproof trousers and gloves and a warm fleece or wool hat. Edit your photos as you go along and always be ready to shoot stuff. The onboard team will help you with this as they have photographers ready to help with your trip. I was in the first group of paddleboarders believed to have ever paddleboarded south of the Antractic Circle. Not only had I never done it before, but we got to claim a world first. Finally don't delay going any longer. It may not be a cheap trip, however it is so amazing and experience that you will not regret the time and expense in going.

A magical trip! One of my best ever!

This trip far exceeded my expectations on every level. The underwater wildlife encounters were superior to any other snorkeling I've done. There's an abundance of things to see and coupled with the chance to scuba dive and excellent water conditions - it's a top notch destination. The boat was very comfortable, the crew was excellent and took care of every need, and the food was awesome. Ranks as one of my all-time favorites!

Race to the bottom

73 days from Nairobi, Kenya to Cape Town, South Africa, Jan through Mar Do you enjoy people not following rules that affect you directly? Disregard of 10pm curfew, smoking and noise restrictions, or environmental welfare? Recurring theft of your well-marked belongings (food, drinks, power cords, etc.)? Repeat damages to your stuff due to negligence (sleeping bag, backpacks, etc.)? Incessant juvenile jokes about farts, vomit, drunkenness, burps, sex, or making fun of others? Constant loud music rather than enjoyment of nature? Purposeful ignoring of guide’s requests to the extent that it may endanger you… Person buying drugs in broad daylight and near cop – you could be made guilty by association Person drinking while driving, guilty by association if open container found by authorities Lack of food because some people abuse how much they take or stash away Waiting for the people who are not prepared, not following the schedule or could care less that they are enjoying themselves while you WAIT – hey you paid the same price, but they enjoy while you WAIT People not sharing the workload saying they have more important things to do like washing hair, downloading pictures, making phone calls. Once again you paid the same price, but they enjoy while you WORK People who make you miss optional events you sign up for because they came back too late or crossed your name out of events you have signed up for replacing it with their own? People claiming that they don’t have money to give tips (the way many survive in Africa) while they carry thousands of dollars of equipment, have money for drinks every night, buy drugs, give each other’s birthday gifts, etc. Embarrassing to be associated with these uncaring people. What bad reputation! People pushing elder of a village out of the way to take picture? Others entering locals’ homes without asking? Clearly invading their privacy, acting as if these people don’t matter. People refusing to share tents, storage areas, workload, space to take pictures, etc. The me, me, me syndrome leading to people being hurt due to pushing to be there first, etc. Most of this could have been address by the guide but he chose not to be involved so it festered for 73 days, making the bullies get all they wanted and the non-bullies, second citizens – incredibly sad. THANKFULLY, Africa, its people and nature are AMAZING, and you push that aside long enough to enjoy it until you return to the bus and face the sad reality of your tour cohorts. Overall, this felt like a race to the bottom or the lowest common denominator instead of an uplifting experience.

Not what we signed up for.

After much researching we chose absolute Africa as they were the cheapest. From their website you will see that there is an emphasis put on teamwork etc, something what we were looking forward to. As it turned out the owner "taxi Dave" entered into a deal with a group on the trip. This group paid a minimal fee and did absolutely nothing, didn't set up their tents, didn't take part in cooking all for a minimal fee, 1 pound a day. Not bad!! Ourselves and another couple who were on the trip were never told about this extra deal so when we saw this group doing nothing there was an unease within the whole group. We took the northern star route. Also you need to be carefull as the itinerary doesn't give you a true reflection of game park entry's and we had to pay into 2 game parks that were suppose to be included in our fee (got a fluffy explain action when we asked the owner). The itinerary says that you go to 7 countries, realistically you only see 3/4 and the other countries are just in transit and to top it all off, the last country, Kenya, they put you on a shuttle bus (nothing to do with absolute Africa) in Tanzania and let you go through the border on your own. Further when we emailed the boss "taxi Dave" he was extremely unhelpful and rude. Have some good memories but sour taste left, particularly with the ignorant owner. If going again, would definitely go with a different company.

