Loved this trip. Camping in very nice places - usually had hot water and nice showers. Great itinerary - LOVED Namibia and the variety of the tour from the desert to the delta to the parks.

Thailand Cambodia Trip. Nov 2017. For my 60th birthday I decided I wanted to take my family of 6 to Thailand and Cambodia. After my initial conversation with the Intrepid office, they pulled together a perfect 24 day custom itinerary for us. My Intrepid coordinator really listened. We set up a incredibly diverse trip, ranging from ocean front resorts to a primitive hillside village trek. From the minute we landed in Bangkok, to the day we flew home, all transfers went off with out a hitch. What really made our trip memorable was our local guides. Every single one of them were warm, professional, humorous but most importantly, had a deep knowledge of the geography, the plant life, dining, the history and government. We felt by the end of the trip, these guides had become a part of our family. The entire trip was amazing and we will definitely use Intrepid for our next adventure travel. Thanks so much.

My Perillo trip to Greece: Athens is a maze riddled with ancient ruins and beautiful sites. The food was terrible at every place our tour group had chosen for us. We were not able to choose what we wanted to eat other than a choice of fish or meat. One would think that without a doubt at least the calamari would be excellent but every place that was chosen for us the food was either improperly cooked or rotten. My experience in Athens was horrible: there was not one person or vendor we encountered who did not try and deceive or take advantage of us in some manner. Our tour guide did nothing but make excuses for all of the mistakes and screw ups rather than try and correct them.
Then it was off to Mykonos. An extremely beautiful island. The restaurants chosen for us were terrible and once again our tour guide did nothing to try and resolve any dissatisfaction anyone in our group had no matter how slight. Our accommodations were horrible, and once again our tour guide did nothing but make excuses stating that it was the end of season. We were promised a full breakfast buffet daily, however the eggs were not only fertilized and red they were nearly raw. What was supposed to be bacon was nearly raw, the coffee was instant, I could rant about more but, the overall attitude of our tour guide as well as the staff was an "I don't care attitude". This is not only my opinion but the opinion of most everyone who was on the tour. Did I mention I had food poisoning twice while there?
Next and currently I am in Santorini. The views and islands are spectacular. However, I did not get to experience our boat tour today because I was in Bed all day with a severe fever which has finally broken. However, the bed bugs got the best of me and my legs and and arms look like I have some type of disease.
Perillo did not take into consideration anyone who may of had any type of physical handicap or illness. We were forced to carry our own luggage on and off each boat trip to each island. This may not sound so terrible but this entire vacation has been nothing but extremely stressful and unsatisfactory.
Mostly I blame our tour guide. She took no interest in making accommodations for any of us. And most importantly did nothing to ensure or safety in any manner.
My trip to Italy via Perillo was the best experience I had ever had and our tour guide was the best one could ask for. Raphael set a standard so high that I guess no one else is able to meet.

Took a Perillo Tour to Hawaii in September 2015. It was awesome. Everything was taken care of and if there was any kind of problem, it was taken care of immediately! Our tour guide, Paul, was fun and very good. The people on the tour were fantastic and it really did feel like vacationing with family. One of these days, Perillo is on my list for my Italy tour.

Have you ever wanted to go to the most beautiful, interesting country in the world? If you've been to Italy, you've been there. If you haven't, you don't know what you are missing. My first trip to Italy was in 2005 with Perillo Tours. I fell in love; with the country, with the history, with the art, with the beauty and with the tour company. Since that first trip, I've returned eight more times. Each one with Perillo. I wouldn't do it any other way. Perillo knows how to do it right. You can leave all your worries with Perillo and enjoy your time in the most beautiful country. I've been asked many times. No, I don't work for Perillo. But I'm absolutely sold on the service they provide. From the folks you work with in New Jersey to the tour bus in Italy. It's all first class. So, do yourself a favor, book a tour. I promise there is nothing like it. And I'm always thrilled to share my experiences with anyone, should you want additional information regarding money, art, food, shopping (my favorite) or anything else. Just let me know and we can schedule some time to talk. Ciao!!

