- Because of the varied terrain, there can be dramatic shifts in the weather along the route, so take layers of clothing that will provide comfort during extreme temperature changes.
- Pack any medicines you take in their original containers, and keep them in your carry-on luggage because they may be hard or impossible to replace.
- Bring a generous supply of your favorite snacks, which may be difficult to find along the way.
- Some areas of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, through which a section of the Silk Road passes, are situated at altitudes over 10,000 feet; check with your doctor if you’re prone to altitude sickness.
- Occasional windstorms kick up desert dust that can clog the nose and throat and sting the eyes, so bring a kerchief and perhaps nose and eye drops for relief.