Amazing

I did the Wildlife Journey, about 2 months from Kampala to Cape Town. It was an amazing itinerary and exceeded my expectations in terms of animal sightings, scenery, campsites, etc. Our guide Peter was absolutely 5 star!! He was extremely knowledgeable about the animals, history, local culture, etc. He was the best guide I've ever encountered on any tour anywhere, bar none. The truck and camping equipment were excellent. The cooking teams did a wonderful job and the food was excellent throughout the trip. My only suggestion would be to add another transit camp between Zanzibar and Lake Malawi because there were several very long travel days in that section. Either make the trip a day longer or spend two nights instead of three at Kande Beach.

The amazing places we saw

I liked everything about my RS tour of the Oregon Coast - the amazing places we saw; our well-informed and caring tour director Kathleen Fitzgerald; the capable and quietly efficient bus driver Tim; the vastly knowledgeable Earth Science specialist John Ford; the excellent local guides Audrey and Mike; the variety of group meals and eating locations; the convenient accommodations; and the wonderful tour co-participants. Also, before the tour, helpful Road Scholar staff and volunteers checked on all my health and nutrition needs. In all - an exquisite experience, which made me rush and book another Road Scholar tour for September. :-) Georgiana

Road Scholar Owes My Mom A Huge Apology and Refund. Highly advise AGAINST using them.