What Makes Intrepid Travel Stand Out?

Above all else, Intrepid strives to get its travelers off the beaten path and under the surface of the local culture. To accomplish this, group sizes average just 10 travelers each, with a maximum of 16 on most trips. This allows for more use of local transportation and lodging, along with fostering cultural immersion.

Intrepid also employs local English-speaking leaders who act more as a resource for local exploration than do typical ‘guides,’ shepherding groups from one place to another.

Who Will Enjoy Traveling With Intrepid Travel?

Intrepid is one of the early pioneers of the “adventure”-style guided trip. Despite its informal beginnings and emphasis on younger, highly adventurous travelers, Intrepid has expanded to a global company with a broad range of trips to fit all ages.

Intrepid divides its small-group trips into three separate styles of travel, all priced accordingly. “Basix,” for budget travelers, keep inclusions to a minimum and offer plenty of free time, “Original” journeys which offer more included activities and more hotels, while “Comfort” trips offer the highest level of included activities and standards of accommodation, as well as roomier vehicles.

The kind of traveler who gravitates to Intrepid Travel is one who has a real sense of adventure - whether this means hard adventure, or simply going deeper off the beaten path. Interacting with locals is an important factor when you travel, as is gaining a unique cultural perspective. A sense of fun is also essential, whether it means going out at night with your tour mates or daring, ahem, encouraging each other to try strange new foods.

Monk mediating in Myanmar on tour with Intrepid Travel

Originally focused on small group adventure tours to Asia, Intrepid has expanded rapidly over the years, while maintaining its classic, adventurous, and immersive style. Today Intrepid Travel offers more than 1,000 different experiences in over 100 countries, on all seven continents. Regions with the most trips include Asia, South America, Africa, and Europe.

Intrepid Travel Style

Intrepid enjoys using local, unique forms of transportation. You might find yourself traveling by felucca in Egypt, on a camel in Morocco, or in a tuk-tuk on the best Thailand tour of your life. Accommodations, which could range from guesthouses to home stays, are also locally owned, allowing a more authentic taste of the region while contributing to the local economy.

There are a few broad travel styles to choose from when deciding on an Intrepid tour:

1. Basix - Budget travelers who don’t mind, and in fact prefer, simple accommodations - camping and homestays with basic amenities, and crave a lot of free time for exploring independently will love these tours. Public transportation is used exclusively so pack light! These trips often attract a younger crowd who love the idea of throwing a backpack on, keep plenty of room for the unexpected in their schedule, and allocate their travel funds towards spontaneous bus tickets and street food instead of museum tours and 5 star restaurants.

2. Original - These trips take the backpacker spirit of local immersion, incorporating all the benefits that come with going with a planned itinerary. This style is called “Original” because it’s the type of travel that put Intrepid on the map...pun intended. Accommodations are still simple and budget minded - often homestays are used to give you a true sense of place, personality, and culture. Mostly public transportation is used.

3. Comfort - Intrepid is known for the active adventure style of travel and these trips keep that mentality, with a few more creature comforts thrown into the mix. You can expect higher end, more discerning, accommodations that include a wider variety of included amenities, transportation is mostly private, though you can still expect to use some public transport, as is the Intrepid way. More meals are included in the trip price, and more group activities - which means a bit less free time to explore on your own.

Why Choose a Tour With Intrepid Travel?

Sample of many spices in Middle Eastern market

Intrepid is a good choice if you don’t mind foregoing some creature comforts for a truly authentic, local experience. If you enjoy meeting locals when traveling, sampling new and exciting foods, and traveling in mixed-aged groups of 10-16 people, Intrepid could be a good fit for you.

It’s important to note, sometimes “ample free time” can be a blessing and a curse. It sounds great on paper, but if you’re looking to maximize your dollar and your vacation time, be sure you understand the implications of having a lot of free time during your itinerary.

For some travelers this is an absolute requirement, but for others it can be tough to branch off and explore independently - you also need to make sure you allocate enough travel money for independent meals. The tour leaders are great resources of information for how to spend your free time, but if you like having a full day scheduled from breakfast to dinner, Intrepid may not be the best company for you.

