It was a great trip, full of learning and discovery moments. We sheared a sheep, learned the basics and tried to master the skills of Irish soccer and hurling. We enjoyed the friendly nature of the Irish people where ever we went. The hotels were very good and centrally located so everything was within walking distance. There is so much to like and nothing to dislike about this adventure we highly recommend it

The scenery was breathtaking and the hikes were refreshing. This trip goes to many small towns off the beaten track which most tourists do not get a chance to see. Food and hotels good also. I would not have come in the summer though as it was hot...perhaps September though.

A superb attention to detail made the trip

If my wife Fyllis and I learned anything during our Grand Circle Cruise Line voyage on the Danube River, it’s that great things can come in (relatively) small packages. That’s the conclusion we reached after our 14-day trip which took in four European capital cities, smaller but no less inviting towns and tiny villages that make up in charm what they lack in size.
We were awed by the magnificence of Prague, Vienna, Budapest and Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia. We marveled at their architectural treasures, enjoyed their variety of world-class museums, took advantage of their delightful outdoor cafes and were intrigued by their fascinating histories.
We had similar reactions to much smaller enclaves with their narrow, winding cobblestone streets, mishmash of building styles which evolved over centuries and shops selling edibles and merchandise unique to the local culture.
Along with these and numerous other highlights, the ship itself which carried us along the fabled Danube River immediately became one of the highlights of our trip. The M/S River Aria is one of Grand Circle’s six custom-built river ships that combine a number of features offered by much larger ocean-going vessels with the intimacy of a passenger capacity, on the Aria, of 162.
Onboard amenities include a library, whirlpool, sauna, bar and lounge, and souvenir shop. In keeping with the “customer first” policy of Grand Circle, and its sister land tour company Overseas Adventure Travel, the staterooms are very well planned and surprisingly (to us) efficient, The drawers and storage space provided plenty of room for our clothes and other belongings, each stateroom has individual heating and AC controls, and choices on the color TV include CNN and ship-front views from a bow camera.
Another passenger-friendly feature is nightly “port talks” describing the next day’s adventures along with historic, sightseeing and other information about where they were to take place. In fact, few opportunities are lost to share interesting, and helpful, tidbits.
When we were relaxing on the open-air Sun Deck, watching the magnificent scenery pass by, a voice over the loudspeaker named and described the picturesque villages, identified the wine grapes growing in terraced vineyards, and offered mini-history lessons about the occasional castle and abbey that we spotted perched on a hillside.
The Grand Circle/OAT philosophy of “Learning and discovery” came to the fore in other ways as well. Among presentations on both the ship and land were a discussion of cultures and customs in four Eastern European countries, a description of the education system in Slovakia by a teacher from there, and an examination of the present-day refugee situation in the countries we visited.
In keeping with the L&D approach to almost everything, even mealtimes and shopping opportunities aboard the River Aria offered more than just good tastes and attractive trinkets.
A mouth-watering choice of mealtime menu items was augmented by an even more extensive selection of buffet alternatives. They usually included popular specialties of whichever country or region the ship was passing, or at which it was docked. One day passengers were handed hazelnut cream wafers, a Viennese specialty. On another, we were given apricots from Krems, a town in an area of Austria famous for growing that fruit.
Another touch was the display of souvenirs, handicrafts and other items that was laid out when the ship was docked and offered for sale. They also were representative of the country which lay at the other end of the gangplank.
This was but one of numerous examples of attention to detail, some based on feedback from previous Grand Circle Cruise Line passengers, that made the trip memorable for Fyllis and me. And which underscores reasons why we, as well as many of our fellow passengers on the cruise, have traveled with Grand Circle and OAT time after time.