Let me preface this story with some background about myself: I backpacked through most of Europe by myself when I was studying abroad in Ireland. I suffered through horrendous bus rides, getting kicked out of seats on trains, sleeping in questionable hostels, and going weeks without being able to really do laundry. I know how crappy it can be to actually get from one place to another, and how worth it is to suffer through all of that just to lay eyes on something magnificent. And yet, Road Scholar has, without a doubt, managed to give me the single worst travel experience I've ever had in my entire life, and we didn't even make it off the ground. I would never, ever, EVER recommend them to anyone looking to go anywhere, and as far as I'm concerned, Road Scholar needs to seriously reconsider their travel-making procedures and give my mother a huge apology and refund. (Also, I'm only in my twenties, so I have a lot of years ahead of me to make referrals.) It all started with Road Scholar not getting us flights. We claimed our spot on a trip to the Lake region in Northern Italy, but no one ever called us back about any travel arrangements. It appeared we were on the trip IN Italy, but no one had bothered to make any arrangements to get us there. My mother called and left messages, emailed people, and the only response we got was that our flight should be booked at some point in early May (when our trip was set to start on May 22). Road Scholar urges people to book their flights through their preferred travel agency, which is who didn't call us back. Road Scholar, to market themselves as educational tourism rather than shallow "I just want to see things" tourism, partners up with different educational institutions, and ours was through Trinity College. The director of the Italian programs called us asking for our travel information, since she didn't have it yet. Interesting news to us. We were then told that we could make travel arrangements of our own (even though we were paying Road Scholar to do it for us) and then inform the program of our travel plans and how we were getting to our hotel. So we started to investigate making our own plans, when someone finally called us back saying that they were taking care of our travel arrangements, and they "didn't know why we hadn't had them made for us already." The director of the program was happy to hear this, because the Lake region of Italy is not as easily accessible as other areas. We asked for upgraded seats because my mom has had both of her knees replaced, and while that doesn't inhibit her in the slightest from being active, it limits where she can sit on planes. In a cramped regular economy seat with no leg room on an international flight that was going to last 8-10 hours, she wouldn't have been able to walk off the plane because of how her knees would cramp up. But they said they could make the arrangements (which is also advertised on their website) so that was that. We got our itinerary, accommodations, and were all set. We were booked through United and Lufthansa (neither of which either of us will EVER book through again), so I downloaded the United app onto my iPhone so I could check us in and make sure we had mobile copies of our boarding passes in addition to the paper ones my mom printed out. We were all set to fly from Cincinnati to Washington D.C., from D.C. to Frankfurt, and from Frankfurt down to Verona where we would be meeting up with the group -- which, by the way, we never received any information regarding where the group was meeting, the transportation to the lake resort, etc. Nothing. Just "after you get there" stuff. Then this morning, I woke up to a notification from United Airlines (and a text message alert that I had set up) saying that our flight to D.C. had been cancelled due to weather. Obviously I'm not blaming Road Scholar for that. What I am holding Road Scholar accountable for is what happened next: my mom called the Emergency Hotline (which is a recording -- and I HIGHLY recommend that they change this, because when I studied abroad, we had two emergency hotlines, both of which were always answered by real human beings, one for anything happening in the United States, and the other for the program, which was a different number for each location and a direct line to one of the program directors on the ground in the country you were actually in). We left a voicemail, someone named Mike called us back, and he was an absolute asshole. When you book your flight through a travel agency/group travel organization, if anything happens to your flight, it is the THEIR responsibility to take care of it. We were told by Road Scholar, and it's available on their website: "When you book your airfare through Road Scholar, we're there to help you in case of any emergencies." When Mike called us back and we told him that our flight to D.C. had been cancelled, he told us that he couldn't look up any other flights (on both United and any other airlines) for us to potentially get on to get to D.C for our transatlantic flight. Instead, he told us to call United ourselves and to go to the airport and talk to the desk agent. I then ended up on the phone (and on hold) the entire drive to the airport, which resulted in nothing because tons of flights had been cancelled due to airline politics and weather. We finally got to the desk agent at the airport, had a hell of a time getting rebooked on another flight, and weren't able