What travelers are saying

"My husband and I recently booked a holiday via Planet Rail and what a good call that turned out to be. We gave Guy and the team little time to arrange the holiday as it was a fairly last minute decision by us to travel. Planet Rail found the right balance between being very helpful and friendly but also remaining professional. The customer service offered is personal and you definitely feel that it’s important to Planet Rail that they get your holiday right - and for us they most certainly did. Our holiday exceeded our expectations, and I don’t mind admitting that I am not always easy to please. The travel arrangements went without a hitch; the hotels we stayed in were spot on. Locations - breathtakingly beautiful - attention to detail was second to none. It can sometimes be unwise to recommend something as one persons delight is another’s displeasure - but in this instance I fail to see how anyone would not be impressed by the service offered by Planet Rail - I would book with them again in a heartbeat."

What travelers are saying

"Our family of four, including two adult children, took the Bicycling: Day Trips to Paradise in Canada. This trip is entirely outsourced to the owners of the inn, there are no Road Scholar employees involved in the trip. Two of us have taken bicycle trips all over the world and the bicycling component of this trip was disorganized, haphazard and almost unsafe. We all filled out forms giving details regarding our bicycle fitting months before the trip. On the first day, the leader Stephen, went around the room and asked the same questions and said everyone would get fitted in the morning before we began the first ride. The morning brought a rack of bikes, all different types in various levels of readiness. There were road bikes, hybrid bikes, mountain bikes and e-bikes. The rides were all on paved surfaces and the mountain bikes were heavy and the additional suspension added weight. The bike I received had rust on the chain and rear sprocket. When I asked about it, was told they were waiting for another van to show up with tools and equipment. Once it arrived, they gave me the lubricant to spray on the rust. My wife’s bike would not shift into the high gear on the front sprocket. Instead of adjusting the derailleur, they suggested spraying it with lubricant. Our one son is over six feet and needed a larger frame bike, even though he detailed it in the bike form months ago, there was no bike to fit him. One of the guides, then went home and brought a larger bike that was a full suspension mountain bike for him. The bike was very heavy, hard to control on the road and he felt unsafe. After two days, one of the guides convinced Stephen that they could adjust a hybrid bike to fit him. Clearly there was no work done to prepare the bikes for the trip. Many of the bikes needed adjusting and all needed lubricant to function easily. For every day, there was a tray of snacks placed out for us to take along the ride. None of the bikes had any baskets or attached bags, so if you didn’t bring a small day pack, there was no way to carry the snacks. For lunch on the rides, they brought exactly one sandwich for each rider. Since most of us get hungry while doing a day of exercise, it would have been helpful to have a few extras. On one day, they ran out of sandwiches and one of the leaders that were riding with us did not get lunch. Do NOT take this trip if you are expecting it to be a bicycling trip. We have used VBT and Discovery Bicycle Tours many times over the past 25 years and they are excellent bike tour companies. Lastly, after sharing these details with Road Scholar after the trip, their response was weak at best. After doing the full reviews and having to call them, their response was to give us $200 credit after spending $8000 on this trip. Not only was that insulting, they assumed that I would take another trip with their organization."

What travelers are saying

"We booked a National Geographic expedition Holland and Belgium by River. The promotional literature promised a 14-day deposit refund window. The “invoice” was marked “non-refundable” deposit. We completed the National Geographic Traveler Information. About 8 days later we received the “Travel Agreement” to be signed. We both approved and signed the National Geographic documents. A Cruise Line Travel agreement was enclosed but had no signature line. This document contained language which was unacceptable. We submitted the signed NatGeo documents. The following day we canceled the trip due to the unacceptable Cruise Line language. Cancellation was made 12 days after booking and no deposit was returned. We were told on the phone that the refund deadline was triggered by the 14 day window OR signatures on the Travel Agreement which ever came first. This was NEW information. To date, we have received NO refund of our $1000. We cancelled our trip within the advertised 14 day window."

What travelers are saying

"My trip was the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta, Oct 2023. The balloon fiesta was fabulous. Mike the driver was awesome. Our tour manager Jolie started out great, however, as the days passed she encourage travelers to go off on their own which changed the touring times for everyone else. The last day was a disaster, one lady was left behind because Jolie didn't do a head count. More stops were added so other people could leave the tour and go places on their own. Twice in the afternoon Jolie lost track of how many people were on the bus, she told customers to look around and report if someone was missing. She laughed on the bus intercom about how she didn't know how many people should be on the bus. A Mayflower rep stated that she was a favorite manager so nothing would be done. Most of these tours are attended by seniors, we need responsable employees to keep track of who is on the bus and who is not. She encouraged travelers to leave the tour and lost the ability to keep track of customers. Reckless..."