Lastly, if sustainable and responsible travel is important to you, Intrepid has poured millions of dollars into local economies, and has a very strong emphasis on responsible travel. So you can feel good knowing that your money helps support some of the innkeepers, vendors, and communities that you’ll meet along the way.

About Perillo Tours

Founded in 1945, and headquartered in New Jersey, Perillo was a pioneering company in the guided travel industry.

What Makes Perillo Stand Out?

Perillo has been a name in the tourism industry since the 1940s, known for operating tours in Italy. Today Italy is still their main focus, though they have expanded to offer limited departures in Hawaii, Greece, and Costa Rica.

They provide well thought out and classic itineraries, showcasing the traditional sights, nicely augmented with local insider knowledge. Perillo is a classic tour company, offering several trip options including custom tours, destination weddings, and traditional escorted group trips. On the trip, you’ll benefit from their extensive experience and destination knowledge.

They have a dedicated Italy brand, “Perillo Italy Tours”, which expands on their long legacy providing Italy guided experiences, as well as a “Learning Journeys” brand. Their learning journeys travel to many more destinations, and cover a very wide range of interests, including certification classes for certain skills.

Who Will Enjoy Traveling With Perillo?

All ages are welcome on Perillo tours, however their type of travel may be more enjoyed by older travelers looking for a calm, fully managed tour. Perillo is a bit old fashioned. They do one thing and do it well, and haven’t changed much in the 60 years that they’ve been around. So if you’re looking for a traditional guided tour, busy but not with too many bells and whistles, Perillo is a great choice.

One unique offering through Perillo is their faith-based journeys. This was one of the first types of tours designed by Perillo. You can visit Greece and the Holy Land, as well as several important religious destinations in Italy. For travelers seeking an authentic religious-themed travel experience Perillo’s extensive experience leading and planning these kinds of tours is nearly unmatched.

Custom trip options are also available through Perillo. These custom group experiences cover a wide range of interests including yoga / health and wellness retreats, festivals, and learning tours geared toward universities. If you’re planning a destination wedding or honeymoon they have services dedicated to this as well.

Their Learning Journeys are perfect for solo female travelers and enthusiastic life learnings passionate about learning new skills, languages, or diving deeper into the history of a certain destination and culture.

Venice Italy with Perillo tours

Perillo is known for, and primarily focuses on, Italy. Here their breadth of knowledge is impressive as they began operating packages in 1945. Perillo Italy tours cover the whole country, including Sicily, with special emphasis on classic sights and local eats.

Perillo also offers escorted tours in Hawaii, Greece, and Costa Rica.

Their “Learning Tours,” focus on niche educational travel and classes around the world, including Africa & the Middle East, Asia, and Australia.

Perillo Travel Style

Tried and true is Perillo’s style. They may have the most flashiest or easily navigable website out there, or the most unique itineraries, but they know guided tours, they know Italy, and they stick with the classics. Hotels, meals, and activities have been personally vetted and experienced by the founder, and they have everything down to a science.

Local village in Italy

Itineraries are between 9-10 days on average, often focusing on cuisine and historical sights. Groups tend to be between 20 and 40 people, and they often arrange private departures for large groups such as families or wedding parties.

Special interest tours are another popular kind of itinerary offered through Perillo. In Italy, they offer a number of golf tours, faith-based tours, and culinary tours. Learning tours often focus on cooking, as well as art and history, science, and wildlife.

Why Choose a Tour With Perillo?

Colosseum in Rome Italy lit up at night

For an experience in Italy like no other, Perillo operates tours from the major cities to the charming hill towns off the beaten path. Their itineraries are carefully crafted for a thoughtful balance of sightseeing, free time, optional activities, and relaxation.

They are not the flashiest of tour companys, and their website is somewhat difficult to navigate to find all the options available - of which there are a good number. But they certainly have laurels to rest on given their extensive background and long historic legacy in guided tourism.