to get the upgraded seats that we paid extra money for. When we called Road Scholar and Mike back to ask if during the course of our day when we would be traveling (and unable to make phone calls) he would call Lufthansa to at least make the airline aware of our need for better seating due to my mother's knee replacements, he was unhelpful and rude, at first attempting to refuse calling on our behalf and finally agreeing to, but only after repeatedly telling us "there's no guarantee of those seats" (something we definitely understood because we're not stupid). Our rebooked flight wasn't set to leave until 7:45 PM tonight, putting us in Verona at 4:05 PM the next day (4 hours after the group transfer to the hotel), so we returned home instead of waiting around the airport for 12 hours. We got on both United and Lufthansa's websites and discovered that not only had our original itineraries not been removed, we had been double booked, one for a flight out of North Carolina to Munich through Delta, and another out of D.C. (the 7:45 PM flight) which had a 23 hour layover in Munich. A call to Road Scholar resulted in us being told that we had to contact the airlines. My mother was on the phone, talking to either United representatives or Lufthansa representatives, from about 9:30 AM to 2:00 PM. We were told we had reservations but no tickets, told we had tickets but couldn't see the numbers, told there were seats available for us to get upgraded to but we would have to try to get the desk agent in D.C. to arrange that for us, told that there was no guarantee we could get those seats, and more. It was incredible the amount of bureaucratic bullshit we had to put up with, especially since each airline wouldn't take any responsibility for us getting the seats we paid for and on a new flight, telling us "we'd have to talk to the other company about that." We finally called Road Scholar to see if there was anything more they could do, who encountered the same mess we already had, and all they did was eventually advise us to go back to the airport (a 45 minute drive) and talk to the desk agent to see IF they could put us in the upgraded seats -- ones we had already paid for and my mom couldn't make the trip without! Then when asked how they would be getting us to our destination in the Lake region (which is not an easy place to get to, as I looked up the train and bus schedules myself, because - remember - I have tons of experience at this point traveling on the ground across Europe), they wouldn't outright say what our plans would be, which could've been anything from picking us up in the airport in a car, giving us a damn rental to drive ourselves, or simply paying for tickets and expecting us to haul all our luggage from the airport to the shuttle to the train station in Verona, take the 2+ hour train to a town an hour away from our destination, have to catch a bus to the actual town we were supposed to be in, and then walk the rest of the way there. Seeing what all happened, I would bet it would've been the latter, which isn't a problem for someone like me, but is an issue for someone like my mom. The moral of the story here is that my mom and I shouldn't have had to be on the phone with anyone other than Road Scholar, PERIOD. Seeing as we paid well over $10,000 for this trip, the minute the flight was cancelled, Road Scholar should've called us to let us know that they would be making other arrangements for us to get to our trip in the Lake region of Italy. THEY should've been the ones on the phone, dealing with the airline bureaucrats, working their hardest to get us any combination of flights to get us to Italy in the seats that we paid for. Or, if it really came down to it, they should've made arrangements for us to be on this trip at another point in time, offered us another excursion in its place, or simply given us a refund. Instead, they didn't want to do the jobs that we paid them to do, and we were the ones that had to take time out of our day, which was already scheduled to be a hectic and stressful time because traveling is simply just that, to do Road Scholar's job. They didn't look out for us one single bit and completely and utterly RUINED what was supposed to have been a wonderful trip for me and my mom. My mother has an adventurous and curious soul and hasn't gotten to go to Europe the way she always wanted to. Since I graduated college, my mother suggested taking a mother-daughter trip. This was supposed to be incredibly special for the both of us, getting to go somewhere new together (I hadn't explored Northern Italy much and that's where we decided to go), learning about the food and the culture, and bonding over all the amazing things we were going to be able to do. I think my mom was even more excited about this trip than I was, voraciously reading all the required/recommended reading, practicing Italian in her room so she could order correctly at restaurants, not giving up when we hit little bumps in the road along the way. Instead, we have been nothing but doubtful at best in the entire planning of this trip, and deeply disappointed and angered at worst. I will never again recommend Road Scholars to anyone looking to go on group trips. Instead, I will steer people away and recommend that they either find a better travel agency, book the trip themselves, or go through Rick Steve's program. Road Scholar should issue my mother a refund and an apology or risk being sued.