What travelers are saying

"This trip is unbelievably fantastic. Two of the best rides of my life, were on this tour. The guides were very good and this was just the start, when we met them, at the hotel in Cortina. Cortina was the site of the 1956 Olympics, and is a small pretty village. Nothing was open the two nights we were there, so probably bad timing. Hotel was a typical ski village hotel, good Italian/German food, and very comfortable. Second day of biking was up an old railroad spur that is now a ski trail about 15-20 K up to a mountain pass called Cimabanche Pass, which is beautiful. We rode up in a snow storm, then rain, then finally clear skies. This was the number two best ride of my life. Starting out from the hotel in Cortina, up the old spur, through single track bike trails, past babbling brooks, up to this fabulous mountain pass. This is now where the fun starts. Mostly downhill on paved roads very little traffic, at good speeds, through the most spectacular valleys you would ever see on a bike ride. Breathtaking. It had to end back at the hotel for a big dinner. The best ride of my life was the last biking day out of Merano. We were bused up 1500 K, about 85-90 miles to Lake Resia, high up in the Dolomites, then rode around the lake, down, back to Merano. High mountain peaks, many valleys, small towns, many grape growing farms, scenery, the best, and cool brisk weather. This was truly a great bike tour, one I will never forget. The trip is rated easy, but maybe easy/moderate is closer. The Hotel in Merano is excellent, middle of old town, modern, has a thermal bath, rooms were very good. The town of Merano is a must see if in the area, small, beneath the high mountains of the Dolomites, good restaurants, lots of tourists."

It seems Micol knew many of the staff of the venues we visited, including the pasta making class we attended. Scandinavia Tour Selection Trips

  • The Scandinavian countries are not only amazing for sightseeing and attractions, but the economy here is one of the most developed in the world making this place a top tourist destination. Stride wants to ensure that you are well prepared for your journey through the nordic region.
  • When picturing Scandinavia your mind may take you to a winter wonderland teaming with reindeer and snow capped hills, but Sweden, Finland, and Norway are known for have stunning beaches where you'll want to pack a swimsuit and sunscreen.
  • Weather here can change suddenly from cool to warm to rainy and humid so be sure to pack light summer clothes, sweaters, and active wear for hikes.  Don’t forget an umbrella!
  • In certain parts of scandinavia during summertime you will be able to witness the phenomena of a sunrise and sunset all at once known as the midnight sun. This makes for amazing pictures, but the sun will never set above the arctic circle and so night as you may know with a pitch black sky will not take place. If you're a light sleeper and need full darkness to snooze, you may want to pack a sleep mask to get full rest.
  • ATMs can be found anywhere and credit/debit cards are accepted for any transaction. You may want to check with your home bank to see how much each withdrawal will cost. Foreign currencies are easily exchanged, with rates usually slightly better at exchange offices rather than banks.
  • You will find some interesting foods amongst these countries. Norway is known for their frozen pizza while Sweden is known for their Swedish meatballs (a fan favorite if you've ever shopped at IKEA and the largest one is found here). The smoked puffin and pickled ram's testicles in Iceland may be off putting to some so the local farmers market is always a great alternative for fresh food and can save you money.
  • Public transportation in Iceland is limited so you will need a rental car with 4WD if you plan to venture out in winter. Sweden on the other hand has excellent transportation and is very easy to get around.
  • In order to ensure your phone is powered to take incredible pictures, make sure to pack  a European outlet converter.

Additional details

Weather in Scandinavia

Summer is the peak tourist season in Scandinavia. In July, a popular month for tourism, the average daily temperatures range from 55 F to 72 F in Sweden, Norway, and Denmark.

Whereas winters can drop to a low 20 degrees when days are short and many sights and activities are on a limited schedule. Unless you're a hibernating polar bear, looking to hit the slopes, or have a hankering to see the winter sports plan accordingly if booking during this time.

Seeing the Northern Lights in Scandinavia

If you wish to see the Northern Lights in Scandinavia the best months to go would be between mid-October and March and the best times to see it would be from 11pm to 2am. The further south in Scandinavia you go, the less likely you will get to see it, because there is more light in the months before and after winter. The northern half of Norway and Sweden, and all of Iceland, are recognized as being the best places to view this phenomenon.

Top Cities in Scandinavia

Cities here are very unique. Stockholm, or as locals call it “beauty on water”, is known for its viking history, unique art, and beautiful scenery. You can take a bike tour around the city, sail the archipelago, and even take a moose and wildlife safari to see the surrounding wildlife Stockholm has to offer.

Copenhagen, a great place to visit all year round starting as a winter wonderland then melting away, transforming into a summer dream. Explore the city like a local on a bike where bikes outnumber cars 3:1.

Oslo is known for its lush greenery and museums.  It is one of Europe’s most happening music scenes with more concerts than any other Scandinavian city.

If you have an obsession for Santa Claus, then Rovaniemi is a city you must visit. It is known as the official home town of Santa Claus. It’s also a great place to witness the Northern Lights. In this winter wonderland you can visit Santa Claus Village, take a sleigh ride to the Northern Lights, and even go on a reindeer safari.

What are the countries in Scandinavia?

Countries include Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden. Iceland is not technically part of Scandinavia, but it is often included when people talk about the region due to its historical, cultural and linguistic ties to the countries.

If English is your first language then you are in luck! Scandinavian languages consist of Danish, Swedish, and Norwegian, but they begin to study English in school at a young age and most speak it very well.