It was fun to be able to spend time alone with our grandson

We did a grandparent/grandchild trip with Road Scholar and it was a wonderful experience! It was fun to be able to spend time alone with our grandson, and it was fun for him and us to meet new people. We plan to do another trip next year with our other grandson!

Founded in 1975 as Elderhostel, Road Scholar took its new name in 2010. The name change was meant to better reflect the non-profit educational travel organization’s mission, which is to offer lifelong learning opportunities to adults. Besides it’s a clever play on words (the takeoff on Rhodes Scholar), “Road” stands for the journeys the group offers, while “Scholar” indicates the deep devotion to learning that participants possess. What Makes Road Scholar Stand Out? Tours specifically designed for older travelers and with a heavy focus on gaining deeper knowledge through educational activities, led by guides who are experts in a variety of fields. Instructors accompanying Road Scholar trips are experts in their fields, delivering lectures and leading field trips. Trip themes may range from history and culture, language study, and music appreciation to birding, bicycling, and baseball (proving that learning can be light-hearted, too). Traveling with Road Scholar is like a study abroad experience, with classes and instructors, with a group of people the same age who have a similarly extensive hindsight on life - and love to learn. Who Will Enjoy Traveling with Road Scholar? The first thing to note is that Road Scholar trips are specifically intended for travelers 50 and above (often 65+). Open minded, active, and worldly life-long learners who have a sense of adventure and willingness to try new things, will love the cadence of a Road Scholar trip. Road Scholar is often the first guided trip experience for older travelers. Perhaps in your younger days you loved going it alone, planning out your itinerary, and loved the spontaneity of traveling off the beaten path. Now you’re ready to have that same spirit, but with a few more ducks in a row and maybe hit some of the classic sites you missed or didn’t truly appreciate before. Road Scholar has recently added special grandparent-grandchild trips and programs for three generations traveling together. Keep in mind that the focus remains on education, distinguishing Road Scholar trips from most commercial tours. Group sizes with Road Scholar vary, but many small group study tours are limited to 10-24 participants. They are also very friendly to solo travelers - offering many tours for solos and singles where you can meet new friends, and romantic interests! Road Scholar allows for particular good compatibility between you and your tour mates as each journey is designed around specific themes from an educational perspective. Top Destinations With a special Road Scholar operates tours in 150 countries, as well as every state in the U.S. Aside from the educational days, many trips include activities in nature, with hiking, kayaking, and other outdoors experiences. Road Scholar Travel Style Road Scholar creates their itineraries to encourage learning - both in a scholarly way, from knowledgeable guides, and experts in various fields, and also in a holistic way - from the accommodations, meals, and transportation. Your entire journey with Road Scholar is designed as an educational experience. Tours are referred to as “programs”, guides, tour directors, and leaders are “faculty” and they even have an online “campus store”. Programs are designed to be immersive and very different from a canned experience. Walking trips, train treks, small ship cruises, and riverboat voyages are among the options for trip style. Prices typically stay in the budget/value range consistent with the company’s roots. Road Scholar offers may ways to save on their trips. These include scholarships, friend referrals, and various specials and deals throughout the year. Why Choose a Tour With Road Scholar? On a Road Scholar tour you can expect a lot of unique cultural, artistic, historic, and local insights. Meet artisans, learn local crafts, and feel the camaraderie of being around other travelers who enjoy the educational aspect of travel. The original Elderhostel grew out of the vision of the late Marty Knowlton, who spent four years backpacking around Europe while staying in youth hostels -- and wanted American adults to have access to similar cultural experiences. If you consider yourself a lifelong learner and want to spend your vacation amongst others who share your passion for travel and education, Road Scholar is the place for you.

Horrible!

We did not do this trip with REI, but did this trip by ourselves and had the group from REI camp next to use. We were there from 7/19-7/22/2018. My girlfriend and I are experienced backpackers. This is some of the things we noticed WRONG! Most of these have to do with the Leave No Trace policy that are strict rules, especially on the PCT. Some are just common courtesy. Some of these things aren’t bad when it is one person, but when thousands do it, it poses real environmental problems. Guides, especially, should not be teaching future backpackers the wrong mentality about leaving our wildernesses as pristine as possible. LNT = Leave No Trace policy They camped 15-25 (some tents were closer than others) feet from the water. LNT states it should be at least 100 feet away from water to minimize pollution of water. They cooked and washed dishes and brushed their teeth 15 feet from water. LNT states it should be at least 100 feet away from water and camp site to minimize water pollution and critters in/near your campsite. People were putting on sunscreen and then going swimming very shortly after. This clearly pollutes the water. At one point around 7pm, the two guides left the entire group, with their packs on, and did not come back until around 9pm. What if someone tripped and fell and hit their head while the guides were gone? While walking down a really narrow steep section from Mt. Eddy, the group was walking uphill and did not slow down or move over for us at all, forcing us to move to the side. The rule of thumb is that people going downhill have the right away because of momentum. People going up should always yield to those coming down. The entire group hung and and swam right in front of our campsite, even-though they could have very easily gotten into the water and hung out around the water close to their campsite. People obviously go into the back-country to get away from people. Why would these ‘experienced’ guides let 10 people block the view and disturb other people when there was no need. This seemed very rude and selfish. At one point we heard one guide talking about our bear hanging method (The Piutte or PCT method using a locking stick method), saying it was “Unnecessary”. We don’t know what they did for bear safety but we also heard the same guide telling the clients that bears and other animals were not a concern because she had “guided this for 4 years now and have never had any issues”. This is the wrong mentality. Maybe she simply got lucky for 4 years. We heard one of the guides, while talking about glass in the area that “if you feel comfortable, you can just throw it in the fire pit. It’s better than it being on the ground or in the water”. This is the wrong mentality. They should inform the guide, and the guide should make a conscious effort to pack it out, versus simply throwing it into a fire pit where a ranger is simply going to spread the ashes away from the pit, later spreading the glass around.

Outstanding

Lightning Will Johnson Just got home from an 11 day expedition around Svalbard aboard the Ocean Nova. Quark Expeditions is a first rate outfit. Outstanding service, food, and exploration. We were able to kayak on 9 different occasions in addition to our shore excursions. The crew was outstanding and did everything they could to make our trip memorable. I rate them 10 out of 10.

When you think of REI, you probably think first of stores that sell quality outdoor equipment and gear. But REI also has a travel division called REI Adventures, which has been leading active outdoor adventures around the world for the past 25 years. What Makes REI Adventures Stand Out? Known for their top quality outdoor gear, REI’s trips are specifically designed for the active adventure traveler. As a company they are dedicated to helping people see the world through the lens of nature and outdoor adventure. Even though this is their focus, they do also enrich their itineraries with cultural encounters, great meals with local touches, and exploring the destination off the hiking trail.    Aside from their many trip options, from women-only departures to family friendly outings, they also offer volunteering trips, for those travelers interested in making a difference through their travel. These are also outdoor focused and involve things like wildlife habitat restoration and trail maintenance. It’s clear that REI takes their role as an outfitter as well as travel provider seriously and strive to help protect the areas they explore to keep them as pristine and undisturbed as possible. Most trips are small groups, and are intended for those who are physically fit. Satisfy all your active adventure cravings on a trip with REI where you’ll meet like minded travelers and come home with stories to tell. Who Will Enjoy Traveling With REI Adventures? REI trips are very active adventure focused, with the emphasis is on getting outdoors and enjoying nature. If you are the kind of traveler for whom putting on a pair of hiking boots and hitting the trail for a several hour excursion in the wilderness is an ideal and really, crucial, aspect of your travel experience, these trips are for you. The space in your suitcase that might have been dedicated to makeup, ties, jewelry, or cufflinks is replaced with outdoor travel accessories. Getting out in nature with REI means anything from hard core activities like extreme whitewater rafting and trekking up Mount Kilimanjaro, to family safaris and cruises to Antarctica. The focal point is being outside, learning about nature, and being active. That said, this is travel after all, albeit adventure travel, but that doesn’t have to mean no time to slow down and get some cultural experiences in too. Simply that exploring culture and history is secondary to the outdoor travel aspect. Everyone from mild adventure travelers to hard core adventurers and adrenaline junkies will be right at home on a trip with REI. Trips are moderately priced, with several family friendly, solo traveler, and women-only options available. Because their core focus is in active travel, a certain level of physical fitness is expected. A wide range of ages are welcome, though the core age group is between 18-40. On Family Friendly trips it is recommended that children be no younger than 8 years old. Not all activities will be open to the younger travelers in the group, but these trips are specifically designed to make sure everyone has something fun to do! Top Destinations REI travels to destinations with an eye toward the outdoor activities to be enjoyed. Whether this means an African safari camping under the stars, a multi day hike through some of the world’s most incredible National Parks, or a trekking journey in Nepal. They offer departures on all 7 continents, with an impressive number of Antarctica tours available. they focus on National Parks, mountain regions, hikes, and popular safari and white water rafting locations. REI Adventures Travel Style Each of REI’s 150 trips -- which reach all seven continents -- is rated 1 through 5 for activity level. Trips rated 1(Relaxed) and 2(Easy Active) are ideal for families with younger kids, older travelers seeking some invigoration without, you know, climbing cliffs or barreling through whitewater, or completely novice active outdoor travelers. Trips that are rated Moderate are also great for novices, but those interested in a slightly bigger challenge physically. Those trips rated 4(Vigorous) and 5(Strenuous) often require a doctor’s note to ensure you are aware of the risk, and able to keep up with the physical demands of 10+ hours a day of extreme activity, dramatically changing elevations, and steep uneven terrain. Camping is a common accommodation style for REI Adventures trips - though you usually will not be required to do your own set up and break down, and in most cases (not all) hot running water is available. Other types of accommodation include rustic lodges, and basic hotels. Why Choose a Tour With REI Adventures? For an exhilarating and invigorating deep dive into nature and the outdoors, choose REI Adventures. This is their core focus and they do it remarkably well. Travelers who like to explore destinations through the lens of active travel will be right at home with REI Adventures. If you’re looking to expand your horizons and perhaps challenge what you previously thought you were capable of (such as learning to scale a mountain, or graduate from class 3 to class 4 whitewater rafting) these trips are for you. This is a also a great travel opportunity to make new friends with like interests! You are sure to meet many fellow outdoorsy, active travelers -- whether you’re hiking through Tuscany, trekking to Machu Picchu, exploring Utah’s Zion National Park by bicycle, or kayaking the South Island of New Zealand. These trips are not for you if the idea of being outside constantly, among the elements, pushing your physical boundaries is less than appealing. They also focus far less on museums, history, and classic tourist attractions, so if this is important to you, we’d suggest looking into other tour companies where this is more prominent in the itinerary. If you love the outdoors and being active when you travel, REI is the perfect tour operator for you. They specialize in active adventure travel, as evidenced by their outfitters, so if you love shopping at REI for all your outdoor needs you’re sure to enjoy touring with them. Frequently Asked Questions 1. Do I need to be an REI member to go on their trips? No, however if you are a member, you can receive substantial discounts! 2. Is airfare included? No, only ground transportation during the trip is covered by the trip price. You are responsible for purchasing your airfare to and from the trip start and end locations. 3. Does REI Adventures provide travel insurance? Travel insurance is required when traveling with REI. Due to the potentially dangerous and risky nature of adventure travel, REI has a partnership with TripAssure, and recommend all travelers purchase the “Adventure Protection Plan” which you can do through REI. Should you choose to purchase independently, know that certain events that can arise from active travel may not be covered, so do so at your own risk. 4. How difficult are REI Adventures trips physically? This will vary by the trip, but in general it will be good to expect some parts of the trip to be physically challenging, relative to the trip classification. REI separates their trips into five main categories: 1. Relaxed: These trips are ideal for new adventurers with no background in active travel. They usually involve easy hikes - expect to walk no more than 3 miles a day, and to be active between 1-3 hours a day. Elevation changes are rare, so most hiking and walking is relatively flat. Great for families with young kids looking to enjoy being out in the fresh air! 2. Easy Active: Another good option for families or slightly older travelers looking to push their limits. These trips are active and exciting without being extreme. Expect to be active between 2-5 hours a day, hiking up to 6 miles; cycling between 10-30 miles. 3. Moderate: Here’s where it begins to get more challenging - though REI states that these trips are perfectly doable for novices to outdoor travel. Expect to be active between 4-6 hours most days, and covering distances of up to 10 miles for hiking; between 20-40 miles for cycling. 3a. Moderate plus: Moderate plus indicates that some experience in active outdoor travel would be beneficial. These trips are a combination of Moderate and Vigorous activities. 4. Vigorous: These trips are best suited to those travelers with a bit of active travel already under their belt, and basic outdoor travel skills are recommended. Or at least willing to undergo some training to be ready and able to keep up with the group. You’ll be active for between 5-8 hours a day, hiking 12 miles most days; cycling between 30-50 miles. 5. Strenuous: This designation is reserved for long distance trekking, dramatic changes in elevation, and it is required that travelers be fit and able bodied. A doctor’s note is required for you to be permitted on these tours. Expect consistently uneven terrain, and long days of activity - hiking 12 miles or more, or cycling 50 miles or more. Prepare to be active upwards of 10 hours a day.

We lived in the African bush for 10 days. Accommodations were wonderful - tents with nice furniture and attached bathrooms. Plenty of hot water! Food was delicious and quite sophisticated. But the best were the wildlife experiences led by an extremely knowledgeable and personable guide. All the staff were kind and professional.

Choosing a Safari Operator

Safari tours operators come in all shapes and sizes. Choosing the one that most closely matches what you’re looking to get from you safari is very important.

There are a large number of luxury safari operators - a throwback to early days of safari outings, which truth be told have some colonialism undertones. But today, much attention is paid to cultural activities, meeting local tribes and learning about their history - in addition of course to the starring wildlife.

Luxury or not, however, there’s no way to avoid the fact that safaris involve long game drives in somewhat bulky and bumpy 4WD jeeps, which can definitely become uncomfortable especially for older travelers. Make sure you are ready for the offroading!

The other style of safari is all the way on the other end of the spectrum - budget safaris and camping safaris. If you choose a budget safari operator, prepare for a more rustic experience. Not all budget safaris involve camping, however you won’t be staying in a luxury lodge either.
